From the Editor One constant throughout my life has been a planner—a paper and pen solution to biology homework, travel itineraries, family birthdays, vet visits and deadlines. No smartphone app or online collaboration can replace personal parenthetical notations or paperclipped addresses for appointments. Scanning the upcoming weeks’ worth of scribbles and highlighted alerts gives way to glee or panic (usually deadline-dependent), but every now and then I look backwards and remember what it was like to be unfamiliar with tomorrow. As a teen, I was sure I’d buy a red Jeep and live in California. In college, I saw pantsuits in my future. Last week I was considering highlights.Yet none made it to my planner, my day-to-day guide to today and tomorrow. And starting to mark up 2013’s pages leaves me to wonder—what are our Fresh Faces planning for this year, for next year, for the great, wide open tomorrows? Have they put it in writing, or do they see it in the stars? Salome, Candice and Shelby are making strides today for their peers—inspirational and educational—and preparing for success tomorrow.

EDUCATIONAL LECTURES DEMONSTRATIONS ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES!

I would love to begin this year with an inspiring bouquet of resolutions. Previous lists seem stale, and I need a crisp new blueprint for the months ahead. My cats are no help, for they haven’t even learned to set short-term goals, much less plan for a brand-new year. I’m not sure why it’s so difficult. A feline To Do list would presumably be brief. “Resolved: go outside. Come back in, then out again. Ponder. Come back in. Meow, out, meow, in again. Eat, sleep. Repeat.” Perhaps they avoid resolutions for sound reasons. A University of Washington study found that 47 percent of the hundred million Americans who make New Year’s resolutions give up after only two months. This tally has grown to 80 percent in the past decade, according to University of Minnesota research. A University of Bristol study pegged the failure rate at 88 percent, which is immensely cheering, since apparently England is even lamer than we are. Resolution No. 1: Do not compare self to others. Set achievable goals. Do not Google percentages of things at beginning of year. Too depressing. Renowned theologian Jonathan Edwards, a New England Puritan, took resolution-writing to the level of an art form. He didn’t write his resolutions on a single day, but rather, during a two-year period when he was only nineteen, compiled over seventy resolutions which he committed to reviewing each week. One of his resolutions was Resolved,” never to speak evil of any, except if I have some particular good call for it.” I had absolutely no idea you were allowed to cover all your bases. Bless Mr. Edwards, this is going to be easier than expected. Resolutions 2, 3, and 4: Resolved, never again eat Talenti Double Chocolate Gelato, except I have some particular good call for it. Resolved, never miss a work deadline—or daily exercise or flossing or meditating—except I have some particular good call for it. Resolved, definitely take it easy on this whole Resolution thing. Two years working on a list is obsessive. Unlike the thoughtful Puritans, ancient Babylonians kept resolutionmaking simple, promising the gods at the start of each year to return borrowed objects and pay their debts. Romans made pledges to the god Janus, the two-faced god who looks backwards into the old year and forward into the new. Janus, for whom January is named, was also the patron and protector of arches, gates, doors, doorways, endings and beginnings. Resolutions 5 & 6: Fix front door, pay off Visa bill. If imagination falters, you can borrow resolutions from others, though of course if you are Babylonian you’ll have to return them again at the start of next year. A New Year’s Resolution Generator website lists such goals as, “Drink hot cocoa.” “Take a break.” “Eat a whole tomato like an apple.” “Start a pencil collection.” “Sing out of tune.” Definitely manageable, I would think. I might even earn extra credit since I instituted them before reading about them. Resolution 7: Lighten up. Other people apparently must commit to behaviors at which I already excel. The most popular resolutions, such as “eat healthy food,” “lose weight,” or “save money,” are statistically among the most likely to fail. Why not adopt new, improved resolutions from hipper folk? A list written for twentysomethings fairly sparkles with common sense. Young writer Jessie Rosen suggests resolving to stop blacking out if you still do it regularly, and pausing before Tweeting, Instagramming or updating one’s status to ask, “Is it absolutely necessary that I share this morsel of thought with my entire social network?” I would never have thought of these. Resolution 8: Get a social network. And get out more. The twentysomething list also suggests resolving to try foods you don’t like (though if you haven’t ever tried them, I wonder whether you’d know), and best of all, “Wait 30 seconds before you look up a fact you can’t remember on your phone, and try to remember it using your brain. This is what the olden days were like.” That’s not, actually, what the olden days were like. We usually just opened our mouths and opined, since facts weren’t in such wide use back then. But it’s a marvelous goal nevertheless. Resolution 9: Do not lose phone. Or mind. Contrary to the Western idea of unflinching resolve, the Taoist concept of Wu wei, action that does not involve excessive struggle, seems a better way to proceed than writing another impossible list. The founder of philosophical Taoism said that a ruler should govern a kingdom the same way one would cook a small fish. When frying a small fish, too much poking will ruin the meal. True devotees don’t need control or excessive effort, for trees grow without trying to grow, and planets revolve around the sun without thinking. Resolution 10: Don’t poke the fish. It’s cooking.

Blair Hahn is a polished partner. While paying for his teenage daughter’s pedicure, Blair treated his own toes to purple polish. “As my daughter grew up, how I related to her changed.” The partner with Richardson Patrick Westbrook & Brickman, LLC embraced the change and strolled down the beach to find that some people laughed and some “could not handle it.” So he started a series of children’s books—Purple Toes and Purple Kisses—to prove “it’s OK to be silly. Up a Creek

Fantastic and Flawless

the search is over! “It has always been a happy thought to me that the creek runs on all night, new every minute, whether I wish it or know it or care, as a closed book on a shelf continues to whisper to itself its own inexhaustible tale.” Annie Dillard, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek The air is chilly but the water is flat and glassy, like it’s tucked under a blanket on this clear winter morning, and so I borrow my daughter’s paddleboard, step onto liquid, and glide into Charleston’s harbor. I dig the blades into the water and paddle west, toward Shem Creek, but truthfully, my paddling is more zig and zag than anything. Certainly not the graceful, fluid line I see other paddleboarders executing. This board is too short for me, my husband says, which somehow explains my every-whicha-way paddling, though I can’t quite figure out why. Three strokes on the right zig me eastward, corrected by three zagging back to the left, with a net gain of maybe one stroke’s worth of semi-forward motion. Whoever said it’s more about the journey than the destination wasn’t precariously balanced and making miniscule headway on a paddleboard. Plus I’m rather fond of my destination this morning. Shem Creek is a narrow ribbon of water off of the wide harbor, midway between the jetties off Sullivan’s Island and the massive loading docks of Charleston’s busy port. It’s the kind of place you’d duck into if you were a kid playing hide and seek and the harbor was a wide open field. The kind of place you’d want to idle in if you were a shrimp boat exhausted from a 20-hour day trawling the ocean floor. This is a lowcountry tidal creek, not the gurgling, tumbling, rollicking, coldwater creek dressed in moss-covered boulders that you find in the mountains or foothills. Shem Creek is broad and mellow and no-frills, wearing only simple marsh grass that subtly shifts from emerald to auburn for a seasonal wardrobe change. She is salty and wise—the non-judgmental housemother with an open door policy to whoever and whatever shows up. Which is a good thing, since Shem Creek has evolved over the years from a bustling shrimping lane, once home to 70 trawlers with big nets in pigtails and an industrial icehouse (before the onslaught of farm-raised imported shrimp) into an all-comers tourist attraction. The former icehouse is now a neon-lighted outdoor bar, where sunburned boaters pull up for a tall one after a day on the water. Five or six seafood restaurants line the waterway, an inn offers rooms with a view, and an elevated boardwalk—a town park—meanders over the marsh along one side of the creek. A low bridge carrying four lanes of cars divides the creek, separating the commercial side from the residential, where private docks extend from quiet backyards. And then there’s me, a middle-aged woman on a kid-sized paddleboard, along with other kayakers and paddlers, slowly making our way past all the action. I love this view of the waterway from the water. Being on it, gliding over and through it, powered only by silent paddle strokes (however inefficient) and a quad-clinching prayer for balance, transforms my experience of Shem Creek, this place I’ve passed by numerous times a day for two decades—some 28,000 crossings of the Shem Creek bridge—and so have come to take for granted. Shem Creek is a threshold, a place I cross over as I venture from my neighborhood on small excursions into the wider world. It is a vase for dolphins who love showing off for the boaters and partiers at the bars and restaurants, and especially love the scraps tossed off the fishing and shrimp boats. They roll and arch their pearly gray backs, puffing out big Ujjayi breaths, yogis with fins. It’s a playground for pelicans with their gawky beaks and prehistoric wings. The creek is a canvas for sunrise, the morning’s still water capturing dawn’s yawning colors as they spill over the horizon. At the close of day, it is a cup that collects the last dribble of sunset, and offers it—here, sip this, a cocktail of all that has been and will be. All of this I appreciate more deeply as I zig and zag along Shem Creek, a paddleboarding ferrywoman to wonder. I pass the ragged trawler, Winds of Fortune, with her hopeful nets and tangled lines, and pray that tomorrow’s winds of fortune may blow stronger for all of us who harbor near this creek—the herons and seagulls, the tourists and trawlers, the paddlers and dolphins and neighbors in houses with long docks. Unlike a mountain stream or Annie Dillard’s Tinker Creek that dances continuously, Shem Creek doesn’t feel “new every minute” as much as it feels old and encumbered, like the tree in Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. We ask so much of her: entertain us, harbor us, feed us, soothe us. The least we can do is give her our attention. Notice how her tides change almost imperceptibly, a gradual rise then a quiet slinking out. How her mood shifts with the weather. She is constantly new, as are we. Candice Shaw cheerleads other young women’s potential. With a job at Charleston Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, an internship with The Modern Connection, and a concentration in communication studies at the College of Charleston, Candice has “professional” written in her palm lines. She took a chance meeting with the president of FemCity Charleston, a local networking group, and turned it into yet another internship and an inspiration to initiate a Femfessionals program at the college level this past October. “A woman knows exactly how it is for another woman in business.” But when it comes to networking, many female students are intimidated. Enter, the fire behind Femfessionals: “I’m going to help women be successful in this world.” With her passion for PR, social media and meeting new faces, Candice is ready to relate with her peers and facilitate their connections.

Shelby Craig has her sights on the future. Despite her blindness, Shelby still spends summers at space camp, reads books, and bikes. The Wando High School junior recently switched from an adult tricycle to a tandem bike with a pilot to spin through races around the Lowcountry, including a recent James Island Connector Run to benefit the Gavalas-Kolanko Foundation. Through the nonprofit, she supports those with physical disabilities, their college dreams and their intended career paths. Her own path includes college and a career teaching Braille or music, or pursuing musical therapy. “When I was riding the bike I felt free and independent, like I could conquer the world.” In the meantime, Shelby’s conquering local classrooms with a self-designed reading and literacy program to promote reading and inspire children, both sighted and blind, to read. And when she’s not biking bridges, she considers any challenges “mountains to climb or doors to go through.”

Salome Seraphin is all about educational access. When it comes to sex in this city, the recent College of Charleston grad takes comedy out of the conversation and infuses information. Salome speaks to youth as an advocate with the South Carolina Contraceptive Access Campaign, as well as working with SiHLE (Sistering, Informing, Healing, Living, and Empowering) for African-American adolescent girls. The topic? Where to locate affordable sexual and reproductive health services and how to approach HIV prevention. Though she never knows how she’ll be received when she walks through a door, Salome is determined to nix the negative connotations of contraception. “If you get information, it can really empower you.” When it comes to birth control, she wants the youth she speaks with to know what it is, what it does to their bodies and how they would benefit from it. “You have a choice to get on it or not get on it. Either way, there needs to be somebody or a place that you can go when you don’t know these answers.”

Hopefully Boston—my mother said—seemed festive. Appropriate. Necessary. Jen Wittes

My mother, my two children, and I visited Boston for a few days, the winter after my spring divorce. A bit lost, naturally, still dusting off excess debris and disappointment, and living in my ex’s home state of Minnesota, I struggled with holiday plans. The season loomed with uncertainty as I set out to make new memories with my kids, while still figuring out how to untangle, process, and preserve the old ones. Boston—my mother said—seemed festive. Appropriate. Necessary. A native Californian, Boston was my one and only choice after high school graduation. I swore I would go to any Massachusetts school that would take me. I would live in a closet if need be. I would work in the most rat-infested restaurant in the Northeast. As it turns out, at one point or another, I did all three. The city remains the one and only place I’ve chosen to live. I lived there not out of resignation or compromise, not because I was born there or was forced to relocate for work. Not even because I placed my finger on a wildly spinning globe. I lived in Boston because I wanted to, as much as I’ve ever wanted anything. It was also the last place I lived before becoming a wife. Over the course of my eight-year marriage I had been back to Boston once or twice, but this winter trip was infinitely different. Barely visible under the cobblestone and concrete, past the old reflection pool and down musty, vandalized back alleys, I could still see it: the other path. Me, if I hadn’t left grad school. Me, if I hadn’t married so young, so fast. Me, if I hadn’t married—apparently—the wrong person. As quickly and easily as I thought these things, I involuntarily squeezed my eyes shut and held tighter those small hands—hers in my left and his in my right— that lead, like warm nerves, to my fearful and patched up heart. See, to call it all a mistake or to think too much about what might have been, would be to erase exactly the right children. Instead of thinking of the one path or the one thousand that I didn’t take, I shared with my kids a bit of the view from a few miles back—before that sharp right turn found me living in the shadow of a Sicilian volcano, where I would learn to cook and I would conceive my daughter. I showed my kids the old building on Beacon Street where I shared my first short story. It was called “Hopefully” I told them, and yes, I was very nervous. I walked them under the icy, leafless canopy of my all-time favorite tree. I explained that in the fall the foliage turned the color of fresh lemons, and everything in the shade—backpacks, books, a friend’s face—reflected a deep, sunrise yellow. If I dutifully ignored the unexplored path which led so boldly away from motherhood, I did manage to check in with who I was when I left that day; the day I decided that running off to Italy to marry a military man was more important than my MFA, more important than Boston. I scanned park benches and storefronts, hoping to recognize the exact spot where I made that choice—the one that I could, in hindsight, easily call foolish. Though I wouldn’t dare.

As I wandered my city, which seemed nearly 10 years later like a small town, I felt certain that I would come across the spot where I faced the proverbial last chance to change. Without a doubt, there would be some sort of reset button hidden under the buckling brick or Paul Revere’s grave which would allow me to go back and decide—knowing what I know now—if I would do it all over again. The divorce is by far the most painful, endurance-testing, endlessly complicated event of my lifetime. And yet, I realize that if you set fire to the red thread, the whole tapestry disintegrates. Of course I would do it all over again. I would have to, or I wouldn’t be me—battle-worn and sometimes bitter, but ultimately still open to love: more of it, all of it. Only now, wiser. I learned to love by trying. Evidently it wasn’t meant to be forever with either my ex-husband or my city, but my life story includes adventures with both. I walked my kids around the perimeter of the Frog Pond at Boston Common, the place ridiculously cheerful and heaping with ice skaters. We were blocks away from my old alma mater, which I never miss an opportunity to announce is also Fonzie’s. There, in the glow of my old stomping ground (and Henry Winkler’s), I felt myself settle into acceptance of the path I’d chosen. At the same time, I wanted to grab every college girl by the back of her hooded sweatshirt or ever so gently by the sprouty loose ends of her meticulously messy bun. Aunty Jen has a thing or two to say. I wanted to tell them to go on real dates—to the optimistic Frog Pond, damn it; and to relish the hours spent writing in their velvet diaries upon return, happily kissed. True free time and self-indulgence only exist in your twenties, and tomorrow is closer than you think! I wanted to tell them that they will become writers and actors and producers—if they really want to—but that it might take a while. This priceless knowledge of hindsight is of course wasted on the youth. No matter. Mostly, I wanted to tell them—and also myself, my daughter, my son, and you—that I’m still here. I touch old trees and shuffle through graveyards. I write. I cry. I hug my kids. I am still the same girl who chose Boston and then chose to leave. I laugh at my own jokes; I brag about The Fonz; I romanticize America’s first subway. If knowledge and wisdom are reserved for the middle-aged—hey— I have half a lifetime left in which to tell sleepwalking college girls what to do. The path, however painful, winds beneath the most beautiful stars, and I can walk for miles.

Jen Wittes’ first short story, which shares the same title as this essay, is so horrendously bad, she has sworn to forever keep the one hard copy under lock and key; however, it was a start. Hopefully, her years of hard work and steady improvement will eventually score her an autographed pic of Henry Winkler. 058 januaryw2013
