November is the month we crave community and culinary togetherness. We buy a too-big turkey just to have sandwiches and leftover gravy the day after Thanksgiving. We cut out recipes for dinner from scratch, but deep-down we yearn for jellied cranberry sauce and pumpkin filling from a can. We hunger for a seat at a dining-room table filled

with Extended Family, eccentric friends and occasional strangers. We cross our fingers that this will be the year everyone behaves and no one leaves the table in tears. We binge on blessings and green-bean casserole,

Cornbread Dressing and cornucopias, feasts and football. And when it’s done, we’ll fold up the crepe-paper turkeys and blow out the Pilgrim candles and swear on the wishbone that next year we’ll eat out. Until it’s time to do it again. Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Ali Douglass

“Strange to see how a good dinner and feasting reconciles everybody.” Samuel Pepys

When it comes to your mortgage,

TrustUs.

Matt does.

After a near-paralyzing game on the college basketball court, Matt was given a devastating diagnosis: ruptured discs, pinched nerves and several torn muscles. Painkillers, bed rest and appointment after Dr. Matthew Murrin DC, BSc Kin, CFC, CEP, PFLC ChiropracticUSA 1004 Anna Knapp Blvd. Mt. Pleasant chiropracticusasc.com

appointment with physicians left Matt dejected – until he met with a chiropractor. “He told me he’d help me play ball and run again. He said I wouldn’t need surgery and I would likely stop medication.” Matt’s astonishment at the successful outcome led him to decline his med school acceptance and instead apply to chiropractic school. Although he’s originally from Newfoundland, Matt flew south and made a permanent nest here. “It’s paradise – I have a dream career, phenomenal patients and staff, and great friends.” With his practice located in Mount Pleasant, Matt didn’t have to look far to find someone to adjust his mortgage, and he found that Lucey Mortgage was anything but a pain in the neck. “Working with Lorcan Lucey was an absolute pleasure. I was so impressed at how quickly I was able to get a loan quote, a rate, and a confirmation. For my next home or vacation home I will be going through Lucey Mortgage, no questions asked.”

work. Although I’ve forgotten how to dress for cold weather (At some point there are socks involved, right?), I’ll never forget how much I love a month centered on friends, family and food. In Charleston, a town of cuisine queens, we had trouble narrowing down who would fit The Crave Issue. A sticky, sweet and spicy sauce, a stockroom of fresh foods, and the perkiest beer gal we ever did meet round out our issue of divine dishes and locavore loves. From Robin, whose mix of sass and sweet matches her slatherin’ sauces, to Sara, who is literally the only person separating the fields from your feast, and Morgan, who made us sit down and drink in the middle of the day (few complaints from myself or Alice, our photographer!), we’re serving up a perfect mix of authentically delicious dames. November is a month of overindulgence, whether it’s cousin-overload or carb-overload, so escape the din and sit down with our Crave Issue. We hope you’ll savor every page.

“Does anyone mind if I take the bowls?”

Laura Templeton

36  novemberw2012

charleston.skirt.com

Knitting to Safety

M

y fascination with the mixing bowls started early. These particular bowls aren’t Italian glass or English porcelain or handcrafted pottery. They’re just ordinary Pyrex. My grandmother gave them to my mother in the 1940s, soon after my parents married. The four party-colored bowls nest one inside the other: yellow, green, red, blue. Their smooth, rounded insides are milky white. They’ve never been in a dishwasher, and their colors after 70 years remain glossy and vibrant as oil paint. There’s a childlike, post-war optimism to the bowls’ design that appeals to me. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my mother prepare food in these bowls. In the large lemon-yellow bowl, she made birthday cakes, cornbread dressing and, when she entertained, homemade chicken salad. The mixing bowl turned into a serving bowl for salted popcorn, offered straight from the pressure cooker. The green bowl held brownie and biscuit dough; the red, gravy or scrambled eggs on Saturday mornings; the blue, creamed peas or sugared peaches in the summer. My mother used the bowls every day and then carefully washed them by hand and put them away. I suspect that it wasn’t until her mother died in 1974 that the bowls began to gather meaning, to become, by use and perhaps intent, more than bowls. They began their evolution into sacred objects. Traditionally, bowls symbolize the power of the present, not the past. To a Buddhist monk, an alms bowl is precious. It is steeped in legend, the ultimate symbol of non-attachment to outcomes. A high degree of letting go is required to approach each day with an empty bowl, not knowing with what (if anything) fate, loved ones and community will fill. Adding to the alms bowl sustains the monk and allows him to continue in his spiritual pursuits, much as my mother’s contributions nourished our bodies and souls, allowing us to grow up and away from her. Shortly after my mother died, my father opted to move to an assistedliving facility. My brothers and I gathered to sort through my parents’ belongings, a depressing task that I’d dreaded for weeks. I’d been close to my mother. She’d died suddenly, and I clung to memories of her that were as comfortable and soothing as old clothes. The thought of parting with anything that had belonged to her was painful, but I was determined to be generous that day, to relinquish what I didn’t need. Besides, there was only one thing of my mother’s that I really, soul-deeply cared about having: the mixing bowls. My niece, newly married, was thrilled when we told her she could have the mahogany sideboard and the rice bed. My mother’s well-thumbed Bible found a home with my oldest brother. I sneaked in my all-important question while everyone busily packed books and newspaper-wrapped bric-a-brac. “Does anyone mind if I take the bowls?” “What bowls?” My brothers, clueless, paused to stare at me. My college-professor sister-in-law remained silent. She rarely cooks, and I’m not convinced she knows the purpose of mixing bowls. Perhaps she was afraid if she took them, someone might ask her to use them. Or maybe she was just wise enough to know how important they were to me. My niece smiled. She understood the unspoken desire behind my question. “You should have them,” she said. I resisted my husband’s offer to pack the bowls and held them in my lap on the drive home. I couldn’t bear the thought of their getting chipped or broken. For 12 motherless years now, the bowls have lived in my kitchen. I use them for much the same things as my mother, though the cake batter is often from a box, and biscuits are made with an unfortunate infrequency, my being more apt to create fiction from scratch than food. I continue to hand-wash them, the feel of cool glass a tangible connection to my mother, my grandmother and my past. I speculate about where the bowls will pass next—to a future daughterin-law, granddaughter, or perhaps to my niece’s daughter. They must go to someone who understands the ritual: someone who can use them to remember her past, to create a better future and, most importantly, to become a container for an open, whole, meaningful present.

MY CHARLESTON NOVEMBER

.

November. It’s easy for autumn to feel non-existent here in Charleston, with our marathon summers and bright green trees. But by the time November rolls around, days become shorter, ciders and hot toddies are consumed with regularity, and it’s impossible to walk down King Street without being reminded that the holidays are right around the corner. Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays that focuses on what truly matters—family, friends, and food. It’s a day that evokes only the most sentimental (and gracious) emotions, and I can’t think of a better place to spend it than Charleston.

The girls of Mac and Murphy share a shop, a neighborhood, and have their morning coffee together. It’s quite the perfect partnership.

Artist Hirona Matsuda exploring her neighborhood on Charleston’s East side. Billy Reid has the most gorgeous fall colors and fabrics.

A noodle bowl and Westbrook at Two Boroughs Larder — the epitome of fall comfort food.

Charleston is full of such passionate, creative, talented people. Chefs, shop owners, artists, and so on—I’m constantly inspired by the people around me.

Bertha’s Kitchen is the best-kept secret with to-die-for mac and cheese. 38

Hudson Valley Getaway

this month I love

Since we don’t get to experience the full potential of the season, fall is the perfect time for a Northern getaway. My boyfriend and I recently escaped to the Hudson Valley for a weekend, and being surrounded by such stunning fall foliage felt like a novelty to say the least. The Hudson Valley, with its yellow, orange, red, and magenta covered trees, is a sight to behold.

1. Apple cider and roasted dates after dinner. 2. Low-key gatherings with family and friends. 3.Shorter days and cozier nights. 4. Incorporating sweet potatoes into every dish. 5. Anthropologie (finally) coming to Charleston. 6. Incredible seasonal produce at the new Blackbird Market. 7. Pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pancakes.... 8. Buying holiday cards. 9. Scuppernongs and Muscadines. 10. Thanksgiving!

On and off the beaten path, gorgeous scenery surrounds.

Taking day trips my favorite way to discover new places.

It’s impossible not to stop every few miles and admire the beauty.

Fall in the Hudson Valley: ideal.

“With November comes Thanksgiving, and with Thanksgiving comes a renewed sense of gratitude. It’s easy to take the things— and people—we love the most for granted. But the holiday season is a welcomed reminder to dismiss the trivialities of everyday life and and cherish those around you.”

He’s So Original

Blake Vaigneur is making a sole mate for you. As a shoe buyer for Copper Penny, Blake had his foot in the right door even though customers were sometimes looking for a different fit. “Shoppers would tell me what they were looking for, but couldn’t find.” So Blake set to work crafting the shoes his clients craved, dubbing the line Rowen: “They were an instant hit. Other retailers would call and ask us where to buy them, so I decided to develop a brand we could sell to other stores.” And the other stores haven’t stopped calling. Besides being sold online and in boutiques, they’ve been picked up by Piperlime too. And their latest order comes with sweet recognition—a coveted spot in Belk’s Southern Designer Showcase, meaning Spring 2013 styles have an even wider audience. What do you like about wearing a skirt? “I love that I finally get to show off my legs.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “The skirt! girls always know what’s going on around town—whether it’s new restaurant openings, shops, or events I need to check out.”

SKIRT! IN THE KITCHEN NOVEMBER

Kristin Kuhlke Cobb

Cupcake King Street, Charleston • Belle Hall in Mt Pleasant 853.8181 • 856.7080 • freshcupcakes.com

What is the best compliment a customer ever paid you?

“This was twice as good as the next-best cupcake

I’ve ever had.”

What are your words to live by? Make Life Sweet.

How do you unwind after a long day? I love to be with my family and a glass of wine.

What cupcakes can you can get any day? Vanilla, vanilla with chocolate, chocolate, black and white, and red velvet.

How do you order cake pops or mini and mega cupcakes? Just give us a call a day ahead of time.

What time does your alarm clock go off? When the baby wakes up—6:30 these days.

Newest cupcake creation? Chocolate Monkey. It’s ridiculous.

What’s a good cupcake for Thanksgiving? Banana pudding would be a good addition.

What’s the largest order of cupcakes you’ve ever had so far? 1000 cupcakes for a big political event. What are some cupcake pairings for dessert? I think red wine is great with our death by chocolate cupcake and of course champagne with our strawberry or almond cupcake is a nice treat! How do you choose new flavors? We have monthly managers’ meetings and everyone brings new flavors to try. Then we try them all and decide what actually makes the menu. What have youlearned about running a specialty food business? The importance of good customer service and consistency. It’s not just about having a great cupcake—it’s about the experience for the customer, from the look, feel and smell of the bakery right down to the packaging.

Shoes I wear in the kitchen: Pink Converse sneakers. What are the best ways to store cupcakes that you can’t finish? In an airtight container, or freeze them, but I say just make some room and eat them! What are some difficult-to-buy ingredients? Vanilla beans—we go through a lot of them because we put them in our vanilla icing. All of our ingredients are very important to the taste of the cakes and icing. We have tried so many different cocoa powders to get the taste we want, we can’t just substitute anything. We use one brand of caramel syrup in our caramel icing but drizzle cakes with a different brand—we have a very long ingredient list—right down to the way we top the cupcakes. Are the holidays your busiest time for special orders? The holidays are getting busy with corporate gifting. This year we’ll have a holiday flavors package of assorted minis on the menu. This way you can send your friends, clients and co-workers a fresh baked and local sweet treat and we will deliver them right to their door. What’s a cupcake you’ve thought about introducing but changed your mind? One of the girls made a chicken wing cupcake for a ball game. We’ve thought about doing savory cakes but would have a hard time selling them on a daily basis.

Cupcakes bakeries on your bucket list: Best-selling cupcake? Red velvet.

What’s your dream party to cater? The Food Network Christmas Party.

Most creative-looking cupcake? Caramel apple or samoa.

Best seasonal cupcake? Pumpkin—fall, hot chocolate—winter, key lime—summer.

E! E R F NO N E T G LUT

I miss the old days when food was good and people were bad, not the other way around.

N

Stacy Appel

ovember has descended, with trees bare as scarecrows and cool air fragrant with wood-smoke. On my nightly walk, I catch a whiff of a neighbor’s dinner preparations on the next block over—something delicious, with onions and potatoes frying, maybe a roast. I don’t know them at all but I’d love to drop by, right this minute, for a meal. “What’s for dessert?” I’ll ask them. “Will there be bread, by any chance, or maybe some pasta?” I will look at them, tears welling up in the corners of my eyes, and they will gaze at me with sudden tenderness. “Pull up a chair,” they’ll say. “We really must insist.” The sorry part about November, my birthday month, is that none of my friends eat gluten any more, or even carbohydrates. Just whispering the word “dessert” is grounds for dismissal from further meal outings. No one I know would consider making coffee or sharing a Caesar or eating cheese these days, since caffeine is out of bounds and croutons have gluten, and dairy is, well, very, very bad. I’m not at all sure how Thanksgiving will turn out—will gluten reappear for a day, momentarily forgiven, like a barely tolerated family member on leave from prison? Maybe we’ll all say a solemn grace before little mounds of Tofurkey adorned with radish sprouts. I miss the old days when food was good and people were bad, not the other way around. A popular annual staple of the now-defunct Heart of the Forest Renaissance Faire in California was a delicacy called Sin-on-a-Stick. The item was, in fact, frozen chocolate-covered cheesecake. I never understood exactly why it was so sinful, unless eating it from a stick instead of from a plate was the first step leading to culinary wickedness. But all that was back in the Olden Days. Luckily, whole areas of the country are still dedicated to doing their bit to keep the wicked from accidentally straying back onto the path. Menu items make their appearance at state fairs that make Sin-on-a-Stick look like food that should be featured at a health spa. If you and I were to attend the San Diego State Fair, we would have the option of enjoying deep-fried, beer-battered, bacon-wrapped hot dogs and chasing them with some deep-fried Tang. The Texas State Fair is even more appealing, since Dallas surpasses San Diego

by serving fried bubblegum, fried beer and a tasty little snack called Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack—a chicken strip coated in flapjack batter, rolled in jalapeño bread crumbs, deep-fried to a golden brown, skewered, and served with a side of syrup. If the fried gum and chicken with jalapeño and maple syrup don’t quite fill a person up, there’s always Hans’ Kraut Ball. I can’t say I know Hans personally, but apparently he’s either quite the gourmet or needs to go back on medication, having lent his name to a motley ball consisting of browned pork sausage, onion, garlic, a “zing” of sauerkraut, mustard and various pungent seasonings all rolled together. Then it’s covered with seasoned breadcrumbs, deep fried, and served with spicy mustard, raspberry chipotle or ranch dressing. Pretty darned zingy. But Dallas can’t even come close on the Zing scale to Indiana’s fair food, which was, I believe, dreamt up by a test kitchen full of starving toddlers. You can order the Elvis Burger, which is, naturally, a bacon-peanut-butter-bananaburger. Surely you’ll want to sink your teeth into a Raspberry Doughnut Chicken Burger, a lovely meal consisting of a deep-fried chicken breast sandwiched between two raspberry jelly-filled doughnuts. Not a soul in Indiana will raise an eyebrow as you scarf down the spaghetti and meatballs ice cream, a concoction of gelato noodles, strawberry “tomato” sauce, shredded white chocolate cheese and chocolate meatballs. Oh, dear America, land of purple mountain majesties, fruited plains, and deep-fried butter balls in Montana. We are thankful for your endless bounty, for pickle pops in Kansas and chocolate-covered bacon-wrapped Oreos in Orange County. We are grateful for amber waves of grain, though we’re definitely not going the gluten route anymore, for non-fat sugar-free decaf caramel chai lattes, for cheeseburgers topped with fried ice cream. (You go, Florida!!) We can’t help but be proud to live in a country which, alongside organic free-range hormonefree soy milk, lemons, and water, offers gummy bacon, bacon ice cream, lightly battered mashed sweet potatoes on a stick with whipped cream, and cranberry wontons which are, as everyone knows, crisp wonton shells filled with cranberry-infused cream cheese and drizzled with chocolate sauce. Come Thanksgiving, I’ll go with the flow of those around me, trying to remember what we all knew as children—that nourishment is the feeling in the air, not the food on the table. Some days it matters much more that we say thanks than “No, thanks” for what is given. Unless, of course, it’s fried gummy bacon birthday cake, in which case all bets are off.

Morgan Westbrook | Beertender Beer drinkers, thank your lucky stars for Morgan’s power of persuasion. If it weren’t for her insistence that her husband keep trying beers, there might not be a Westbrook Brewery. “Edward didn’t like beer for a long time! He always had a great palate—he was a talented cook and mixologist—but focused a lot on wines and whiskeys. My dad’s family sparked my interest in beer, so I always thought home-brewing would be a fun thing for us to try.” After seven years of brewing to friends’ rave reviews, the pair decided to “start a brewery or just stop talking about it.” With their White Thai and IPA as constant offerings, the couple often plays with new recipes for limited time seasonals or special collections. “Every time someone says, ‘I really like your beer’ or they come in to the tasting room to try a craft brew even though they only drink wine, it’s a really proud moment.” Photo by Alice Keeney

Sara Clow | Growing Local As the manager at GrowFood Carolina, a warehouse that connects local farmers to local chefs, Sara lives and breathes local food. A product of the Sustainable Agriculture program at the Coastal Conservation League, the warehouse fills a gap in the cycle that previously left farmers vulnerable. “The League had the vision that the best way to protect rural land in South Carolina from being developed was to make farming more economically sustainable, so the farmers could stay on their land and thrive. The best way to help farmers was to provide the infrastructure they need to efficiently move their goods to market.” Previously Sara worked in San Francisco for organic fruit growers, so she knows good cities and good food—“You are what you eat. Choose fresh, healthy, delicious food and be grateful to the producers who cultivate and care for our food.” But there’s also that extra something about our tasty town: “Charleston loves Charleston. It’s truly wonderful.” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach

Robin Rhea | Sweet & Spicy Agonizing over leaving the corporate world a few years ago was tough. Deciding what to do next, for Robin, was not. “I looked for the things that brought joy to my life: cooking and entertaining for my family and friends. I spent every free moment reading food magazines, cooking, and engaging in food culture wherever I traveled.” Today, her Slather Brand Slatherin’ Sauces are distributed through 500 stores, have appeared in Every Day with Rachael Ray, and she’s currently developing a liter-size bottle for Costco. “I think one of factors that really helped propel Slather Brand Foods in the Northeast—and other regions of the country— is our label, which proudly signifies our Charleston, South Carolina heritage. Charleston is the culinary destination of the South. People expect great food and products coming out of Charleston.” Find Robin’s “cure for boring food” in both original and spicy recipes at your local grocery, specialty food shop or online at slatheriton.com. am at my desk bouncing from screen to screen, window to window, website to website to blog to inbox, getting dizzy and distracted while trying to convince myself this passes for “work,” and my daughter comes in, her face flushed and glowing from being outside, a halo of sweat beading on her upper lip. “Guess what I can do?” she asks, breathless and excited. “A back double flip? One of those twisty seat-to-seat moves?” I venture, my foggy midlife brain unable to find the term “swivel hips.” Claire’s been jumping on her friend’s trampoline, and her double-gainer grin suggests she’s reached heights approaching cloud nine. “No, a handstand into a backbend!” she announces, triumphantly. We spent endless hours all summer, me as spotter, she kicking up to catch my waiting arm extended like a traffic cop, then I braced her as she flopped over, sometimes more successfully and more gracefully than others. She practiced front-overs on the beach, in my bedroom, in the front yard, in the ocean. Relentlessly. Religiously. She was determined; she was dying to do it. Her arms would ache from hours of trying. She mastered kicking up into a balanced handstand—a marvel in itself in my opinion—and once she came really, really close to tumbling into a backbend without my support, but poor kid, Gabby Douglas she will never be. As my patient yoga teachers can attest, there is not a flexible, gymnastics-prone muscle in my body, and I’m afraid my daughter’s orthopedic inheritance ain’t doing her any favors. But the trampoline did. It gave Claire just the right amount of cushion and confidence to let herself freefall into a backbend. Along with my nonlimber musculature, Claire also inherited my love of trampolines. As a kid, I lived to jump. I adored it. I craved the ping-ponging of my body off those coiled springs; I loved being launched into the sky, the forgiving landing, the slow-learning of, eventually, training my mind and my body into a back flip. I first fell head over heels, literally, for jumping at summer camp, back in the pre-litigious 1970s when our YMCA camp not only offered trampoline as an activity, but encouraged kids to soar, twist and flip on trampolines built into a pit framed by cement block. The camp tramps had fabulous super-duper springy springs, but if you mis-jumped, your skull or other body parts had a high probability of encountering concrete. A scene from the first season of Mad Men, when little daughter Sally Draper runs into the living room with a plastic dry cleaning bag over her head and no adult is remotely interested or concerned reminded me of the oblivious days of those camp death-traps that were my first love. We didn’t have a trampoline at our house, but I made myself at home in my cousin’s backyard, and down the street at the Marlowes’, where their bouncy turf became my playground and training ground and my escape from the ups and downs of life at home amidst a turbulent divorce. I loved the feeling of flying, of being suspended ever so briefly in the air, then on landing the promise of ricocheting back up there again. I loved trying new tricks, finetuning balance with power and height, figuring out how to move and control an adolescent body that otherwise was more or less out of my control. In time I could even do a one-and-a-half front flip—not exactly Olympian gold medal material, but good enough for me. These days when Claire asks, no—begs, for a trampoline, I’m tempted to go against my better, safer judgment and dreams of a decent landscaped yard and let her have the joy of jumping to her heart’s content. Because I know that desire. I know that joy, that compulsion almost, to soar and levitate and rebound against gravity, against all that holds you down, up into the air again. Because it’s what I still long to do. Because now, in the mire of midlife as I feel stuck and motionless in many aspects of work and life, I want nothing more than to bound upward, to jump dangerously high—and when I sink down, to know I’ll bounce back again. Maybe even turn a flip. George Nissen, the inventor of the modern trampoline, supposedly enjoyed jumping until he died at age 96, and at his 80th birthday party the spry athlete sprung into a handstand right on the dining room table. Claire, my little handstand queen, got a kick out of that bit of trivia, although she doesn’t want to wait 70 years to follow suit. “Mom, a front-over was so easy on the trampoline,” she says, with an unspoken please? shining clearly in her eyes. “Claire, that’s great!” I reply, my heart feeling like a tight spring, holding energy and desire in as reason prevails. I pretend I don’t see her look of longing.

LOVE Of all the guys in this room, I had to lay my eyes on the one who was giving me my grade.

Lisa Evans

I

knew I was falling for him the day I walked into the lecture hall and saw him sitting in the front row. Hunched over a book, he pulled out a black ballpoint pen and scribbled a note in the margin. His eyes, hidden behind his dark-rimmed glasses, didn’t waver even as the noise level of the room rose. The room hushed as a tall man with broad shoulders and messy white hair entered. He introduced himself as Professor Thompson and asked the boy in the front row to stand. This was Tim, our teaching assistant—the one who would lead our tutorials and grade our papers. Of all the guys in this room, I had to lay my eyes on the one who was giving me my grade. Throughout the semester, I enjoyed Tim’s tutorials. The subject matter, political data, could put me to sleep, but Tim made it exciting. He regurgitated Marxist quotes and dressed like a rocker, with a metal chain connecting his wallet to his pants, and he had a thin beard that framed his small, boyish face. He made nerdy look cool. Two months later, I answered an email from Tim, requesting an office assistant. Although he was brilliant, organization wasn’t his strong suit. His tiny home office was cluttered with thousands of articles and newspaper clippings and he offered to pay me $50 for a few hours of work every Friday morning to organize them into binders.

Summer Love

The Source for Unique Lamps

Fridays were now my favorite days and I leaped out of bed earlier than my alarm clock and hopped on the long subway ride downtown. We went for lunch at the bar down the street and talked about school, then ourselves—our lives, our friends, our hobbies...and his girlfriend. I knew she existed. I’d seen her stuff around the house. It didn’t bother me. A girlfriend put some distance between what I wanted to happen and what could never happen. That summer, Tim announced that he and his girlfriend were splitting up. She’d moved out and after a weekend of wallowing, he realized he was happy about the change. They weren’t the most compatible couple—she a Sex and the City shopaholic who barged into his office to debate whether Carrie should finally break up with Big while he immersed himself in the political teachings of Gramsci. We met at a bar one sunny afternoon in June. The course was now over and the upbeat atmosphere of the outdoor patio filled with nearby office workers indulging in after-hours drinks got to me, so I indulged in some red wine. It was getting late, but the warm summer air whispered to me to stay out and enjoy myself, so we headed back to his house. As I sipped the last of a bottle of red wine, I felt his hands cup around my shoulders, massaging my sore back. His hands stopped moving and I felt his breath beside my ear, hot and panting. I turned my head and met his mouth. His warm lips tasted better than the full-bodied wine. He pulled me up, our lips still intertwined, and wrapped his arms around my body. We moved from the patio, through his office and into the kitchen and then down the stairs into his bedroom. He removed my clothes slowly, yet with confidence, and made love to me as though he’d wanted to do this for as long as I had. In the months after, we saw each other infrequently. I had a trip to Europe planned with a girlfriend and the start of the new school year made seeing each other difficult. I didn’t worry—I knew he was the type who needed his space. On one of those infrequent dates, the warm summer air now a cool breeze that made my nose cold, we went to a movie and then for drinks. He hadn’t kissed me all night, and as we sat in the dark bar lit only by candles sticking out of beer bottles, wax of different colors floating down them creating colorful and unusual shapes, he finally brought up the subject of us. “What we shared was beautiful, but I’m not in a place right now where I can be a good boyfriend,” he said. I was crushed, but I understood and didn’t let on how hurt I was. We promised to stay in touch, to be friends and maybe in the future, we could be more. For the next year, I dated on and off, but never seriously, always holding out hope that Tim and I could re-visit our summer romance. We met for drinks the following summer and I was sure this would be our time. “I want to be with you,” I said. He sighed. “I’m sorry, Lis. We’ll always be friends, but it just isn’t right for me.” He talked about the papers he was working on, his PhD, and a conference he was speaking at in October. He’s too busy, I thought. Of course he doesn’t have time to date. Two weeks later, I strolled into the student lounge and there he was. His thick dark-rimmed glasses fell to the tip of his nose while he stared intensely into a book. I took the table near the back of the room—facing him, studying him. Just watching him at work inspired me to study harder, to read more, to do more. Then, my heart stopped. A tall, skinny girl with straight blonde hair that fell down to her waist strolled in. Wearing cargo pants and a t-shirt, she walked up to his table and sweetly brushed his lips with hers. She took the seat in front of him and they talked briefly before she pulled a book out from her backpack and they sat in silence, reading together, their knees touching under the table. I knew her. She was in my class. She was intelligent and said things that made the professor cup his chin with his index finger and say “hmm.” I liked her, and yet here she was sitting with my Tim. I needed to hate her, but I couldn’t. It should have been me, I thought as I buried my head in my book, underlining incomprehensible passages with my blue pen, my mind wandering back to that hot summer night, wishing I could have it all again—the hot humid air, the fruity wine and him—his curly black hair tickling my breasts, the half-empty glasses of wine sitting outside on the patio awaiting our return.

“For those very few readers who are unfamiliar with ‘mansplaining,’ Karen Healey has a pretty good, concise definition of it: ‘Mansplaining isn’t just the act of explaining while male, of course; many men manage to explain things every day without in the least insulting their listeners. Mansplaining is when a dude tells you, a woman, how to do something you already know how to do, or how you are wrong about something you are actually right about, or miscellaneous and inaccurate “facts” about something you know a hell of a lot more about than he does.’ Bonus points if he is explaining how you are wrong about something being sexist!” ~Sady Doyle on TigerBeatdown.com.

PaperWeight I thought I could always convince him, but now it seems that the world is taking his side. Kim Todd

I’m. Not. Moving. This. Again.” my husband grunted, heaving the fourth cardboard box up the steps. He’d said it last time, but had relented. Before we owned a headboard, or framed posters, or matching towels, we had the Oxford English Dictionary. The volumes came to Montana in the back of a red pickup truck, along with the camping gear, the baseball-card collection, and the few vintage dresses that made up the bulk of our possessions at the time. We brought them to San Francisco in a U-Haul, back to Montana in a larger U-Haul, then to Pennsylvania in a moving van. I thought I could always convince him, but now it seems that the world is taking his side. The dictionary’s publisher hinted he might drop the printed version. The Encyclopedia Britannica has already gone solely online. Two million people read the virtual OED every month with their subscription, while since the 1989 edition, only 30,000 people have bought the set of 20 volumes, weighing a hundred-plus pounds. But, after my husband and select other family members, it’s the hundredplus pounds I love most. I first encountered the OED in college. Rushing into the library, needing a definition for a paper hours overdue, I was surprised to see that the dictionary stretched across an entire bookshelf. The letter “S” alone required two volumes. I soon forgot what I’d come to look up, lost in the endless meanings: alternate, rare, obsolete. Who knew that “extravagant” had to do, at its root, less with piles of diamonds than a willingness to roam out of bounds? Or that a man could be “sparrow-blasted?” Or that it takes two oversize pages of tiny type to cover the subtleties of “cow?” Words, which I’d thought of as the nails and lumber used to build a story, were revealed to be stories in and of themselves. After that, I visited the dictionary often. The excesses of text seemed in keeping with the library itself, its high ceilings, dark wood, crenelations and windows with scenes from King Lear and Blake’s Songs of Experience. The arches and leaded glass flaunted an awe-inspiring, almost aggressive reverence for knowledge. Sinking into the maze of letters and sounds was like sinking into the leather chairs, setting out on a halting quest into a dream. My owning a copy was as improbable as my living in a Gothic tower. On a slow news day at the small paper where I worked after graduation, the editor asked me to cover the school district’s surplus book sale and sent along

our grumpy, overworked, and sole photographer. We got there early, when it was still only open to home-school parents, and wandered among rickety metal shelves, paging through the outdated geography texts and children’s books with black-and-white pictures, sneezing at the dust, hoping to stumble across a news hook. Among the well-worn encyclopedias, a 1961 OED perched in pale blue protective covers with the Oxford crest on them, stamped “Highline High School” across the top. It was all there: the matter-of-fact font with its sedate serifs; the cryptic citations of books from 1395, the sense that, as you pulled the book from the shelf, you hefted the weight of the language. The A-B volume was missing, but I didn’t care. Pressing my $5 into a home-schooling mother’s hand, I begged her to buy me the set. The photographer was amazed, not at the glory of the dictionary, but at the extremity of my emotion. “I’ve never seen someone so excited about a book,” he grunted. “Hold it right there.” At the bottom of the photo of a young woman smiling ecstatically and pointing to the open hatchback of a beat-up Toyota, piled with dictionary volumes, he scrawled the caption: “When you get the OED, life has a whole new meaning.” And it did. For years, I used it for almost every article and essay I wrote, discovering in its pages the secrets of “orientation,” “catapult,” and “wanton.” Often five or six volumes would be open at once, carpeting my office floor like a flock of stunned birds. My husband and hauled it out to settle the most vicious Scrabble arguments (though not ones where words started with “A” or “B”). But now, I rarely open the hard copy any more, one of the millions who log on to look things up. Is that heap of paper, ink, and cardboard anchoring my bookcase really necessary? Still, should we ever move again, I bet my husband will give in. I want to say the dictionary defines me, defines us, in some fundamental way, but I mean the opposite. The OED says to “define” is “to set bounds to, to limit, restrict, confine.” That “fine” is the same as in “finish.” But the OED challenges limits, revealing doors that open both into the past and future possibility. Keeping it, despite all practical considerations, would be extravagant. My desire makes me an extravagant, too: “One who does not keep within ordinary or reasonable limits; an exceptional or eccentric person; a fanatic.” (That usage is obsolete, like the paper dictionary, and the newspaper, and the photographer’s film.) All the more reason to cling. An extravagance lures us beyond the bounds of normalcy, like curiosity, like love, like anything worth holding on to.

Kim Todd is the author of three books about science and the environment, and her essays and articles have appeared in Orion, Sierra Magazine and Natural Home, among other places. 110  novemberw2012

Anyone who reads this page knows I’m a huge Jack Kerouac fan, and I’m rereading In the Night Café by Joyce Johnson, briefly one of his lovers. It’s a beautiful little novel that made a huge impression on me when I first found it years ago. I heard “Look Me Up” from Julien Funk & The Painted Thief on a funny, explicit (yes, full frontal nudity) web series called Hunting Season about the sexual exploits of a group of gay men in Manhattan. Think Queer as Folk meets Sex and the City. The EP is a free download at julienfunk.com.
