o rd i n a r y.

The earth is going through its beautiful old cycle of change this month. She’s giving up her sexy green heat and showing her roots, taking a rest from the cabaret act of summer and

Swapping the Sun’s glaring footlights for a mellow gold moon. October is Mother Earth’s homebody, the calendar’s domestic goddess. She’s pumpkin and plaid, wool and red wine, pajamas by 9 and news at 11. Her perfume is fallen leaves and wood smoke with a hint of candy corn. She loves chili and cornbread, half-time shows and hometown teams, plum-brown lipstick and

Well-Seasoned Jeans. October is porch lights and reading lamps, oatmeal for breakfast and flannel for bed. But she still believes in black cats and haunted houses, magic and mischief and getting lost in a maze. Part good girl, part spice girl, our homecoming queen on a broom. “I knew I wanted to purchase my dress from the Gown Boutique of Charleston as soon as I walked in the door. They immediately made me feel comfortable, took the time to understand my budget and what I was looking for, and were extremely patient while I tried to make my decision. I was even more confident in my decision during the alterations process. They were meticulous in making sure the dress was perfect, and when I put it on, I was so happy with everything...the dress, the belt, and the veil, all from the Gown Boutique! - previous bride

GOOD BONES Throughout the house, we encountered design inspired by a 64-pack of crayons. Dawn Downey

40  octoberw2013 skirt!magazine

Good Bones

“Get her some flowers for Mother’s Day. Purple iris.” Wendy called out a final instruction from her front porch. She was a psychic. She read Tarot cards, threw the I Ching and channeled the voices of mystical guides. She was referring to my stepmom, Mother Kim, who had died a dozen years earlier. Mother Kim had spoken through Wendy once before, offering me advice about attending a writers’ conference. Wendy had looked confused. “She says…get your hair done. Does that make sense to you?” Oh, yeah. Mother Kim had married my father when I was 12, a depressed and stoic child. My clothes were drab, my hair uncombed. She, on the other hand, was exotic; her lips were crimson, her fingernails pink. She dressed in lilac, violet, and amethyst. She despaired that I wore beige. She was also a bit clairvoyant, predicting when the phone was about to ring, reporting that lost souls were fluttering down the hall. She and Dad bought a house and before moving the family in, they painted the dining room red. It was beautiful, as warm and hypnotic as a fireplace. Sometimes I’d sit alone at the table, pretending to read, peeking at those fiery walls in wonder. The year we lived in that house, I gained a bit more confidence, enough to participate in after-school activities. Mother Kim nudged me along. But I still wore beige. After we moved, she continued to chip away at my insecurities. Took me to a hairdresser, enrolled me in ballet. She introduced me to Vogue, which held a permanent spot on her nightstand beside a bottle of Chanel No. 5. For my 16th birthday, she bought me a hot-pink party dress. In my opinion, it looked like a pleated lampshade with spaghetti straps, but Mother Kim saw its elegance … and mine. I paused before pulling out of Wendy’s driveway. Her comment about purple irises surprised me. She didn’t know my stepmom’s favorite color was purple. And I couldn’t recall Mother Kim ever mentioning a fondness for irises. Oh, well. I had other things to think about. At 50-something––wearing red, my hair in dreadlocks––I was on my own and about to buy my first house. Dale, my realtor, parked her sedan in front of a brick split-level with white shutters framing a bay window. We walked to the stoop. She opened the door. I peeked in. “Would you look at that?” The kitchen glowed from the end of the entry hall, ablaze in color. I hurried across the threshold to investigate. The room was a fiery orange that made me squint, its brilliance intensified by sunlight streaming through the windows. In this kitchen, a morning cup of coffee would be superfluous. I couldn’t help laughing, but Dale pointed out that the sink and countertops needed to be replaced and the linoleum flooring had a hole in it. Throughout the house, we encountered design inspired by a 64-pack of crayons. Banana in the family room. Powder blue in the nursery, with white clouds dotting the ceiling. A second bedroom divided horizontally, the walls raspberry from the windowsill to the ceiling, blueberry from midline to floor. Dale opened the back door. The children had turned the patio into a parking lot for their plastic vehicles. An orange three-wheeler had crashed head-on into the retaining wall that surrounded the terrace. A red wagon was parked nearby. A pink bike with streamers on the handlebars lay on its side atop the wagon. There was a playhouse in the middle of the yard near the dining room window. I imagined little girls sitting beneath its red roof, fussing at their dolls, under the watchful eyes of their mom. The surrounding lawn appeared healthy enough, although it needed a good mowing. In flowerbeds that bordered the yard on three sides, the leaves of spring bulbs were just breaking ground. The bright color scheme of the house tickled my funny bone, but Dale didn’t share my amusement. “What were they thinking? Beige sells.” She emphasized the important things––location, price, construction. All met with her approval. “It’s got good bones,” she said, and she’d negotiate for kitchen repair expenses, but in the end I decided to buy that house because it made me laugh. On a Sunday evening before I took possession, I snuck into the backyard. The owners had moved out weeks earlier, and weeds had claimed the lawn. It wasn’t as healthy as I’d first thought. The playhouse was gone, a concrete slab in its place. Instead of picturing children at play, I worried about the cost of replacing that cement with turf. And could I really afford to remodel the kitchen? And maybe Dale was right about all that color. I collapsed on a stone bench to ponder the scope of the disaster. As I rubbed my temples, wishing someone could reassure me, movement along the fence line caught my attention. The bulbs had bloomed. Hundreds of purple irises were swaying in the breeze. That’s when I realized it was Mother’s Day.

Dare to be different this holiday season.

The 2014 Charleston Area Firefighter Calendar is pretty hot. Thirteen firefighters are fanning the flames of support around Charleston Animal Society’s Medical Fund. They’ve made their modeling debut with dogs and cats in the 2014 Charleston Area Firefighter Calendar to benefit the fund, which cares for abandoned, injured and abused animals. Dan Arthur, one calendar model from the City of Charleston Fire Department, said: “It’s just kind of the nature of firefighters. They always want to help.” Tryouts for the candidates involved fundraising and short shows, and Dan was chosen after performing a Chippendales skit from Saturday Night Live. “It was a lot about personality and not just about looks,” said Dustin Ford, another model and captain with the North Charleston Fire Department. He and the others visited the animal society to tour the facilities, interact with the animals and examine the equipment and efforts that are essential for providing services. Dan said, “The no-kill aspect of it is definitely the driving force behind it all.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? Dustin: “I just get to show off my beautiful legs.” What do you like about reading skirt!? Dan: “It’s like the paper version of Pinterest.” 48  octoberw2013 skirt!magazine

The chair is now more than 100 years old, a true antique. I fantasize about going on Antiques Roadshow with it, and when the appraiser asks me if I realize that it’s now worth $5,000 dollars, I will respond with, “Really, I’m surprised. But of course I won’t part with it.”

M

Carolyn Dow

y father and I were on a rare visit to see his Aunt Jesse, who still lived in his childhood home on the eastern border of New York. It was 1944, and I was six years old. Just as we were about to leave, Aunt Jesse announced she was having the barn torn down the next day. “Maybe you should see if there is anything you want in there,” she said. So Dad and I went out to take a look. We slid open the door, which was hanging on one hinge, and peered inside. You could hear the field mice scurry away, and there was a stray cat asleep in the corner but it was mostly just old hay and cobwebs. About to leave, Dad said he wanted a last look at the hayloft. He climbed the ladder and I could hear him rummaging about. Finally, wearing a huge grin on his face, he came back down the ladder carrying a forlorn-looking, child-sized rocking chair which he held out to me. “For you,” he said. I was not at all interested in that filthy little chair. I don’t want it, I thought. We put the chair in the trunk of the car and I promptly forgot about it. Coming home from school, a few weeks later, on my seventh birthday, I spied the chair in the middle of the living room. The chipped paint was repaired and the gilt decoration restored; the chair was beautiful and it was mine, but before I could claim ownership, I had to learn the story behind it. My dad’s father was a country doctor who treated a number of patients in the nearby Shaker community. The Shakers made fine handcrafted wooden furniture and often paid my grandfather with custom-made pieces instead of cash. The rocker was one of those payments. Dad told me how as a young child he would retreat to a quiet spot, sit in his rocker and read to escape the drudgery of farm life. The rocker became a refuge for me, as well, and I would sit for hours rocking and reading. It was in that chair that I learned to love to read. When I grew too big to fit in the chair my stuffed animals took it over, and it sat in my room until my mom died and we sold her house. I was about to move across country and needed a place to store my few childhood treasures including the rocker. The couple who bought Mom’s

house offered to let me keep them in the attic for as long as I wanted. My intention was to spend a year in San Francisco and then go back east to marry my longtime boyfriend. Before the year was up I had dumped my boyfriend, met my future husband and decided that there was no way I was ever going back home to live. I had forgotten about my treasures stored in the attic, and so did my friends who were storing them. They sold the house, but my treasures stayed in the attic. I went back home to attend a family wedding about 15 years later, and while there, I decided to take a walk over to see what changes our old house had undergone. I knocked on the door but no one was home, so I started to snoop around the outside. Stacked in the driveway was a pile of household furniture with a sign indicating that it was a donation for the Salvation Army. Thinking I might learn something about the people living there now, I perused the junk. It was then that I spied it; there was my rocking chair. With a herculean effort and feeling very much the thief, I extracted the rocker from the rest of the pile. It looked as if it had seen hard times— chipped paint, dirty smudges and a broken rocker—but to me it was like finding an old friend. I decided to take it home and fix it up for my fiveyear-old daughter as my dad had done 35 years ago for me. Just as I was carrying it up the street, the Salvation Army truck rounded the corner on its way to pick up the donation sitting in the driveway. My daughter viewed it with the same disdain that I had so many years ago. She didn’t want it, but I was adamant that she should have it. I carried the chair on the plane, holding it on my lap for the entire flight across country. It was long before the threat of terrorists and scrutiny of carry-on baggage. Once home, I set about restoring the chair until it looked almost as good as new. Now, it met my daughter’s princess standards, and the chair soon became a favorite spot for her to escape with a book. It sat in her bedroom, filled with her dolls long after she was too big to sit in it. When she moved to a place of her own, I stored the chair in the attic. I will get it out when the expected grandchild is old enough to enjoy it. The chair is now more than 100 years old, a true antique. I fantasize about going on Antiques Roadshow with it, and when the appraiser asks me if I realize that it’s now worth $5,000 dollars, I will respond with, “Really, I’m surprised. But of course I won’t part with it.” After two serendipitous appearances, both at crucial times in the life of my rocker, the chair deserves a permanent place in our family.

If By Chance

O

n a late September evening of my junior year, I was walking back from my shift taking phone orders at Pizza Devil, the campus pizza delivery service, and ran into my friend Noel, a soft-spoken guy with a heap of wild brown hair and forlorn khakis. We’d crossed paths a million times before—in chemistry class, at fraternity parties, on the dance floor as each other’s occasional “safe date” during our freshman year when we each had hometown romances simmering on back burners (or front burner, in his case) at other colleges. Yet this time our paths crossed on the quad walkway at a lucky moment for me, decked out in my flour-dusted Pizza Devil t-shirt, smelling of oregano and pepperoni. In a few days, September 28th to be exact, Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks would be playing at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and Noel, a die-hard fanatical Neil fan, had an extra ticket. And not just any ticket: row A, center aisle, seat 2. He’d camped out for three nights to be first at the ticket window, but, poor guy, had not yet scored a date. His first two choices had turned him (and Neil) down. I just happened to be walking across the quad at the right time, and since that time was close to suppertime, my pepperoni perfume probably didn’t hurt. “You wanna go?” he asked, his head tilted shyly under the weight of all that bushy hair. “Hell yeah, I’ll go!” said I, who heretofore had only been to some cheesy beach music concerts and to hear Dolly Parton back when she was just crooning into the big time with her big hair and own TV show. “I’ll have to get someone to cover my Pizza Devil shift, but it shouldn’t be a problem.” Heck, I’d have paid the Devil himself to work my shift. I knew choice seats and real rock-n-roll when I saw it. And so that Saturday night I sat on the front row as Neil opened with “Comes a Time” and closed the last set with “Do You Wanna Dance.” I sang along to “Old Man” and “Sugar Mountain,” and when Neil in his distinct tenor warbled about “looking for a heart of gold” I wondered if by chance I’d stumbled upon mine. Turns out I had. I guess there does come a time. Fast forward a quarter of a century, and I’m still grateful to those two foolish girls who turned down my now-husband’s offer of primo concert seats. I’ve probably seen Neil Young perform another half dozen shows (from less primo seats) in the ensuing years, and thank him silently each time for the unwitting set-up, despite the fact that my husband still attempts to emulate Neil’s ragtag hair style (and this despite the fact that he’s now losing that mop-o-hair). I don’t pretend to understand how it all played out—from a concert together to a life together—and continues to play out, with children and jobs and a mortgage and a lawn to water and mow, and a complete collection of Neil Young bootlegs, albums and greatest hits, not to mention the less-than-impressive autobiography. But I do know that my answer to “do you wanna dance” is still “hell yeah.” I wanna dance and I wanna remember and I wanna hold flickering Bic lighters high into the dark night and ask for more, more. More mystery at how, by chance, it all comes together and sometimes, too, comes apart. More awe that we get to be part of this big rockin’ concert at all, that we all have a lyric or two to chime in with, off-key or on, that we get to walk out into this world with our ears ringing. As a person of faith, I used to envision a puppet-master God who had a clear game plan and an incredibly sophisticated system of miraculously untangled marionette strings that he somehow knew how to pull and pluck at the right time, and, voilà, the concert date fell into place. Now that my faith is a bit more tangled, I skew more toward the mad-scientist God, who smashes subatomic particles together at incredibly high speeds until she discovers (as she pretty much knew all along, smart girl that she is) the elusive matter that holds it all together, then lets the residual bits and pieces fall where they may. It’s up to us to sweep them up and water and mow and maybe write songs about nostalgic old men and hearts of gold. I’m not convinced that one perspective is really any less providential or less faith-based than the other. But I do know that there are, by chance, two meanings of the word “chance.” One is luck or fate or “the force that makes things happen,” and the other is opportunity or possibility. Perhaps it’s not by chance that in French, the noun that means luck or fate (le hasard) is masculine and the one that means opportunity (l’occasion) is feminine. I’ll opt for the latter because, given the opportunity, hell yeah, I wanna dance.

I’ve been touched by some amazing people through the power of Komen. They are women and men who know the fragility of life and have found strength in it. Many are survivors who simply want to help those now in their shoes travel the path they’ve already worn. There are spouses and children who’ve lost loved ones, but haven’t lost hope. So many are volunteers whose lives are already full, but make room for the cause. It is truly a privilege and a pleasure to be a part of Komen.

Coincidences are a deeply personal conversation, often the surprise answer to a prayer or the connection to a feeling that magic is loose in the world. Stacy Appel

A

few nights ago I was lucky enough to attend a concert of Persian classical music. Unlike concert-goers at a folk or jazz performance, this audience sat entirely still in the darkness, as if in meditation with the performers. No one whispered to a seat mate, rustled a program or knocked over a Coke bottle, though the atmosphere was informal and relaxed. I was hypnotized by the unique beauty of the improvisational singing, percussion, and especially the melodious strains of the setar, a Persian instrument similar to a lute. Two hours swept by, and all at once the concert was over. The performers took a final bow on the softly lit stage and walked out into the theater to greet their friends and family members. I realized that while I hadn’t understood even a word of the lyrics or poetry, the meaning of the compositions had gone straight to my heart, as if they were prayers said for a young child. October brings gifts such as this—subtle, sudden, transformative. On the road to Sacramento, a tedious stretch of highway cluttered with traffic, I look up to discover dazzling cloud paintings overhead, back-lit by the sun, as if nature is throwing a surprise party to jolt us all awake. I return

Windfalls

Specializing in helping people handle the belongings of a loved one who has passed away. from errands one afternoon to the astonishing sight of the neighbor’s pear tree, which has burst from pale yellow to a royal flame-crown of red-orange, seemingly overnight. Another day, returning books to the library, I accidentally come across Amit Majmudar’s The Abundance, a novel so exquisite it reminds me of the books I hurried home to read as a child, wanting nothing so much as to re-enter the rich world I’d found in the first chapter. I read a poem a while ago by the Persian mystic Rumi, and one verse had special meaning for me. In the passage, he explained that at the same time we are looking for our daily bread, our daily bread is seeking us, too. Whether we tirelessly work for it or sit back and wait faithfully, our daily bread will find us. I couldn’t help but think of a night this past summer when my ancient water heater, having outlasted its useful life, went out in a cascade of glory, gushing water into the backyard. The amount needed to buy and install a new one was mind-boggling, and it meant defraying all my immediate plans. Now there were no extra funds for car repairs or vet bills, never mind the most modest extravagances, while, from the sound of it, everyone else I knew was just taking off for a week in Puerto Vallarta or returning from a hotel stay on Kauai. But there is no stopping the daily bread—or in my case, the entire breadbasket. A week later a local magazine called to let me know I’d won two premium dinner-and-concert tickets at a vineyard an hour away. I vaguely remembered submitting the contest entry online in a bout of wishful thinking. On a night shortly thereafter, a friend and I found ourselves sipping wine at a front-row table after the most lavish meal imaginable; we sat back contentedly while Martina McBride sang “Safe in the Arms of Love.” The food, the wine, listening to music under the stars was extraordinary, but more wonderful still was the sense that something was listening to me, as well. Coincidences are a deeply personal conversation, often the surprise answer to a prayer or the connection to a feeling that magic is loose in the world. What amazes and startles me would seem entirely ordinary to my brother, who isn’t easily impressed; he finds his own private miracles in other, more concrete ways. He survived frightening near-misses while rock-climbing and, more recently, supported his wife through her chemo regime and back to good health, which has helped him believe in a benevolent force behind the scenes. Scientists rely on “happy accidents” as a key factor in innovation; without them we would have no microwaves, X-rays, Super Glue, Slinkys, pacemakers, or Velcro. Without Velcro, I would probably never go walking again, since I’m far too lazy to lace up my running shoes, so I would end up needing a pacemaker, X-rays, and Super Glue, as well. Richard Wiseman, a psychologist from the University of Hertfordshire, conducted an experiment in which he placed the same opportunities—some money on the ground and a potential encounter with an importantly connected businessman—in the paths of two different people, one who felt she was an unlucky person, the other who felt that things always seemed to work out well. The “lucky” guy immediately noticed the money on the ground and pocketed it, then got into a spontaneous conversation with the businessman in the coffee shop where he’d been planted. The “unlucky” woman, meanwhile, stepped right over the cash, oblivious, and drank her coffee without saying a word to the same businessman. Who knows what the daily bread is up to? In 2004, a woman named Diana Duyser said her grilled cheese sandwich bore the image of the Virgin Mary. She claimed that she took a bite after making the sandwich and saw a face staring back at her. She put the sandwich in a clear plastic box with cotton balls and kept it on her night stand. Duyser reports that the sandwich has never sprouted a spore of mold. She was able to sell it for $28,000 on eBay to an online casino called Golden Palace, which is enough bread to make a believer out of anyone. If you open a fortune cookie, make a secret wish list, walk out on the balcony of the next boring party you go to and look up at the stars (which are often better company), it’s a little easier to remember that something is up there winking at you. Luckily, the daily bread delivery just cannot be figured out. Whatever is divine and hopeful works through music, rocks, roadside stands, kids, clouds, eBay, magazines, sandwiches, dramas large and small, and sometimes, the merest whispers on the wind, meant for you alone. Savoring Sweet October:

Anne of Green Gables said "I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers." Who could blame her? The air is crisper, the evening sky seems clearer and brighter, and every day feels like the perfect day to bake a pie!

October Challenge: Fall is filled with activity and anticipation. Resist the tendency to barrel through these days with your eyes fixed on the holiday season. Light a fire, snuggle with a loved one, wrap your hands around a warm mug... do everything you can to savor every drop of this sweet season.

Indulge in a delish Green Eggs and Ham-Burger from HOM, to be directly followed by a food coma. Head over to the Boone Hall Plantation Pumpkin Patch to collect some pretty pumpkins for carving and decorating. Try to break 100 for once in my life at the Alley on Columbus Street, and attempt to make "granny-style" bowling acceptable in the process.

Strawberry Fields: Chicken, turkey or tofu, sliced strawberries, avocado, mixed greens, spiced pecans, goat cheese. Served with a honey-lemon-ginger vinaigrette.

Count down the days until Bay Street Biergarten opens its doors this month. Can't wait to check out their high tech tap tables and craft beer! Grab a Strawberry Fields Salad from Black Bean Company over lunch.

Suzanne Goldston has an alternate view of the universe. “The planet is waking up to treating lack of ease in ways other than chemicals.” To Suzanne of Seeking Indigo, that means crystals. By placing crystals on a client or creating a surrounding formation, she balances or heals by altering the frequencies of elemental energies: earth, wind, water and fire. Example: She can turn an aggravated, fiery client airy or grounded. “There are very few people that I see that aren’t in need of some sort of spiritual healing.” During her four years at Seeking Indigo, she’s mainly met with female clients, but has newly noticed an increase in male patrons. “Masculine energy is evolving as well. It’s evolving into a place of protecting rather than dominating women.” Regardless of gender, Susan offers services as an Ayurvedic Practitioner (for alternative medicine) and Reiki Master (for hands-on-healing), and hopes to become a Clinical Crystal Resonance Therapist. “When you combine all that together, hold on. Hold on.”

Mary Dellucci puts her cards on the table. During a consultation with Mary, it’s all hands on deck—a deck of tarot cards. The Reiki master and tarot card reader’s clients pick the deck that speaks to them. “Every deck has its own voice,” she explains. She shuffles the cards and lays them out for the interactive reading, which allows their higher selves to converse. The client can ask three direct questions. “I want people to take control of the issues in their lives. I want them to find their way back to the path they are supposed to be walking.” But the member of Charleston Area Tarot Society won’t deliver direct medical, legal or financial advice. “There are certain things that your higher self does not understand—time, spatial analysis and money.” She provides direction, and won’t render another reading until the clients accomplish what they need to. “It gives them immense power over themselves to do what is right. Everything for a reason.”

Pam O’Rourke is a natural healer. In her late 30s, this empath realized that her ability to experience others’ emotions and sensations was atypical. “We’re hardwired to perceive and to discern. I just developed it over the years.” She eventually became a licensed nurse and aesthetician, and learned Healing Touch therapy to balance and restore energy. “What we need in our life is total relaxation.” She compels clients toward equilibrium at her office on Isle of Palms, where she pairs treatments like facials, microdermabrasion and chemical peels with 15 minutes of Healing Touch, all the while spreading sounds and vibrations with Tibetan medicine bowls. “It gives them total peace...it’s almost like a meditative state where they float.” Pam is also the co-coordinator of the Wise Women of Charleston, who meet monthly for presentations on spiritual topics. “Being around all of these women, you just feel that energy. You each have different gifts.”

Serendipity Finding something good when you’re not searching for it.

Hooked! After a hiking trip in 1941, Swiss electrical engineer Georges de Mestral found burrs clinging to his pants and his dog’s fur. Looking at the burrs under a microscope, he found that their hooks would cling to anything loop-shaped. Thus Velcro was developed, and kids forgot how to tie their shoes.

Too often, I take on projects out of duty, or to make money, or because I can't say no. But it's only when I pursue something for its own sake that time stands still and my mind is free to go fishing in the cosmos. That's when I remember what pure joy feels like... love at first sight, new school supplies, a bucket of peonies on a rainy day. High-five to my lucky stars.

W h a t ’s k e e p i n g m e a w a k e a t n i g h t : Looking forward to:

Writing an e-book Biking to the beach Starting painting classes again Making the first chili of the season Breaking out my cowboy boots Full Hunter’s Moon on Oct. 18 Beating my daughter at Word Warp robertmontgomery.org

I am jealous of:

Exploring valslist.com This American Life podcasts Political pandering & pimping All the junk I’ve bought in a lifetime. Wishing I could return it & get my money back. Five seasons of Breaking Bad Trying to learn “Volare” in Italian Trying to customize a Tumblr page A week full of meetings What’s next? What if? What am I missing?

W h a t ’s o n m y i Pa d :

W h a t ’s o n m y m i n d :

I’ve been searching for coffee like I had in Italy for years and never seem to find it. Joe in NYC comes close, but, alas, I live in Charleston. I just stumbled on an e-book called Perfect Coffee at Home, written by two former Marines who served in Afghanistan together. I love their obsession with coffee and hope I catch it!

I thought that as I got older, my “real” self would reveal itself like a tree being stripped down to bare branches. It would be authentic, undistracted by the ephemeral, unimpressed by success, beautiful in its simplicity. Imagine my surprise to find that I still get up every morning to 15-year-old me—confused about what to wear, craving sugar and love, constantly searching for more.
