Dear 2014, bring it! Bring on the people I’ve yet to meet. I know they’re out there heading my way. Cosmic hitchhikers, wild-eyed visionaries, creative playmates, spiritual sherpas, new friends with old souls, teachers of one important lesson, messengers who don’t even realize they have a mission, survivors and lost souls, beauty mongers and partymakers, temporary seatmates and sturdy companions for the long haul. Bring on the big moments, the hard roads, the everyday hallelujahs. The falling down and getting back up, the vault of heaven on a fall day, the brokenness and being healed, the
ship that comes in, the tide that goes out, the first day of spring and the last day of school, glitter and gold stars, the pop of corks and the best haircut ever. Bring on heartbreak and foolishness, mistakes and making up, good intentions and reinvention, wide eyes and open hearts. Bring on everything I have yet to be. Dating solutions for Charleston’s Christian
Singles
I am asked all the time, “How do I find other quality, compatible, Christian singles who want a meaningful relationship?”
“
I
sympathize with Christian singles in the Charleston area, as there are very few methods to meet someone that is compatible, wants the same things from life that you do, and shares similar values,” says Heather Olson, Director of Romance for ChristianSinglesDate.org, Charleston’s oldest, and most respected traditional matchmaking firm. “So many people resort to the internet these days, which brings about so many obstacles, from safety to whether or not the person is even single! Studies have shown that close to 38% of internet profiles are from married people, or people already in a serious relationship.” ChristianSinglesDate.org avoids these hassles by personally meeting with each potential member beforehand, not only to get to know their personality and desires, but to keep it safe for our current members by performing background checks. “Our service is not for
everyone,” says Mrs. Olson. “If you’re in the market just to ‘date’ and hang out with as many people as you can, with no real goals in mind, our service is not for you.” Don’t think everyone who comes to see us is ready for the altar either, however they definitely want a good, wholesome, loving, monogamous relationship. Too many people just don’t know where they are, or what they want out of life. As unfortunate as this may be, ChristianSinglesDate.org cannot subject our members to an individual with little focus or direction in regards to their love life, and this one of the top aspects of what we do, and what our members appreciate. Our service is selective and we work with you one-on-one to assist you in getting a clearer vision of what you are looking for, and preparation to move forward in meeting other compatible singles.
If you’re exhausted with the internet, or simply looking for a safer, more time-efficient way to find someone special, then take a moment to consider ChristianSinglesDate.org, and call one of our Relationship Specialists today.

I’m secretly convinced that I’m the type of person who collapses in the face of adversity. I would have given up halfway across the plains in a covered wagon. “Just leave me by the side of the road,” is my mantra in tough situations. The truth is you can fly if you stop lying to yourself.

From the Editor I rarely dare to make resolutions for a new year. The truth is that my strict resolve turns to vacillating indifference and I forget about my new rules as the days get longer and the months get warmer. Daily decrees—green smoothies, walk another thousand steps, meditate—are no match for my honest inclination to take each day as it comes. Come January 1, I’ll be the same as I’ll be on January 31: brave, scared, impossibly optimistic, but a pragmatic planner. I’ll dream, debate, laugh till I cry, and read till I sleep. But it’s the truth that I’ll always take a dare—like Linda and Natalie, an ember of an idea can ignite new life. Natalie’s literal life-saving kidney, dubbed “Lefty,” and Linda’s leap into leadership will bring change to Charleston long after the glint of the new year is gone, and long past 2014, too. So even if you aren’t the resolution type, remember to take a dare when one comes to mind. Be bold and spontaneous and truthful—2014 is yours for the taking. Margaret

January in San Francisco can be gray and damp; holiday cheer has worn itself out, and no one is fully ready to get back to business.

’ve done some brave and foolish things over the years. Egged on by my friend Amy’s little sister, I once jumped from a 12foot-high porch railing into an ice-cold outdoor dip tank. I abruptly left a man I loved when he was unfaithful for the second time and moved to a New England town with no job, no plan, and knowing only one person there. I smuggled my terminally ill mother onto an airplane flight from Washington, D.C., to California so she could spend the last three weeks of her life in the new home she’d designed. Once in my early twenties, as an assignment for an alternative psychology class I was taking, I played guitar and sang in San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square while another student danced. This assignment was terrifying, since I hadn’t played in public since I was 16. Astoundingly, passersby threw money into my open guitar case, as if we were buskers. Tonight I’m seated in a warm, crowded room only a few blocks from Ghirardelli, not nearly as self-conscious, but nervous nonetheless. I’ve come to this club tonight as a sort of experiment, nostalgic for the old days when I used to attend comedy performances regularly on dates or with friends. January in San Francisco can be gray and damp; holiday cheer has worn itself out, and no one is fully ready to get back to business. The city’s ever-present fog makes

people want to huddle together in neighborhood bars drinking Irish coffee, or gather in coffeehouses where you can barely hear the guitarist over the din of conversations. I’m glad to be here in the midst of a chattering, enthusiastic crowd. Still, is stand-up comedy really the kind of thing one goes to alone? Most of the people here tonight seem to have sauntered in with a posse or a spouse. I like the other three people at my table, though I’ve known them all of 20 minutes. So far, so good. They’ve already shifted their chairs slightly in order to give me a better view of the stage, and one of them even called the waiter over to take my drink order. It’s almost as if we all decided to go to the comedy club together. They seem not the least bit bothered that the hostess seated me at their table, a common practice in this small club. The two who are drinking something amber-colored on the rocks are apparently a couple, and introduce themselves as Anna and Trey. Between sips of his beer, their friend Michael tells us about the time he heard Wanda Sykes perform here, recounting a few of the funniest bits. The three of them are relaxed, generous; they effortlessly include me in their conversation, for which I am secretly grateful. My tablemates and I know nothing about the headliner other than the fact that he’s a stand-up comedian from L.A. He’s probably not getting paid especially well, either. The club offered last-minute discount tickets, which means he has no following yet. But this eccentric city has always been especially hospitable to comics, and audiences are willing to give almost anyone a shot. Though many of the best-known clubs from the old days have closed their doors or transformed themselves into restaurants, San Francisco is where unknowns like Phyllis Diller, Dana Carvey, and Whoopi Goldberg got their initial breaks, and there are comedy festivals year-round. The two warm-up acts are only mildly funny. They still receive resounding applause, and why not? Stand-up takes unimaginable courage. We are relieved for them, glad they made it through their sets intact. But the main performer will have to kick it up a notch, or the restless audience may lose its goodwill. Fortunately, the star of the evening is superbly talented. He embarks on long, quirky, autobiographical glimpses from his life, and strikes just the right tone of self-deprecation and wit. He masters the accent and dialogue of his crazy martial arts teacher to relate a story that is at once savagely funny and cosmically profound, and circles back to his original themes like an expert flamenco dancer. Not once does he resort to easy gags or off-color humor, and the stories build on each other via some kind of invisible stepping-stones, so there’s a cumulative effect that has us all spellbound. I glance at the other people at my table. Anna is laughing so hard she has to wipe away tears from her eyes. The evening nears its close. The comedian asks us very formally to close our eyes and bow our heads, and the house lights go down a little bit more. We do as we are told, wondering what gag he’s got up his sleeve. Some people are chuckling in anticipation. “Repeat after me: I am a light in the darkness.” “I am a light in the darkness,” chants the audience dutifully. “No matter what has gone before in my life, I feel the light inside me expanding outward.” We repeat his words. A few in the crowd are chortling out loud now, though no one is sure what to expect. Everything so far has been hilarious, and we are eager participants. He goes on for quite a while, speaking softly and distinctly into the microphone, asking us to repeat phrases after him. “I am wise.” “I feel Divine Intelligence within me and around me.” He asks us to listen to the silence. We are feeling really, really good now, waiting for the final big punch line. The house lights go up. There is no punch line. There isn’t even any applause, since he evidently walked offstage just before asking us to open our eyes. My tablemates and I look at one another, puzzled and delighted. We have all just been tricked into meditating in the middle of a boozy downtown nightclub. The crowd is a little confused, but the peaceful camaraderie in the room is unmistakable, as is the feeling of joy. No one says a word as we exit through the lobby into the windy night. We have just been ambushed by something unexpected, something more non-linear and more meaningful than humor, and we are glad for the brilliance of it, though we don’t understand what happened. What a brave and foolish evening. Stacy Appel is an award-winning writer in California whose work has been featured in the Chicago Tribune and other publications. Lynn Caldwell teaches the teachers. With a line of relatives in the education system, Lynn has a penchant for pedagogy. “Education runs through my veins.” He taught for seven years before he became a full release mentor at the Office of Teacher Effectiveness for the Charleston County School District. With this title, he trains new teachers and has 40 men and women under his wing. “For both genders, it’s a very difficult job.” Lynn assesses classroom situations and determines methods for helping teachers with responsibilities like carrying out curriculum, planning, and classroom management, which he concedes is particularly tricky. “When I was a kid playing school, I played with stuffed animals, and stuffed animals were really compliant.” For those who teach real children in a real school, he provides a piece of personal education: “If I can make it, you definitely can make it as well.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “I like that with each issue there is something for everyone.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “It’s great to experience things that others are afraid to do.”

’m dating a 6’2” Glaswegian with a motorbike. Three weeks ago I sent him an email with the subject heading “I Am, Like, So Superficial” and wrote: I want to see you in your leathers. He showed up three days later on a big motherschtupper of a bike, kitted with gear and a spare set of leathers he demanded I put on. Well, mine weren’t leathers— they were reinforced Gore-Tex with more zips than an Air Force jumpsuit—but I managed to catch a glimpse of myself in the window of a Land Rover, ostensibly to clip on the helmet, and although no one would have mistaken me for Lucy Liu in Charlie’s Angels, neither would I have been taken for a black nylon, moon-suited incarnation of the Michelin Man. “Why do you have such tiny clothes?” I asked as the wrists, waist and collar all snapped snugly into place. “For my daughter,” he said, putting on his helmet. He paused and grinned. “And my girlfriends.” Contrary to received wisdom on this subject, I like hearing that men I’m dating have had other girlfriends. Multiple girlfriends, even. Heck, wives. I benefit hugely from all the awareness my sisters have infused into the vocabulary, attitude, and sexual confidence of the guy I’m going home with. I wish one of those girlfriends or wives, however, had carved a little message onto the back of the Glaswegian’s helmet that I could read before I was riding pillion on the M25 going 70 mph: “This man is a maniacal speed freak and he will try to kill you.”

Lessons From the Road
I must say, at the outset, that there is nothing more relative than the experience of speed and time. Einstein knew it and pointed it out, and we’ve been toasting him in our GPS-equipped vehicles ever since. (Without Einstein’s law of relativity the satellites could not coordinate accurately with your car—who knew?) I understand the fly sees the world in slow motion and that’s how it’s able to avoid the swatter. One woman’s saunter is another woman’s dash. I get it. However. This awareness did not make for a less artery-hardening, terrifying experience when the Glaswegian, who up till this point had obviously just been puttering along, now decided, crouching over the engine of his royal blue Ducati, to make good use of a bit of open highway and speed up. I could have sworn that he started to hum. Some tuneless little melody that speed freaks sing as they trifle, murderously, with the psyche of their passengers. All of me pressed up against quite-a-bit-of-him could feel his shoulders, back and legs quivering with increasing delight. He was in heaven. Whereas I couldn’t hear the traffic around us because of the throatrending screams inside my head. I couldn’t feel my arms around the Glaswegian’s waist because my body was sending all useful blood to my vital organs. I was on the verge of losing consciousness, not because I was channelling the airman whose uniform I seemed to be wearing and was pulling G, but because going that fast so close to the ground was an experience I just wanted to get away from. How could I make this stop? And suddenly, in a blinding flash of insight, the answer occurred to me: Jump Off. It’s at this point in the narrative that I’m reminded of what it’s like, at times, to be a writer co-running a production company. Christine, my managing director, and I are rather ambitious. Our desires for our work hurtle at breakneck speed across the cosmos of our lives. We adore developing scripts. We are passionate about our mission to showcase women over 35 and have attracted a board of directors (with credentials up the wazoo) who support us and want a worldwide audience for the stories we love to tell. These dreams are fast dreams. And if we don’t keep up, if we look down, we can tense up, get scared and want to abort. In mid-leap. Yesterday I dropped off a script we’ve been refining for the whole three years of our incorporation at a good London theater with West End connections. I parked my bike and strode up to the theater, glancing at the five-star reviews on the posters in the window sporting names like Antony Sher and Anton Chekhov, and before I opened the doors, I thought “What if they don’t like it? What if they say ‘No’? What if I fail?” Part of my brain shouted “Get back on the bike! Go home! Go to bed! Go to sleep! FOR YEARS.” Because sleeping is something I can do quite well. And no one ever tells me my sleeping isn’t what they’re looking for or something they’re already producing, but many thanks for letting us see it and good luck elsewhere. But. There just isn’t that much uninhibited, heart-launchingly, spiritquickeningly, life-affirming joy in sleeping. And desire and ambition as intense, as fuelled, as large as ours requires another technique. The Glaswegian slowed down to neatly duck the cluster of cars ahead, and I gasped a whisper of air into my lungs, allowing some blood to flow back to my brain. This gave me the resources to question the wisdom of avoiding terror by leaping under the oncoming rubber, chrome and steel, leaving my heart—and lungs and kidneys—in Buckinghamshire forever. We took the next exit, and while idling at a traffic light, I lifted my visor with a shaking hand and whimpered, “That’s a bit fast for me.” He put a warm, gloved hand on my thigh, nodded, and from that point on we had a leisurely motor through green and pleasant countryside. Apologizing for my wimpiness over a pub lunch, I reconfirmed We Wouldn’t Go That Fast Again. He was receptive and kind and assured me we wouldn’t. “I was just trying it out,” he said smiling. “Different passengers, different speeds.” I wondered if he was thinking of other, racier girlfriends. I imagined them, clutching his middle and urging him on to greater and wilder miles per hour. I saluted them. “How can you enjoy it?” I said, my lunch all the tastier after the adrenaline rush. “How come that doesn’t scare the hell out of you?” He didn’t have to think about it. “I’m relaxed,” he said. Which, in the face of both raging artistic desires and land-speed-recordbreaking highway journeys, seems like a pretty good choice. Stephanie Young is the author of 17 produced scripts for radio, television and theatre and Artistic Director of Mofardin Young Production Company. She lives in London, UK.

Cuban Bul
Deviled Eggs Beer growlers cost a small fee up front but can be refilled at Whole Foods for just the cost of the brew. Get a growler in either 32 or 64 oz sizes.
Give old standards a peppy kick with old-fashioned ginger ale and a hint of wasabi. Whole Foods always has beers on rotation, and even though we scored a growler of Allagash White, this Cuban Bul beer spritzer works well with similar Belgian-style wheat ales. Our wasabi deviled eggs are a great match for the beer—an easy, casual style, but with a great party presentation. Southern Season is a great resource for specialty mustard.
32 oz growler of Allagash White 3 12 oz cans Vernors ginger ale 1-2 tbsp sugar 12 limes
Vernors ginger ale was invented by Detroit pharmacist James Vernor in 1866 and is still aged in oak barrels.
Combine first three items in a large pitcher. Incorporate 1 cup lime juice and use remaining limes for wedge garnishes. Pour over ice.
From the skirt! Office Test Kitchen
8 large eggs 2 tbsp mayo Âź c wasabi mustard 2 large scallions, minced (reserve some for garnish) Coarse salt to taste Hard-boil the eggs, halve lengthwise, and transfer yolks to a medium bowl. Mash yolks until smooth and add remaining ingredients. Spoon the filling back into whites, top with remaining scallion garnish.
We used wasabi mustard, but if you’re seeking more heat, add wasabi paste.

Linda Page wants women (and men) engaged. Though Linda previously had a seat at the table—of government—she’s now sitting in the prime spot thanks to a successful campaign for Mayor of Mount Pleasant. With a four-year term ahead of her, Linda will draw from her time on the Mount Pleasant Town Council, the board of the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority, the Women’s Advisory Board of East Cooper Hospital and more. Though Linda says she had “some mud slung” her way, she encourages other women to run for office, especially those who are already leaders in their respective communities. “I would tell other women to ‘lean in,’ it’s a public service and it’s rewarding—there are other women that will help you.” And the leader of the fourth-largest municipality in South Carolina says the job’s already pretty plum: “The gig’s great. I want to make our processes open and transparent and I want citizens engaged. My office is open to all.”

Natalie Taylor spreads kidney kindness. Perfect timing propelled a chain of kidney donations that began in Charleston, went across the country and boomeranged back within a week. The final of four donations was gifted to a girl at MUSC, and Natalie was the catalyst. “All these people got a second chance at life.” She’s devoted time to the Peace Corps, Charleston Waterkeeper and MUSC, where she researched their organ donation program. Natalie applied to the latter and then, after a six-month stretch of medical testing and consultations—all while managing Charleston Sweet Gourmet—got approved. Her kidney, which she named “Lefty,” flew to California to a recipient whose voluntary donor was not a match. The incompatible donor then gave a kidney to the transplant list. “It’s an ongoing IOU until the matching works.” Natalie promised her family she wouldn’t offer up any more body parts as service projects, but says, “It was as simple as donating my time and as cool as going skydiving!”
