Cindy does.

As a science teacher at Mason Preparatory School, Cindy’s students do many experiments and hands-on activities, but as often as possible, she loves to get them out of the classroom to “learn in the Lowcountry.” Cindy Renkas Mason Preparatory School 56 Halsey Blvd. Charleston 843.723.0664 masonprep.org

Extracurricular activities include coordinating student-with-parent family science outings on weekends to see science in action. “I love the educational enrichment opportunities it provides for students, their parents, and me. Plus, I get to know my students outside of the classroom, and get to learn current, authentic science from those in the field.” On her first visit to Summerville’s International Primate Protection League, Cindy fell for the petite primates and now spends summers and school breaks volunteering. Sans field trip, Cindy encourages even the non-enrolled to support IPPL—by volunteering or even “adopting” a gibbon (ippl.org). And after nearly 20 adventurous relocations around the globe, Cindy knows life can get a little hairy, but Lucey Mortgage received much more than a passing grade on their progress report. “Lorcan and his team were absolutely fantastic in guiding me through what had become a very complicated process of selling one house and buying another. I liked and trusted them so much that my son and daughter-in-law are now using them for the purchase of their first house!”

We Still Recommend… All Women Age 40 & older get An AnnuAl mAmmogrAm

Breast cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer-related death among American women. This form of cancer is unusual because White women are more likely to get the disease, but African American women have a 39% higher rate of dying from breast cancer.* The good news is, the earlier breast cancer is detected the easier it is to treat. That’s why the American Cancer Society recommends all women age 40 and older have a mammogram once a year. Ladies, make sure all of the women you love get their yearly mammogram. To schedule your mammogram at one of our five locations, call 402-5000. *South Carolina Statistics, 2010 DHEC report

Life may not have its own index of help topics, but the instruction manual for a new bathroom faucet certainly does. Learn the lessons that come with the territory: Some outcomes are clear—is the water running… without any leaks? Other results aren’t as immediately obvious—are geraniums allergic to me? Take what opportunity you have to mess it up, muck it up, make it up as you go along. I find that happiness is learning a new skill, whether it’s building a floral oasis with Robin, button-making at SpaceCraft with Allison, or twinetying 100 invitations with Sarah. Dig, cut and craft your way to an inspiring autumn. This month, make time to create. Make room for a pet, and create a new family. Make a zine, and create a space for your voice. Make a promise to vote, and create our future together.

“If couples want to stay together they must learn to treasure what they love least about each other.”

Giulietta Nardone

40  octoberw2012

charleston.skirt.com

My Messy Marriage

My husband Jimmy and I only argue about one thing. My mess. I love to park stuff at the end of the dining room table: newspaper clippings, books, quotes, notes to self, photos, magazines, doodles, essay ideas, greeting cards, song lyrics, to-do lists. It’s my Everest of ideas. Typically, the teetering mound of paper debris gets larger and larger until it creeps into the center of the table and beyond. That’s when the previews start for the upcoming husband-wife dust-up. “Can you please clean up the table?” Jimmy asks in a loving voice. “Sure,” I mumble, knowing I have no intention of doing it. Unless marital push comes to shove, I can’t part with my idea pile. It’s a sacred place, consecrated creative ground. It’s fuel for the beast in my life-asartist belly. In my work as a creativity activist, I piece old ideas together in new ways. The junk mountain on the table acts as a fountain of inspiration. It feeds me essay material scribbled on scraps of paper, oil painting scenes imagined from books, and workshop concepts sparked from collaged quotes. It’s hard for the neat to understand that my desire to heap comes from my desire to create, solve, and inspire. Drawers are not friends. When I stuff my insights into those big, black furniture holes, they cease to exist. The lopsided mound may look like stratified layers of refuse. But nothing could be further from the truth. I can stick my hand into the slush pile and pull out exactly what I need. I have a kind of intuitive radar. Conversely, Jimmy needs the items in our home to have a place. He’s got everything relegated to a distinct latitude and longitude. He knows that the needle-nose pliers used to fix electrical outlets live in the black toolbox on shelf next to the dryer. He knows that the scissors with the blue handle live in the kitchen drawer next to the dishwasher. He knows that the AA batteries for the computer mouse live in the storage bin under the printer. He’s an architect. I’m a muse. His work requires him to be orderly and precise. My work requires me to be loose and whimsical. He brings up my “rapidly expanding detritus” several times over the next three weeks, until not as lovingly he says, “I want this mess cleaned up by this weekend or I’m not going to karaoke.” “Sure,” I say, knowing I will not do this. And I don’t. Days pass. On Friday evening all marital hell breaks loose. My herd of ideas has migrated onto his placemat. Jimmy’s orderliness threshold has been breached. He has reached his table clutter breaking point. I know what’s coming. Still, I refuse to budge. In three fell swoops, Jimmy takes my precious collection and drops it onto the kitchen floor proclaiming, “I live here, too.” Thud. Bonk. Plop. I try to catch the twirling papers, yelling, “No, no, those are important. Those are potential paintings. Those are potential essays. Those are potential workshops.” It pains me to see my brainstorms flutter into the air, slide under the refrigerator or moisten in the cat’s bowl. He can’t comprehend why I don’t use the desk and file drawers he bought and set-up for me. He doesn’t understand the allure of flat surfaces. He believes the dining room table should be reserved for gastronomical pleasures. I want to wrestle for use of the entire table. I want to mark my territory by smearing the papers over every inch of its glass top. I want to shout, “Don’t ever touch my stash again.” But I don’t. I can’t imagine life without my husband, who is my muse. He’s got the observational skills of Sherlock Holmes. He knows exactly what’s out of place if I’m struggling with a painting or an essay. Finally, I pledge to purge. I grab a brown-paper grocery bag and plunk myself down on the kitchen floor. I sort my creative dowry into “save” and “discard.” I let go of month-old clippings on the Chinese economy, rafting trips down the Amazon and to-do lists that never got done. I whittle the pile down until it once again fits at the end of the dining room table. Jimmy sees his placemat clear of debris and says, “Thank you.” He’s happy again. And so am I, knowing that tomorrow brings new opportunities to cut more things out of newspapers, to rip more things out of magazines and to grow my idea pile big and strong again. An older, long-married friend once told me, “If couples want to stay together they must learn to treasure what they love least about each other.” Jimmy’s keep-the-household-orderly makes me crazy. My keep-the-householdmessy makes him crazy. We alternately loosen and tighten each other up. It’s what makes us good for each other. Giulietta Nardone founded The Off Center For Wild and Disobedient Creativity in Ashland, Massachusetts. On the weekends, she can be found hiking in the woods or singing at karaoke nights with her husband, Jimmy.

MY CHARLESTON OCTOBER

.

October. October is the month when fall really starts to feel like fall, and in Charleston that is reason enough for celebration. It’s easy to forget such blissful weather exists in the steaminess of our never-ending summer, but maybe that’s why Charlestonians seem to appreciate fall more than most. Chilly evening walks around the neighborhood, crisp morning bike rides, pumpkins at markets and butternut squash in any and every dish; I love everything about fall. It’s the time when I find myself with a renewed inspiration—to create, to travel, to be active, to wake up early and to make ideas become realities.

Stoll’s Alley is one of the prettiest alleyways in Charleston.

Plum breakfast cake with a giant mug of coffee makes for a luxurious brunch with friends.

Nothing says October more than bright orange pumpkins.

Colorful mums feel nostalgic for me, as my mom bought them to welcome fall when I was little.

Fall is the time to explore narrow alleyways, discover roadside markets with pumpkins and mums, and cozy up in your home with open windows and lots of blankets.

Weekend in Savannah.

this month I love

The aesthetics of Savannah lends itself perfectly to the spirit of fall—it’s moody and gorgeous, with Spanish moss draping along the streets and live oaks framing every pathway. Long meandering walks are best in the fall, and with 22 squares (each with its own park), Savannah makes for a wonderful walking city. My sister recently started school at SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design, and it has opened my eyes to this beautiful city (that is an easy two-hour drive from Charleston).

1. Ocean sunsets on Sunday. 2. Impromptu brunch. 3. Buttermilk ice cream and lemon cookie sandwich at the Gin Joint. 4. Making the switch (finally) from iced coffee to hot coffee. 5. Weekend trips. 6. Sippin’ Saturdays at Irvin-House Vineyards. 7. Dinner inspiration from the new Sprouted Kitchen cookbook. 8. Huge cozy sweaters, even if they aren’t yet entirely necessary. 9. Late afternoon neighborhood walks. 10. The new (Charleston’s own) Shovels & Rope album, O’ Be Joyful.

An entire wall covered in greenery? Be still my heart!

700 Drayton is elegant and funky—leopard-print chairs and a peaceful sunroom.

Tybee Island is a great beach and just a short drive from downtown Savannah.

The endless, impossibly romantic Spanish moss.

“Fall is a short season in Charleston, and October is a time for the season to truly be cherished. Chilly weather is a much-needed change after our endless summer and with that weather comes new inspiration and lots of positive energy.”

He’s So Original

Crosby Jack Sackett is an artistic activist. No doubt you’ve spotted Crosby’s colorful work on a local walkabout—murals in Avondale, JLINSNIDER, Café Kronic, and a mural and large-scale pieces at Earth Fare to boot. But it’s his deep respect for sharing a message that often has him teaching zine workshops or leading painting lessons for others. “I recognize that art, in a visual society, is power, and as an artist, I am directly responsible for the work that I am submitting into my surroundings.” On top of wielding spray paint and stencils, Crosby holds words in high esteem, too. “Creating a zine doesn’t need publishers, editors, or gobs of money to create. Ideas should be free, but the means we use to spread the ideas cost money, so zines are the cheapest and most economical way of proliferating ideas.” Meet Crosby and create your own zine with him at Southeast Zine Fest on October 20 at Redux Contemporary Art Center. What do you like about wearing a skirt? “It’s very liberating and breezy!” What do you like about reading skirt! Magazine? “skirt! consistently conveys a positive, inspirational message of self and social awareness. The layout and graphic design is fun too!” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach 46  octoberw2012

SKIRT! IN THE KITCHEN OCTOBER

Tricia Hitopoulos

Everyday Gourmet 1303 Ben Sawyer Blvd., #6, Mount Pleasant 843.388.2490 •shopeverydaygourmet.com

What is the best compliment a customer ever paid you?

“Your food and service has

transformed

How do you unwind after catering a late party? Legs and feet up and a feel-good movie or an Epson salt bath depending on the event. Most delicious way to get your veggies in for the day: Silky Gazpacho Soup.

What’s your motto? Rules are made to be broken.

Shoes I wear in the kitchen:

my life.

Sauconys or cowboy boots. Favorite countries to travel to when you’re researching new menus?

What time does your alarm clock go off? When the birds start chirping.

Spain, Belgium and Italy.

Must-try entree: Mac and Cheese Soufflé.

What’s the secret to your success in terms of healthy food that tastes good? Know the ingredient, never flavor with salt but salt just enough to bring out the flavor.

Eye-popping savory pie: My famous tomato pie.

Best nibble? Ah, the Pimento Cheese Biscuit, half-dollar size, with pimento cheese.

Best dessert to have with a glass of red wine? Wild berry cobbler with gorgonzola and pecans.

A typical daily special: Grilled Chicken Breast over Angel Hair Pasta with Goat Cheese.

In-shop surprises: We have great hostess gifts and artful accessories for your kitchen.

Best seasonal dish? Sauté of Brussels Sprouts and our Tomato Pie.

5 Things you’ve learned about running a catering business? 1)Who, what, when, where and budget. 2) There are more details than crossing Ts and dotting Is. 3) Anticipate the worst, stay calm and serve more alcohol (eg, sprinkler system goes off just before the guest of honor arrives!). 4) Delegate. 5) No job is finished until you receive rave compliments from the client as well as the location manager. Why the name Everyday Gourmet? We offer something for everyone! We have kid-friendly comfort food for the family and simple catering food like barbecue, but we also do highend dinner parties or haute catering events. I want people to say “That looks incredible!” without them having to do the work.

How do you choose your weekly menu items?

I look at the pictures and temperature for the week on my iPhone weather app. Then I’m off to my sister’s for family dinner where she and the others let me make up my menu on her laptop while everyone around me is preparing, discussing, laughing, arguing and cleaning, all around me. That’s how it’s done. If someone forgets to order, which dishes do you keep on hand for lastminute dinners? Salmon with our sun-dried tomato vinaigrette, since even children like it, or grilled chicken, assortment of salads and any one of our casserole staples. Depends on the customer and how well I know them!

Five restaurants on your bucket list:

Harry’s Bar, Venice The French Laundry, San Francisco Charlie Trotter’s, Chicago NOMA, Copenhagen Piazza Duomo, Alba, Italy charleston.skirt.com

I hope I’m lucky enough to have a hospice volunteer when I am at the end of my own journey...

Stacy Appel

T

he gift she brought was modest in appearance—a faded white wicker basket, whose handle had seen better days, filled with little string-bound packets, sprigs and cuttings. Inside were bay leaves, thyme, some eucalyptus pods which resembled little brown bells. A vanilla bean, dark and stringy, along with a sprig of mint leaves and another from a basil plant. Feathery fronds of tarragon, fennel, dill, a long, spiky strand of rosemary and a cluster of purple lavender stalks tied with a silky ribbon. One fat, bumpy elbow of ginger root, and a tiny linen bag full of rose petals. An array of dried bergamot flowers tucked into a fold of green tissue paper. At the bottom of the basket, thick brown sticks of cinnamon curled next to rough-edged peelings of lemon and orange. By the time she brought the basket to Edward, he could no longer speak or hold anything in his hands, but he could still sit partway up in bed, so she held each fragrance under his nose, watching him breathe as deeply as he could manage. Once or twice his mouth changed, as if trying to form a smile. And when she moved the lavender away to pick up a different scent, Edward clutched her wrist and brought her hand back to his face so he could inhale the fragrance again. He

The Art of Goodbye

had already said goodbye, more or less, to driving, his health, his daughters and nephews, full meals. Now she could help him say farewell to nature, one smell at a time. Over the years I’ve met artists, musicians, people who write poetry or books for a living, teach ballet, or sew costumes. But the most unselfconsciously creative people I’ve encountered are those who decide to volunteer for hospice. They don’t realize they’re artists. They think of themselves as normal folks wanting to lend a hand to someone in need, or give back in kind to an organization which once helped a friend or family member. Some volunteers hope to find out more about what dying is like, or have a medical background and want to use it without the confines of a paid job. No one seems to think he or she is extraordinary. But if you could listen in on a hospice team meeting, or attend a volunteer gathering, you’d be struck by all the imaginative and resourceful ways a human being can think up to help another at the end. One terminally ill patient, fixated on seeing the film Dancing With Wolves before he died, wasn’t able to leave the house except for his sporadic trips to the doctor. Grant, his volunteer, understood that time was running out and found a van to get Sam to the local theater, a complicated, medically unadvised feat involving the help of several people. Then Grant took Sam to lunch and afterward surprised his patient with a visit to the zoo, so he could see a real wolf and listen to it howl. Sam talked about this special day right up until his death, as if the two had made a long pilgrimage to Lourdes. Sometimes the artistry sounds ordinary, but it only seems that way. A bed-bound mother of three with myeloma was anguished about her messy house, the chores she could no longer do for her husband and children. Her emotional torment wasn’t simply about the housework, of course, but her hospice volunteer, Cherie, listened carefully to every word of distress. The volunteer training program had never once mentioned cleaning, but Cherie made it her business to clean the entire house while her patient was napping. She began by changing all the kids’ beds and putting weeks’ worth of toys away, washing pots and sorting laundry, making soup, cutting flowers from the garden for the kitchen table and living room. She took trash out to the bins in back and swept floors. She finished by vacuuming rugs and straightening the sickroom. The young mother awoke from a deep sleep to a house entirely in order; she cried when Cherie described in detail what each room looked like now. “I can feel it,” the mother said. “It feels like my home again.” They both sat and listened to the house for a while. The originality of these parting gifts, and the intelligent creativity involved—all the myriad colors and textures of thoughtfulness—outshine any museum installation or Tony Award-winning play. Volunteers help to fashion farewells in ways which are deeply personal, whether they’re arranging an outing to a shell-covered beach remembered from childhood, or engineering a phone call to an estranged son so he can say goodbye to his father. Sometimes the art is concrete: a collage of silly honeymoon photos or a recording of the grandkids giggling. Sometimes the tableau is a lavish bedside birthday party planned at the last minute, complete with friends, cards and an ice cream cake. A writer pal with breast cancer had her fond dream made real, thanks to those who found the time to make it happen: a call from musician Judy Collins, who sang “Amazing Grace” to her over the phone on the day my friend died. Rules are bent or broken, airlines are lied to, favorite poems unearthed and videos made. Sometimes the art of goodbye requires just sitting quietly together, doing nothing at all. I hope I’m lucky enough to have a hospice volunteer when I am at the end of my own journey, which will of course be hundreds of years from now. Who else will know to find the Johnny Clegg CD with the song “Dela”and play it for me, or read a chapter out loud from C.S. Lewis’ The Horse and His Boy? Only a volunteer will have the inside knowledge needed to recite a Rumi poem to me as I drift in and out of sleep, or make sure I taste a last piece of chocolate-covered taffy from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, before I expire. My volunteer will return the huge stack of library books piled up in my living room and will have the foresight to absolutely forbid the neighbors down the street from using an electric leaf-blower until I take my very last breath. Who else will be thoughtful enough to write a note on my behalf to Julia Cameron, bless her heart, and tell her I really hated doing “morning pages,” though everyone else loved them? And who will know to find a freshly cut gardenia to float in a bowl of water on my bedside table? Note to self: Do not wait for the volunteer. Meet the Makers

Sarah Reed | Paper Princess Although Sarah’s a Lowcountry native, it was when she returned from college that the city really began to speak to her. “I was thrilled to find a welcoming and inspiring creative scene here. I just think it was kismet that I happened to call Charleston my hometown, that I love paper, twine and ribbon, and have a knack for all things wedding and design.” Although she’s happy elbows deep in crafting supplies, Sarah admits it doesn’t always go as planned. “One of my challenges is when I’m completely inspired but gluing that metal thing to that wood thing just is not working the way I planned. Attempting to execute the fabulous image in my head can be a frustrating process.” In the biz for three years, Sarah’s Dodeline Design collection of stationery, greeting cards and invitations is sold in local shops, online and at craft fairs, and soon-to-be-seen at her new I’On shop.

Meet the Makers

Robin Smith | The Power of Flowers For Robin, the route to her dream job working and beautifying the grounds at MUSC’s campus began with planting pansies with her family at age eight. Now her days are a mix of meetings and landscape plans, as well as “the occasional tractor riding and sandbagging for hurricane season.” Managing 80 acres of college and hospital land in a downtown setting has its particular challenges, but Robin’s goal is to make you forget where you are. “I want MUSC to feel like a downtown Charleston backyard, somewhere people can walk around, take a deep breath, clear their heads and maybe even smile.” And those smiles are a welcome break for patients and their families. “I received a call last spring from a friend of a cancer patient. She said her friend lit up instantly when she would pull onto the grounds of MUSC. The best part of hospital visits was driving up to all of the flowers.” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach

Meet the Makers

Allison Merrick | Aha! Curator Cracking one’s head open, in the creative sense, is what Allison aims to do for you. It’s what she says happened to her after attending the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada for nine years. “Participating in Burning Man taught me extreme survival skills, extreme self-expression, and extreme D.I.Y.” While living on the West Coast, she saw the beginnings of popular hands-on learning storefronts—“from gorgeous yarn shops, to sewing lounges, to makerspaces.” Now in Charleston, she’s opened a similar spot tucked in Avondale. SpaceCraft is brimming with materials, tools and trimming for projects (you can rent the space out for a party or work by the hour solo), as well as a class schedule and locally made items for sale if your version of DIY = local buy. “I just felt in my gut that I needed to create my own work, and that I wanted to look back in 20 years and see a life that I built.” Photo by Alice Keeney

Knitting is reliable—the right number of stitches in the right combination produces a predictable pattern when the events around you have none.

I

Perdita Buchan

t was July on the Jersey shore and I was living in a house full of strangers with a two-year-old child, a dog, and a husband who was about to leave for North Dakota without me, the child, or the dog. As I sat on the bedroom floor—baby asleep in the crib, dog lying on my feet—rummaging through a backpack full of papers to be sure nothing crucial went to North Dakota, I found the knitting pattern. I recognized it as an old pattern from my mother’s collection, a child’s short-sleeved pullover with a choice of borders: teddy bears, Scotties or ducks. I studied it. If I could just get hold of wool and needles, I could knit it for the baby, my daughter. I could make it long-sleeved for the coming fall when I hoped to be back in Vermont, even adapt the three borders into an overall pattern. That seemed at once the best idea I’d ever had and the most important thing I could do at that desperate moment. The house full of strangers called itself a commune, which meant chores were shared. I volunteered eagerly for the next marketing trip; just maybe there might be a wool shop in the run-down shore town that was home to the supermarket. Parking the communal VW in the supermarket lot, I went looking. When I found the dingy little craft shop it was as though I had dreamed it into being. I had the pattern in my bag, just in case. I bought the needles and the wool, dark green for the body, turquoise for the ribbing and the animals. That night, as everyone argued downstairs, I cast on stitches in the bright turquoise wool, knowing that I had a purpose, even if it was only to adapt this pattern and make this sweater. My young and glamorous mother taught me to knit when I was about five. Neither of my grandmothers were knitters: one was a writer, the other had studied to be an opera singer. One grew fabulous roses, the other wrote in long hand in spiral notebooks with a pen that she kept on a ribbon round her neck. My mother, more practical, turned out hats and gloves and cardigans in Fair Isle and other complex designs while I toiled over squares of loopy garter stitch. She had a book, Mary Thomas’s Knitting Book, and I was fascinated by the black and white photographs of swatches of pattern, like tiny landscapes with their ridges, and craters and rivers of cable. Even after I learned to read, the

patterns themselves were a gibberish of numbers and directions: “slip 1,” “psso,” “decrease one at the end of every 4th row,” “reverse all shapings.” Clearly, those little geographies also had their own language. My mother never needed more than an explanation of the stitch—using that, she could create patterns. Although over time I became a competent knitter, I could never match her ability. If she sometimes used printed patterns, I never saw her study one. When I knit, I wear the patterns to pieces because I must constantly refer to them, mark my place, count rows and stitches. Our knitting habits reflected, to some extent, our attitudes to life. I did things by the book, my mother by instinct. When she thought it was time for me to return from an extended European sojourn, she sent me a quotation about expatriates from Nathaniel Hawthorne. “I knew you’d pay attention if it was from a book,” she said smugly when I returned. At that point, she was knitting Aran sweaters in a rough, cream-colored wool ordered from England. And I discovered that many of those stitches in Mary Thomas were symbolic: cables are fishing ropes, diamonds the mesh of nets, trellis means fields, basket stitch, the fisherman’s basket. The Aran islanders knitted the context of their lives into their work, and in a simpler way, I did too. I probably wouldn’t knit a kelly green and peacock blue baby sweater now, but in the Seventies I did just that, for a friend in Cambridge, Massachusetts. To think of it brings back hours in the library stacks, the raw cold of winter mornings, managing a fellowship and a three-year-old for whom I knitted socks in stripes of pink, red and orange, with heels and toes of the left-over peacock blue. A coral-colored baby sweater knitted for my cousin’s first adopted daughter recalls a weekend in a New York loft, clocks ignored, as we tried to help a baby adjust from Beijing to New York time. I knitted on the bus back to Boston as snow fell. I still have the remains of a cardigan chewed up by a family puppy. I could never mend it, but holding it brings back Scottish summers: tea in the glen, my daughter romping with her cousins, hillsides mauve with heather and the clear air filled with the anxious calls of sheep. In the last years of her life, my mother stopped knitting. She sat in the old wing chair, busy hands stilled. Macular degeneration had taken much of her eyesight and she resisted my efforts to set her up with thick wool and big needles, thinking she could knit by feel as she always had. All the things she had once loved had fallen away. She couldn’t read, didn’t want to listen to books on tape or classical music, she who had had regular subscriptions to the symphony and the opera. Even her great joy in plants and flowers had dimmed. “Beautiful,” she would murmur when I brought roses from my garden, but they didn’t seem to cheer her. Actually, she seldom said anything. We all found ourselves asking a lot of questions to try to provoke a response. She would answer “I don’t know” until the questioner gave up. “Too many questions,” she told me with a sigh. So I started a knitting project to get myself through the slow and silent hours, a blue Quaker stitch cardigan for her baby great grandson. Each day, she watched me pull the tangle of wool and needles out of my bag. “It’s coming along,” she would say. And smile. She watched me as I, a child, had once watched her. My fingers were not so nimble, nor the work so effortless. Sometimes the mistakes I made seemed a symptom of my struggle to understand who she had become and why we were here in this tiny assisted-living apartment. My mother’s mental state was now as much a foreign country to me as the swatches in Mary Thomas’s Knitting Book had once been. Yet knitting was the border where we could still meet, the place where we recognized each other. A piece of knitting progresses surely, even when life’s progress is halting or halted. My mother must have begun knitting seriously when her life in England was upended by the Second World War, as I had knitted feverishly in that long gone, topsy-turvy July. Knitting is reliable—the right number of stitches in the right combination produces a predictable pattern when the events around you have none. I knitted those last months spent with my mother into the little blue sweater, as surely as the Aran islanders knitted the fields, the nets, the hopedfor baskets of fish into their work. If it survives to another generation, I like to think it will carry her with it.

Grief had turned me into an obsessive-compulsive pie-baking lunatic.

G

Amy Vansant

rief is a master of disguise. Like a vampire, it drains your self-respect until you’re openly sobbing in the grocery store because they’re out of spray butter. It masquerades as a hypnotist, fixing your gaze on one small patch of sofa for days. It is a ninja, ambushing as you walk into a room that used to feel less empty. Sometimes, grief is a pastry chef. Divorce and a string of family deaths had made it a hard year for me. Trying to recreate my Great-Grandmom’s apple pie recipe seemed a proactive way to break my slide into depression. Every birthday and Christmas dinner of my childhood ended with Great-Grandmom’s apple pie, and these were all happy times, unless you were hoping for cake. If you wanted cake, you were out of luck until my brother’s birthday. Grief had planted that seed in my head. I realized that somewhere around pie number thirteen. I had Great-Grandmom’s recipe folded and tucked in my recipe box. After years of cajoling, my Mom-Mom, her daughter-in-law, had finally gotten it out of the old lady. Great-Grandmom got soft and threw up the white flag in the form of an apple pie recipe. Ha. Great-Grandmom’s kitchen was rimmed with an impressive salt and pepper shaker collection, filled with old cloth-calendars-turned-dish-towels, and covered by an asbestos tile floor, but you’d be hard pressed to find a white flag anywhere. When Mom-Mom danced off with the coveted recipe, Great-Grandmom smoothed out her house dress with her impossibly large German hands, sat down at her chrome-legged kitchen table, and laughed herself silly. She might as well as given Mom-Mom directions for Shepherd’s Pie, for all that slip of paper had in common with the real apple pie recipe.

Introducing KöR Whitening Deep Bleaching is the newest, most revolutionary and effective teeth whitening system ever developed. Unlike typical teeth whitening procedures:

4th Annual Ladies Night

THURSDAY • OCTOBER 18TH 6:30 till 9:30PM MASON PREP GYM

KöR Whitening is so effective; it is the only recognized system in the world that will even whiten tetracycline (dark) stained teeth, previously thought to be impossible.

With easy periodic at-home maintenance your teeth will stay white permanently, even while you continue to drink red wine, tea, coffee, etc.

During the whitening process nearly all patients experience only low to typically no teeth sensitivity.

This procedure is comfortable and 100% safe for your teeth and gums. The result is a radiantly white, natural appearing smile that you will LOVE! It is perfect for everyone, from 14 to 90!

Welcome ALLISON

You know us. You know we have very exacting standards. You rely on it. Sugaring depends on the all-natural sugar, lemon and water paste but so much more on the therapist practicing this ancient Egyptian art. We are awfully proud to say that after an enormous effort on her part, we are thrilled to introduce our newest sugaring artist: she’s simply lovely and we are so proud to have her.

As I write this, it’s getting dark earlier, but we’re still in some

boots, but shorts and cotton skirts seem all wrong.

This not-summer/not-winter confuses me and makes me irritable.

It’s too much like the pause between endings and beginnings when

every day you wake up in some state of in-between.

Where you have to let go of one

thing in order to hop on another, like that stutter when you get to the end of a walking sidewalk and you’re not quite airborne and not quite earthbound.

Those times of

change

when you know forward is the right direction, but the

past won’t quite let you go.

I’ve been looking forward to the movie adaptation of Kerouac’s On the Road for so long that I’m bound to be disappointed, but I’ll still see it. It’s one of my favorite books because it speaks directly to some unrealized wild child in me.

When I feel overwhelmed by life or work or Mondays, I wish I had a pair of Doc Martens to give me some outward kickassery confidence.

This Martha Stewart sticker is one of the crafty, kitschy items from my Michaels binge. Like a magpie, I can’t resist bright shiny things even when they are totally useless.

Can’t stop playing “Somewhere” from Magic Hour, Scissor Sisters’ most recent album. The rest of the CD doesn’t grab me as much, but “Somewhere” will be on my walkingaround-NYC playlist.
