The grocery store is packed, you just want five sweet potatoes, and the magazine covers in the checkout line say you only need 10 tips to handle holiday stress. What you need is a shorter line. So many families, so little time. Survive the season. Crash and burn out. Recover. Repeat. This season, remember that nothing is so delicious as the quiet moments between chaos. Let go where you are able, make being kind more important than being right. Give more, ask less. Bring a baker’s dozen. Less handheld, more hand-holding.These are the moments you’ll search for later...keep them in your mental Instagram. Taste is a time machine and you can order from the secret menu. Have a sweet tooth for life. Eat it up with a fancy spoon. Press pause on your sense memory, remember that comfort food is always the flavor of love. May you discover how sweet it is to taste the past and feast with your heart. May you always dive into what makes your mouth water. May your glass always be half full, and raised in a toast. Enjoy. Love. Repeat.

Single in Charleston? Michelle is an attractive, 40-something professional woman. Recently divorced, she’s decided it’s time to meet new people. Excited for a night on the town, early Saturday night Michelle calls up a few of her girlfriends to make plans. The first call is Jill, married with two kids. “Sorry, Michelle,” she says, “I am just so exhausted from work this week! Thanks, but I’m settling in for a quiet night with the husband.” Undeterred, Michelle makes a second call to her old college friend, Anna. Anna says she would go out but these days she is caring for her elderly mother and cannot afford the expense of an adult sitter. Okay, Michelle thinks, one more try – Sarah! Sarah is sure to be up for it because she is also divorced and her children are teenagers. But once again, “I’d love to, but both girls are home tonight and I haven’t spent much time with them.”

It occurs to Michelle just how much things have changed in the dating scene. Her friends have moved on and going out just isn’t the same as it was in her 20s. She pours herself a glass of wine and wonders how she’ll ever meet someone.

Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hays of CharlestonSinglesNetwork.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect and form REAL relationships.

That’s why so many singles contact CharlestonSinglesNetwork.com Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one of the area’s oldest and largest introduction services, from Savannah and Hilton Head to Charleston, Jacksonville and beyond.

Photographed at the Pence’s Liquor & Wine, 334 East Bay Street.

He’s So Original | Scott Newitt is known as “The Firefly Guy.”

The nickname fits, considering his passion for his product. Scott has been in the liquor business for 25 years, starting his career at Gallo Winery right out of college at LSU. The Louisiana native has adopted Charleston as his hometown and has been building what he calls his “family business” with Firefly Vodka since its launch in the early 2000s. Along with partner Jim Irvin, the company launched its flagship Sweet Tea Vodka, and in August of 2008 they sold 8,000 cases of the spirit in South Carolina alone, more than national brand Absolut. The latest from Firefly? Moonshine. It’s flying off the shelves in flavors like Apple Pie, Caramel, Peach and the straight-up White Lightning. Scott lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Trish, and their kids Drew, Peter and Patsy. In his spare time, he plays drums in the 17 South Bluegrass Band. During football season, he can usually be found cooking up a big batch of NOLA-style gumbo on game days, served with Firefly’s White Lightning and bourbon, of course!

Chari Skinner loves to play with her food.

“That’s the best part about our business,” says Chari. Her gustatory game began when she learned to make pasta as a child in an Italian-influenced kitchen. “Going back to the roots of Italian cuisine is turning nothing into this beautiful thing.” As Executive Chef at Union Provisions, she’s turning fall meals into feasts filled with warmer, heavier foods including whole rabbit prepared three ways, plus flatbread and gnocchi, which she says is “like playing with Play-Doh.” Before sliding into the Charleston scene, her playgrounds were Scottsdale Culinary Institute in Arizona and The Lodge at Koele in Hawaii, where she chased after bright pops of fresh produce. “You eat with your eyes first.” She’s also spied plenty of women popping up in her industry, collaborating in kitchens with men. “We’re starting to step up and say: ‘We’re going to take this by storm.’”

Karalee Fallert is a culinary community champion.

You may not know her name, but you know her restaurants if you’ve been in Charleston for more than five minutes. Karalee Fallert is the creative spark behind the Holy City’s most popular eateries for the past decade, including Raval, Monza, Taco Boy, The Royal American and, just this year, Lee Lee’s Hot Kitchen and The Park Cafe. Restaurants are her “thing,” but her heart is in the community. Co-founder of The Green Heart Project, an organization that creates urban gardens and educational programs at local schools, Karalee says her focus has always been on community. “Even if you don’t have kids in public schools, the childhood obesity epidemic affects where you live. We’re raising the next generation, and we want them to be healthy.” Karalee loves working with kids in schools “because you see their excitement first-hand. When they grow their own food, they’re excited to cook with it and eat it.” And that includes kale, by the way. See more about the organization and find out how you can get involved at GreenHeartSC.org.

Victoria Neikirk is a master of the fresh catch.

You’ll see her in the upcoming season of “Chopped” on the Food Network (calves eyeballs is the only hint we’ll give), but Executive Chef VIctoria Neikirk has been a fixture in the kitchen at Pearlz for a little more than four years now. Her background is a mix of continent-hopping culinary adventures and private dining for celebs like Spike Lee and Beyonce, but after 30 years in NYC, she hopped on her motorcycle and headed south, landing in Charleston to stay for a while. “As soon as I drove over the Ravenel Bridge, I felt like I was home,” says Victoria. She broke her lease in New York and the rest is history. She’s the talent behind the tasty small plates (and the rest of the menu) at Pearlz. Don’t miss their “Evening of Red” on January 29, a five-course meal with wine pairings, plus proceeds benefit local charities. “I love the company behind Pearlz,” says Victoria. “They feed hundreds of people every holiday season and I like being part of that.”

Cameron and Mark have begun cooking together. A lot. Shiny machinery and gratuitous gadgets have cluttered our kitchen. Too much, if you ask me. New mixers, pasta machines and their first cousins clog our counters. Team “Father & Son” has been on a bender. When asked if this equipment is necessary, I get the attitude Chef Ramsey reserves for ne’er do well chefs. These newfound cooking projects (and the mess that ensues), have invaded my justfor-show kitchen, their novelty long gone. Simply put, Mark and Cameron have surpassed their quota for new recipes.
