The thing about sparks is that you might have to sit in the dark to see them, but when
you
do—boy-oh-boy–do
they
ever shine. Sparks start revolutions. They glow like crazy diamonds in our pounding hearts. Everything is possible. Once ignited, we can shine on and on, blinding the world with our brilliance. We don’t sweat, we sparkle. We gleam, shimmer and shine. Lightning and rocket fuel are nothing compared to the sparks of “I can” and “I will.” Create, innovate, nurture. The day wakes up a little brighter. A spark of kindness rises from ash and we bask in the glow. A spark of curiosity dazzles and we follow the brilliance. A spark of hope has healing powers. That thing about not hiding your light? Don’t forget it. Tend the kindling, fan the flames, look for the light. You’re combustible, you’re an inferno, you burn with love and light beyond anything you could have imagined.

Trust Your Face to a Specialist The Lowcountry Lid Lift® is our unique approach to eyelid rejuvenation. It involves a skillfully performed upper and usually lower eyelid surgical procedure to remove excess fat and skin, with carefully hidden incisions. Age related volume loss, dark circles and wrinkling can be further enhanced by stimulating natural collagen synthesis with Sculptra®.
Sculptra® restores youthful volume to the face. It may be used alone or in combination with surgery. Dr. Funcik is one of the country’s pioneers, using Sculptra® on the first day it became available in the U.S. He travels the country training other Board Certified Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists in the advanced use of Sculptra®.

SKIRT! THIS M O N T H We consider ourselves so very lucky to be part of the creative team that works on skirt! every month for so many reasons:The work that is creatively challenging, the products that arrive at our door to try, the ideas and kudos we get in our email inboxes every day. But what really tops our Luck List are the extraordinary people we get to meet, up close and personal, and ask the questions that casual conversations rarely allow.Where do your ideas come from? Where did that idea come from? How did you get from A to Z? When did the light bulb come on? Where did you get that spark?? We’re fascinated by the origin of creative “a-ha” moments (thanks, Oprah!). We want to understand the source, because the whole process seems just so darn magical. But it’s always the same: It’s work. Hard work.Yes, there’s the brilliant light bulb “I just had the best idea” moment, but more often it’s a series of moments, stops and starts, tries and fails, test, tweak, test again. In this issue, we’re featuring folks who we consider “Makers.” They all have one thing in common: Making things happen. From building homes for people who need them, to running for office in a male-dominated political climate, to facing down a recession and coming up with a new definition of what work looks like. We all have a spark—hell, we all have About the Cover Artist a million of them. We’re inspired in little ways every Ali Douglass lives in Asheville, North Carolina. Her awardsingle day. What matters is what we do to fan that winning work has been used by flame. Sometimes it’s supporting someone else’s clients including MasterCard, American Girl, Georgia-Pacific, ideas (hello, Kickstarter). Sometimes it’s getting The Wall Street Journal and other people to support ours. But the brilliant more. alidouglass.com thing is that sparks beget sparks…when one burns down to ash, it makes room for the others to ignite. Burn, baby, burn!

Two stones, Two twigs, Plus Flint and dry sticks. Just add friction. (I know, right?) Throw in passion. An idea. A dash of hope. A heap of hard work. A pencil and paper (and a sprinkle of time). A chisel and a stone. Flour and water. Metal and a mallet. Create your own magic. Create your own inferno. Careful. With great power comes great sparks.

Cameron O’Connor is Helping to Build Futures.
As site supervisor for Charleston Habitat for Humanity, Cameron leads building projects and teams of volunteers to construct homes for people who couldn’t otherwise afford housing. The former Montana whitewater rafting guide and Wheaton College grad (business and economics) found his job at Habitat through a Craigslist posting in 2013—with no construction experience.“I spent a year as an apprentice to learn everything I could about construction and home building,” says Cameron. “Now I teach other people how to do it…it’s incredibly fulfilling.” Three of four homes built by Habitat are for single mothers, and part of Cameron’s job is to get more women to participate in home building projects, particularly the annual National Women Build week in March, sponsored by Lowe’s. “You don’t have to have any construction knowledge to participate and volunteers get this amazing out of the box learning experience from foundation to roof…and the satisfaction of providing long-term shelter for families who need it.” Considering picking up a hammer and joining a volunteer crew? and just when you thought waffles were for breakfast. Meet the Belgian street waffle. Are they good? No, they are amazing.
LA GAUFRE
Louis and Lila bake their Belgian street waffles from scratch once or twice weekly (for now!), 12 or 16 waffles to a box. The soft, doughy goodness, accented with bits of melted sugar, are delicious plain, warm or cold. The waffles last for up to a week (no refrigeration needed, reheat in microwave or toaster oven).
COMING SOON: BELGIAN STREET WAFFLES COOKED ON A BIKE!
Lauryn Sykes
Louis and his sister Lila Castellano were inspired to share their dad’s from-scratch recipe for authentic Belgian street waffles, starting with pop-up street shops for La Guafre. La Gaufre is short for La Gaufre de Mon Père, meaning “My dad’s waffle.”
The street waffles have been so popular; Louis has plans to outfit his bicycle with a waffle maker so they can pedal to peddle their tasty waffles!

Judy Dixon | Making Better Products
When the recession hit a few years ago, architect Judy Dixon—then a principal at Stubbs Muldrow Herin and mother of two—decided to take her design skills to the next level, launching Rush3 Product Design Studio with her husband and creating their first product, the award-winning Kebo® Bottle Opener. The onehanded bottle opener was a hit, which led to their next product: Munch Stix®, chopsticks inspired by her own kids that are shaped like a shark, alligator and a pterodactyl. “Our wheelhouse is design,” says Judy, “but we jumped in to the biz development and marketing and really created a family business.” Even though Judy and her husband are still full-time architects with their own firm, Rush-Dixon Architects, the design studio allows them to redefine what work looks like in a post-recession economy. With their Kebo and Munch Stix success, new products aren’t far behind. “Earlier in my life, I wouldn’t have done something I didn’t already know how to do, but now I’m comfortable winging it and testing new products,” she says. “Someone once told me that an entrepreneur is someone who jumps out of an airplane and makes a parachute on the way down. I love that.” We do too. Read more about Rush3 Products at Rush3Studio.com.

Ginny Deerin | Making a Run For It
Ginny Deerin once donned a pair of wings and danced and dialed for dollars on the corner of Calhoun and King for 28 hours. Her nonprofit,WINGS for Kids— which provides after school programs for social and emotional development—had a deficit. She was driven by the children’s needs, and the standard they set. “They can be so bold and joyful and powerful. It’s just when people get older that life starts making you afraid.” But finding inspiration is one thing. “Part two is to get the nerve up to step out on it.” She shed her fear of looking ridiculous and, shimmying through sunshine and rain, she raised $122,000. Now, in lieu of dancing, Ginny is running—for Secretary of State. She seeks to inspire other women to be the leading ladies in their lives, whether that means jumping on the campaign trail or picking up a paintbrush. “You get wings when you decide you want to have them.” Read more about Ginny at Ginny4sos.com and make sure you’re registered to vote ahead of the November 4 election!

PETER COHEN
Born in Zimbabwe in 1960, Los Angelesbased fashion designer Peter Cohen has Though his clothes hang in exclusive boutiques and the closets of well-known women, including Angela Bassett and Anne Heche, Cohen remains low profile. In 2001, The L.A. Times called Cohen “that rare designer who assiduously dodges the spotlight. No logos. No brash signatures.”
been creating classic pieces under his namesake label for 25 years. He’s known for the simplicity of his designs— all fashioned from luxury fabrics that originate in Switzerland and Italy but are American-made in California. We love these instant classics, particularly his fall collection, with a focus on coats and dresses in understated colors like charcoal, plum, navy and black. Cohen’s minimalist pieces are designed to accentuate the quality of the material and you’ll find his name on shopping pages of just about any magazine featuring an article on the “five fashion pieces that must live in your closet forever.” Stylistically long lasting, relaxed, and genuinely lovely.
RTW in Charleston has been carrying Cohen’s clothing for years, in case we needed expert opinion reinforcement that the Peter Cohen coat we spent most of a paycheck on will be as classically beautiful in 20 years as it is today. RTW 186 King Street Charleston

Evidently, while we 25- to 80-somethings have been busy getting our first job or that latest promotion, supporting our kids through college, readying our lives for retirement, or enjoying the quiet days we’d been saving for, the planet has completely changed.

he first time anyone called me a Digital Immigrant, I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever heard. The whole idea kept me chuckling for weeks, until I realized it was true and became inspired to try to catch up. Unfortunately, after many years as a U. S. citizen—without moving a single mile from home, I had become an immigrant in a new world. And if you were born before 1995, you are, too. At least that is how the tech-guru at my school, using a term from Palfrey and Gassers’ book Born Digital, now refers to teachers who aren’t 22 and straight out of a university. Evidently, while we 25- to 80-somethings have been busy getting our first job or that latest promotion, supporting our kids through college, readying our lives for retirement, or enjoying the quiet days we’d been saving for, the planet has completely changed. Technology has moved in and given us a new world—not a “Yes, of course, I can use a computer” world but a “My computer is attached to my hand at all times” world. And those of us who spend time “learning to use” the latest techno-toys are indeed immigrants into the world of technology that has completely absorbed the natives, a.k.a. anyone under 20 or so. These natives, said to have been born with the computer gene, use technology as a part of the very air they breathe. In fact, they can’t really even be said to USE technology; they ARE technology. It flows from their brains and their fingertips as easily as many of us first slid our hands around a steering wheel while perched on our dad’s lap. If today you find yourself like Alice, tumbling through a curious Wonderland of tweets, texts, Instagrams, blogs, and FB friends, treat yourself kindly and realize you’re now in a completely different country, with an e-passport required. Face it: if you had moved to Guatemala or Germany or Thailand, you would know to give yourself time to learn the language and the culture of your new home. But the good news would be that while you were learning how to buy bread at the local market, the language wouldn’t be evolving as fast as you could say pan or Brot. In this new world, however, we find ourselves flying by our coattails over terrain that shifts completely while we’re still trying to find time to register online for our next non-credit computer class. The situation is not just scary; for many, it’s terrifying, much like the fear an ancient generation felt when the printing press made books available to almost anyone. Suddenly young people of the 15th century could just read stories instead of having to memorize them? What was the world coming to? Recently, a 30-year-old friend of mine, Nathan, was helping his fiancée Rachel babysit her nephews, aged five months and three years. Waking from a nap, the baby looked at his brother playing a game on an iPad and began to scream uncontrollably. Rachel and Nathan didn’t know what to do. Without even looking up, the toddler brother calmly said, “He wants the iPad.” They didn’t believe him, but the infant kept screaming. Being a one-iPad family (because even though they’re relatively young, they’re still immigrants!), they improvised. Like
the engineer he is, Nathan got a piece of white poster board, drew a screen with small squares under it, and put it in front of the baby, who instantly calmed down and happily poked at the cardboard buttons with his pudgy fingers. Ridiculous? As outrageous as that scene sounds, look around your table the next time you’re in a restaurant. Parents across the country are managing to have a pleasant evening out with their children because kids of all ages are staring at bright little screens while the adults talk, maybe to each other or maybe to an invisible person on the other end of a phone. So, fellow non-millennials, what do we do? Give up and go back to pen and paper? Your grandchildren may not even know what those are! As a public school teacher, I watch the natives write notes on their iPads and take pictures of their algebra homework or vocabulary words with their phones. Almost every week they ask me about a new app while I’m still trying to find time to master my first smart phone. I write in cursive on the board, and the kids can’t read it. It’s an antiquated skill because they never write. They type everything, whether they txt it or SWIPE it or spell it out the long, boring way—in Standard English. A couple of weeks ago, my students were teasing me because I didn’t recognize the name of a current singer. They immediately Googled him and played one of his songs for me. I asked them to imagine what life will be like when they have grandkids. That generation will probably be saying things like, “Wow! You guys had to use PHONES? We just touch pinky fingers and instantly know.” My students smiled indulgently, not at all realizing that their phones will, of course, become obsolete as soon as smaller possibilities come along. And by the time they’re my age, they will have seen MANY changes in ways to remind themselves of a shopping list or tell someone “ilu.” They may even wind up asking “What is this world coming to?” The millennials’ writing habits are changing in part due to new attitudes toward time. Writing anything by hand simply takes too long—especially if the words have archaic silent letters (think about “through” or “night”). But even as an immigrant and a career English teacher, I find myself thinking the same thing. I text notes to myself instead of writing them on yellow Post-Its (my mainstay for the past couple of decades) and do my best to remember to take photos of documents instead of carefully writing down the information. The difference is that I have to remind myself to go for my phone, trying to be cool, to fit in with this century. The kids, on the other hand, think of the phones first and do something different only when a dinosaur like me insists. Philip Roth says we’re “living in the era of the screen.” What an immigrant! Natives never think like this; they’re too caught up in using the screen to talk about it. They might as well comment on the breath they take or the fingers at the end of their hands. Phones have joined the category of things that are taken completely for granted and are worth talking about only if they’re not there! I learn every day from my 17-year-old English students. Is someone in your life teaching you? If not, find a young person NOW. If she’s willing to look away from the two-inch screens long enough to help, you’ll be one step closer to techno-acculturation. True, immigrants will never actually catch up, but if we keep our fingers dancing as fast as they can, we may start feeling less like foreigners in our own homes. And that’ll be a beautiful thing.

“I decided that I was a feminist....Why has the word become such an unpopular one? I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.”
