Escape the ordinary

It’s a miracle when you think about it: Two people going about their lives as we do, making decisions that lead them here or there, the timing of a move, a meeting, a job, then BANG, right place, right time, and the two that were destined to meet finally catch each other’s eyes, strike up a conversation, and you and me becomes “us.” The odds aren’t on our side, but look how often we manage to magically find each other. And love begets love, we grow our families (or adopt a dog together for practice), and we eventually discover that love is what makes life worth living. Even when unrequited, even when bittersweet, even when it shatters our hearts into a million pieces, the act of loving is an act of courage. We make ourselves vulnerable, choose to let someone else into our lives, but even when it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t negate the fact that we are capable of love. And that love is also what heals us.We take the risks, we wear our hearts on our sleeves, we accept the blind date, we check for a ring on his finger, we fall hard. There’s a reason they call it falling in love. Close your eyes, open your heart, and fall backwards into adventures of the heart. And never forget the miracle that led you to your Big Love. IS

AND A WINNING SMILE

“SMILE— SUNSHINE IS GOOD FOR YOUR TEETH.

Coco Chanel

What you gain when you grin Every time you frown, you’re using 43 facial muscles, while smiling only uses 17 muscles. Smile lines are more attractive than frown lines, no? Studies also show that smiling can lower blood pressure, release endorphins (whether genuine or not), and give your immune system a boost. Upgrade to a laugh and you’ll also slim your middle—the movement exercises your abs, diaphragm, shoulders and heart. Scientists at Vanderbilt University found that laughing can increase your calorie burn by up to 20 percent. Bonus: It’s contagious. Participants in a Swedish study reported that they found it very difficult to frown when they saw other participants who were smiling. Many began to turn their mouths up without even realizing it. Start smiling and the whole world will smile with you.

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud. Coco Chanel

Speak Up! In her book, Speaking as a Leader, communication expert Judith Humphrey offers advice and strategies for women who want to be heard. Who doesn’t? Some quick tips from Humphrey: 1. Stop apologizing. It undermines your authority as soon as you open your mouth. Adopt a “no disclaimer” rule and you might be surprised at the reactions you get. 2. Don’t soften your voice. You don’t have to bray like a donkey to be heard, but when you speak, let your voice be strong, clear, and full of conviction. Focus on speaking from your diaphragm, using those muscles to project your voice. Each time you speak up, your voice will get stronger. 3. Believe in what you’re saying. First, understand your fear for what it is: a product of socialization and not a personal failing. Next, fight it. When the voice in your head says, “You’re not knowledgeable enough, prepared enough, or powerful enough to express your views,” argue back: “Who says? I have great ideas, and I deserve to share them.”

Perhaps the secret of living well is not in having all the answers but in pursuing unanswerable questions in good company.

Rachel Naomi Remen

Repurposing Roses 2-3 liters of rose petals A large pot with lid 2 small heat-resistant glass bowls Water Ice cubes Place one bowl face-down in the center of the pot. Place the second bowl face-up on top of the first bowl. Add the rose petals to the pot, but not inside the bowl. Pour just enough water to cover the petals. The water level should be lower than the bowl height. Cover the pot with the lid inverted. Bring the rose petals to a boil. Once the water is boiling, fill the top of the lid (still flipped) with ice cubes. Reduce the heat to barely a simmer for 2 hours. Add ice as needed, checking occasionally to make sure there is still enough water over the petals. If you need to add more, be sure not to get any water in the center bowl. The condensation from the heat/ice will drip into the bowl, leaving a pure rose water. This recipe will yield roughly 1 quart of rose water. Pour into a glass spray bottle and keep in the fridge to use as facial tonic or room spray.

Shopping For My Perfect Mattress Temma Ehrenfeld

I couldn’t. And I’d run out of mattresses at Sleepy’s that I could afford. Since my troubles had begun with a breakup, the best person to appeal to for solace and practical assistance must be another ex. One of mine had been making do with an old mattress and needed a push to move on. So, together we went to Sleepy’s. My companion walked straight to the most beautiful mattress, the elite of the luxury line, lay down and didn’t want to get up. The store agreed to let me exchange my mattress for the pricier one, and deliver it, not to me, but to him. I was now free. And my friend was in love. In a mattress-less time during which I slept on a sofa, I discovered a shameful lack of science considering the population that suffers from sleep issues and body pains. Val and Jyotika Fernandes are a dream team at MUSC. The couple met in India when they were both in medical school and posted to several rotations together. Friends for over a year before they began dating, they decided to marry and move to the U.S. to complete their medical training. They looked for a place that had residencies and faculty positions in their respective fields—Val is an Interventional Cardiologist and Jyotika is an Endocrinologist—fell in love with Charleston and settled on MUSC, where they have both worked for 12 years now. After 22 years of marriage and two daughters (ages 15 and 12), the couple is just as much in love as they were when they were medical residents. Val: “I realized I was attracted to Jyotika when we were on a medical rotation together and she took a two-week leave. That’s when I noticed I missed her company. She is my best friend and I am reconciled to the fact that (though I am right) I can settle for being wrong just to keep the peace. ” Jyotika: “I’m probably the extrovert in our relationship.Val is quiet and steady. I was attracted to his calm demeanor. Getting to know each other as coworkers and friends first—you get to know your fellow residents pretty well when working under stress!”

Annie Uthe leaves the light on for Luke Cunningham. They met in 2008, shortly after Luke moved back to Charleston from Los Angeles and they were working for the same publishing company. They didn’t begin dating “officially” until 2010, after they both left the company; Annie went to work as creative manager for Escapada Living and Luke took on music full time. Preparing to release his second album, Luke asked Annie to accompany him to the photo shoot for the album cover on the beach at Sullivan’s Island in December, but instead of hanging out with the band, Luke sang a song he wrote for Annie called “In Another Life,” got down on one knee, and proposed just as family and friends came over the dunes to join the surprise engagement party. Annie: “Luke always makes me laugh. He brings out the best in me. Our life together is ‘ours’... it’s a shared adventure that I’ve never experienced before.” Luke: “After spending a month in LA, I came home long enough to pack my bags and go back on the road. The porch light was on because Annie always leaves it on for me. I remember thinking, I can’t imagine doing what I do without this person in my life.”

They’re So Original | Ronnie Trotter and Justin Truman are partners in business and in life. The dynamic duo met at a thrift store seven years ago and hit it off. “I thought he was following me,” says Justin. Ronnie had a small salon at the time and invited Justin to come by and get his hair cut. “He said I could be his boyfriend OR his client. I picked boyfriend, obviously,” he adds. Ronnie and Justin now co-own a new salon that opened in September of last year called SWISH on Pitt Street in the Old Village, Mount Pleasant. “I’ve been cutting hair since I was 19,” says Ronnie. “This is the amazing salon I’ve always dreamed of owning.” In his spare time, Ronnie rides dressage (he has always loved horses) and the pair manages to take five or six spinning classes every week—on top of running a busy salon. Ronnie: “Justin is one of the most generous people I’ve ever met. He would do anything for anyone and he’s very outgoing. I’m a little more reserved.” Justin: “I love how positive Ronnie is and that people light up when he comes into the room. Having his attention is like having a spotlight shine on you. He makes people feel really special.”

“I mourned it. All of it.” The roads are wet. These are his wrappings now. Instead of love songs and pink satin bows, his love is delivered in something akin to newspaper. Practical, recycled, useful. I continued, asking him: Don’t you miss it? The romance woven throughout our lives when we were kids? He shook his head incredulously. I might as well have asked him if he misses the days we did not have enough money for a house downpayment, so misplaced does my nostalgia seem to him. or him, romance is like the waves you wade through on your way to the still part of the ocean. They tire you out. They ruin your ability to appreciate the tranquil sea. He has plowed through the waves long enough. I carefully re-folded the torn and yellowed notes and as I did, I considered that if I had met him after the plane crash, I might never have seen him wade through the waves at all. I close my box and store it in the back of my closet to pull out some other day. What a good gift. What a really good gift.

Freelance photographer extraordinaire! Her favorite tool is a Canon, her dream vacation would be to use it on the beaches of Bali, and she moved to Charleston for the same reason a lot of us do: It’s beautiful. She likes her whiskey neat, long walks with her dog Dixie, and once lived next door to Heath Ledger while he was filming “The Patriot.” Spotted on any given Friday night at Xiao Bao Biscuit with her sweetheart. BBQ fanatic, drools over photos in Bon Appetit and National Geographic, refuses to choose just one favorite color, and if she had to pick a bumper sticker motto, it would be “life is a journey, not a destination.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
