Some like it hot. Wearing the bare minimum. Baring skin that’s been cloistered in winter’s cell. Shedding icy inhibitions as the thermometer rises.

Some Like it Spicy. Extra burn in the Bloody. Heaping helpings of jalapeños. Daring little daydreams

at the pool. Some like it tropical. Bathing-suit brunches and birthday suit beaches. Falling asleep under an umbrella with a parasol in the drinks. Tiki torches, moonlight and mosquito nets. Some like it sizzling.

Shrimp on the Grill. S’mores on a bonfire. Sriracha on everything. Some like it sultry. Ceiling fans stirring up trouble. White cotton dresses and Frida Kahlo eyes. Terracotta tiles and turquoise skies. Some like it summer: Nature’s front porch, her favorite child, her seasonal fling. Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Kristen Solecki

Lisa does.

A mainstay in Mount Pleasant’s Old Village, Lisa Thomas’s Out of Hand boutique has, for twelve years, enchanted shoppers with their curated collections of gifts, fashion and home goods. But just like Lisa’s enthusiasm for the Village, her properties are also blooming. “Living and working in the Old Village, I am merely a caretaker of this amazing place for a moment in time,” Lisa Thomas Out of Hand & Ooh! Events 113 Pitt St. Mount Pleasant 856.3585 shopoutofhand.com

she says—and she sure is taking care. First there was Out of the Garden, for “porch living and all things flowers,” then there was South, to celebrate Southern-made goods from below the Mason-Dixon, and now Swoon, “for that special party dress, dancing shoes and jewelry that sparkles.” Lucky for Lisa, it was a fellow Mount Pleasanter that lent a helping hand. “With Lorcan Lucey’s help, we were able to purchase 123 Pitt Street and restore it to its splendor—it’s now the space for Swoon! Over the years, Lorcan has been there to help purchase my house, refinance, acquire investment property and has even been one of my own customers. I sing his praises because he does things the right way, has an unbelievable work ethic and shares his wisdom, talent and kindness with others every day.”

EXPERT ADVICE

Why is Dating So Hard? Learn why it’s difficult to find that special someone, especially in Charleston, and what you can do to increase your odds.

Laurie Ferguson

17 Years Match Making Experience

Debbie gibas

T

oday’s single parents, professionals and individuals 35 and above don’t want to find their partner at a bar. But what can you do instead? Find out the particulars from a professional matchmaker Q: What is the most common complaint that you hear from singles in the Charleston area? A: Almost every single adult that I have interviewed and counseled has complained that it is next to impossible to meet quality people. They just have no idea what to do or where to go these days. Q: Do you think that there is anything specific to Charleston that makes it more difficult to meet people? A: Absolutely. Don’t get me wrong. Nowadays, I think it is difficult for anyone who is single to find viable avenues to meet quality people. But I also strongly believe that Charleston is a particularly difficult area to be single in. Specifically, Charleston is a tourist hub on the east coast. The vast majority of recreational activities, special events, and entertainment options are geared toward families with children. There are very few options designed especially for single adults. In addition, the population is very transient so it is difficult to determine who actually lives here on a permanent basis and who is only here temporarily.

Q: Do you have an opinion as to why the divorce rate has increased so dramatically? A: The truth of the matter is that society has changed drastically over the years. Many years ago, the vast majority of adults were married and the divorce rate was minimal. Back then, people were almost exclusively introduced by friends and family members. As a result, the friends and family acted as a system of checks and balances. They ensured that the other person had the right foundation, compatible morals and values, and a similar lifestyle and goals for the future. Nowadays, the conventional ways to meet people offer no sense of security and no guarantee that the potential match is appropriate in any way. Q: Without that personal introduction from friends of family, what can a single person do? A: A professional matchmaker can play the role of family and friends. They take the time and sit with each person individually to really get to know them. They find out where they came from, what direction they are moving in, and ideally where they would like to be with the right person. This way you can ensure that you are only going to be meeting people who already have the same foundation, morals, and values and are moving in the same direction.

Summer Stage

When her mother died, my friend Becca used the $7,500 she inherited to turn an abandoned schoolhouse in rural Ecuador into Escuela Anne Stevens to carry on her mother’s ministry of serving children, as she had done her whole life in Nashville, where Becca and I met as Divinity School classmates. Several times each year, Becca, now an Episcopal priest, leads a mission group to the school where 116 kids now have air-conditioned, technology-equipped classrooms. When we had lunch two years ago, a few months after my own mother had died, Becca had recently returned from Ecuador with tales of jubilant, victorious kids wearing Escuela Anne Stevens soccer jerseys after winning their local soccer championship. “It was so clear to me that this is exactly what I was meant to do with that money. My mom would be so happy,” she said. This conversation haunted me as I was sweating over architectural drawings and construction estimates for a front porch addition to my house. This is what I was doing with my portion of my mother’s estate. I was anything but clear. My mom, like Becca’s, had been a single mother—mine was divorced with three girls and unreliable child support from my dad; Becca’s a widow after Becca’s dad was killed by a drunk driver, leaving five children. Both women had worked hard their entire life. My mother had a good eye and excellent taste and earned a living by making people’s lives more beautiful—first she worked in a plant shop, selling fuzzy-leafed African violets and fringy ferns; then in a high-end dress shop, giving women wardrobe advice; and finally for two decades she sold furniture, helping people decorate and furnish their homes. Her commission-based income was unpredictable, and she managed her finances with scrupulous anxiety. Our economics lessons were less about the value of a dollar than about worrying about a dollar. To be taking the residual of a hard-earned life spent scrimping and saving and to put it toward an unnecessary expense felt frivolous. My decision to build a porch made me scrupulously anxious. But I did it anyway. And now, as summer mornings yawn with golden light before the vicious heat and humidity fully unzip, I drink coffee on our porch, waiting for a breeze. I sweep the porch floor daily, loving the satisfaction these small strokes of domestic care bring. I water the fern and philodendron, hope the palms will perk up a bit—plants like the ones my mother once sold. I sit out here, watch birds and tame my mind into not doing much of anything. Here in the South, a front porch is summer’s stage. The outside world is ripe and full and bearing down, but the porch is where the sandals come off and the feet go up. Where lemonade gets spiked and ice melts but you don’t mind, because the sun is melting over the horizon as well, and quiet confidences and funny stories begin to trickle out into the evening air like cricket song. A Luna moth lands near the porch light—a spectacular but creepy onlooker. A porch is for idling and rocking, for curling up on the old wicker couch I found on Craigslist and listening for conversation crumbs from passersby. It is the spot for surveying the yard work that needs to be done and deciding, again, that it can wait. It is the in-between place—neither out nor in, a doorless doorway. The bridge between the wicked sun and the less-wicked air conditioning, a pause and truce between the chores and routine out in the world and the chores and routine inside the house. And this is where I, in my middle age, am too. In-between who I was in my youth and who I might become in my mature years; needing and wanting to open new doors but stuck using the same key. And so I have spent my inheritance on a shady perch for ferns and an unopened future. I have not built a schoolhouse for poor Ecuadorian children, but I hope this porch will offer lessons for living. As last summer waned, our next-door neighbors taught our family what some of those lessons might be. Our neighbor was nearing the end-stage of cancer, and every afternoon he was like a professor holding office hours, only his were “porch hours.” He sat in his rocker, his wife in the porch swing sipping white wine, as friends and family members came by and visited. Every day, for hours. There was always a happy wave, a smile, some funny or smartass comments as we passed by. On the porch they celebrated lifelong friendships, shared laughs and probably tears, drank wine, pulled up folding chairs and spilled out into the yard when more and more people showed up. They spent their porch extravagantly—nothing was skimped, nothing saved. It was all poured out. Open-air hospitality, open-armed life, opento-death laughing and loving and remembering. This I will remember in the drifty evening breeze on the porch I inherited from my mother. The laughter, the loving. SUMMER, SUMMER, SUMMER TIME It's ďŹ nally here! The season that calls for extra sunscreen, a spare bathing suit to be kept in the car at all times, and a calendar to keep track of all of the people coming in town to visit you and your city. Welcome back, Summer! Charleston loves you.

This month, I get to drive with an RV full of some wonderful friends to Bonnaroo, a music festival in Manchester, TN. While I could go on and on about all of the amazing live music we will undoubtedly be hippie dancing to that weekend, I'm most excited to see The Tallest Man On Earth wail out his incredible tunes. His 2010 release "The Wild Hunt" just may be my favorite album. After the Sister Act 2 soundtrack, of course.

Ian Blake brings the heat. Sweat doesn’t scream “success” to this exercise scientist. “That’s just your body’s response to a really hot climate, not just a response to the exercise level you’re getting.” And at every level, he’s found that weights aren’t too hot—or hefty—for women to handle. “Women are less and less afraid of doing more traditional strength-training exercises.” The former rugby player developed a client base after breaking out of a cubicle job to train at spots around Charleston, write online programs and answer questions about eating and exercise. Whether they’re working toward a triathlon or better fitness, Ian’s clients are pushed not to perfection, but toward enjoyment, moderation, and lively lifestyles. Even the ladies. “There’s definitely a more realistic look to females these days. It’s okay to have muscles, it’s okay to be an athletic chick.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “A lot of my clients are female so it’s good to know different trends, what’s new.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “Every now and then it’s good to have a laugh at yourself.”

I wondered if my parents had any idea I was about to be tortured.

amp Robin Hood wasn’t at all what I expected. For one thing, no one had happened to mention the heat. In the glossy brochure photos, the campers looked uniformly cool and collected, immaculate in white shirts and shorts on the lodge’s front porch, or posed on the high-dive in sleek tank suits. Summer camp, though I’d had no previous experience with one, seemed to conjure up visions of hammocks, lakes, camp songs, iced lemonade. I had no idea we’d be expected to ride endlessly around a dusty ring in the noonday sun, attired in hard hats, thick jodhpurs, heavy boots and long-sleeved shirts, our horses swishing flies from their dripping flanks. Parched and overheated, I tried to master the art of brushing my horse down afterward while holding my breath against the stable’s overpoweringly fetid odor. I never guessed that canoeing—an enticing-sounding activity mentioned frequently in the camp booklet—took place on a steamy, malodorous creek, with enormous dragonflies swarming everywhere, landing on my bare arms and neck, tangling terrifyingly in my hair. No one mentioned our having to drag the heavy canoes out of the water again to turn them upside down, or stumbling back up the steep, winding hillside to camp, sweaty and too exhausted to speak. But there were hints on the very first day that this place was not necessarily going to turn out to be a piece of cake. More than one counselor used the word “work” during our orientation. If we worked very hard, by the end of the summer, we would make our parents proud. If we worked together to be the very best team, and used every single day to try to improve our skills and personalities, our team would win the gold cup in August. The camp director told us, smiling broadly, that our hard work would pay off in ways we couldn’t yet foresee. At age 10, I felt instinctively that “work” and “summer” were two very different ideas which didn’t go at all well together. When I learned we’d receive letter grades in every activity class, from archery to swimming, and that any sweets from home would, from this day on, be kept at the canteen under lock and key, I wondered if my parents had any idea I was about to be tortured. Camp cost quite a bit. I could’ve stayed home and walked to the library for free. This place wasn’t a respite from a summer in D.C.—it seemed more like the Army. As predicted, we worked. We swept, dusted and sprinkled our cabins, sorted laundry and changed our beds, underwent inspections twice a week and ran everywhere when the camp triangle sounded. Even daily rest hours had strict rules—if you laughed, whispered or sat up, you lost a grade point—so I was usually too anxious to nap.

We made scenery and marched in drill teams. We made lariats out of gimp, cleaned stables and rifles, cleared dishes in the dining hall and saddled up for trail rides. We had swim races, folded the flag perfectly, ran from one end of camp to the other to make it to each of our classes on time, and stumbled up and down the hill to the creek, while the days grew longer and increasingly humid. We rehearsed for plays, went to Sunday services, learned archery and fencing and drumming, and vied with one another for good grades. There was never a dull moment. But I longed for one with all of my heart, for I was worn out. Perhaps I wasn’t a very good person, and hadn’t known it before Camp Robin Hood. One searing day at the end of July, I raced up the steps of the main lodge with a few others from my cabin when we heard the mail call sound. I stood in line with Harriet and Susie, who were chattering non-stop, wondering why my face suddenly felt so clammy. I saw their mouths moving, but their words stopped making sense. The next thing I knew, my knees wobbled out from under me as if I were on ice skates. I collapsed on the porch. I awoke in the camp infirmary a couple of days later after what seemed like a long dream of fading in and out, the yellow-flowered wallpaper and the hum of a small window fan my only anchors in a bobbing sea of faces and voices. Apparently I’d had an extremely high fever and now was not to stir from this bed, not even for meals. The camp nurse patted my shoulder and told me that parents had been called. A doctor had come to the camp twice, just to make sure. It would take time but I would be all right. The next ten days were the most wonderful of the entire summer. I slept and read Nancy Drew books or sat in a chair while the nurse put crisp new sheets on my comfortable infirmary cot. Delicious meals were brought to me in bed; I had only to ring for a cup of tea or a glass of ice water. None of my cabin-mates were allowed in to see me for the first week just in case I had something contagious, but I wasn’t lonely. I could hear the hum of camp goings-on outside the open window and was relieved to be exempt, if only for a little while, from all that trying. The infirmary was a miracle to me, proof that the universe still cared. I loved everything about this interlude: the nurse I talked with all day long, the cards my cabin-mates made me, the nightgown my mother sent, the little room which was mine alone. Eventually I returned to my cabin, under strict orders to “take it easy,” no small feat in a group of girls hoping to outdo themselves in every way before camp ended. I wasn’t to ride or run or get over-heated, and could sit out any activity which seemed too strenuous. Magically, I was strong enough to go on the moonlight hayride with all my cabin mates, as well as the trip into town for soft ice cream. And by the time my parents drove up from Washington to collect me on the last day, and I’d hugged Harriet and Susie one last time, it finally felt like summer after all, inside and out. The hard work of having fun was over.

Eyelash hypotrichosis is another name for having inadequate or not enough eyelashes. Important Safety Information

If you are using, or have used, prescription products for any eye pressure problems, only use LATISSE under close doctor care. LATISSE use may cause increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye, which is likely permanent. Eyelid skin darkening may occur, which may be reversible.

Only apply at the base of the upper eyelashes. DO NOT APPLY to the lower eyelid. Hair growth may occur in other skin areas that LATISSE solution frequently touches. If you develop or experience any eye problems or have eye surgery, consult your doctor immediately about continued use of LATISSE . The most common side effects after using LATISSE solution are itchy eyes and/or eye redness. If discontinued, lashes will gradually return to their previous appearance. Women Ruled in There were more female athletes at the 2012 Olympic games than at any other in history.

60  junew2013

skirt!magazine

Every national team included women, and on the USA team, women not only outnumbered men, but they also won 29 of the 46 gold medals our country brought home.

And encouragingly enough,TV viewership of the games among teenage girls was up 54 percent...

in the Olympics Title IX is working, right? More girls and women participate in sports in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world, and they’re crossing the finish line first, too. Women got game!

But Not at Home. A recent study by the Department of Sociology at the University of Louisville found that of the 716 issues of Sports Illustrated published between 2000 and 2011, only 35 issues (less than 5 percent) had covers featuring female athletes. Of those 35 covers, only 18 featured a woman athlete as the primary image. Female athletes got game and gold medals, but bathing-suit models are still the gold standard when it comes to (un)covering women in SI.

Sonya Stevens takes Mother Nature’s temperature. This meteorologist does more than hype up the heat. First inspired by her fifth-grade teacher and her grandmother’s attention to the weather, she studied the subject at N.C. State. Now she leads her own lessons on weather systems and safety through school visits and tours of her ABC News 4 studio. “Severe weather is not something to be taken lightly.” At the station, Sonya and her storm-savvy team put together forecasts, build graphics and stream social media to weave weather patterns into public stories. “We’re scientists, but we’re also part artist.” When she’s not marveling over Mother Nature, you can find Sonya running races, spending time with her family and friends, or playing percussion with the Charleston Community Band. But her personal daily challenge is to be dependable with reports on temperatures, pressures, and other forecast figures. “It’s all about telling people what’s happened, what’s happening now, and what’s going to happen.”

Julia Rodriguez spices up the dance scene. Julia’s feet heat up the dance floors in Charleston so often that her husband told her, “If you could eat, drink, and breathe dance, you would.” Instead, the psychiatric nurse-practitioner breathes energy into the Afro-Latino dance company she founded in 2006 to inspire diversity and cultural conversation. “I try to keep it true to the culture.” She named it Buen Aché, which roughly translates to “good life force,” at once a blessing and a greeting. As the choreographer and artistic director, Julia provides ethnic dance instruction based on a blend of YouTube performances and inner creativity. “You make it your own and people like it and they copy it, and they make it their own. And then it becomes a style.” That style unites dancers divided by various ethnicities, languages and skill levels. It’s the foundation for her vision of a multidisciplinary arts production prompting others to think more broadly about race. “It’s become something that’s more than just dance.”

Karen Brack is in the top hot seat. Thirty years ago, Chief Brack was burning to be a biologist. She decided to be an emergency medical technician part-time, but one visit with the chief at the local fire department sparked a separate career—firefighting. “There weren’t that many women in the field so I thought it would be a challenge.” She rose through the ranks and is now chief of the City of Charleston Fire Department. After years of responding to urban search and rescue missions, emergency medical scenes, and hazardous materials situations, she is managing the members of the organization. “You’re trying to take care of them so they can take care of the community.” Away from the lights and sirens, she oversees training, fire prevention and inspection, community education, equipment operations, and investigations. One perk of her profession? Her uniform. “That’s one of the greatest things about this job—I rarely have to worry about what I wear.”

Hot Wax

arolina Gifts Many things seem like a good idea until they aren’t: hiring a birthday party clown; parachute pants; Justin Bieber. But this sort of disappointment doesn’t have to happen to you and your new at-home hot waxing kit! With a little patience, preparation and a phone pre-dialed to 911, you can remove unwanted hair from yourself and unsuspecting family members from the comfort of home. First, you’ll need to order your hot waxing kit, which should include the wax warmer, the tub of scented wax, gauze strips and wooden applicator sticks. Not every kit comes complete, so be sure to research your purchase. If you receive a kit without applicator sticks, your first instinct might be to use the wooden reeds from a scent diffuser. You’ll find they are much too thin. Quickly eating a Popsicle will only get you through one application. Tree branches are dirty. Lincoln Logs are unruly and doom your child to a lifetime of building sticky cabins. Be sure to order applicator sticks. Once you have the proper tools, the time has come to wax! If this is your first time waxing at home, you won’t want to test it on yourself. Executioners don’t test the sharpness of their axes on their own heads! Don’t use your kids as guinea pigs; if something goes wrong, therapy bills can be expensive. Using an actual guinea pig might seem like a no-brainer, but resist the urge. Pets, while having an abundance of hair, make poor choices for hot wax test runs. The cat shreds you to pieces for rubbing her belly. If she finds waxing unpleasant, you could end up looking like a crosshatch drawing. Instead, tell your husband that it looks like he’s growing a hedge row at the base of his neck. Depending on the vanity level of your mate, it may take a day or a week of dropping hints before he’s begging you to help with his hair problem. Tell him he’s in luck; you just bought a new at-home hot waxing kit. After the wax has warmed for the appropriate amount of time, test it on your finger to be sure it isn’t too hot. Wipe the wax off with a tissue and instead find the tissue has adhered to your skin. Open a cabinet to search for a solution that will remove the wax from your finger, only to find your finger is now attached to the cabinet. Peel your finger from the cabinet. Try and recall your high school chemistry classes: Is there some sort of solvent that dissolves wax? Are there different kinds of wax, ranging from “candle” to “weapons grade?” Is it even legal for you to own this wax? Try and use the actual hot wax gauze to remove the wax from your finger. This won’t work, but it only made sense to try. You’re getting desperate. Rub your hand on a bath towel until gathering lint makes it look like you have a tiny, fuzzy bunny perched on the tip of your finger. Finally, rub your fingers against each other until the wax and part of your finger is gone. When your husband calls in to ask what is taking so long, tell him, “Nothing.” Have your husband enter the bathroom and sit backwards on a closed toilet. Gather some wax on to your applicator and bring it to your husband’s neck, dragging with you a thin strand of wax that will remain on your bathroom counter, sink and floor until you sell your home. Slather on the wax. If your mate complains that it is too hot, tell him whining about pain is unmanly. Remember this tactic; it will come in handy later. Lay the gauze across the hot wax now bubbling on your husband’s neck. Rub it like the lady at the nail salon. Remember her? She was very good at waxing. Why did you ever leave her? Was it really so annoying that she tried to push you to wax your lip and chin? You miss her. You wonder what she is doing now. All your daydreaming has allowed the wax on your husband’s neck to cool too much. Peel away the gauze with a mighty heave and triumphantly show your man the long hairs embedded in the wax to distract him from the pain. When he asks if it looks good say, “It looks great!” When he asks if you should also do his lower back say, “Oh absolutely! …But maybe not today.” Tell your husband you’re going to finish his neck by removing a tiny bit of wax still clinging there. Instead, use this time to blot the dots of blood rising where you removed six layers of neck skin. Tell him you need the light blue shirt he was wearing for the laundry, and hand him a fresh black or dark red shirt to wear instead. Send him on an errand to keep his mind busy. Congratulations, your waxing is done! Pack up the hot wax kit to return it, only to realize the cardboard ring around the wax pot is covered with wax, rendering the warmer unreturnable. Give the makers of the hot wax warmer props for being the evil geniuses they are. Resolve to try it again on your leg hair at a later date and put the warmer in the attic for safe keeping. You deserve a treat! Consider going to the beauty salon for an eyebrow wax to celebrate. Amy Vansant has a humor blog at KidFreeLiving.com (@KidFreeLiving), and she is sure the skin on her husband’s neck will grow back any day now.

xoxonikki After what felt like a long winter slump, my brain woke up and wanted to party. I always forget that fallow periods happen for a reason, that a field that seems overworked and exhausted can be revived, that curiosity can make a comeback, that creativity doesn't have to result in a masterpiece, that changing your work venue can result in changing your viewpoint, that what we're looking for isn't always what's waiting to be found.

I love the boards on Pinterest that illustrate a quote. This one is by Carrie Loves Design and you can buy the poster at Society6. I get overwhelmed by Pinterest, but I can’t deny I also get inspired. I want to learn how to make my own digital posters, so my new summer project is to learn more about Photoshop beyond Crop and Resize.

My state of mind has been boggled by the state I live in: 5th worst state to make a living in, 2nd worst graduation rate, 2nd worst in women killed by men, returning a man voted one of the worst governors in the U.S. to public office. At least there’s no place to go but up!
