Drive for hours to Grandmother’s house with an oversugared toddler, a teenager who hates you right now and a dog that needs a whisperer. Toss and turn on leaky air mattresses while your brother’s family gets the beds.
Start turkey prep and Bloody Marys at dawn. Nurse a grudge against the sister-in-law who’s sleeping in and covets your family’s heirloom silverware. Wake her up by tuning every TV in the house to football except for the one tuned to cartoons. Cook All Day. Have
More Bloody Marys. Bring up the time your mother missed your 5th grade Christmas play. When she protests it was 25 years ago, slam out of the house and wait for someone to beg you to come back in. Preferably your heartless mother. Count the silverware as you wash it. Count the days until December 25. Count to 10 and pump up the mattress. Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Renia Metallinou

Jo Moise
is a Londoner, graduate of The London College Of Fashion and friend of Steven Shell. She began making Jewelry in the late 80’s, after being given a box of microscope slides to play with, nothing came of it until an afternoon spent wandering around the Victoria and Albert Museum, where she chanced upon all the Victorian Mourning and Sentimental jewelry... ‘All those trapped emotions frozen in time, weeping from the confines of a sterile cabinet stirred something in me’ The next few weeks were filled with repeated visits to the gallery were she
ELEMENTS
Jill Schwartz
Jill’s career as a jewelry designer started when she was 3 years old. Forbidden to have pierced ears, she craftily resorted to gluing beads to her ears. The daughter of two designers, you could say she has design in her blood. You could also say she crossed an ocean to find it. While her design education from Cornell and Pratt gave her discipline, it was her travels through Europe in her early 20s that ignited her passion. Her love for shopping led her to bead stores, and her talent for putting them together in unique ways
quickly absorbed all the nuances of this period. Grief, Joy, Beauty, Longing, preservation and Love were all part of the language of these pieces and it was this that stimulated her enough to realise this into a 21st century setting. Fast forward a few years, Jo is still speaking the language of the Victorians and other vintage movements. The collection has grown to include Chillii, Lichens and wings, all still singularly suspended in space and trapped in time. Captured and set in glass. Worn by Tina Weymouth, modelled by Christy Turlington and admired by Halle Berry, these are timeless pieces that transcend fashion yet remain art.
found her her first admirers as she travelled on trains. It was then she realized that she could be making money to buy her an extra day in Europe. That extra day turned into a year, and Elements/Jill Schwartz was born. You’ll no longer find her jewelry sold on the beaches of Mykonos or hawked at cafés in Amsterdam. Her company’s brands are now sold in boutiques and major chains around the world. And while her mixture of unusual vintage and modern materials has evolved over the years, each piece is still unmistakably, inimitably “Jill.”
A rather fantastic selection of handcrafted totes and purses are now in stock, found by Steven whilst on his travels in Bali. Makes a fabulous gift or a treat for yourself.
.... and not forgetting the beautiful furniture. Steven Shell Living is the factory store for www.stevenshell.com. Come and take a look.

Grace Notes
Few of my Thanksgivings as a grown woman have been spent with immediate family. My parents are long gone and my brother lives in a different part of the country, so over the years I’ve experimented with how to spend the day. Often I have no idea where I’ll end up, or with whom, until the holiday has almost arrived. In the past, my mother always invited a “stray” to our family Thanksgiving table: an ex-girlfriend of my brother’s, a friend’s Spanish au pair, or the new hire at her favorite furniture showroom downtown. As a child, I sometimes resented her attentiveness to a stranger. Now that I’m often that stray, I appreciate the graciousness of the gesture in a new way. I like the unpredictability of being an import at other people’s Thanksgivings. I always bring the same thing—a pie—but rarely to the same house. One year an invitation leads to a cozy circle of contemporaries and the surprising warmth of friends-as-family; another year at a different home, the gettogether is nothing more than a pleasant potluck with three kinds of stuffing, topical conversation, and a hike in the woods afterward for those not watching the game. One of the oddest Thanksgivings thus far, though certainly not the worst, was a makeshift meal in San Francisco’s Cow Palace, a cavernous space usually used for livestock expos. Thanksgiving night, the night before the Dickens Fair opened, those of us who were vendors rushed to finish our Victorian booths. Just before midnight, the owner of one of the food booths under construction beckoned us into a back room. We put down our staple guns and hammers and joined him for a magnificent meal: turkey, garlicky mashed potatoes, a sweet potato pie with whipped cream that he’d brought from home. All of the foil serving pans were arranged on a long table covered with a cloth and set with votive candles. We said grace together, holding hands, before we picked up plastic forks and filled up our paper plates. Somehow this small communion, along with the wine and candlelight, transformed our surroundings: a freezing concrete building permeated by a powerful bovine odor left over from the rodeo held there a couple of weeks prior. The Thanksgiving I somehow remember best was spent at my writer friend Fran’s house near the San Francisco shoreline. Fog had swept in off the water early in the afternoon, cloaking the streets in a mysterious, wintery veil. Fran’s husband welcomed me and ushered me into the large dining room, where a group of people I’d never met were already seated, passing spiced pecans and wine back and forth. The room was light, filled with plants and artwork. I took my seat and enjoyed listening to all the delicious conversations bubbling up around me. Most of the guests were older than me, a motley group of artists, writers and their spouses. I didn’t even try to remember all the names once we’d been introduced, but I liked being among them. One woman in particular caught my gaze. She sat on the opposite side of the table from me, dressed in almost-edible colors—an avocado scarf, a watermelon-colored blouse, a cloche hat the color of raspberries. She was smiling at two people trying to talk to her at once, and her expression was weary and radiant at the same time. Throughout the course of the meal, the shrimp or the almond tart were passed to her before anyone else. Conversations were angled to include her. “Wouldn’t you agree, Jillian?” “Jillian, remember when Steve lost his car near the St. Francis?” I supposed she must be someone mildly famous, though I hadn’t caught her last name. She said little, but looked over at me a few times during the meal and grinned. I was struck by how wise and kind her eyes were, how thin her wrist was as she lifted her dessert fork. When most of the dishes had been cleared from the table, someone brought a guitar from a back bedroom, and all of us sang except Jillian, who listened with rapt attention to the lovely harmonies we managed on “Amazing Grace” and “Norwegian Wood.” A warm fire crackled and popped in the living room beyond, but there was a different kind of warmth here in our midst. No one seemed to want to stir from the table. A tangible feeling of love seemed to be swirling around the room, connecting us and anchoring us. The guitarist played a soft instrumental, lulling us into quiet. This must be what real family feels like, I remember thinking. Nothing is missing. A long while later, when we finally pushed back the chairs to migrate toward the fireplace, I realized Jillian couldn’t stand up on her own. In fact, she said she needed to go lie down, and a couple of the men supported her gently as she made her way out of the room and down the hall, the cloche hat slipping to one side of her tired face. When I went to help Fran wrap up the leftover turkey and make coffee, she told me that Jillian wasn’t famous in the least; she was a talented, marvelous friend whose ovarian cancer was past treatment. This would be her last Thanksgiving, as the others in the group well knew. At evening’s end, I made my way alone through the darkness a couple of blocks down to where I’d parked my car. Wisps of fog curled over and around the streetlights, and the world felt muted and blessed. I never saw Jillian again, though sometimes I imagine I see her wise face in a slice of winter moon— glowing, grateful for even a short stay in the night sky. Jonathan Sanchez books literary talent. “The nature of books is that they live—not forever, but for a long time,” said the owner of Blue Bicycle Books, a store for used, local and rare reading material. On his own time, Jonathan’s getting kids hooked on books with a writing workshop at Haut Gap Middle School and with the third annual YALLFest, the Young Adult Book Festival on November 9. The one-day affair is free (with a few ticketed events) and boasts book signings, presentations and a YA Smackdown Finale with 50 featured authors facing off in a storytelling competition. “It’s amazing to see the appreciation people have for this and how the community comes together to build something.” He expects a crowd of about 3,000, with famous faces including bestselling author Veronica Roth. And whether it’s the day of YALLFest or just another workday, he says: “I’m amongst a lot of really brilliant and talented women. It doesn’t matter if it’s the readers or the writers.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “It’s interesting, the idea of having more options.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “I love how it’s very punchy.” 46 novemberw2013 skirt!magazine

The state of the babies’ clothes lets me know who has been fed. Every shirt in the place is a mess. Mission accomplished.
F
Chels Knorr
eeding time starts at 5am. Or should I say, the porridge better be ready by then, or else 44 crying babies will create mayhem, though they likely will anyway. This is not my first time in this Tanzanian orphanage, up the dusty brick steps or through the latchless door. And it is not the first time this place has made me contemplate motherhood and opportunity and injustice. But it is supper, and there is no time to consider these things now. I step into the laundry room and wade past threefoot-high piles of white onesies ready to be bleached and hung on the outdoor clotheslines. Footie pajamas hang over the sides of baskets, drying from bed-wetters the night before. Endless cycles tumble—normal, cold, spin, rinse. Through the mountains of clothes and just past the stale scent of powder detergent and urine, un-potty-trained toddlers blab in clumsy Swahili. They squirm and beg for attention and cry for the food they know is coming. The tables each have semi-circular cutouts like a first-grade classroom’s reading table. Five holes in each wooden slab hold hanging highchairs. I fill the seats, one by one. Babies bang on the tables and yammer to each other. Some cry and scream, and they open their mouths wide. Uvulae warbling. Waiting. Two nannies carry out pizzapan-sized trays boasting bowls of maize mush cooked in a pot so large you could fall in. I grab two bright bowls and position myself in the vacant cutout. Ready. Aim. The nannies shovel huge dollops of porridge into the babies’ mouths. They stir to let off steam. I work slower than the nannies, focused on getting the spoon to their mouths with some semblance of grace, careful not to pile too much porridge onto the spoon, careful of the temperature, careful not to spill. But three babies in, I have thick white sludge all over my clothes and the kids sport the same. So long as no one sees, I use the spoon to scoop the porridge off their clothes and into their mouths. They guzzle it down, taking only partial breaths in between bites. I move to the other side of the room where the smaller babies who cannot sit up by themselves lie on a blanket. I pick up Hidaya, who stares at me with her brown beady eyes. The nannies always dress her in yellow. I spoon the porridge into her mouth, and the mush catches on her pursed lips. I wonder if she knows about her mother. Her cry sounds like she does. I sense the never-ending drudgery of the institutional routine all around me. This is work and life in orphanages, but what else do you do with this many mouths to feed?
Next is Paul. After picking him up, I realize too late that he has peed through his cloth diaper and it has leaked onto me. The two-year-old is the size of a six-month-old. No one knows why. I hold him longer than it takes to feed him because he locks eyes with me and I can’t, in good conscience, put him down. Rosie, who has just learned to crawl, has found the dollop of porridge on the tile floor and has inched under my legs to lick it off the ground. I can’t decide if she is still hungry or just acting like a kid. I stop her, though with less urgency than I should, and look around the room. The state of the babies’ clothes lets me know who has been fed. Every shirt in the place is a mess. Mission accomplished. And then we start over. We perch a baby on each hip and waltz them into the changing room. We add to the piles of laundry. I cringe with every heavy diaper, with every breath. Despite the gasping and the pinching of noses, we carry the babies out with clean faces and clean diapers, content for the moment. They kick in their footie pajamas, and those who can walk play as their feet stick to the floor. They become clingy. The babies want to snuggle, and I oblige without question, holding Lynnette as she tries so hard to keep her eyes open. I pick up one tired child and carry him to his bed. I kiss his forehead. Another tries to climb the rail on the outside of his crib to get in. I pick him up to help and the two talk to each other in between the bars of their cribs, as heavy eyelids overtake their gibberish conversation. The six older kids get to stay up a little later. Raman tries to reach the itchy zipper on her pajamas and cries until I hand her a slippery cucumber, which she inhales. The kids sit in a circle snacking as another volunteer reads them a book about the alphabet. Clinton, a ball of charisma, climbs into my lap. He has one girl’s Mary Jane shoe over the left foot of his pajamas. He doesn’t like cucumbers and asks for a biscuit instead. No luck. We put them to bed with full tummies. Forty-four tired children dart in and out of sleep, as the nannies continue to clamor in the kitchen over a few extra cucumbers and a sink of dirty dishes. I leave the orphanage, back past the piles of laundry and the whirring washing machines. I walk to my hut just down the path with a flashlight in hand. I am exhausted and figure I should eat some dinner myself. Glaring into the blinding refrigerator light, I try to devise a strategy to sneak Clinton a biscuit tomorrow evening. My days find meaning in dirty hands pulling a little red wagon handle and watching babies stare at monkeys swinging from the trees outside. These 44 curious beings change me every day. I think there might be leftovers from last night’s lentils on the top shelf behind the milk, but I decide to go straight to bed instead. I’ve never felt better fed.

MY FAVORITE DISH. IN THE HOUSE
Duck confit, goat cheese potato croquette, butter-poached mushrooms and bacongrape emulsion.
Grilled jerk chicken with roasted sweet potato, squash and zucchini topped with pineapple salsa Blackened shrimp with warm white cornbread, tomato fondue, field pea vinaigrette
“I put this dish on the menu two years ago, and it quickly became a guest favorite. It’s my favorite because I struggled with the duck confit—my original concepts were too contrived. If I had kept it simple initially, I would have nailed it!”
“Simple and approachable was my goal...with four simple Southern ingredients, I created a dish that soothes the soul as a refined home-cooked meal.”
Aaron Lemieux 39 Rue de Jean
Ramon Taimanglo Amen Street Fish and Raw Bar
“My inspiration for this dish is the island of Antigua. The jerk chicken delivers the exotic spices and succulent flavors originally found in the island’s remarkable culture.” Ellis Grossman Black Bean Co.

Wow!
There are approximately 49 million bubbles in a standard sized bottle of Champagne.
Give cranberries a makeover on Thanksgiving by serving a dip made with Wensleydale & Cranberries cheese during the games. It’s easy but elegant, and the NFL fans will eat it up. Sure, it goes with beer, but put a little black dress on the day by also serving Champagne along with The Modern Cocktail’s Champagne Toppers in flavors like Grapefruit Bellini, Mango Mimosa, Raspberry Bellini, Mandarin Mimosa, and Blood Orange Mimosa.
8 oz Greek yogurt 4 oz Wensleydale & Cranberries cheese 1 tbsp snipped chives Ground black pepper Crumble cheese into yogurt, add chives and fresh pepper to taste.

“When are you ever going to make Buche de Noel with Meringue Mushrooms?”
M
Lorrie Goldin
y daughter Ally says I’m a hoarder. She may have a point. As I search the cupboards for a spanakopita recipe gone missing, hundreds of loose clippings cascade to the floor. Not one is from my mother. She’s bequeathed many wonderful things, but heirloom recipes and a deft hand in the kitchen are not among them. What tumbled from my mother’s cupboards were boxes of Cheez-Its and Ring-Dings. Mostly they brought private relief from the black hole of suburban housewifery. But every afternoon when I came home from school, my mother shared her stash while I shared the ins and outs of the day. I loved licking the salty orange dust from my fingertips and how the glazed chocolate shell yielded to the cake’s soft interior. Since my mother’s cooking skills were limited to sprinkling onion soup mix atop a cheap cut of beef, most of my childhood meals came from a box. We had almost no cookbooks. Just an ancient Fannie Farmer and a pristine Mastering the Art of French Cooking, the latter a gift from my father laden with hope and rebuke. One prized paperback summed up my mother’s culinary philosophy: Peg Bracken’s I Hate to Cook Book. But I loved to cook, or at least to experiment, and my mother loved to indulge my whims. Perhaps hoping to someday palm off the task of feeding us night after unending night, she never minded the spills on the counter or the mess of bowls in the sink. My first made-from-scratch cake had the heft and taste of a hockey puck. Yet my mother and I delighted in the rainbow frosting magically created from just four squeeze bottles of food coloring. By high school, I had graduated to fancy-dress dinner parties for my friends featuring Boeuf Bourguignon. Julia Child was at last put to good use. Still mastering the art of baking, I also served an inedible Apple Harvest Cake as cloying as marshmallow fluff. I have been collecting recipes ever since, and am renowned for my cakes: chocolate-espresso torts, lemon bundts that pucker the mouth into permanent ecstasy, an apple-walnut cake that lays to rest the ghastly sweet ghost of its predecessor. My daughter and I have continued the ritual of sharing gossip and snacks in the kitchen, with one crucial difference: From the time Ally could stand, she’s been folding wet ingredients into dry, absorbing my preference for food made from scratch. Once she even pulverized Cheez-Its, reconstituted the crumbs with water, and baked the soggy mass in a quest for home-baked goodness. When Ally left for college, I hand-copied her favorite recipes into a scrapbook. Like my mother, I enjoy the fruits of my encouragement—and of Ally’s labor. She gladly cooks for us every time she’s home. Ally has a lot of recipes to choose from: Joy of Cooking competes for shelf space with whole volumes dedicated to soup, chicken, pasta, chocolate, every world cuisine and passing food fad. Weight Watchers and vegetarian cookbooks stand ready in case I ever follow through on my good intentions.
But the books are nothing compared to big manila envelopes stuffed with recipes culled from magazines, newspapers, and the mothers of ex-boyfriends. So I’ve hired my daughter, who’s looking to earn some extra cash between college and a real job, to tame the mess. True to her generation, Ally seeks a technological fix. “Haven’t you heard of the internet?” she asks. I have. But online browsing can’t compete with sitting down surrounded by stacks of books and clippings to plan a dinner party, a week’s menus, or how to use the odds and ends at the back of the fridge. Ally is right, though: It’s gotten out of hand. So I set her up with scissors, double-stick tape, and notebooks to organize my recipes, most of which I’ve never tried. Like every hoarder, I hold out hope that someday I’ll put everything to use. “When are you ever going to make Buche de Noel with Meringue Mushrooms?” Ally inquires. I swear that this year will be different from Christmases past. But Ally lacks faith that my plans for show-stopper desserts will no longer fall victim to lastminute wrapping. Nor does she appreciate the value of multiples. Otherwise, she wouldn’t bother asking, “Do you really need another recipe for dal?” Hmmm. Letting go is hard, but I suppose not. One for the “Discard” pile. “How many different kinds of chocolate cake do you plan to bake?” Ally persists. All of them. Chocolate has its own special “Keep” pile. Now I get why hoarders go psychotic when well-intentioned relatives trick them into leaving the house, then move in with dumpsters. Since Ally clearly cannot be trusted with sorting, I must discern my own treasure from trash. Sifting through 40 years’ worth of recipes is like an archeological dig. Excavating the layers uncovers a civilization once heedless of time and cholesterol—1 cup heavy cream, ½ pound grated cheddar, ½ pound ham, just to make a noodle casserole. Or Duck Gallantine, which involves boning a duck and rendering fat for many hours. I have rendered a lot of fat in my life, and most of it is on my hips. I prefer a faster route, via scrumptious chocolate layer bars. The dig also reveals an era of unexecuted dinner parties that would have led to insurrection by Downton Abbey’s kitchen staff: Roast Saddle of Veal with Mushroom Sauce for 12; Ham Braised in Port with Brown-Sugar Crust for 20. My early browsing exposes a period of sheer fantasy: enough time and money, matching china and crystal, and a couple of Masterpiece cooks on loan from the BBC. This bygone epoch is overlaid by the reality of young family life, with lots of hidden-vegetable recipes. Next comes the modern era of chicken every-whichway and grains previously known only to ancient Incas. Finally I am ready to turn over the clippings that have escaped the recycling bin. Ally sets to work as I hover nearby to make sure she doesn’t jettison my multiple cheesecake recipes. Now we are cooking! In no time at all, Ally has brought order from chaos. She is also salivating. “Let’s make Portobello Bourguignon!” she exclaims, echoing my youthful pick with a vegetarian version sure to win over Julia Child. And so we do, working side by side, peeling, chopping, sharing the ins and outs of the day. I imagine my mother, Ring Ding in one hand, saluting us with a box of Cheez-Its in the other.

Holiday Reminders Get over it… you will gain weight. Days will be spent planning a Bon Appétit turkey. But everyone will want canned cranberry sauce. Someone will be drunk by halftime. Don’t come out or break up during dinner. Sit at the children’s table—it’s safer. But don’t criticize your sister’s children. Stay at a hotel instead of home sweet home. Family-drama tweets are sweet revenge. If all else fails, there’s always Cancun for Christmas.

alking into the Lowcountry Food Bank for the first time was overwhelming. Its state-of-the-art kitchen could rival a kitchen in any of Charleston’s premier restaurants. Apprentices and volunteers were bustling about putting the finishing touches on meals that were to be shipped out that day. Not only was it a well-oiled operation, but you could see the look of accomplishment in volunteers’ faces who come from all walks of life. My experience did not go without me shedding a tear or two. The programs at Lowcountry Food Bank are the epitome of full-circle giving: Donations to the food bank allow meals to be donated throughout the community. Then, through their Food Works program, others are able to build new careers. Those people, in turn, give back by volunteering. That’s a lot of giving back!

November's Thankful Heart:
2
November Challenge:
Let the festivities begin! How fitting is it that a season filled with giving, receiving, and a whole lot of good cheer, begins with an observance of all of the reasons we have to be thankful? I dig it.
This time of year, a lot of us are gearing up to have our space invaded‌ err.. I mean occupied by loved ones. As loved as these ones may be, it can certainly be trying to play hostess. Let's all vow to go into this season expectation-less, okay? If at the end of the day, your guests are fed and your family still likes each other, you've done a fabulous job!

Pam Rector puts dinner on your table. The seafood industry became a piece of Pam’s love story when her husband tied his shrimp boat at her dad’s dock back in high school. “I always said I wouldn’t marry a shrimper because you have to move around. Well, guess what?” They’ve been happily married for 47 years and own Geechie Seafood in Mt. Pleasant. Bubba works the boat and Pam spends her morning selling shrimp from their open-air retail shed before heading home for management duties. “We get to see all the sights of Shem Creek.” She has also seen the switch from highly commercialized waters to a smaller share of shrimp boats. “It’s dying out. There’s not going to be shrimp forever.” While the shrimp are still here, she’ll take them fried, but her favorite sight is “the beauty of them when they first come in and they’re so shiny and gray.”

Ericka Kalinowski drives a sweet ride. The owner of Dulce Truck is getting the Holy City high—on sugar. “Sugar just makes people happy.” She serves it Southern-style as sweet iced teas with leaves sourced from Charleston Tea Plantation—Blueberry Basil Green Tea and Lemon Lavender Black Tea are the most sought after—as well as bakery-style with cookies, bars, cakes and more. Ericka started driving the truck in July 2012 and dubbed it “Dulce,” which is “sweet” in Spanish, to celebrate her family’s Panamanian origin. “It’s my own thing. It’s something different than just opening my own bakery.” You can find her parked at corporate and community events or catering and customizing desserts for weddings, birthdays and various parties. This month, she’ll be at the Blessing of the Vine and Jail Break. And in case it gets colder, she’s breaking out the flavored hot cocoas. “It doesn’t matter how big or small it is—that little bit of sweetness brings pleasure to everybody.”

Marie Stitt has educated taste buds. Marie attributes her first taste of wine at age four to her Francophile/restaurateur father, Frank Stitt. Fast-forward about 20 years, and she’s working in brand development for Grassroots Wine wholesalers, which supports small, family-owned producers. “It’s something that has been in my blood forever, this idea of food and eating well and really respecting where that food comes from.” She maintained that mindset by studying diverse wine terroirs while working in Napa Valley and living in Europe. Since settling back in Charleston, Marie has helped pack her company’s portfolio with place-driven winegrowers from every major wine region on the planet. While establishing her own place in the production landscape, she’s noticed that women are definitely still in the minority among sommeliers and wine makers. “But all of that is changing!” she says.

I’ve been sucked in by Nowness.com, which features videos and photos on food, fashion, culture, beauty, music and more. I’ve found things like a short interview with one of my heroes, Peter Beard, and American Autumn, a parody of a Woody Allen movie acted by elementary school kids. It’s defies easy description but keeps you coming back for more.
I’ve been fascinated lately with kintsukuroi, the Japanese art of fixing cracks in pottery with gold lacquer and regarding the resulting piece as more beautiful for having been broken. I’ve always thought of my surgery scars as badges of courage, so why not the life scars left behind that no one can see? Filling in the pain with rivers of gold.
