Wake up and smell the honeysuckle sunlight. Bite into a warm Saturday afternoon and let its nectar drip through your fingers. Listen for the taffeta skirts of June brides, the lazy bark of a dog-day afternoon, the silent pause between twilight and full night. Go barefoot on a hot sidewalk and feel it bake the ache out of your winter. Track the shadow journey of your plane over a lonely farm far below or watch the wind ruffle the long grass of a field. Make Coppertone your pheromone and climbing roses your “Stairway to Heaven.” Caress the sun-filled curves of a hometown tomato and wed it to smoky slices of bacon bedded on butter lettuce. I now pronounce you BLT. Let your eyes make love to aquamarine pools, whipped-cream clouds and bold gold sunflowers. Have a sensational summer!

Single in Charleston?
Michelle is an attractive, 40-something professional woman. Recently divorced, she’s decided it’s time to meet new people. Excited for a Saturday night on the town, Michelle calls up a few of her girlfriends to make plans. The first call is Jill, married with two kids. “Sorry, Michelle,” she says, “I am just so exhausted from work this week! Thanks, but I’m settling in for a quiet night with the husband.” Undeterred, Michelle makes a second call to her old college friend, Anna. Anna says she would go out but these days she is caring for her elderly mother and cannot afford the expense of an adult sitter. Okay, Michelle thinks, one more try – Sarah! Sarah is sure to be up for it because she is also divorced and her children are teenagers. But once again, “I’d love to, but both girls are home tonight, and I haven’t spent much time with them.”
It occurs to Michelle just how much things have changed in the dating scene. Her friends have moved on and going out just isn’t the same as it was in her 20s. She wonders how she’ll ever meet someone.
Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hays of selectivewomen.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect and form REAL relationships.
That’s why so many singles contact selectivewomen.com. Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one of the area’s oldest and largest introduction services, from Charleston and Hilton Head to Savannah, Jacksonville and beyond.

Oh! Hello there, summer! It’s great to see you, really, it is. I’m so embarrassed. I’ll be honest, it slipped my mind that you were on your way. With the weather (wasn’t it dreadful?) I got distracted. But just give me a sec to get ready. Nothing an industrial-sized dollop of bronzer won’t fix. Hold on. That tankini is…somewhere...here it is. I’ll just stuff the SPF 4 and 100 in my purse. I’m so excited you’re here! I found one flip flop, is that okay? Come on, let’s do this, s u mmer!

SUMMER ALL YEAR
Why do we settle for summer fun only in the summer?
T
Dean Lofton
he memories started to flow the moment I saw the writing prompt: “What I did on my summer vacation.” It was late August and a busy summer was quickly becoming a busy fall as I reviewed teaching notes for a fall writing workshop. The prompt was one of my favorites because it’s an easy way to release writing angst left over from our school years and encourages writers to even rant a bit about the boring summers or the angst of teen summers.
memories always include the expansive feeling of living in natural time, following moods and whims instead of the clock or deadlines. I love the irony that I have to schedule it, but I now make sure “natural time” is blocked off on my calendar at least one day a week. There’s a new trend of taking vacations that restrict internet access for people to really disconnect digitally. In addition to time to disconnect, it’s also great to have a space or place that’s not associated with working. For me, it’s our master bedroom where we often watch TV or listen to music, but I have a self-imposed rule of no computers or cell phones in the bedroom. I love the luxury and pampering of hotel rooms—the simple and beautiful decor, and housekeeping and room service, of course. Inspired by hotel rooms, I redecoSunrises at the beach, swimming in creeks, rated our master bedroom, beginning with art museums, dance classes and sleeping major decluttering, finding other places for in…I slammed the brakes on memory lane piles of books and magazines to live. Keith Meany made water his work zone. The surfing enthusiast established Global Coast Survey to supply ocean surveyors and hydrographic data processors to the international oil and gas industry. “Our primary focus involves working with some of the most advanced sub-sea construction firms in the world as well as most of the major oil companies.” His team oversees the navigation and data production of unmanned submarines in oil production sites. They also make 3-D, digital blueprints of the seafloor and drilling and pipeline infrastructures, among other jobs at locations like Angola and the Shetland Islands. When he’s not on the high seas—or overseas—Keith kicks back in downtown Chucktown. Off the clock, the College of Charleston grad equips and trains students from the College’s Geology Department and the BEnthic Acoustic Mapping and Survey (BEAMS) program led by his mentor, Dr. Leslie Sautter. His hope: “They are able to work all over the globe and earn great livings in the process.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “Crisp, cool airflow.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “I like that the magazine generates an optimistic vibe.”

after this never-ending winter, open all the windows and let your house breathe. enjoy a house full of chaos, and treasure the people that come with it. actually use your outdoor shower, before work. open that expensive bottle of wine you’ve been saving, pour it into a solo cup, and don’t share with the neighbors. Closing curtains and blinds can reduce the amount of heat that passes into your home by as much as 45%, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Eat more watermelon– it contains the amino acid arginine that helps boost metabolism and slim you down by increasing lean muscle mass, plus it’s low in calories.
Stock up on oil for the tiki torches.
Use only oil-free sunscreen on the visage
Heat fatigue might all be in your head, so don’t check the temperature. If you don’t know how hot it is outside, you don’t really suffer from fatigue.
BLT please! Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, which has been shown to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
Save energy and let your computer take a nap. Set it to “sleep” mode if you are away for more than 10 minutes. When you’re finished for the day, shut the machine down completely.
Yogi style cooling: Curl your tongue by pulling both sides upward toward the middle, then breathe in through your mouth out through your nose.
Hit the farmer’s market later in the day. Vendors don’t want to carry produce back home, so you can bargain and score some deals.

Tips and tricks for a sensational summer
Light an ocean breeze candle to keep the beach close.
Put baking soda on bug bites to soothe the itching.
Loose, billowy clothes allow air movement next to the skin and help with evaporation.
Make mint-infused ice cubes for mojitos.
Put your sheets in the freezer and make up your bed right before bedtime to help you fall asleep cool.
!
Carry fun-size antiperspirant, everywhere you go.
C at c h the s a lt y sea s p r ay to h e a l scrapes.
Famous Japanese trick to get the hot air out of your car fast: Open two parallel doors on your car, then open and close one of those doors repeatedly about five times. This pushes the warm air out and the cool air in.
DIY air conditioner: If it’s hot but not humid, place a shallow bowl of ice in front of a fan and enjoy the breeze. As the ice melts, then evaporates, it will cool you off.
Lemongrass, eucalyptus and geranium essential oils are a natural mosquito repellant (and they smell good too)!
Take a dip when it’s hot outside
Purchase a Kindle cover for poolside protection.
Water provides 12 to 15 times more resistance than air, so you’ll burn about three times more calories than if you walked at a moderate pace–and it’s refreshing!
Heat fatigue might all be in your head, so don’t check the temperature. If you don’t know how hot it is outside, you don’t really suffer from fatigue.
Read some “cool” books. A Winter’s Tale, Call of the Wild or Doctor Zhivago. Reading about cold can take your mind off the thermometer.
Cool your aloe gel in the fridge.
Learn to love awkward tan lines.
Make a “cold compress.” Fill a cotton sock with rice, tie the sock with twine, and freeze it for two hours before bedtime. Then slide it between the sheets. Rice retains cold for a long period because it’s dense and starchy.
Give your oven a summer vacation. If you cook, use the stovetop, the microwave, or a barbecue.
Gel polish is a must for toenails in the sand.
The sun sets after 8 p. m . B e t h e r e .
Always carry a beach towel for spontaneous sunning.

AT A PART Y L A ST WEEKEND, I HAD A FEW TOO M ANY COCK TAIL S , AND MY GIRLFRIEND POSTED ALL THESE PICS OF ME LOOKING DRUNK AND NOT SO HOT ON HER FB PAGE . SHE TAGGED ME IN ALL OF THEM! NOW THE PICS ARE SHOWING UP ON MY FEED AND PHOTO GALLERIES. CAN I A SK HER TO TAKE THEM DOWN?
Kayla: Does the fact that I already have my dress picked out answer your question? Think Michelle Phieffer in Scarface. Haley: FAB
Let me guess: your “friend” looks super hot in those photos! Yes, you should absolutely ask her to remove the images! You can remove the tags yourself, but the photos will still be on her page, and I’m sure you have mutual friends whom you don’t want gawking at your drunk-o-clock face. Send a sweet note kindly asking her to take them down. If she says no, congrats: you officially have a Mean Girl friend! Send her some “weight loss bars” to thank her for being SO FETCH!

Muffie Donaldson changes with the seasons.
Muffie married into a family of gardening gurus and marries horticulture with home decor and accessories. She helped renovate and recreate Abide-A-While Garden Center after Hurricane Hugo hit. “Mt. Pleasant has evolved and we have had to evolve with it.” Now, she and her husband split the responsibilities: Muffie mans the store, orders and bookkeeping, and Bruce directs the individual departments. “They all have their own flavor.” She has a sweet taste for stocking the store, which showcases an array of accents including handbags, jewelry, diffusers and planters. Whether you’re on the prowl for paraphernalia, annuals, perennials, houseplants or edibles, Muffie says, “It’s a relaxing place to come and poke around.” Her insight: summertime sparks a demand for all things al fresco and pertaining to porches. “We just change with the seasons.” And she has her own serene spot beyond the Lowcountry: Canandaigua, New York. “I go there in the summer to rest, relax and regenerate.”

Abby Welch specializes in the short game.
Abby plays along the path to pleasure—the golf path, that is. Named one of the “Top 40 Instructors Under 40” by Golf Digest, she excels as a lead instructor at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Her specialty? “Short game—chipping, putting and pitching—because it can help someone’s golf game tremendously.” Although she once competed as a University of South Carolina Gamecock, Abby savors the social side of instructing. “We’re not only educators but we want to be the guide to fun.” She’s also savvy when it comes to swinging in style. “If you look like a golfer, then you will play like a golfer.” You can spot her sporting clean-cut couture, with saddle Oxford shoes and a swanky golf shirt. “It’s a whole new wardrobe.” Away from work, the teacher takes it easy with her husband—a mate on the Mary Agnes—and their little boy. “Usually we’re hanging out, playing, trying to teach him how to putt.”

Who are you when no one is watching?

“Play is a form of worship,” goes one of my favorite quotes. Summer is made for play, maybe because we relegate it to “vacation” time. When I’m playing with my camera or paints, time bends in a funny way. It both stops and flies. Hours can pass before I know it, but I’m also in a time-less space that feels a lot like being a child again. Before I was old enough to know I was “wasting” time, I spent whole days setting up a sacred pretend space on my grandmother’s bedroom floor and constructing elaborate lives for my paper dolls. That’s when I really knew how to worship. Follow Nikki’s blog at fridaville.com. 78 junew2014 skirt!magazine
