Have a February love-in. Buy an expensively fragile red lace bra. Wear it under a dress the color of Chinese New Year money envelopes, dyed red with

Happiness and Luck.

Practice your pout. Paint it the crimson of the cherry on top. Be sultry over a salty margarita, and leave a lovingly large tip. Make eye contact with men, women, children and dogs, and they’ll follow you anywhere. Stop trying to straighten your curves…designate them a scenic highway instead. Your skin is your body’s largest organ…make sure it’s

Playing A Love Song. Let someone brush your hair until you fall asleep. Hold hands whenever you can wherever you are. Be the icing on the cake, the flame for the moth, the flower for the bee, the beat of someone’s heart. Take a love bite out of the world. Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Gayle Kabaker

When it comes to your mortgage,

TrustUs.

Katie and Jason do.

While Katie and Jason were initially skeptical of finding a budget-friendly dream home, they kept in mind a tip from their professions as a personal trainer and a physical therapist: flexibility. They prepared Katie St. Clair, CPT, CSCS Total Approach Training totalapproach.net Jason St. Clair, PT, DPT Joints in Motion Physical Therapy and Wellness 843.793.4466

for battle when they stumbled upon a house with good bones that needed some rehab. “We spotted a foreclosure in the Old Village and Lorcan Lucey helped us realize that a fixer-upper was the perfect way for us to have an affordable home in our dream location. We went into a bidding war, but we would not have gotten the home without the help of our agent, Sarah Vineyard.” Add in a bit of oversight from Bennett Hofford Construction and a hefty dose of elbow grease and they were well on their way. “We did as much as we could ourselves: painting, tiling, working day and night in order to cut costs. We were just so grateful to finally have a home and really wanted it to be special. But if it had not been for Lorcan’s initial financial counseling and finding us a mortgage that fit our lives, we would not have our home. We are so thankful, and we love it more every day.”

Single in Charleston?

Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hays of selectivewomen.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect and form REAL relationships.

That’s why so many singles contact selectivewomen.com. Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one of the area’s oldest and largest introduction services, from Savannah and Hilton Head to Charleston, Jacksonville and beyond.

From the Editor On a recent weekend, four friends flew in late one Friday to christen a weekend of bloody mary mornings and old-story evenings. It dawned on me Sunday that the group has a decade of friendships and romances pulled from across the nation—high school BFFs, a pair of sorority sisters, former workmates and high school sweethearts—and that somehow we still all fit together. Though everyone’s partnered off, the dynamic of the six isn’t limited to couplings, but based on friendships. And just as much as an XO before bed, everyone deserves an XO email on their lunch break from a forever friend. So this month we found four couples in Charleston who have worked toward many things together over their years—empowering local youth, ensuring gay rights, re-committing their relationship, and helping others commit to theirs: Sam and Lynnie, Sue and Jen,Tommye and Jimmy, and Valerie and David. Among each couple is certainly a gaggle of friends in the backdrop, a larger family to complement each pairing and hand out an XO when needed. This issue is dedicated to all the XOs in your life—romantic, platonic, sincere and saucy.

LOVE’S UNFOLDING

I have a love/hate relationship with doing laundry— I love to hate it.

Stephanie Hunt

34  februaryw2013

charleston.skirt.com

Love’s Unfolding

Promiscuous socks go tumbling around, playing footsie, always exiting the dryer with a different partner than the one they went in with. Shirts turn inside out, just to spite me. Pajama bottoms and nightgowns cling and spark with a static electricity they rarely ignite in the bedroom. And the supposedly crisp, wrinkle-free button-downs we paid a premium for, expecting truth in “no-iron” advertising, emerge anything but crisp and wrinkle-free. I have a love/hate relationship with doing laundry—I love to hate it. Sorting, washing, drying, folding—it’s a big pile of drudgery, my least favorite chore. I’m not opposed to housework and cleaning in general. I actually get perverse satisfaction from wiping down kitchen counters. As pitiful as it sounds, I rather enjoy sweeping–the rhythmic motion, the mental, physical and existential exercise of whisking dirt up and away. It’s like forgiveness, only with a dust pan. But with five bodies at my house, four of them female bodies that happen to love clothes, endless mounds of laundry pile up. The piles pile up dirty, then they pile up clean—freshly clean and folded clothes waiting to be stuffed back in their drawers or crammed into closets until their next release into the wild, when they will then get down and dirty, again, and eventually find their way back to the laundry pile. And so it goes, another round in the wash cycle of life; I am Sisyphus with a high-efficiency front-loader. In the greater scheme of things, I realize my complaints are petty and absurd. I am not walking four miles in bad shoes to fetch dirty water from a creek in order to do the wash. I am not taking in others’ laundry in order to put food on the table. I am a spoiled-rotten American with too many clothes and a laundry room with a window and a washer and dryer operated by sophisticated electronics. But at 10:45 at night, when I’m beat and ready for bed and realize that if I don’t empty the dryer then I can’t reload it with the wet clothes languishing in the washer getting stinky and sour, then I’m not thinking about the poor souls fetching water from the creek. I’m thinking about how I resent the never shifting Tide, the cheerless Cheer, the marginal net Gain. I resent laundry’s relentless repetition; I resent that my husband (or children) rarely feel obligated to intervene when overflowing hampers start oozing out from the laundry room, clogging the hallway, creeping into the living room. DHEC officials in hazmat suits are on their way and no one but me notices. Mostly, though, I resent the fact that for some historical/cultural reason, laundry is regarded as women’s work, more so than other domestic duties. There is no word such as “sweeptress,” or “mopstress,” there is no gender specific noun for “dishwasher,” but the word laundress slips by without a red underlined spell-check alert. I am a liberated, empowered 21st-century feminist laundress. Seems the joke is on me that ERA laundry detergent is pronounced “era” rather than E.R.A. But then, in the weary quiet, late at night, in the midst of folding my husband’s still-warm-from-the-dryer Bessie Smith Jazz Strut t-shirt that he wears all the time, something other than the t-shirt gets turned inside out. I begin to see this chore anew. I begin to think of how many of his shirts and boxer shorts and Kmart khaki pants that he insists are just as good as Land’s End that I have washed and folded over 25 years of marriage, and I realize that this mundane act of caring for the clothes on his back is part of the fabric of our relationship. I don’t mean to glamorize the chore—I’d much rather be doing something else with my time—but when I pause a moment and smooth out the wrinkles from his favorite Sol Surfers t-shirt, or from my daughter’s soccer shorts, I realize this can be more than drudgery. It can become a labor of love. I can fold care into each crease, stretch sleeves with gratitude, give fleece PJs a good static-freeing shake, and shake out my petty grudges while I’m at it. One of the hardest things I did after my mother died was unload her dryer. The nightgown I’d given for her for Christmas was in there, as were her comfy sweat pants and the bibs this beautiful, fashionable woman had to wear because her disease had taken away her ability to swallow and so drool would get on her clothes. She loved her clothes and laundered them meticulously. She would no more leave them wallowing and wrinkling in the dryer than she would mix whites with colors. Doing her final load was a load I could hardly bear. She had put them in the washer, selected Normal Cycle, fully expecting she’d wear these things again. A quarter of a century of marriage requires a lot of detergent, and folding, and ironing out wrinkles, and overlooking stains that simply won’t come out. A relationship demands that we remember to check the lint filter, clear out the build up, take time occasionally to look for the match to those damn floozy socks. And to find what else might have gone missing, like the realization of how lucky I am to be folding the clothes of those I love, even if I don’t love the actual folding. Stephanie Hunt is a freelance writer based in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Her work is published in various regional and national publications, and her laundry is rarely sorted. stephaniehuntwrites.com

THE CHALLENGE

2.

To acknowledge all of the things in life that switch on that inner glow and light you up from within, and then to make sure each day is simply bursting with them!

Stay Cozy: This year, I vow to cozy up with Winter until the very last minute. As ready as I am for Springtime (and then, be still my heart: Summertime!)

New York-based Matt Pond PA comes to Charleston to play the Tin Roof on February 1st, in support of their new album The Lives Inside the Lines of Your Hands. If surprisingly fun, moody indie rock is your thing, make sure to check them out.

Maybe Today I Will

…get my Downward Dog on at Spring Street’s new Mission Yoga, and then follow it up with some house-made, cinnamon whiskey at The Royal American. (on the rocks, please. Namaste.). …try not to give my beau a heart attack as I linger ever so slightly in front of the window display of gorgeous wedding gowns at Modern Trousseau on King Street. …finally try the Chicken & Waffles at the Early Bird Diner in West Ashley. Word on the street is that they go down best with chocolate milk! Sounds…interesting? …set aside time to call and catch up with sweet friends, scattered across the country by life. …pick one of Charleston-based Lulie Wallace’s beautiful paintings to add to my birthday wish list. So what if my birthday’s still 4 months away? …take a late-night drive out to Sullivan’s Island. Moon roof open, hand out into the brisk night air, heart full.

Daniel Brinker brings men in skirts to the masses. The new owner of Dudley’s on Ann is no stranger to skirts. Every Thursday, his bar hosts cabaret shows with the intimate feel of living-room drag, reflecting Daniel’s dream to bring “bigger city ideas to a smaller bar.” He worked on the management and bartending sides of Dudley’s for three years before taking over to transform it from a gathering point for the gay community into a high-energy hub for an “awesome mix of people.” Customers can come in dressy or casual for shows and karaoke. “Anyone, gay or straight, whoever you are, can feel welcome.” The added energy has made Dudley’s “Charleston’s Everybody Bar” and home to memorials for deceased customers, fundraisers for Lowcountry AIDS Services, and donation drives for the homeless. “If you have a fear of gay bars, come check it out. See what your impression is.” The best thing about reading skirt? “The upcoming events page. It’s great seeing what’s going on in town for the month.” Best thing about wearing a skirt!? “Getting to pretend that I’m in Rocky Horror for a bit.”

Elizabeth Colbert-Busch | Congressional Candidate | Working Mama | Accomplished Exec Because she jumped in. Because she’s a fast learner and fearless leader. Because she’s got the sense of humor thing in spades. Let’s just get this out of the way: So yes, she’s got this certain younger brother. But Elizabeth Colbert-Busch also grew up with nine other smart, funny siblings, so she knows something about holding her own in a crowded field, say, a congressional contest in South Carolina’s 1st district that on the Republican side looks more like a convention than a primary race. The Democratic candidate also has 21 years executive experience in the maritime industry, and five in education research and technology at the Clemson Restoration Institute and its wind turbine initiative. “Women in leadership listen, they ask questions, they know how to compromise, and they take responsibility,” says this mother of three and grandmom twice over, who feels deeply indebted to her larger family— the Charleston community—for its support after an airplane crash killed her father and two brothers in 1974. “This community took care of me, and now it’s my turn to give back.” To donate or volunteer: www.elizabethcolbertbusch.com

I needed the rebellious, celebratory, fiercely independent spirit embedded in the music and people the way someone else might need a particular vitamin.

S

Stacy Appel

ix months after my mother died, I happened to fall in love. First with a movie and then a band and finally, an entire culture. There was a man, too, in the end, but he was only a postscript to the entire surprising love letter. As autumn reluctantly gave way to a colder season, I’d almost gotten used to the way my heart felt drawn and shuttered. I needed this flattening out after the swift free fall precipitated by Mom’s sudden illness. My father, who’d gone back to D.C., was still in the midst of intense grieving, but I felt frozen and preoccupied. I concentrated on simply marking time. The agenda before me was clear—face down a dull parade of winter days and perform efficiently at the hospital where I worked. Thankfully, no one seemed to notice I wasn’t quite there. But nature conspires against what has gone numb or missing. First, I fell in love with a movie. After driving to a local multiplex one Sunday, weary of my own company and the tedium of completing my mother’s insurance forms, I learned that the comedy I’d planned to see was sold out. No matter, one film would be as distracting as the next. I ended up in the next auditorium, content to munch popcorn and spend a little while watching a film about which I knew nothing. Five minutes in, I was hooked. In Belizaire the Cajun, handsome Armand Assante plays a faith-healing, rule-breaking Cajun in nineteenth-century Louisiana who butts heads with greedy local bigots trying to run him and his

Cabana Gauze fellow Cajuns, or Acadians, out of state. Louisiana laws, like the plot twists, are complex, and Belizaire’s life-long love, Alida, is the common-law wife of his biggest rival. When a tragedy befalls the community, the rebellious, instinct-driven Belizaire must be blamed. An independent movie made on a shoe-string budget, the film made me happy, an emotion I’d almost forgotten. As I watched, the iced-over pond within began to thaw, first by way of the passionate, fiddle-driven soundtrack, and then by the color and complexity of the historically based story. I loved the morally complicated Southern world portrayed in the film. Unpredictable and energetic, full of kisses, lies and horse chases, it was a web of virtue and prejudice. Swarthy Belizaire seemed alternately manipulative or healing but always compelling. The array of colorful characters were drawn from a life vastly different from my own, but I felt I recognized them all. The film’s theme song stole my heart, too, in a way no song before or since has ever managed to do. “Madame Sosthene,” performed by Michael Doucet and his band Beaujolais, was earthy, sexy, almost primitive in its lilting way. It haunted me and led to a brand new chapter of discovery. I hummed it in the car going home, but soon I craved hearing it again in the same way one longs for a lover’s familiar voice. Sleuthing, I came upon a stuffed-to-therafters neighborhood record store, Arhoolie Records’ Down Home Music, which held a treasure trove of hard-to-find music from all over the country. Down Home Music had a vast archive of Cajun and Zydeco music, with albums by Michael Doucet and all the other masters of the genre: Marc and Ann Savoy, Dewey Balfa, Clifton Chenier, Zachary Richard, and more than a dozen others. Cajun music found its way into my house, my car, my life. A while later, I was thrilled to discover filmmaker Les Blank’s documentary, J’ai Été Au Bal (“I Went to the Ball”) along with all his other short films about rural Louisiana musicians, cooks, and culture. The Cajun tradition seemed full of rough-hewn vitality which had gone missing in my own world. I needed the rebellious, celebratory, fiercely independent spirit embedded in the music and people the way someone else might need a particular vitamin. Would I have fallen for Bryan at all without first falling in love with Belizaire? I’ll never know, but looking back, I have a feeling every single step of the journey back to love needed to happen exactly as it did. Bryan, a New Orleans transplant to the San Francisco Bay Area, was a stranger who asked me to dance at a bar one night, and not so long after, the man I would see almost every night of the week. Funny, darkly handsome, with long unruly hair, he had an unkempt manner of dressing unless he was trying hard, which most men couldn’t get away with in the same way; he was a slender, taller Belizaire. He sang along to music, with or without a few beers, and made jambalaya, good strong coffee, red beans and rice. Bryan had stories about the people he’d known in New Orleans and his favorite night spots like Tipitina’s. There were strands of Mardi Gras beads strung above his bed. He made me happy, and we danced together every chance we got. The Cajun song, “J’étais Au Bal,” written, recorded and performed many ways, is about going to the dance every night, dressed in a different color. “I went to the dance last night and I’ve come again tonight; If the occasion presents itself again, I’ll come back tomorrow night.” Fast forward to 2013, a different-colored time, in which my heart still soars, falls, melts and rebels, but fortunately no longer freezes. Bryan lives not far away, married to a devoted woman who shares his love of skiing, along with their two boys. I see the Savoy family pretty often at the music coffeehouse where I am on staff; they are always as kind and relaxed as the last time they visited, and somehow ever more talented in performance. My small house looks untidy, with an overflow of Cajun, Zydeco and other kinds of CDs spilling from bookshelves or ledges, as if I am a self-appointed satellite office of Down Home Music store. One of the best surprises of the last decade was the shock of going through a box of my late grandmother’s personal effects, and coming across a detailed history and map of a small Acadian branch of my very own family—one which my mother never mentioned and possibly never knew existed. While I don’t know whether I’ll fall in love again this year, I do know I’m going to the ball. Stacy Appel wishes you a Delightful New Year from Lafayette, CA. Sam Candler and Lynnie Minkowski are good sports. In high school, Sam learned to play squash so he could compete with Lynnie in her family’s favorite sport. Now, the couple coordinates Chucktown Squash with Lynnie as program director and Sam as executive director. They “decided to take on the challenge together” after the nonprofit was established in 2010 by Lynnie’s sister, modeled off of a national program “to bring urban squash and education to the southeast.” Fifth-grade students are recruited to strengthen self-motivation, self-reliance, competitiveness and self-discipline as they shuffle, swing and aim for college acceptance through middle school and into high school. The group devotes weekdays to an hour and a half of court time at College of Charleston, followed by tutoring in the classroom “where the real success happens.” Saturdays are spent at the MUSC wellness center. Sam and Lynnie hold the kids accountable with the help of college volunteers and they strive to “open up their eyes, allow the students to say, ‘I belong in college.’”

Jimmy and Tommye Priest had an “I do” re-do. When Jimmy and Tommye met as blind dates for a fraternity formal, they didn’t know they would take their vows twice before mastering their marriage. “We had fun. We were partiers.” They got engaged after a month and were wed two years later. But Tommye, an operations manager at Beacon Communications, and Jimmy, a dining facility manager at College of Charleston, broke apart after 24 years, two children and phases of counseling. “We just were not happy together.” They found friendship for four years, even attempting to act like a couple at family functions. “We both made an oath that our kids would not suffer from our problems.” After a church retreat, Tommye suddenly called Jimmy, realizing she was still in love. “Every friend and every family member was saying, ‘Go for it.’” So they said their vows during a summer wedding and are still strong after four more years. “We look for the good now. That’s the difference.”

Valerie and David Gresham are bonded by betrothals. Instead of date night, David and Valerie maintain a passionate marriage through a project. Their affinity for photography turned them toward the bridal business and bolstered their idea for the Charleston Multicultural Bridal and Events Association in 2012. They noticed the need for a greater variety of cultural representation in the local bridal market, with vendors from all backgrounds available for diverse weddings. So despite their separate careers—Valerie teaches composition, American, African American, and multicultural literatures at College of Charleston and David is a mechatronics engineer—the couple is in constant communication. CMBEA is “something to keep our marriage lively in common interests.” Initially, David was inspired by Valerie’s academic insight that “multiculturalism is everyone.” He wanted vendors to learn to promote themselves “in a more proficient manner.” Together the two give brides the gateway for information about experienced multicultural vendors and wedding trends. “It’s like a communion of our souls and our efforts and our spirits.”

Sue Weller and Jen Bennett are changing the state’s state of mind. Newlyweds Sue and Jen fell head over heels over philanthropy. Jen, owner and artist of Images on King Street, and Sue, a real estate agent with Carolina One, were drawn to each other’s devotion to making a difference. Sue sits as a board member of the Charleston Pride Festival, promoting equal rights and change for LGBT communities through events. Jen serves South Carolina Equality and its Gay-Straight Alliance Network to create connections and legislation “that will protect our rights as lesbians living in South Carolina.” The couple was married in a Charleston church in October but must travel to New York for documentation. “And when we return to our home state, that marriage license won’t be recognized.” In spite of the setback, Sue and Jen have relaxed into their relationship and careers and want to stop others’ struggles with identity and sexuality. “It’s not always easy growing up a minority, especially when there are not always laws and rights to protect us.”

There are many aspects to romance. Maybe foolish faith is one.

Susi Gregg Fowler

I

grew up in Juneau, Alaska, with mountains as my backyard, but it is both easy and dangerous to be too cocky around these mountains. Any idiot knows that, but not necessarily any idiot young and in love, which describes me one long-ago Labor Day. My sweetheart Jim and I had decided to celebrate the holiday by ascending a familiar mountain in an unfamiliar way. It was September, but a wedge gouged out of the mountain by snow slides was still filled with last year’s snow. We thought it would be a lark to see how far up the gulch we could travel on snow, figuring we’d scramble onto the ridge once the going got rough. Throughout the summer, our weekend hikes found us loaded with packs, ropes, and ice axes. This glorious day was just an easy day hike, so off we headed in shorts, shirts, and hiking boots, carrying only water and snacks. We headed up Perseverance Trail, slid down to the creek floor beneath the gulch, and walked onto the snow. Water trickled beneath us where underlayers of snow had melted, but we were light and fast and sped over the snow, laughing at our occasional breaks through the snow crust. Occasionally we stopped, craning our necks to judge how far up the snow would take us.

72  februaryw2013

charleston.skirt.com

Sucker Love

We misread the gulch. It was far steeper than it appeared from below, but we kept on anyway. Increasingly, we were forced to negotiate the far edges of the snow. We slipped on scree, trying not to send rocks tumbling to the creek bed below, and scrambled through brush and rock fall, relying on our hands and arms as much as our feet and legs to continue our movement upward. Scramble is defined as “a hasty, undignified, or disorganized struggle for something in order to do something.” Yep. We were scrambling. The fun was wearing thin, the going far more difficult than we were prepared for. We could no longer navigate the snow, and the slope was almost vertical. By now, the terrain looked even more unfriendly for a descent, so we kept going. At what point we actually became uneasy, I’m not sure. Noticing the sun’s progress across the sky didn’t help. We tried to pick up our pace, climbing alongside the gulch and clinging to alder branches as we struggled to find secure enough footing to carry us from one patch of brush to the next. When the going reached its worst, Jim, with his greater upper-body strength, led the way, bracing himself against rocks and branches to pull himself onto rock ledges, then reaching down to help me. Jim, above me, had hold of my arms as I was walking my way up a rock when I lost my footing completely. I kicked around for someplace for my feet to land. I tried to pull up with my arms. I have a vivid memory of looking up through a web of alder leaves between me and the rich blue of the sky as I dangled, Jim’s hands gripping my wrists, and thinking, “I could die.” Terrified to look down, I chided myself for being melodramatic. Trying to hide my panic, I hollered up, “Just tell me. Am I okay?” All I saw were leaves and Jim’s hands and wrists, crisscrossed with angry red scratches. “You’re fine, babe. I’ve got you,” he answered, his voice steady, confident. Secure in that, Jim holding my forearms tightly, I swung my legs, found a rock I could push against, and with our combined arm strength, I reached safety. Clinging to Jim on a small rock outcropping, both of us breathing hard, I looked down. There was nothing below. Nothing. Jim stared at me. “I can’t believe you believed me,” he said. “You’re crazy, you know? You were dangling over how many feet, nothing but rock below. How could you possibly have been safe?” “But you said…..” Peering down, I didn’t finish my sentence. I’ve wondered if that was when he decided to marry me. There are many aspects to romance. Maybe foolish faith is one. That was the worst of the climb, and soon we crossed into alpine above the gulch, continuing toward the trail. The view from the top was, as ever, breathtaking, but as we’d feared, by the time we hit the trail and reached tree line, it was too dark to see the path. We’d taken enough chances for one day, so we decided to wait until dawn. We weren’t at risk of freezing, but it wasn’t comfortable either, without jackets or supper. I hoped my roommate wouldn’t worry, and I really hoped she wouldn’t send anyone to look for us. Jim had the excuse of being a relative newcomer to Alaska. There was no excuse for my foolishness. And next, my hard contacts started hurting. I’d be helplessly dependent without my “eyes,” but I had to remove the lenses. Wrapping them in my hanky, I was now blind as a bat only without benefit of echolocation. Helpless and humiliated twice in one day. Jim literally led me to a tree off the trail, and we hunkered against it to wait for dawn. A commotion in the bushes brought me to attention: Bear! I, whom Jim had led blind and stumbling off the trail, found the path miraculously illuminated before me. I was on the trail and up past the tree line before Jim even realized I was gone. I daresay my bruin was a porcupine, but Jim followed, laughing at my startlingly improved vision. We tucked into a hollow and talked long into the night. Our conversation was equal parts embarrassment at our stupidity, relief at being safe, amazement at being together, and awe at the glory of that night. Perhaps its beauty was made more vibrant by what we’d been through. Perhaps it was love. The moon hung above us, nearly full, and it seemed so close, I almost believed we could touch it. The stars may have been shaking a little with laughter at the pair of us as they danced above us huddled below. We finally drifted to sleep, woke at first light, and headed home. There have been many hikes (better prepared for) and many years together since our Labor Day hike, but the memory of that climb still makes me shudder and the image of that night’s beauty still lights me up. And maybe I’m a sucker, but for some reason I still believe this guy when he assures me, “You’re fine, babe. I’ve got you.”

All for a great cause.

Thai Taste When local businessman Joe Margarite returned to Charleston from trips to Thailand, he missed the coconut juice he’d enjoyed there. When he couldn’t find the same quality in the U.S., he began searching for the best source of young green Thai coconuts and teamed with groves, producers and a canner that he was confident would help him produce and package the finest and freshest Thai coconut water available. The result was 100% natural Rising Sun Thai Coconut Water, available at Whole Foods, Piggly Wiggly and selected local outlets.

Hometown Heroes Growing up on Rainbow Row, Matt and Ted Lee knew how to cast for shrimp before they were in middle school, and could catch and pick crabs soon after. Their knowledge of the food of the Lowcountry is encyclopedic and their writing about it nationally recognized. We wish we could have dinner in Matt and Ted’s actual kitchen, but their new book out this month is the next best thing. The Lee Bros. Charleston Kitchen has 100 recipes (both traditional and with a modern twist) culled from interviews with chefs, home cooks, farmers, fishermen, caterers, and yes, funeral directors. TO KISS OR NOT TO KISS

I was exhausted, hungover, dirty, and I had just done the unthinkable— I had kissed my best friend.

F

Jen Wittes

rom the top of the hotel’s outer staircase, we watched the security guards scramble across the lawn in little golf carts. Next came a small fire truck and my relief that the blaze was immediately subdued. The boys were laughing, slapping backs, their breath ragged with awe and adrenaline. Seconds before, we had sprinted across that grass and up 15 flights of stairs, after singing and sipping spiked peach punch around a lone haystack—bizarre in itself on the manicured landscape of the San Diego resort, even before it caught fire. Some girl had lit a match, followed by another one. Soon, there were three little campfires going in three different spots around the perimeter of the pile. How brazen and ultimately stupid we were to think that a bunch of dry hay would dutifully keep three cute flames perfectly contained without spreading—quickly—into a mountain of flames. Mountain of flames might be an exaggeration, but that’s how it seemed to me, watching from above, lungs stinging with smoke and exertion, heart thumping with panic and guilt. “Is this arson?” I asked, feeling certain that we’d go to jail. “Nah, just a little fire,” one of the guys said. “Let’s get out of here,” I told Ken, swallowing back bile as I watched the small fire team continue to douse the few remaining flames—our flames, which had somehow become my burden, even though I’d never lit a match. Ken and I descended the stairs, trying to act casual, and ran in the opposite direction of the haystack. We were working another summer bridge tournament, our fifth together, both of us children of players. At nineteen, I called Ken my best friend. Growing up on opposite coasts, we visited each other’s high schools, weighed in on one another’s college application essays, and had shared—via long distance phone call—those delicious and devastating secrets that accompany coming of age. Both my first and second loves were two of Ken’s oldest friends. Naturally, this made him my closest confidant and—however misguided—advice source for all things romantic.

Ken was witness to my first kiss, and I—concerned that if he waited any longer it would never happen—propositioned a girl for him and thus was witness to his. Two years later, Ken walked me through his cold New England suburb on New Year’s Eve as I headed off to lose my virginity. As we said goodbye on the corner where Ken’s street met my boyfriend’s, we shared an awkward hug and tried to find the appropriate words for the occasion. “Well, this is it!” I said. “Good luck!” he replied. “It’s perfect that you’re the one sending me off,” I told him. Because he had, at that point, been there for everything else that I considered important. As fate would have it, he would also be there about twenty minutes later, when I came knocking at his back door, crying, after my boy had failed to wake up to the several pennies I’d thrown at his bedroom window. The night of the haystack fire found its denouement, of all places, on a slanted slab of concrete under the freeway ramp. The small makeshift passageway was filthy, and by the time I’d shakily climbed to the back wall, I was covered in a mysterious layer of grime. Were we hiding from the fire fighters? The concierge? I can’t remember. And I can’t remember, either, how we suddenly got on the subject of whether or not we should finally kiss. It’s not like it had come up often. Our boy-girl friendship wasn’t perpetually wrought with sexual tension. Admittedly, while down with the chicken pox and simultaneously mired in the nauseating muck of ambiguous first love, I watched When Harry Met Sally, and thought, “Yes! That’s it. My best friend. That would be so much easier.” But as much as I wanted to want him like that, I didn’t. Ken, too, had his moments of romantic delusion—usually after his own disappointing end to some big crush—in which he swore he was in love with me. It usually pissed me off, and I’d wait anxiously for him to snap out of it. At one point, we made the proverbial promise to marry each other if all else failed and we hadn’t managed to land a proper mate by the ripe old age of 25, agreeing that we’d probably actually be quite happy together. I suppose this begs the old question: Can a man and woman really be just friends? Covered in dirt and soot, under the humming freeway, Ken and I were about to find out. To kiss or not to kiss, we asked by coin toss. Heads, we would; tails, skip it. We hovered nervously over the nickel, difficult to see under the shadow of the overpass. Tails. I looked up at him, tense and disappointed. It’s not that I really wanted to; I just didn’t want to revisit the situation down the road. “We should do it anyway,” he said. “Yeah. It’s kind of now or never,” I replied. I’m pretty sure I cringed as I leaned in. The kiss was long enough and not entirely passionless, but we weren’t exactly clinging to each other in a wild fit of desire. “Weird,” he said. “Yeah,” I agreed. And then we dragged our mucked-up, slimy, grimy, tired selves to the only place we knew would take us…Denny’s. Over pancakes, Ken delighted in the night’s adventures, proclaiming it another summer night for the history books. I wasn’t so sure. I was exhausted, hungover, dirty, and I had just done the unthinkable—I had kissed my best friend. This summer night deserved—in my opinion—a moment of quiet reflection. Under the freeway I’d lost my back-up my plan, and yet what I gained was a different kind of promise. Continuing his constant inclusion in my major plot points, Ken attended my remote Minnesota wedding, brought me coffee when my mother went in for heart surgery, and listened as I fretted over the fate of my troubled marriage. Shortly after my separation, Ken was the first person I told about my shy and messy reunion with that no longer ambiguous first love, his childhood friend. And when we, as a couple, attended Ken’s wedding last summer, the world patiently stood by and allowed my best friend and me to have one of our signature late-night hotel ballroom talks, as we had at various bridge tournaments, years ago. Can a man and a woman really be friends? If they’re lucky.

Putting on my usual all-black outfit on a cold, gray day, I suddenly had a craving for a red dress. Red like an amaryllis blossom lighting up a winter room. Red like a prayer flag billowing in a winter wind. Red like the last flash of sun setting over a winter sea. When you feel the call of a dress as red as the sound of a siren, there’s only one thing you can do--put it on and start a fire.

Looking forward to:

W h a t ’s k e e p i n g m e a w a k e a t n i g h t :

An hour in a float tank, wine and Skype date with my daughters, Sunday nights at Abe’s bar after yoga, cherry pie on President’s Day, fresh starts, walking the Brooklyn Bridge. I am jealous of:

W h a t ’s o n m y m i n d : W h a t ’s o n m y i pa d : I’m always looking for new-to-me blogs and websites, and right now I’m in love with GalaDarling. com. Gala is a New Zealander who now lives in New York, and her passion is teaching women how to fall in love with themselves…and have fun at the same time. From her Radical Self-Love Bootcamp to her book, Love and Sequins, she combines glitter with grit, style with sincerity.

Even though it was Obama’s second swearing-in, I was incredibly moved all over again to see a person of color elected President. Having lived through the civil rights era and vividly remembering Martin Luther King’s March on Washington, there’s no way to overstate the significance of this moment in history to me. I’m convinced that no matter how long or bumpy the road ahead to full equality for all citizens, we will never go back to the bad old days of Selma and Stonewall.
