July is a month of primary colors, summer on simmer and Miami vice on the rocks. July unfolds like the new leaves of a banana tree after a tropical shower, lush and hopeful. July is faded pink stucco covered in
fuchsia bougainvillea. July is swimming pool blue, salsa verde, watermelon red. July smells like Coppertone, mint muddled in a mojito and the sunlight stored in a tomato. July’s theme song is played by ice-cream trucks and squeaky ceiling fans and a chorus of slamming screen doors all across the country. July
is grasshopper green leaping out of a field of weeds and wildflowers and the sound of cicadas on a long, hot, sleepy afternoon. July is as sticky and sweet as peach juice between your fingers, as spicy and succulent as slow-cooked ribs, as unforgettable and fleeting as the fireworks finale on the Fourth of July. Joe and Nancy do.
Over 25 years ago, Joe and Nancy traded the Washington, D.C., beltway for Charleston’s Intracoastal Waterway. “After spending years on Sullivan’s Island in rented beach cottages, surfing, fishing and playing, we were nudged by Joe’s older brother to, if not grow up, then at least buy a house!” says Nancy. Joe & Nancy Bagnulo Builders FirstSource bldr.com Litton Entertainment litton.tv
Not wanting to get too far from the surf spots, they looked inward to Mount Pleasant for a home of their own. “With the help of Lorcan and his crew, we were pre-approved for a mortgage and found the little bungalow that has made out dreams come true.” Today Joe works at Builders FirstSource, a supplier of building products, and Nancy works with Litton Entertainment, an entertainment production, distribution and marketing company with three Daytime Emmy nominations under their belt. And Nancy thinks Lorcan deserves a special statuette too: “Lucey Mortgage was fabulous and attentive. They answered all of our questions and even helped us find a real estate agent that Lorcan thought we would like. They were also non-judgmental about the fact that we were looking at starter homes in our fifties!”

FROM THE PUBLISHER
The Independence Issue While there is currently a legislative war on women being waged in the U.S., in 1917, a more literal battle was being fought against women. In June of that year, suffragists staged the first-ever picketing of the White House—silently holding signs demanding the right to vote for women. In the beginning, a few protestors were arrested for obstructing traffic and released a few days later, but as the picketing and arrests continued, the treatment meted out by their jailers became ever harsher. On October 20, for instance, Alice Paul, one of the leading figures in the women’s movement, was arrested and sentenced to seven months in the District of Columbia jail. Held in solitary confinement and denied legal counsel, Paul was repeatedly force fed raw eggs through a tube down her nose, a painful procedure that can cause illness and death. The arrests escalated and culminated in the “Night of Terror” on November 15, 1917 at Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia where the suffragists were held in miserable conditions. Forty guards, under orders from the warden to teach the jailed women a lesson, went on a rampage and beat, kicked, dragged, choked, threatened and brutalized 33 of them. The resulting negative publicity forced the release of the suffragists, and in 1920 their efforts resulted in the passage of the 19th Amendment, finally giving women the right to vote. When I consider what these independent spirits achieved, I often wonder if I would have been as brave had I been in their place. Would I have stood up and been counted in such a hostile atmosphere? This November, when we go to the polls and maybe complain about standing too long in line to cast our votes, I hope we will remember the women who fought for that right on a long, lonely November night 95 years ago and send them a silent thank-you.

to jokingly agree to be the vice-vice-chair of the College of Charleston Women’s and Gender Studies Community Advisory Board during our last term. Yes, if two people had come down with the flu, I might’ve had to lead a meeting. Even if I don’t make it to a ballot, I’ll never stop confronting those statistics—counting bylines on Sunday’s New York Times Business section, counting chromosomes at our local Pecha Kuchas and questioning casting decisions in commercials. Look around and ask, “Where are the women?” You’ll see the world differently. Thankfully, Charleston has three Indie Women looking out for us: Lillian, a civil rights hero who rocks the vote, Jenna, one of eleven who encourages campers to be real and make noise when our culture might tell them otherwise, and Charlotte, an artist who tells women’s stories using all the elements. This July, salute the women who liberated you—every day is our Independence Day.

Boy, was she sweet.
Stephanie Hunt
36 julyw2007 www.skirtmag.com
Top Down
There was no test drive, no shopping around, no cryptic Craigslist postings to cull through. It just arrived—a Granny Apple-green 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, convertible and all. Boy, was she sweet. My older sister had turned 16 in July of 1977, and my mother worked full-time so, arguably, we needed a second car to manage transport to afterschool activities, youth group meetings, babysitting gigs and our hopeful trips to the new mall. I don’t recall that there was any discussion about getting new wheels—we knew money was tight and I guess I figured it was wishful thinking. I’d be content to bum rides with our friends who were driving cars I can’t believe we ever thought were cool—automotive travesties like the Vega, Smokey and the Bandit-inspired Trans Am and, God forbid, the AMC Pacer. Then after Christmas of that year, as I recall, it just appeared. My father thought maybe my sisters and I would pile into it and be able to visit him more frequently in his new home seven hours away on the coast in South Carolina, so he called his college pal and car dealer, David Brown, and finagled a deal on a used Cutlass. The car would be for all of us, me and my two sisters, although it would be two more years before I could drive it, and six more before my younger sister could, legally at least—but she didn’t let that stop her. My mother didn’t want to get stuck with the gas bill, so she negotiated a Gulf credit card out of my dad for us to use, sparingly, at Newton’s Gulf Station, where they filled you up, checked oil and washed the windshield with fast, friendly, streakless efficiency. The good ol’ days. The Cutlass was one smooth, dreamy machine—“Supreme” indeed. It wasn’t a car; it was a statement. Besides being the unfortunate and unsubtle color of puke green—a hue straight from the crazed palette of a Pee Wee’s Playhouse set designer—its sexy curves, substantial chrome and deep, springy seats covered in come-hither white vinyl that stuck to your thighs in summer’s heat were classic. It had round everything: big round smooth-turning steering wheel, big round dashboard dials, gently rounded window cranks, even rounded edges on the rear-view mirror. As the world was tipping toward angular and mod in the late seventies, the Wood girls were road-tripping back to a softer realm. And when we pressed the convertible unleashing button and waited as the dirty canvas top lurched up and folded down in fits and jerks, like an old arthritic woman clunkily settling into a chair, the Cutlass transformed into a whole other car. With the wind tunneling through our permed hair, we were classic. Nothing said “Hello freedom!” like being a teenager with the top down and the world yawning open. I was empowered behind that wheel, loving the feel of the road, the graceful heft of that wide body gliding around curves and over bumps, its shock absorbers loose and bouncy. I’ve never driven a car since that had a better feel—strong yet ample, relaxed and fluid, not tight and tense like a sports car. The Cutlass is counted in the vintage “Muscle Car” category these days because of its big engine, but to me it was utterly feminine. Sensuous, responsive, dutiful and daringly risque when topless. I think I also loved it because it was tangible proof that my dad hadn’t totally abandoned us, that despite his tardy child-support checks and infrequent visits, he would still provide. My wallet carried only a driver’s license and a gas card with his name in raised letters—forms of identity that said who I was and that somehow I’d get where I needed to go. Our Cutlass ended up being the quintessential hand-me-down, with my sisters and me taking turns as primary driver when the older of us would head off to college and hand over the keys. My younger sister got the most mileage out of it, having the car all to herself for four years, nicknaming it “The Booger,” after I went to school. Of course she also had to deal with our residual wear and tear and loves telling mortifying stories of careening through intersections after the brakes had gone out while she was carpooling three unseatbelted kids to school. And like most hand-me-downs, that wellused car eventually ended up in the discard pile. At some point, with about the same slim research and effort that went into buying it, my mom sold it for maybe 400 bucks after my youngest sister went to college. Today, a 1971 Cutlass Convertible fetches 21 grand. And today I get a similarly small ROI on any sense of pleasure derived from driving compared to what I experienced in that Cutlass convertible. Maybe it’s because our minivan and Prius are totally utilitarian and decidedly unsexy, or maybe it’s that being behind the wheel as a middle-aged mom feels more like being trapped than being free. But occasionally I see one of those classic Olds beauties driving by, and I can remember the breezy joy of holding my tanned arms up with the top down, the rush of speed and wind and wide open sky. MY CHARLESTON JULY
.
July. Growing up, I spent my summers at a cozy beach cottage in North Carolina with my entire family. Our time at the beach house was filled with long, lazy days, morning walks on the beach, beautiful, simple meals at night, and so much togetherness. The beach house was summer to me—until moving to Charleston. I thought the feeling I had there couldn’t be matched anywhere else: fireflies at dusk, sandy toes, salty hair, and the deepest sleep I’ve ever known. Slowly but surely, I started to feel these summer feelings in Charleston too—on a bike ride along the Battery at sunset, swinging on a bench at Waterfront Park. Seeing constant tourists doesn’t annoy me, in fact it’s a great reminder that the place I get to live year-round is that summer haven for so many others.
Blake and his dream car, South of Broad.
Summer vines crawling up a perfectly pink wall. Farmer's market sunflowers, a picture of happiness.
My friend’s pup Tutti, wanting to join in on brunch.
Long walks South of Broad, mornings at the farmers market, and brunches on the porch (with huevos rancheros) are key ingredients for a summer well-spent.
Paper lanterns are a cheap and easy way to liven up an outdoor space. 38 julyw2012

Portobello mushroom eyes at brunch.
Sunday at the Battery with my little sister and boyfriend.
A full table during a brunch feast I hosted with some friends.
Juice Season. Summer is the season for juicing. When the temperature is already in the nineties upon waking, a refreshing juice is an ideal start to the day. Just when you think you’re sick of juice, you come up with a new stellar combination: Watermelon and lime, apple and mint, and orange and ginger are all staples around my house. And of course with a little bit of gin or vodka (or tequila with strawberry lime!), juicing can add some antioxidants to your summer cocktail.
this month I love
1. Playing tourist. 2. Aimless walks South of Broad. 3. Family visits. 4. Brunch feasts at home. 5. Weekend getaways. 6. Sweet potato and black bean soup. 7. Xiao Bao Biscuit pop-up dinners. 8. Infinity pools. 9. Sand dunes. 10. Snap dragons and baby’s breath.
July is the most carefree month. It’s the time when everything seems to slow down and for a moment, it’s just about the little things: fireflies, family barbecues and days spent swimming until pruney. Watermelon, Granny Smiths, and carrots ready to be juiced.
Buying local carrots from the farmer’s market makes a huge difference in taste.
Orange, carrot, and ginger juice is my favorite in the morning.
Melon coolers are a great afternoon pick-me-up.

Aaron Vitali has a pour for you. East of the Cooper, Aaron is making sure your glass is half-full. While working at Red Drum, he fell for fine wines under the guidance of Charlie Chance. “He was my wine mentor—ironic because I now sell wine to him!” For three years now, he’s been with Southern Wine and Spirits, working the Isle of Palms, Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island and Sullivan’s Island. “I love the job because I get to meet and build relationships with all types of people.” From introducing restaurateurs to new flavors and hosting in-store tastings at places like Everyday Gourmet, Aaron keeps spirits high. When he’s not talking tannins and discussing depth, Aaron hits the water. “In my spare time I kitesurf, surf, and support the Coastal Conservation League and the Surfrider Foundation.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “I finally get a chance to showcase my legs.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “I like reading skirt! because I like knowing what is appealing to the opposite sex. ” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach

SKIRT! IN THE KITCHEN JULY
Margaret Medlock Edwards
Café Fork & Fork Fine Gourmet Catering & Events 2408 Ashley River Rd., Pierpont Crossing 769.0300, cafefork.com
What is the best compliment a customer ever paid you?
“We’ll see you again How do you unwind after a long day? Playing with our basset hound, Violet, and reading.
Shoes I wear in the kitchen:
tomorrow!”
Favorite foodie: Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa. She makes it all look so easy!
Must-try appetizer: Our she crab soup. Folks swear it’s the best they’ve ever tasted.
Best dessert? My childhood favorite, Coca-Cola Cake.
Ruby slippers? No. Dansko? I trip in them. So I’d have to say Merrell.
What’s your motto? Feed the eye first, then the stomach.
5 favorite ingredients: Favorite cookbook: Potluck at Midnight Farm. On vacation a while back in Martha’s Vineyard, we wandered into a store named Midnight Farm, owned by the cookbook’s author, Tamara Weiss, and her friend Carly Simon. Opening the book is like being welcomed into an old friend’s home. It’s warm and cozy and full of stories and basic down-to-earth recipes.
Eye-popping lunch: Café Fork Burger
Appetizer with a little kick: Buffalo Shrimp.
My recipe for running a great kitchen: • Customers • Nurturing creativity • Organization • Collaboration • Have fun What is it like to cook with your husband in the kitchen? We’ve developed a rhythm after 24 years together, although Wendall is the one who likes to create and experiment, while I’m more of a recipe kind of gal. I’m learning, though! Who does the cooking at home? Wendall 50%, me 20%, takeout 30%.
Our most popular lunch sandwich: Sugar Magnolia Chicken Salad Sandwich
Your favorite lunch dish to prepare: Tuna Nicoise or Teriyaki Salmon
Newest item for summer catering? Caribbean Fish Tacos with Corn on the Cob.
What is the success secret? Love what you do, do what you love. And eat, eat, eat!
What is Wendall’s favorite dish? My mom Bettye’s meatloaf.
First three would have to be crunchy peanut butter, Saltines, and marshmallows (with these you can make a quick “dessert”—spread peanut butter on the cracker, plop a marshmallow on top, then pop in the oven ‘til the marshmallow gets brown!) Other two would be something to wash that down with: sweet tea and Coca-Colas in the green bottle.
Must-have local ingredient:
Squash blossoms from Kennerty Farms on Wadmalaw. I knew they’d be wonderful. When we serve these jewels stuffed with our homemade pimento cheese at events, people marvel at them.
Best prepared hors d’oeuvre to pick up for small cockail party:
Crispy Asparagus Straws—phyllo with parmesan, prosciutto, and a fresh asparagus spear. Served hot, these will make you want to slap somebody.

Look Who ’s Tal ki n g When it comes to media coverage of women’s issues such as abortion, birth control and Planned Parenthood, men are still doing most of the talking, a new study by The 4th Estate has found. Men are quoted around five times more often than women in these stories, according to the research group which has been studying election coverage for the past six months. Among 35 major national print publications, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, men had 81 percent of the quotes in stories about abortion, while women had 12 percent, and organizations 7 percent. In stories about birth control, men had 75 percent of the quotes, with women getting 19 percent and organizations getting 6 percent. Stories about Planned Parenthood showed similar numbers, with men getting 67 percent, women getting 26 percent and organizations getting 7 percent.

In the water, I’m inspired by my granddaughters’ passion and tenacity. They are ever new to me. In my work as a physician, I meet the health needs of women in the exact moment they’re in - and like being in the waves with my girls, every day brings a new challenge - and inspiration.

Jumping Ship
a n i l i W z ax a r B & spa by Claudia
I couldn’t have imagined a more hospitable place to learn to sail than the bay alongside Huatulco, Mexico. The breeze was light and steady under an azure canopy of sky, and the calm waters weren’t crowded. Marcus, a nerdy, skinny guy in carrot-colored trunks whom I’d met on the beach in front of the resort had taught me to snorkel a day ago. Now, despite my reluctance, we were on to bigger adventures. I did feel I could trust my newly-acquired, very capable sailing mentor. We were about the same age, and I liked how gentle and funny he’d been while waiting for me to get the hang of fins and mask, an enterprise that took far longer than we’d thought. Emboldened by his success, he had major aquatic goals in mind for me—sailing, windsurfing, maybe even waterskiing. The resort kept a few small sailboats to lend to its guests. After listening to a rapid-fire, barely intelligible sermon on water safety delivered by a bored French staff member who, we felt, might have vaguely preferred to see us drown, we donned life jackets and untied the small craft from the dock. Marcus steered us out onto the open water, explaining the mysteries of navigation: the boom and the rudder, aft, bow, port, starboard. I listened as best I could as he explained tacking and jibing, but the primrose depths of the waves were mesmerizing. The cool fingers of wind on my face were thrilling after the mid-day heat of the beach. If the boat hadn’t sunk, I suppose Marcus and I would have said later that it had been a perfect afternoon. We were only half an hour out. Having taught me the basics of mast and tiller, Marcus occupied himself with trimming the sail, so I sat back and watched the gulls dip and spiral and plunge into the waves before us. I opened, then dropped, one of the water bottles we’d brought with us. Retrieving it, I noticed that the bottom of the boat seemed to be covered in water. It did look more full than the occasional splashes of waves washing over the side would account for; though embarrassed that he’d think me alarmist, I called out to him. “Nothing to worry about,” he called back, but he left what he was doing anyway and came over to where I sat. His eyes widened, and he swore like a seasoned sailor. Then he moved us into action. “We have to start bailing! NOW!” he yelled to me over the wind, tossing me a bucket. I did my best to heave the water back into the bay where it belonged. The wind was growing stronger than before, and he dashed to tack the boat while I ducked and continued tossing water over the side as fast as I could. It was no use. The boat was filling fast—even to a novice like myself, it was evident that we were not miraculously going to stay afloat. So we made sure our life jackets were fastened securely and jumped over the side. We would have to tow the boat back to the resort on a rope. Maybe it was the rush of adrenaline, maybe it was the sudden freedom from all that effort—but Marcus and I began laughing so hard it was difficult to keep swimming without inhaling water. I couldn’t remember ever feeling so safe or having so much fun on a trip. When we neared the dock, two resort staffers, one of them the bored Frenchman who’d given us the boat, were standing there seemingly enraged, which sent us both into a fresh bout of hysterics. I knew how ridiculous, how inexperienced we must have looked—two orange blobs paddling furiously back to shore, trailing a sailboat tipped over on its side behind us. The staffers watched silently while we tied the boat up and extended no offer to help. It took Marcus almost an hour to convince them that we hadn’t done anything wrong, and he only succeeded by pointing out where the hull was cracked and leaking. They never apologized, of course, for giving us a defective boat or for putting us in danger. Over Mai Tais at the poolside bar that night, we had a wonderful time imagining just how they’d secretly try to dispose of us if we decided to try skindiving, say, or the much-touted Sunset Dinner Cruise. “Eet was very sad, ze Americans jus’ fell overboard after the cheese course, and sharks ate zem up, piff-poof,” said Marcus. “Quel dommage!” “We’d better mail our postcards out tonight, just for safety’s sake,” I told him. “Even these drinks might be spiked with a little something.” I’m not a sailor to this day, and swimming is still about the only water activity I’ve mastered, despite Marcus’ long-ago hopes for me. I read books by women about their exciting experiences sailing the high seas alone, or kayaking on the Boh River in Borneo. I’m excellent at memoir-reading, it turns out. Cookbooks, too, though I don’t have time to cook. Author Annie Dillard wrote, “...there are all kinds of ways to live. You can take your choice. You can keep a tidy house, and when St. Peter asks you what you did with your life, you can say, I kept a tidy house, I made my own cheese balls.” I’ve thought about Marcus a lot since that afternoon in Mexico—the perfect plan we made, the perfect weather, and then the way jumping ship turned out to be so exhilarating. Maybe there’s something immeasurable to be gained from doing certain things really badly, or having them go wrong. Just about anyone can teach you to sail, but learning to fail is so much more important.

Charlotte Savage | Putting Girls on Film Charlotte’s passion for fashion fanned the flames of filmmaking. While attending the Fashion Institute for merchandising, she discovered fashion films and transferred to the Savannah College of Art and Design to pursue the silver screen. “I love that film is the only art form that incorporates all of the arts. Fashion designers, photographers, visual artists, makeup artists, graphic designers, writers... There is so much talent that can be combined to create an amazing film.” Her submission to the Charleston International Film Fest, The Dust That Floats Behind the Sky, about friends who develop drug addictions, won the Audience Choice award—“That was so surreal!” says Charlotte. And now she’s turned her lens to another dark topic, her currently-in-production film, Nothing, is a drama about a young girl who lacks affection at home and turns to her high school teacher. “Most of my projects are for fun, but it’s not just about fun for me—it’s passion. ”

Jenna Lyles | Righteous Rocker Last January, Jenna and friends co-founded Girls Rock Charleston, a week-long music-making camp for girls and trans youth, graciously hosted by empowerment-minded Ashley Hall. “We all had varying reasons for starting the group—but the one thing all of us have in common is that we grew up in the South and we feel like we have been given so much by this place, but also know intimately the specific struggles of growing up here as a girl or as a queer kid. We wanted to make change where we knew we had the most knowledge.” This year attendance has doubled, but the week is still jam-packed: Campers create a band, write a song and perform at the Music Farm as well as attend an array of workshops on topics like women’s herstory in music, self-defense, and song writing. “We spend a lot of time just countering [society’s] messages; letting our campers know that we value them because of their creativity, integrity, heart, and the way they treat other people.” Photo by Alice Keeney

Lillian McNeill | Living History A lifelong resident of Charleston, Lillian has had a hand in history and has more than a few tales to tell. But it’s her influence on the voting habits of African Americans that has garnered her accolades. In the early sixties, Lillian would visit her neighbors around Hanover Street and persuade them to vote, even helping them pass literacy tests: “When you first opened the book you had to read a section of the Constitution. And I helped them memorize certain amendments. You know, just in case they asked you to read something.” When St. Julian Devine was elected to city council in 1967, the first elected at-large African-American politician since Reconstruction, he summoned Lillian. “He had a store on America Street. And he said, ‘Do you want to make some extra money? Go out and make more people register to vote.’ And I did!” Today Lillian lives and works at Ansonborough House, and yes, she still votes. “…see if something a bit more interesting catches your eye.”
H
Jen Wittes
ilda lived in a mid-sized apartment on the Upper East Side—a neighborhood designation that is still lost on me, although I’m well aware that it means quite a lot to real estate agents. Like many native New Yorkers who found themselves in a fortunate location either via rent control, legacy or a favorable tide of change, Hilda was anything but fancy. Practical, humble. Beaded jewelry and simple lipstick. Sleeveless polyester and pants, always pants. Of course, this is only how I remember her. Pictures of her earlier years show the subtlest hints of glamour—a fancy shoe, a flamboyant hat, a beautiful bag. Always a whisper rather than a bang. When I was a little girl, Hilda made me several sets of elaborate paper dolls. If Hilda was anything but, the ladies that she drew for me were above and beyond. Fancy for certain—in oil pastel, watercolor and thick charcoal black. It seems to me now that I didn’t really comprehend—although I must have known—that Hilda had been a highly successful fashion illustrator, most notably for Vogue. Before photography, before the slimming and smoothing deception of Photoshop, pattern and perfection were shaped by pencil and pen. By my Great Aunt Hilda. As I grew older, I loved my summer visits to Hilda’s. There was no worry about bedtime, no agenda for an early morning. Hilda just let me be as I sat up late with the guest room window wide open—chewing on humidity and breathing in the sweet smell of brick, exhaust, and scarce but optimistic flower boxes brimming with begonias. In the morning I would make myself a bagel and orange juice and sit barefoot and bleary-eyed at Hilda’s old drafting table, furiously writing in my journal and experimenting with her vast collection of semi-retired colored pencils and pens. She never hovered over me or asked me what I was working on. Still, I felt a sort of unspoken validation of my creative expression. When I was 17, Hilda started taking me to museums, letting me browse and wander, frown or roll my eyes, stop when something moved me to look closer. In the afternoon, when she’d tire, she’d shoo me out into the street and practically demand that I spend some quality one-on-one time with her city. No matter that it was the city, the world’s city, the big one. No matter that I was young or timid or unfamiliar with the subway system. To her I was (as I am in my own mind now) a born city girl, one who draws inspiration from crowded pavement rather than tall pine trees or crashing waves. As I walked, stumbling self-consciousness quickly gave way to a long, haughty, arm-swinging stride—smiling at nothing but the jagged skyscraper horizon, as if it was draped around my shoulders like a boyfriend’s jacket. Shop windows, park benches, street vendors, the stray eccentric. Good old honking horns. New York as a postcard of itself stamped with freedom before legal adulthood.
I’d come back to Hilda, so proud that I’d found my own way, sweaty palms clutching a large shopping bag that contained not one, but two boxes of Converse sneakers. “Those are cute,” she’d say, “but tomorrow we’ll send you to Greenwich Village with your cousin…see if something a bit more interesting catches your eye.” From Hilda, this was a promise, not an insult. She accepted who I was, but also wanted to offer more—take it or leave it. Sure enough, I scooped up several treasures in the Village: clunky rings, beaded boxes, a cheap orange ribbed bodysuit. Quasi-one-of-a-kind purchases made with my own money and misguided sense of style. Hilda was satisfied. That seventeenth summer, Hilda and I watched the Democratic National Convention on TV. It was right in town at Madison Square Garden. Hilda made me ice cream and told me what she knew about Barbara Jordan, and then, Bill Clinton. She liked him, I remember. Said he was kind of fun. Said his wife seemed like something special too. A few months later, I signed up to work for the Clinton campaign in my small California hometown. This decision wasn’t prompted by Hilda’s suggestion, but was born in the moment she said, “Listen to him, Jen.” And I did. She didn’t tell me what to hear; she trusted me to make up my own mind, to become a liberal—or not. Care about politics, or not. Stay up all night wishing that someday I might have a perpetual taxicab lullaby and a bedroom the size of a postage stamp, or go to sleep and dream instead of Bali, Paris, a small Sicilian fishing town, or the Amazon. Now, I try to make sense of my relationship with Hilda and what I keep coming back to is the idea of taking a small child to Europe. Is the Eiffel Tower lost on an eight-year-old boy? Does a toddler know the difference between gelato in Rome and Coldstone Creamery? Maybe they don’t, but maybe they will— someday—appreciate that they’ve been. If alive, Hilda would laugh to see me compare her to the Eiffel Tower, but they are both icons in my mind. Here was a woman who graduated from Pratt and went on to become a true breadwinner in her family, in the midst of the Great Depression. She had her first child at 45, in the 1950s. So-called advanced maternal age was unheard of at the time and her decision to become a mother in her forties was nothing short of revolutionary. From there, she balanced parenthood and career, sketching her way into fashion history. On the night we watched Clinton accept the nomination, she was about 78—still following politics; still so connected, aware and relevant. All of this was mostly lost on me at 17. I like to think that if I could do it again I would pick her brain endlessly; I would thank her for the paper dolls and the permission to be, create and breathe. But thinking like that is merely wasting time. The beauty of our short visits was in not knowing, not over-analyzing. It was an open door, a nod, a vague suggestion. It was my new voice in the adult world and an unaccompanied walk down Madison Avenue in search of sneakers—and then—something a bit more interesting.
Jen Wittes works as a freelance writer, editor, postpartum doula, and mother of two and counts Hilda as an inspiration for a richly textured life as a woman. You can find Hilda’s work at thewhitecabinet.com, the brainchild of Jen’s cousin and Hilda’s daughter, Liz. 68 julyw2007 www.skirtmag.com

$431,360 The Ongoing War on Women Last month, South Carolina Senators Lindsey Graham and Jim DeMint voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act that would have ensured women are paid the same amount as their male counterparts. We have to conclude that they don’t care if you only make 77 cents to their dollar, they don’t think your employer has an obligation to show that pay inequities are not based on your gender, they don’t believe you have a right to know the salaries of co-workers doing the same job and they don’t want you to have increased protections from retaliation if you share salary information. Think about how much you could use that extra $431,360 the next time you go to the grocery store or the voting booth—it’s the average woman’s earnings gap in a lifetime.

“Do you understand that if you do not leave immediately, you will be arrested?”
I
Ann K. Howley
made it all the way through high school and college without drinking, smoking or partying, but by the time I graduated from college, I was overdue for a big, fat, beautiful rebellion. It’s not that I woke up one morning and decided to defy my strict, conservative parents. Like any true-blooded American kid, I was convinced my parents were old-fashioned, ignorant, narrow-minded and wrong. Consciously or not, I became an anti-nuclear demonstrator to prove it. I attended a few demonstrations in Los Angeles, held signs, recited old Sixties anti-war chants and passed out those iconic bumper stickers that said “One nuclear bomb can ruin your whole day.” In 1984, I attended a planning meeting for a non-violent “die-in” at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, where protesters would simultaneously lie down on the ground and pretend to be dead to simulate what would happen in the event of a real nuclear attack. “Will you join me?” the protest leader, a local politician, solemnly asked. My hand shot up like a sixth grader in Social Studies class. And that’s how I committed myself to go to jail. Part of me thought it was going to be sort of like riding the Space Mountain roller coaster at Disneyland—a little dangerous and scary around the turns, but exhilarating and satisfying in the end. I was 23. Pent-up, fed up and swept up with the noble idea of going to jail for a cause. It sounded like delicious, subversive fun.

One Nuclear Bomb...
Complete Holistic Healthcare for Women by Women New PatieNt SPecialS $25 nutritional consult $45 one hour massage
Safe, Drug-Free Natural Healthcare in a Comfortable Environment The demonstration went beautifully. Hundreds of people showed up to figuratively “die” as 13 of us held hands, trespassed onto the undeniably government-owned driveway and waited to be arrested. “Do you understand that if you do not leave immediately, you will be arrested?” a polite policeman asked me. “Yes,” I squeaked. The police officer snapped the handcuffs on my wrists and held my elbow as he led me on the only perp walk of my life. “Do you have any idea what it’s like in jail?” he asked as he helped me into the paddy wagon that would deliver me to jail. “No,” I admitted. He shook his head and appeared to be genuinely sorry for the role he played in delivering me to my doom. Suddenly I felt scared. I had a terrible feeling that I was making a dangerous mistake. But it was too late to get off the ride…and this wasn’t Space Mountain. As soon as I arrived at the jail, I was put in a holding cell with about a dozen other women. Whatever offenses landed these ladies in jail had likely involved drugs, violence or some other misfortune that often results from living a tough life. They stared at me with suspicion. The room was fairly large. There was an open toilet in one corner and institutional-looking benches lining each wall. I immediately noticed that everyone was crammed on one bench except for one woman, who sat by herself on the other side of the room. She was a tall, young woman with stringy blonde hair. Scowling and simmering with hatred, she looked like she could explode any second. She put off such a palpable threat of violence that obviously everyone was staying away from her. Except for me. Since the only place left to sit was on her bench, I approached her. Everyone stared at me like I was crazy as I plopped down next to her, and as a demonstration of my clueless insensitivity to a potentially volatile situation, I smiled cheerily. “So, what are you in for?” I asked. A grim silence hung over the room. The woman stared at me in disbelief. I had obviously surprised her and she wasn’t sure how to react. Her eyes narrowed to slits as she scrutinized the dopey, eager, completely ingenuous smile on my face, looking for a hint of mockery or disrespect, in which case she appeared ready, willing and able to disembowel me with her fingernails. There was a long pause. Her lip twitched slightly. Finally she jerked her head back defiantly. “You wanna know what I’m in for? I’ll tell you what I’m in for.” She then launched into a vicious, foul-mouthed tirade about all the lousy, no-good, rotten people who had cheated, abused, deceived and otherwise ruined her life. She paced back and forth in front of me like a caged wildcat and recounted every incident of injustice, betrayal and misfortune that she had ever experienced. Her story was incomprehensible and hard to follow. She consistently contradicted herself, and I wondered if she was perhaps making things up as she went. Nevertheless, I nodded in sympathy and let her vent. She was so engrossed in her own story, she seemed to forget I was there, but I didn’t move. I just sat on the hard bench and listened to her rant. After several hours, it was becoming an agony. I had to pee. But the prospect of using the open toilet in the corner seemed worse than abandoning my new “friend” so I stayed where I was and held my bladder. Suddenly, a guard called her. Someone had posted her bail and she was going to be released. By this time, I had to pee so bad that I was beyond caring that a male guard would likely watch me do it. It was time to say goodbye. I didn’t really know her, but after listening to her rage for several hours, I felt like I had a vested interest in her. “Good luck,” I said. Then I did the most unthinking, girlfriendy thing possible. I hugged her. Her shoulders stiffened. She pulled away and stared at me, stunned. Her face reddened. Suddenly, I feared she was going to eviscerate me after all. To my surprise, she burst into tears, hid her face with her hands, and bolted across the room to the door where an armed guard escorted her out. I never saw her again. In the end, I was sorely disappointed with my parents’ reaction to my three-day jail stint. If they were properly shocked and mortified as I had hoped, they never showed it. Maybe they were smarter than I thought.

FEEL GOOD JULY
Feel Good, Do Good A glassybaby is a small, colored glass cup, candle holder or vase, meant to give warmth to a cold day, a sense of calm in a busy world. Since 1998, Lee Rhodes has been designing these cups made through a multilayered glass blowing process. At the time, she was fighting what would become a seven-year battle with a rare form of lung cancer. She had endured surgery and chemotherapy, and was searching for a few moments of serenity to escape the fear that encompassed her life. To Lee, they represented “that deep breath that we often forget to take.” To honor those who have walked down her same path, Lee established glassybaby goodwill. During her treatment, Lee met many other patients who could not afford even daily needs such as bus fare, childcare, or groceries. Today, much of the money donated by glassybaby goes toward meeting those basic needs. The votives can be mixed up to create a quiet vigil or light up a bustling party. glassybaby.com

The perfect Saturday. Waking up on my favorite plain white, ultra crisp pillowcases.
Seeing
coins of sunlight shimmer through the blinds and across the bedroom wall. Keeping my cell phone

Drinking fresh-squeezed orange juice. Savoring a backlog of unread magazines.

Drawing something
everything to enjoy.
