Make a mental map of summer. Mark it with an off-the-grid cabin at the
end of a gravel road. A towel on a beach
without Wi-Fi. The spiral of a labyrinth on
a spiritual journey for one. A souk filled
with spices and silks in a strange city.
Big black sunglasses and strappy sandals on the Isle of Capri.
Hiking boots or horseback into the wild.
Sleeping in a tepee under a full moon.
A zip line into a mountain lake or a
cruise line to the Greek Islands. Retail
safaris and urban camping in a hotel with
24-hour room service. The back of beyond
at Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert.
A windows-down, radio-up roadtrip.
Dare it or dream it, but let your mind wander. Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Ashley Barron

Stacy and Bruce do.
When Bruce, Stacy and their family escaped the brisk Philly winters in 2005, they brought their knowledge of insurance adjusting to the sunny city of Charleston. They found what was a common business elsewhere was less familiar in the Lowcountry, so they started AJR Insurance Consultants—named after their kids, Ashleigh, Jamie and Ross. If you need to make a claim on your home, business or any other property, Stacy and Bruce can advocate on your behalf in dealing with the insurance company. “It’s the policy holder’s right to hire us. Let us take the stress off of you—we should be your first call!” So if anyone knows about pulling together as a team and making things right, it’s them. And that’s why they appreciate Lucey Mortgage. “We met Lorcan when we moved here; he was coaching against our daughter’s soccer team.” Making it a point to check in frequently about whether it was the right time to refinance, Stacy and Bruce made the leap with Lorcan’s guidance last fall. “You like to have people on your team that you trust. The Lucey Mortgage crew was fantastic—they do what they say they’re going to do and they know the business.”

The
To-Go Issue
Because of this month’s theme, I was going to write about some recent wonderful Wow! experiences, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to talk about the current “War on Women.” This year, members of Congress have introduced more than 40 bills and state legislators have introduced more than 600 measures that would restrict a woman’s access to a full range of reproductive health care, including attempts to defund Planned Parenthood and other family planning services. Every day seems to bring yet another misogynistic piece of news. Rush Limbaugh called a young activist a slut and a prostitute on air and demanded to see videos of her having sex because she supported insurance coverage for birth control pills. In Arizona, House Bill 2625 would have given employers the right to fire women if they used birth control “for contraceptive, abortifacient, abortion or sterilization purposes.” New Hanover, NC, county commissioners voted unanimously to turn down an $8,899 grant because it would provide medical services related to family planning. And in Virginia politicians wanted to require an unnecessarily invasive vaginal ultrasound test for anyone seeking an abortion. (As one lawmaker was reported to have remarked to another, the women had already been probed when they had sex, so what’s the big deal?) In a recent speech, Hillary Clinton said, “Why extremists always focus on women remains a mystery to me. But they all seem to. It doesn’t matter what country they’re in or what religion they claim. They want to control women. They want to control how we dress. They want to control how we act. They even want to control the decisions we make about our own health and bodies.” If you’re tired of it, don’t sit back and wait for change. Attend one of the state or local Unite Against the War on Women marches on April 28th and keep in mind the national march in Washington, D.C., in September. of clarity (or cloudiness, depending on your intake), I’m reminded that I live in a place where people vacation. Yes, there’s the odd grumble about out-of-towners walking four abreast down King Street’s trippy sidewalks, the gawping mouths at Rainbow Row. But we’re just jealous. We want to staycate or vacate, and we want to do it now. Unfortunately, the most action my suitcase has seen lately was hauling books when I moved a few months ago; my United Airlines miles limp in 20 at a time whenever I swipe my Visa at Dellz. But talking to our profiles this month had me checking my schedule and digging up my passport. This May, we present to you a skirt! version of Choose Your Own Adventure:Tanzania with Kathleen? Absolutely. Athens with Debby? Sure.Tortola with Ali? Of course. Our To-Go issue is full of to-dos. I’ll have my travel list ready right after I mix up these margaritas... See you on the porch.

They tell you travel is fun, educational, and enlightening and they’re right. It can also be scary.
You still have it, right?
W
Julie Hammonds
hen you travel for just a week or two, every day is different. There isn’t time to develop a routine. Hit the road for a month or more, and the story changes. In 2003, nursing a hurt heart, I went wandering for six months. Being on the road that long gave me plenty of time to develop habits bordering on the compulsive. I’m not saying that judgmentally. I was traveling alone. I entered unfamiliar territory every week and sometimes every day. I didn’t make reservations ahead of time; following my own whims and entrusting myself to the care of strangers seemed like important arts to practice. It was the kind of trip I needed to take. But traveling that way also left me at the world’s mercy. Engaging in a few compulsive rituals didn’t seem like an unreasonable response. One habit I relied on was emptying my pockets. After each journey to a new city—once I had found the cheap place to stay, walked up the many flights of stairs, entered the clean yet shabby room, and checked the view (never a cathedral or the ocean, but a girl can dream)—I emptied the contents of my pockets onto the bedspread. Coat pockets, pants pockets, pack or purse, all of it, until I was free of burdens and the bed was strewn with stuff. Time to take stock. Sunglasses, lip balm, multi-language dictionary. Paper money for whatever country I would sleep in tonight. Trusty map and guidebook, hard proof that wherever I might be, I was not lost. Water bottle and snacks to ensure my body would be fine until I found a meal. After surveying my possessions, I put everything back where it belonged. If I had pulled things out and used them during the journey and put them away in a different spot, I shifted them home again. Everything had its proper place, and back into its place everything went. They tell you travel is fun, educational, and enlightening, and they’re right. It can also be scary. I love to explore the world, really I do, but moving from one spot to another still makes me nervous. No matter how often I did it during those six months, boarding a train or bus always felt like casting off from a familiar harbor to be tossed by the waves of a restless, formless ocean.
Things disappear when you’re on the move; at the very least, things shift. Holding onto your ticket is only the most prominent of many concerns when you’re trying to hold onto languages, destinations, and currencies at the same time. Suddenly, what you thought was in this pocket, isn’t. Where is that coat, your guidebook, the passport? Now your heart is in your throat. You still have it, right? The shifting of physical objects as you move from place to place can be nerveracking enough. But sometimes other things shift; your resilience and good humor, the way you feel about the road and the people you meet along the way. As you’re traveling, everything changes, from borders and languages to currencies and terrain. Intangibles you count on can shift as well: your willingness to trust in the kindness of strangers, your ability to adapt to new places. Over such changes, I felt little control. At the end of every journey on that long road, emptying my pockets and taking stock helped me keep track of things I felt I could control. They were more than things: The guidebook was my friend. The sunglasses were my shields and protectors. The money and passport were my security, my means of moving through the world. I travel light, of course. You have to, when you’re wandering for such a long time, alone. It’s just you, lugging that bag across the continent. Lightness of possessions becomes totemic. But paring down has the paradoxical effect of concentrating each item’s power. The fewer things I carried, the more important each became. Renewing my acquaintance with my possessions after every journey was a ritual I counted on. After taking stock of my things, it was time to survey the rest of my baggage. Prone on the bed, eyes closed, I let my mind wander as my body had just finished doing. I would take stock again, this time sifting and sorting the condition of my physical self, my memories and dreams, fears and hopes. I had been far from home for a long time. How was the world treating me? How was I treating myself? How was my body doing? How was my heart? My mind would drift as my spirit calmed. After 10 minutes or two hours, the jumbled nerves and tangled feelings of traveling into the unknown settled into a quiet hum. The excitement of being on the road rekindled in my heart. I started looking forward to exploring the next new world, waiting just outside. Having taken stock, I knew once more that I was okay. I was alone, yet secure; I didn’t know where I would sleep tomorrow, but I didn’t need to. I knew I could count on my possessions, tangible and not. I could trust the road and my journey once again. I could open my eyes, gather my things together, and walk out the door into another unfamiliar place.
Although Julie Hammonds still goes wandering, these days most of her trips are for her job. Don’t feel sorry for her, though: As staff writer for a magazine about wildlife, she gets to visit some amazing places. 74

To The Other Side
Rendezvous Edith Cavell towered before us. An imposing, icy dame, her face was crevassed by weather and the cruel rutting of time. But boy was she gorgeous. Astonishingly so, with her rugged silhouette and handsome brow outlined by alabaster snow against an azure sky. Mount Edith Cavell was our first of many mountains to summit on a five-day bicycle tour in the Canadian Rockies, and her beauty as much as her sharp incline left me breathless. She rose out of the densely forested landscape with fierce grace and commanding presence, like the Greta Garbo of geological formations—I couldn’t keep my eyes off her. We began Edith’s ascent only an hour or two into our trip. Our small band of merry cyclists—my husband and me, and Darlene, a spunky middle-aged nurse on “holiday” from Australia, led by Peter, the tour company owner and German ex-pat/ former adventure racer, and Dieter, his spry, very German 70-year-old father and possibly the most gentle person I’ve ever met—had rolled out of the small town of Jasper that morning just as a huge elk ambled across the road, on cue, like a photo op staged by some behind-the-scenes Canadian tourism Oz. We were in Jasper National Park, the wildest of Canada’s wilderness parks, an area where bears and mountain goats are as likely to be on the road as bikes and Winnebagos, and the July air was, thankfully, about 40 degrees cooler than the searing heat we’d left behind. I felt frisky and raring to go, which was a good thing—Edith would demand every ounce of that energy. She was nine miles of uphill climb, a vertical DNA strand of merciless switchbacks. As we rounded each curve, Edith’s snow-crowned peak would appear a little closer. My ears popped several times with the 2200-foot elevation gain; my lungs and thighs were screaming, but Edith’s alpine glory was like a siren song propelling me onward and upward. This was my first Rocky Mountain high, and I felt buzzed, possibly even stoned. Mount Edith’s postcard-perfect grandeur was only part of the sensory whirl. There was also the forest scent of Peppermint Patty and the park’s cascading quiet, ruffled only by the rhythm of my heavy breathing and the slow roll of rubber tire on asphalt—all intensified by exercise-induced endorphins rocketing through my veins. Mount Edith Cavell was a steep grade, but it had been an even longer climb to arrive here. We’d actually booked this trip two years earlier, after spending months researching various tour options—ruling out cushy ones with all the bells and whistles and the bottom-barrel ones that were a little too bare-bones, until we finally settled on Peter’s just-right outfit. Then three days before takeoff one of our daughters ended up in the hospital. That extra couple-hundred bucks for trip insurance turned out to be one of my smarter investments. After a brief scare, my daughter was fine, but then, in a very short order, both my parents’ health went careening downhill. Divorced for decades with separate lives in separate states, my mother, newly diagnosed with ALS, and my father, with rapid onset Alzheimer’s, were now, though still estranged, oddly joined, literally, in a very ill fate. For the next year and a half, I became an itinerant mom and traveling daughter, going to doctors’ visits and spending weekends with my mom. My laptop traveled too, and there I’d see the folder titled “bike trip,” where I’d saved our itinerary, reservation confirmation, airport shuttle info, “what to pack” details. I realized that half the pleasure of a vacation is the planning, the anticipation, and the folder contained that latent excitement even as I found myself journeying through this new and unpleasant terrain, on a trip I had not planned, with an empty suitcase and no clue what I should be packing. My mother died seven months after my father passed away, and a month after that, I emailed Peter and asked if there was room on his next Jasper-to-Banff tour, departing in three weeks. “Yes,” he said; we rebooked. Reaching the top of Mount Edith Cavell that first day felt better than anything I’d felt in a long while. The scenery was surreal, the physical work hard and gratifying, the release—a heady rush of grief and joy wound together through two years and nine miles of twisting switchbacks—was immense. At the top we parked the bikes and walked a rocky path to Angel Glacier, a small lake pooled in her lap, huge chunks of ice floated in the ghostly blue water. The surrounding valley was littered with boulders and gravel, refuse left in a glacier’s wake like some giant had come stomping through, which I suppose it had. This was a hard geography—ice and rock and altitude—and yet its beauty and enormity were also soothing. In the days that followed, we biked past waterfalls, massive icefields, more hills and long, blissfully flat roads alongside the Athabasca River. Every vista was gorgeous, every overlook picture-worthy, but nothing surpassed that first day’s climb up Mount Edith Cavell. Dieter told us, in his thick German accent, that the mountain was named in honor of a British nurse in World War I who helped Allied soldiers trapped behind enemy lines escape to safety. Cavell was found guilty of treason and executed by a German firing squad. Some of the Canadian soldiers she aided named this mountain in gratitude and tribute to her heroism. Like those soldiers, I, too, remain grateful for her escort on my uphill journey to the other side.

MY CHARLESTON MAY
.
May. May is an exciting time in Charleston. Despite the tragedy that is the end of loquat season, there are other things to look forward to. The start of Spoleto brings a whole different feel to Charleston; it’s an infinitely special time for the city. College students’ graduation is monumental, and Cinco de Mayo is a cherished holiday around these parts. Beach days happen more often than not and everyone in the city possesses that summertime glow. It becomes acceptable to wear the same sundress three days in a row and count a dip in the ocean as a proper shower. Falling asleep with salty hair and sandy skin suddenly feels like the only way.
The raspberry doughnut at Glazed Goumet is as delicious as it is pretty.
Maison Sud has beautiful pieces to showcase summer produce.
A hummus, sundried tomato, olive and feta wrap from Roti Rolls—great way to start the day.
Summer is a great time to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juices.
Summertime in Charleston is the time to eat and drink bright colors; raspberry doughnuts, pink wine, green smoothies, and of course, tacos.
Atelier Gallery, near Broad Street, hosts some gorgeous pieces from local artists. 42

The Farmers Market:
this month I love
The Farmers Market is in full swing by May, which elicits good things all around; more meals at home, more candlelit porch dinners, and fresh juice all the time. I set my alarm every Saturday morning, as I like to be there early—when the air is still misty and the farmers still look bleary-eyed. I make the rounds, pick out some produce, then buy breakfast and sit in the grass, listening to the bluegrass musicians. There’s no other way I’d rather spend my Saturday morning.
Carrots taste great in so many forms; juiced, roasted, raw, dipped in hummus.
1. Carrot apple ginger orange juice. 2. Puppy-snuggling. 3. The piano bar at Halls Chophouse. 4. Luxurious breakfasts on the porch. 5. The Belmont’s cheese plate for dinner. 6. The jasmine scent taking over the peninsula. 7. The May He’s So Original. 8. Paired dinners at Two Boroughs Larder. 9. Ramps! With every meal! 10. Loquat mojitos.
May in Charleston calls for daily smoothies, pink wine with every meal, regular beach days, and floating down the Edisto River with a big group of people you love. Visit both the downtown and the Mt. Pleasant markets—Saturdays for downtown, Tuesdays over the bridge.
The best treat at the Farmers Market: Roots Ice Cream.

Blake Suarez is the new kid on the block. If Charleston could possibly get any more creative, it did last year with the autumn arrival of one charming redhead at Fuzzco— the powerhouse boutique design firm working out of their famed Dwell-approved Spring Street digs. “Before coming to Charleston, I was freelancing on the road and hooking up to Wi-Fis in small coffee shops, sometimes hotel parking lots, to meet deadlines.” Though his current work is within Fuzzco’s realm, he’s previously worked with Patagonia and Warner Music. (One of his t-shirt designs is even available at Half-Moon Outfitters!) “I moved out of Austin looking for a new home, but the creative community beyond Fuzzco was an incredible bonus, which I never expected. By the end of my first month in Charleston, I was overwhelmed by all of the creative minds I had met.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “Wearing a skirt is an amazing way to strike up conversation and to steal some wandering eyes, every time.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “I love opening up to My Charleston and staring at that contributor’s profile photo. Clams. I like how we get them fresh out of the water here. 5 Favorite Ingredients:
Garlic mushrooms salt butter olive oil
How is your fish served and what makes it different from other local spots? Our fish is good served three ways: blackened, with an herb aioli, grits and collard greens; grilled with ponzu sauce, rice and wilted spinach; and herb crusted with tomato relish, a grit cake and the vegetable of the day. I like it because you get to choose how you want it cooked, opposed to having the choice already made for you. What’s your favorite burger? The Carolina Burger because I like the tanginess of the BBQ sauce and crispiness of our coleslaw.
Five Restaurants on your Bucket List French Laundry, California Charlie Trotter’s, Chicago Russian Tea Room, New York Must-try appetizer: Moroccan Spiced Filet Tips.
Most popular brunch menu item: Crab cakes benedict.
Your favorite dish to prepare: Shrimp and grits.
Favorite dessert to share. Guinness chocolate cake with Bailey’s frosting.

hen I was young, I longed to be British, unaware that no amount of practice could effect a transformation. I perched on the crimson carpeted staircase halfway between our home’s upstairs and downstairs—accidentally predating the Masterpiece Theater series of that name by many years—where I read A.A. Milne poems aloud in an English accent while my all-too-American family members stepped around me. My role model at the time was the enchanting child actress Hayley Mills. Londonborn and bred, she rose to fame after being discovered by the wife of Walt Disney and cast in popular films. Hayley was everything to me: heroic, deeply feeling, poised, thoughtful. She was ever-so-cheerful, even when, in the movie Pollyanna, she tragically lost the use of her legs falling out of a tree, all in an effort to avoid the critical notice of her rich, controlling Aunt Polly. Hayley had a musical, spontaneous laugh. She could blink back tears with the bravest. Her upperclass accent hinted of afternoon teacakes in manicured gardens, and I loved the wonderful way she bit her lip and furrowed her brow when she was thinking hard. “You look and sound like a complete dork,” said my older brother definitively, watching me attempt the accent and the lip-bite/brow-furrow at the family dinner table. “More than usual, even.” I read and re-read A Little Princess and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, thrilled by the way the English heroines triumphed over adversity. Plus, they had nannies and ayahs and school headmistresses. I had only a boring American babysitter named Joan who put her sock-clad feet

up on the coffee table and read Seventeen magazine all night, preferable to conversing with me no matter what accent I employed. “Cheerio, Joan,” I said, waving her off, Hayley style, on one of her many voyages to the kitchen. “It’s been grand, really it has.” “Like I told you: You are so definitely a dork,” said my brother. My mother’s great-aunt actually was British; it’s possible my fixation with all things English was already lodged in my DNA, one proper little pair of chromosomes clad in hats, gloves and sensible shoes. I never had the chance to meet Great-Aunt Millie, but the wooden server in our dining room held the hand-me-down fish forks, silver and linens she’d bequeathed, as well as old photos of croquet parties on English lawns, testament to a more refined life than the one my parents managed. My mother invoked her British relative’s manners regularly, as if by removing a wayward ketchup bottle from the table (“Millie would have been appalled!”) or using the proper small flat knife for butter, we might sashay a millimeter closer to the monarchy ourselves. I had a headful of nonsense about Great Britain by the time I actually set foot on English soil. As a high school student traveling with my peers and a couple of school chaperones, I was so thrilled by our adventure that if I’d spotted a sign inside Heathrow airport pointing the way to Narnia or Fairyland or high tea or even just “Frocks,” I would have been delighted and not even surprised. The real England was satisfying enough, if decidedly down to earth. We rode double-decker buses, saw a Shakespeare play in Stratford-upon-Avon, got sloshed in an English pub when the chaperones were off shopping, strolled Kew Gardens and watched pigeons crisscross Trafalgar Square. I loved the bellhops in our third-rate hotel, who talked to me in what they hoped were Southern accents and tried to teach me Cockney rhyming slang. But nowhere to be found was the magical country I’d had in my head for so long, inhabited by Mary Poppins and Beatrix Potter, Jane Austen and Christopher Robin. British food, much like the citizens, seemed neither very good nor very bad. No heavenly puddings or horrible porridge, as in the books I’d read, just soup and fish and morning buns, or greasy chips wrapped in newspaper. Many years later, I really did find the London of my dreams. As luck would have it, it happened in San Francisco. The Great Dickens Christmas Fair and Victorian Holiday Party meant that the country that had long resided in my imagination sprang to life for a few short weeks, complete with chimney sweeps, ladies in hoop skirts and gents in top hats, and the sweet scent of vanilla and roasted chestnuts perfuming the air. Inside an enormous building, shops and streets were built and filled with game parlors, photos, and antique furniture. Sailors sang sea shanties dockside while carolers roamed the alleyways under a mantle of paper snow. Telegrams were hastily delivered to apothecaries and book stalls, delicious rum cakes and meat pies were nibbled in emporiums, marvelous conversations took place inside the Victorian Adventurers’ club. As Madame L’Etoile, an East End cook’s assistant posing as a French spiritualist, I welcomed people into the parlor I’d built and decorated, and wobbled all day between intentionally bad French and broad Cockney slang, in any way I pleased, while offering advice and mystical readings. Just my cup o’ tea. On the last weekend of the last year I worked the Dickens Fair, a welldressed couple stopped into my booth. “’Ello, luvs,” I said. “Care for a readin’ and a nice sit by the fire for a bit?” I patted the pillow-adorned chaise, and they settled themselves comfortably. They chatted with me in true Dickens Fair spirit, even though they weren’t in costume; I loved the way they were pretending to be upper-class Brits inquiring about their futures. My version of a Cockney accent grew broader and more outlandish as I told their fortunes and they continued to play along. “Ever so nice to meet you, guvs,” I said at the end of the reading. “And may I say, you’ve ’ad a bit o’ practice in the King’s English? I ain’t never not heard nuffin’ like it.” I winked at the nicely-dressed woman and jabbed the man in the side with my elbow. “Actually, we really are from London,” said the wife. “We’re vacationing here in San Francisco for the week.” Oh, dear. In my mind, I heard my brother say, “You not only sound like a dork, you are a dork.” Yet somehow the couple was smiling at me, and the woman was saying kindly, “You know, your accent wasn’t bad at all. We enjoyed this whole experience. You’ll have to visit England one day.” It’s a grand idea, and I plan to take her up on it, as soon as I figure out which particular country she meant. Debby Moore | International Athlete When she hit 40, Debby decided to hit the gym. “I met Barbara, a personal trainer, and my neighbor and I took a class with her. Barbara looked at us and she said, ‘Have you ever thought about doing a marathon?’ We laughed!” But after an informational meeting for Team in Training—a group that trains and supports runners while they raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society—Debby found herself signing up to complete a marathon in Dublin. “They convinced us that they could train us and that we would be successful if we did everything that they said.” And they were right. Debby has since run in U.S. races but also in Germany, Greece and around Mt. Kilimanjaro. “I thought Dublin would be a one-time thing but the next thing I knew I was signing up for the next season. That’s how it is, it’s addicting. Turning 50 wasn’t really a big deal, running a marathon was.” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach

Kathleen Ellis | Global Health Guardian When the Medical University of South Carolina began to make ties between its traveling doctors, researchers, and the groups that visited from abroad, the effort toward networking resulted in the Center for Global Health. Responsible for coordinating everything from clinical efforts to cultural niceties, Kathleen is committed to the cause. “Getting people engaged in global issues and building those connections—on a larger scale, that’s what my role is and I believe in it.” Through the Center, doctors working on clinical, research, training and educational projects abroad have Kathleen to harmonize their work— “Before this, a lot of people weren’t aware they were working in the same country.” Projects range from crafting sturdy neck braces from available materials (like sweetgrass!) to training local doctors to use million-dollar machines that were donated sans manuals. “What I’ve been influenced by is how many people—no matter what culture I’ve been in—have fantastic ideas and sometimes all people need is a little bit of empowerment to make something happen.”

Captain Ali Karn | Super Sailor Though Ali grew up in a sailing family, it wasn’t until the economy began its downward spiral that she gave more thought to the water again. “When The Secret came out, it was talking about visualizing what you want your life to look like. I tore the cover off of a travel catalog and put it on my refrigerator. The magnet that held it up said ‘Dwell in Possibility.’” And on her 35th birthday Ali woke up and refused to leave her bed until she had come up with a plan. “I said alright, I’m going to get my captain’s license.” These days Ali is up and down the East Coast constantly, and depending on the season, can be found racing in the Caribbean (her all-girl team is a winner), teaching newbies through Charleston Sailing School and delivering yachts to new buyers. “The ocean just captures your soul. They tell you travel is fun, educational, and enlightening and they’re right. It can also be scary.
You still have it, right?

On that empty highway I drove, on my way from my old life to the new.
O
Cyndi Briggs
h, there are so many bad things that can happen out here to a foolish girl like me.” The thought flashed through my mind unbidden, perhaps the reverb of something my worried, safety-prone grandmother once said to me when I was a little girl. An echo of my former life, my East Coast life, my Southern life. Driving alone on ominous Route 666 through the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, the landscape looked like the surface of the moon or Mars. Dry, dusty brown earth and sage met surreal, jagged rock formations that cut the horizon line like a worn saw blade. On that empty highway I drove, on my way from my old life to the new. I had left my condo in North Carolina, the rooms empty, the carpets vacuumed into neat, patterned lines. Movers loaded my few possessions into a truck to meet me in Oregon, my new home, where I’d start graduate school in the fall. In my car I carried a few personal items: clothes for two weeks of travel, my big black dog asleep in the back seat, and my two cats in a carrier howling periodically at the indignity of their suddenly transient lifestyle. My mom rode with me as far as central Illinois, where her mother and siblings lived. The morning I left her at my grandmother’s farmhouse to continue on westward, alone, I found her sitting on the dining room floor with her arms wrapped tightly around the neck of my dog, crying. “You’re taking the dog away from me, too,” Mom choked into her fur. My dad, a guy who loves maps, backroads, and byways, offered to help me drive all the way to Oregon. Before I left home, he traced his finger over the black lines on the atlas, roads he’d never explored. On the East Coast, roads and towns are condensed. Routes out west cut across great expanses of nothing. I watched my dad’s finger as it slowly traced paths through those empty spaces. My cross-country trip was his dream. But I knew that I had to make this trip alone. The journey from my Southern home, where I spent the first 31 years of my life, to the new life that awaited me in Oregon had to be mine alone. I needed this rite of passage. I briefly questioned the wisdom of my decision as I drove through New Mexico. I kept losing radio stations. I hit the scanner and watched the numbers fly by endlessly, looping back and starting over: There were no FM stations. I crested a hill and the highway stretched black and shining before me. No cars behind me, no cars in front of me. A few scattered trailer homes sat far off the road at the end
of dusty imprints that I supposed passed for driveways. My cell phone warned me, “No signal.” I switched to the AM frequency and found one station, conservative talk radio, where Rush Limbaugh reminded me of all the things one might fear in the world. I turned off the radio and let the silence come. In the silence, I thought about the sequence of events that brought me to this moment. I’d dreamt of Oregon for years. I couldn’t explain a longing to live in a place I’d never visited, so I kept the dream to myself. But I’d glimpse pictures of the wild ocean slamming the rocky coast, or endless green mountains and valleys followed to the east by high desert, and my heart would inevitably tug westward. Oregon seemed so wild, natural, untamed. Everything in me wanted to experience those very feelings, to leave the safety of a life I’d grown bored with. What held me back? A comfortable job, student loan debt, a non-committal boyfriend, and a new condo painted beige with beige carpet. Beige on beige. A life stuck in neutral. When I turned 30 it was as if a switch flipped inside my heart. It became impossible to wait any longer to begin enacting my dream. I broke up with the boyfriend who couldn’t decide if he wanted to marry me, put the condo on the market and turned in my resignation at work. I was operating blind, trusting my gut instincts to lead me. I was accepted into a doctoral program at Oregon State, found an apartment online, and started packing my car. Over and over again I questioned the wisdom of my decision. One day, researching my new home state, I read that Oregon’s official motto is “She flies with her own wings.” I started to cry and knew with all my heart and soul my decision was a good one. In New Mexico, I watched the sun setting over the landscape and tried to calm my fears of an uncertain future. Off in the distance, a giant rock outcropping loomed on the horizon. Ship Rock, according to my atlas. Like a mythical castle made of stone, outlined by the blaze of setting sun. Solid and real in the middle of nothingness. Back in the car, peace settled around me. What could I do if the worst happened? Not much. My worry wouldn’t prevent disaster. Nor would it make me safe. So what was the point? I put away my concerns and focused on the moment: Ship Rock, the endless New Mexico landscape, the ribbon of highway, the snore of my dog asleep on the seat behind me, the quiet cats. I rested in the heaviness of a life unfolding, the silent moments ticking past as I left everything known and stepped into my new life. In a week I would arrive in Oregon, to a town I’d never visited, meeting people I’d only talked to by phone. I had no idea what would happen next. I turned my eyes back to the long stretch of road and to Ship Rock, brilliant, all the colors of a desert rainbow, washed out and weathered by the elements. It would be here long after I died, still watching lonely travelers pass by, on their way from one destination to another. From one place to somewhere else entirely different.

FEEL GOOD MAY
15 F UM
Feel Good and Bee Healthy. Active Manuka Honey from New Zealand is known as “healing honey” and is believed to be one of nature’s wonder drugs by its fans (including Dr. Oz), who cite its antibiotic and antiseptic properties. Enthusiasts claim that it can effectively treat peptic ulcers and be used topically and internally on wounds and skin problems like acne to speed the healing process. To be considered beneficial for its antibacterial properties, Active Manuka Honey must have a UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) rating of at least 10 or higher. As a bonus, the taste has been described as smooth, creamy and caramel-like. Yum! You can find it locally at Everyday Gourmet on Coleman Boulevard in Mt. Pleasant and also at Whole Foods. There are different brands so make sure the one you get is the real deal by checking the UMF rating.

Yet another anti-woman bill passes in the US: Is Arizona trying to bring back coathanger abortions? In addition to defining life as beginning before conception and making medication abortions more difficult, the new law bans abortions after 20 weeks. Amniocentesis is performed between the 15th and 18th weeks of pregnancies, with final results often taking two weeks. By banning abortions after this date, the state ensures that women will be forced to carry to term regardless of complications or genetic risks.
why is there a war on women?

I realized recently that many of the items on my wish list for the future are things I could do right now.
Instead,
I postpone, proscrastinate and put off pleasure while I dig into my well-worn pedestrian path
day after day after day.
There’s always a leak in the roof, a bill to pay, a reason to be cautious.
pack a bag, lock the door behind me and set off into into the unknown, like the usually sensible Mole in my favorite book,
I need to
Wind in the Willows.
I found this reproduction Buddha head on a weekend trip to Beaufort, SC. It was one of those love-at-firstsight purchases, the kind I never regret.
On Constant Replay: I’ve been watching Let’s Get Lost, the Bruce Weber film about Chet Baker, in sections on YouTube and his jazz masterpiece just won’t let me go.
I love our skirt! luggage tags and the little design our Art Director, Caitilin McPhillips, came up with for them. We’re giving them away at events—be on the lookout.
I didn’t notice that the detail on the side of my new sunglasses matches my tattoo until someone pointed it out. Now I love hiding behind them even more.
My Skirt the Rules bracelet from Kate Spade reminds me not to become too middle-of-the-road.
