Almost out of breath after a drawn out season of crazy can-it-get-any-hotter days and sticky humid nights. Time to trade the wet towels and flip-flops for the rush of reading lists and back-to-school shopping, hopping, and always running late for work. Time to sing that bittersweet campfire song of a goodbye to the endless days. Hello, sharpened pencils. Welcome back, wool. Salutations, pumpkin spiced lattes. We’ve missed you too. But before we let go, let’s take a moment to catch our breath, take in the last of summer, and store those sunny memories away for when the Polar Vortex arrives. No sooner than our tan lines fade, we’ll dream in chlorine blue and neon yellow on those chilly nights that are just waiting for wood smoke. If summer is a contest, we’re champions of the tide. If summer is a game, we’re packing the pieces to put it back in the box. If summer is a marathon, fall is its finish line.

Chalk art byWhitney Barnard, The Scribble Studio

single-site surgery? Just think...one tiny incision means virtually no scar and a faster recovery. Currently used for gall bladder removal, single-site will soon be available for other types of surgery, like hysterectomy. And, the South Carolina Institute for Robotic Surgery has more experience with single-site than anyone in the Lowcountry. Trident Health and the South Carolina Institute for Robotic Surgery...Count on Experience.

Single in Charleston?

Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hays of selectivewomen.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect and form REAL relationships.

That’s why so many singles contact selectivewomen.com. Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one of the area’s oldest and largest introduction services, from Savannah and Hilton Head to Charleston, Jacksonville and beyond.

Just make it through this week. If I can just make it through this 8AM meeting. Latte through this endless email chain. Lunch. It’s almost lunch. Get past this conference call. Salad. Late for a meeting. Where’s my phone? Running out the door I’ll never make it in time. Run home to make— wait. There’s nothing for dinner. Who needs dinner. Feet up. Shoes kicked off. Arms in the air. FINISH LINE.

Brent Pace is a Champion for Cystic Fibrosis

When the 39-year-old engineer moved to Charleston in 2003 to work for BP, he wanted to make friends, so he threw himself a birthday party that has turned into an annual tradition—and into a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Brent was diagnosed with CF at age three, the same year his brother was born (and was also diagnosed with CF).“It was a huge blow to my parents,” says Brent.“In 1978, a CF diagnosis was terrifying.” His fundraiser has helped fund research through the CF Foundation. “I’m doing so well because of therapies and medications the CF Foundation’s research has been able to provide. As I get older, I’m staying right at the average age for a compliant CF patient and my prognosis is good.” Brent, who is also a musician and singer (his band is called “Brent Pace for Mayor”), is now on the Board of Directors for the South Carolina CF Foundation chapter and part of its “Great Strides” campaign. “I do these fundraisers for the kids who are sicker than I am…and their parents,” he says. “The foundation is so close to finding a cure.”This year’s fundraiser in April raised over $20,000—a figure that is matched annually by Brent’s employer, BP. See upcoming events, including next month’s fishing tournament, at CFF.org/Chapters/SC. 44  septemberw2014 skirt!magazine

Q: The oldest continuously operating shoe company in the United States that is still making boots in the U.S. today? A: The Frye Company, established Shoes on King, 335 King St., Charleston

The classic Cavalry boot was first crafted by Frye in the late 1930s as a riding boot and remains popular today, on horseback or not. The new version has rubberized soles and come in many shades, perfect for hoofing it around town.

in 1863 during America’s Civil War (both Union and Confederate soldiers wore Frye boots), still Frye's Harness boots are rooted in tradition and draw influence from the classic engineer-style work boot. We love their motorcycle chic look with skirts and dresses; the more you wear them, the better they look.

produces some styles right here in the United States. There are many imitators, but The Frye Company is the real thing. Somewhere between cowgirl and combat, the Harness and Campus styles are two of several that are still made in the USA today.

I'm a boots girl. I always wear boots. They only look better when they get dirty. Sky Ferreira

Hillary Evans, CHt | Winning the Battle of Bad Habits

When you think of hypnotherapy, things like quitting smoking and weight loss come to mind...or even “performance” hypnosis that magicians demonstrate on audience members. Which isn’t actually hypnotherapy, says Hillary Evans. And she’d know the difference. A certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (CHt), Hillary works with clients on everything from overcoming bad habits to reducing stress to changing negative thought patterns to positive ones. “Hypnotherapy is really about life improvement,” says Hillary. “Anything that affects our thoughts, beliefs and emotions can be stressors and hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for change.” Always interested in human behavior, Hillary spent nearly 20 years in NYC working in marketing and digital media before moving to Charleston. She attended The Florida Institute of Hypnotherapy and discovered her true passion in helping people overcome roadblocks in their lives. “A lot of my work involves reframing perception and letting go of old patterns,” says Hillary. She opened her office on East Bay Street earlier this year and has built a busy practice. Read more about Hillary and her practice at TrueHypnosis. com.

Dragon Boat Charleston, Breast Cancer Survivor Team | Winning at Survival

Dragon Boat Charleston, a local nonprofit promoting the mental and physical health of cancer survivors through the sport of dragon boating, is sending its Breast Cancer Survivor (BCS) Team to Sarasota for the International Breast Cancer Survivor Championship next month, where there will be 111 teams from all over the world participating. Alice Turner is one of the 26 paddlers from Charleston. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, Alice discovered Dragon Boat Charleston while participating in a research program at The Citadel. “I was in recovery and needed to get fit,” says Alice. “In the beginning I could barely make it through a practice, but a fellow team member told me to ‘just get in the boat...if you can’t paddle, we’ll do it for you.’ It was a metaphor for these women, all of whom were either survivors or actively battling cancer.” She has her medal from the Tampa International Competition framed in her bedroom, where she sees it every day. “It’s a symbol that we don’t have to do this alone.” Read more about the organization and how to support the team members at DragonBoatCharleston.org.
