SEPTEMBER Charleston, SC

September is all about starting over and shifting gears, changing seasons and making a sea change. Do something for the first time. Make a zine about

anything. Lose your Vespa virginity. Create your own University of One and

major in Wild Ideas. Think sideways instead of straight and narrow. Make the music instead of the musician. Be the power, not the woman behind the power. Lead if you usually follow; surrender if you always resist. Choose Door # Unknown.

Become a beginner at something you think you’ve mastered. Open your mind and give meditation a chance. Let go of anything that doesn’t beautify, edify or sanctify your life. Read out of your depth. Start something impossible or outrageous or out of reach and take a baby step. And then another. Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Jackie Besteman

Peter and Lea do.

Crisscrossing the globe and country, Peter and Lea’s particular paths were destined to cross at some point. Hailing from Luxembourg, Lea moved stateside in ’89, went to Southwest Acupuncture College, Peter Schmitt, CEO Instinctive Tennis Academy 161 Seven Farms Dr. Daniel Island, SC 843.849.5304 peter.schmitt@ familycirclecup.com Lea Krier, D.O.M., L.AC. Natural Health Center Seaside Farms Mount Pleasant, SC 843.224.9823 nhcmtp.com

and then came to Charleston in ’96. Peter unknowingly followed her south in the next decade when he arrived fresh from a 25-year career on radio and TV. But fate had the final hand when Peter’s father ended up being a patient of Lea’s; “surely destiny” says Peter. Between successful careers—Lea is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Peter is CEO and co-owner of the Instinctive Tennis Academy at Family Circle Tennis Center—the two decided to find an abode in Mount Pleasant and recently refinanced. Good fortune led them to saving a fortune when they asked for friends’ advice on finance. “Several people recommended Lucey Mortgage. Our experience was fantastic. We were ready to refinance before a trip to Europe and they expedited the whole process with professionalism and expertise. They were great.”

“I had the weekend hysterectomy.” With three active children, Bridgette couldn’t even consider the down time required after a traditional hysterectomy. The Feel Good Issue I wish I could say I have the secret of serenity, but for me, feeling good often comes down to the little everyday pleasures of daily life. The things I depend on to bring me up when I’m down, one day at a time. Here’s my happiness list right now: • “Parachute Heart” by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. • The “Voting with My Vagina” t-shirt that a friend gave me. • Tiffany & Co.’s blue leather zip wallet that also holds a cell phone. Hint, hint if my kids are reading this. • Hendrick’s Gin & Tonics with one of my BFs after Sunday yoga class. • Avocados—my guilty pleasure. Yes, I know it’s good fat, but it’s still FAT. • The late-afternoon pop-up thunderstorms we’ve had all summer. I love the sturm und drang.

issue, there’s plenty of reason to kick up your heels and kick off your campaign for wellness. Although we’re fond of om-ing, and ahh-ing, I hereby give you permission to pander and pamper your month away, because often my own feel-good fallbacks are little bursts of bad behavior. Picnicking on the bed with takeout pizza and a bottle of wine? Check. Coming up with unnecessary errands that just happen to be near a drive-thru latte window? Absolutely. Reading trashy British gossip pages ten at a time? Sure thing. But unlike me, our brave women of the month have tales to tell that are made of blood, sweat and signs. By sharing stories, going the extra mile, and even picking fights (or at least pretending to), Jana, Angie and Robin are our get-up-and-move muses. Welcome your wellness this September: Whether it’s in a tae-kwon-do class or at a pizza picnic—I’m not one to judge.

As an intervention teacher at Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School in Charleston, Carole knows a thing or two about inspiring courage in her students. She once had a fifth grade student who doubted that he would ever go to college. Carole encouraged him daily. 15 years later after graduating college, he traveled all the way from New York to Charleston just to tell Carole “thank you for believing in me.” Her motto is that if you never give up and follow your heart, you can accomplish your dreams. We couldn’t agree more.

Strings and Splinters

When I was a little girl with a pudgy belly tucked in a black leotard, I practiced clumsy pliés and dizzy pirouettes at Lilo’s ballet studio on Ray Street in downtown High Point, North Carolina, just around the corner from the World’s Largest Chest of Drawers. Lilo (pronounced Lee-low) had the remnants of a foreign accent, French I suppose, that gave her an artistic authority, and I loved her small studio with its glidey linoleum floor, its magical wall of mirrors and sturdy wooden barre. I loved thinking that I was graceful and lithe, twirling around to “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head.” To me, passing by the 20-foot-tall greenish façade of three drawers and round knobs didn’t signal that I lived in the Furniture Capitol of the World, it just meant that I was almost at ballet. I had no idea that anything happened inside that odd old chest of a building, or that it was even really a building—it had no windows on its threedrawer front after all. I didn’t know that it had been a proud landmark since the 1920s when it was built by the furniture titans of the High Point Chamber of Commerce to serve as the local “bureau of information.” Having an oversized chest of drawers in the middle of town seemed silly to me, even then, but the next town over, Thomasville, had The World’s Largest Chair by its railroad tracks, like a prop for Lily Tomlin as Edith Ann, so I figured furniture on steroids just came with the Piedmont territory. The landscape of childhood is full of quirky mysteries and things that don’t make sense, things you have no choice but to take at face value. Big dresser, big chair; no big deal. A landmark becomes just that, a landmark, a sign post, pointing the way to ballet. Yet when I drove through High Point last year on one of many trips home to care for my mother, I drove by the Chest of Drawers (“renovated” 15 years ago), and then by the old storefront where my ballerina fantasies once tippy-toed and twirled about, and felt a crushing sadness. The big chest of drawers was not so big through adult eyes, and seemed hokier than ever to me—actually more pitiful and tragic—knowing now, as I did not know as a ballet-bound little girl, that a formerly booming furniture industry has all but died. That the jobs and livelihoods of extended family members and long-time family friends have withered with it. That a town once robust and rich with textile profits and the fancy inlay and polish of finely-crafted North Carolina furniture is now clinging to nostalgia and grasping at pride that a Henredon chest of drawers will never, ever be matched by Ikea’s particle board. Not that it saved anyone from bankruptcy. I was doing my own grasping and clinging on these return trips to my hometown, where my mother was slowly losing strength to degenerative Lou Gehrig’s disease. Each visit would reveal more physical atrophy, a gradual and sneaky theft of bodily function—first it was her vocal chords on strike, then a tongue that quit moving, then her ability to swallow swallowed and gone. I saw her disease mirrored in the shifting, sometimes decaying landscape around me; many of the places I knew and loved as a child I no longer recognized. They’d changed ownership, been torn down, or become derelict. The ancient Roll-a-Rink and Putt-Putt on North Main Street hadn’t changed a bit, nor had Kepley’s Barbeque, thank heavens—but where my grandfather’s childhood house once stood there was now a parking lot. Hispanic grocery stores and pawn shops lined secondary streets. But over the course of that year and a half, I learned that what was most steady and true of my hometown was fiercer and truer than ever. My mother’s friends, our family friends—the families I grew up with, vacationed with, babysat for, went to church with—were ever-present during her illness, picking up huge amounts of slack when my sisters and I had gone back to our own families. I saw a sisterhood of women’s camaraderie at its finest—an exquisitely versatile and comfortable fabric of friendship tightly woven over four-plus decades of living in one small town. Gayle, Caroline, Lane, Janie, Lynn, Ginger, Hope, Suejette, Jerry, Kathleen, Patsy, and many more rallied around my mom. I was humbled by the strength, loyalty and much-needed humor of these women, wives and mothers who came of age in the nicotine-numbed Mad Men-era of Salem Lights, Garden Club and well-coifed hair. They were there for my mother. They were there for my sisters and me. The textile and furniture businesses that had sustained their families may have shipped out overseas, but they stayed to pick up the strings and splinters and make sure the chest of drawers of High Point would not be empty, but filled with the town’s finest product—the sturdy and generous character of its people. I used to think there was not much to do in a small and distressed town like High Point, but I learned otherwise. I learned that where a lifetime of friendship and sense of belonging is deeply rooted, the act of caring becomes industry enough. MY CHARLESTON SEPTEMBER

.

September. The dog days of summer are upon us and although September doesn’t usually constitute “fall” in Charleston, cooler breezes and pleasant mornings subtly suggest that fall is approaching. While I’m known to rush into any new season with open arms, I try to appreciate the end of summer; the last batches of perfect peaches, early-morning ocean swims, and jean shorts as acceptable attire. But at the end of the day, every season in Charleston is pretty great—and with each new season come different ways to appreciate and experience its beauty.

My friend Melissa, celebrating a birthday with personified balloons.

Stems creates the most stunning floral arrangements I have ever seen.

Keeping it classic with mini glass bottles of Coke.

Sangria made with cava is super refreshing for an end-ofsummer drink.

One of my favorite things about Charleston is the endlessly inspiring group of creative people. Quaint as it is, I’m constantly meeting wonderful new people.

A New Neighborhood.

this month I love

I recently moved south on the peninsula, one mile from where I use to live, so I’m enjoying new views of colorful houses, tucked-away gardens, and glassy water. Second Sunday is now a must-visit, as walking on King Street without the cars is such a treat. We’re happy to be near so many great restaurants (especially during Charleston Restaurant Week, starting September 5th) and of course love the quick jaunt down to the waterfront.

1. Sunday morning blueberry pancakes. 2. Mini succulents to decorate shelves. 3. Venturing to North Charleston for EVO pizza and Sweeteeth chocolate.

If you hit Second Sunday early enough, it’s not too crowded and you have King Street all to yourself.

4. French press and NPR at Fast and French in the mornings. 5. Lambrusco (chilled sparkling red wine) and Scrabble. 6. Floral crowns from Stems. 7. The man who plays the accordion on Second Sundays. 8. Iced green tea from Black Tap Coffee. 9. Back to school shopping, even for those not in school. 10. Heirloom tomato and burrata salads. “Here in Charleston, the end of summer can be one of the most pleasant times— all the perks of the warmer months (raspberries, evening bike rides, beach days and flowy dresses) while acknowledging that crispness in the morning air that suggests fall is upon us.”

Battery Park is always a charming place for an evening picnic.

I’m taking full advantage of the end of summer fruit at the farmers market.

The Unitarian Graveyard Garden off King St. is a peaceful place to take a break.

He’s So Original

Captain Legare Smith keeps an even keel. Between captaining a sportfishing boat and co-owning Gaea Yoga, Legare’s a study in balance. Smitten with the motion of the ocean from a young age, he’s been boat-bound most of his life. “A fishing day out on the Gulf Stream is a full 16 hours. But when I’m not fishing I maintain all the systems and keep the boat in tip-top shape. My last mate said, ‘Take a Ferrari. Build it out of wood. Put it in the salt water and keep it perfect.’ That’s what we do.” On shore, his compass points to the yoga mat. “My wife introduced me to yoga ten years ago when I was rehabbing from a surgery. Yoga has become a part of my life and now I most enjoy trying to create a sense of calm. That said, I’ve been known to meditate on a blue marlin or two.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “I like it when the breeze blows.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “Hands down, best part is the front page column of inspiration. I especially liked August’s, urging us to soak up the last days of summer. Reminded me to go swimming after dark.” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach 42  septemberw2012

What is the best compliment a customer ever paid you?

“I don’t know what I would do

without you!”

How do you unwind after a long day on the farm? I love to read seed catalogs.

What’s your motto? At the end of the day, be happy with your efforts.

Most popular lunch sandwich: Veggie Foccacia! Everyone knows how delicious farm fresh veggies are.

What time does your alarm clock go off? 5am.

Beautiful and bountiful takehome side item: The beet salad always dresses up a table.

What would be a good weekly order? Eggs, milk, butter, CSA “anytime” bag, cottage cheese, a whole farm-fresh chicken, ground beef, Rio Bertolini’s Pasta, and a Farm-Fresh Traditional Meatloaf. This will allow you to prepare multiple meals with all local, organic and farm fresh ingredients, just pair up your proteins with your farm-fresh veggies! Plus you have that delicious meatloaf on hand for when you don’t have time to cook!

Shoes I wear at the farm: Yellow mukluks. What might a veggie bag from the farm have in it this fall? Our first bag of the season will be the week of Sept. 17—still summer in SC. It will have squash, eggplant, beans, cukes, okra, arugula, radish, basil, and peppers. As the weather cools a bit, it will look like broccoli, cabbage, lacinato kale, carrots, snow peas, butter lettuce, radishes, turnips. What is your favorite Dreaming Cow Artisan Yogurt flavor? The Maple Ginger Yogurt is so satisfying and soothing. The ginger is such a therapeutic food, and the maple syrup is nature’s perfect sweetener. It’s divine. What kinds of cheese can I get delivered?

Daily changing menu item: The burger always has something new. I like it with pimento cheese!

Most sinful breakfast item? Don’t tell anyone, but it’s probably the quiche! You know—butta!

What item will give us a taste of fall? Butternut Squash Lasagna and of course, our daily soups.

Your favorite lunch dish to prepare: A delicious bowl of soup—it’s always fresh.

What new side veggies will you add in the fall? Skillet Apples.

Most popular take-home item? Traditional Farm Fresh Meatloaf.

How do you manage to run a farm, a café and market, and an online market with a delivery service? I get asked this a lot, but it is definitely by working with a team! The individuals that work to make this idea of Our Local Foods a reality are amazing, visionary, hard-working and dedicated individuals and I am proud of the efforts of each of them. Our intern program at the farm is helping to grow the farm, but also to grow the next generation of farmers. It’s an awesome program and opportunity! When is the last order taken for this week’s delivery? Monday at midnight!

All of our cheeses are small batch produced—no additives or stabilizers. One little girl who comes into our shop with her mom calls it “real cheese.” We carry blue cheese, havarti with horseradish and chive, asiago, parmesan, three-year cheddar, etc. What’s a real treat to add to a delivery package? The chocolate chip cookies.

Five restaurants on your bucket list:

A r e Yo u r L a d y P a r t s Con cealed Weap on s ? Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) likened the requirement that private insurance plans provide contraception coverage to two of the most devastating attacks on American soil. “I know in your mind, you can think of the times America was attacked,”he said at a press conference on Capitol Hill.“One is December 7, that’s Pearl Harbor Day. The other is September 11, and that’s the day the terrorists attacked. I want you to remember August 1, 2012, the attack on our religious freedom. That is a day that will live in infamy, along with those other dates.” August 1 was the first day private insurers had to include birth control coverage in their plans without charging a co-pay, per requirements in the Affordable Care Act. The change will affect most women on private health plans.

Revival Meeting

Happenings Learn. Thrive. Succeed.

September

My favorite dinner date is my friend Jay, for all kinds of reasons. He’s good-looking, witty and sensitive, and his obsessions are different enough from mine that they’re actually endearing. He’s kind, and extremely picky about his women. He also happens to be married to my friend Liz, which pretty much takes the heat off. The icing on the cake, often literally if he baked that day, is that he’s a former restaurant chef. When he says, “Dinner out?”, he means a multi-course, healthy, home-cooked meal on his back patio, with many of the ingredients picked straight from the garden just minutes ago. Jay lives in Danville, a town set in a narrow part of the San Ramon Valley against the dramatic double-pyramid backdrop of California’s Mt. Diablo. First populated by Native Americans, then put to use as grazing land, the area finally transformed itself from a farming community to a residential suburb just after World War II. Now it boasts one of the priciest zip codes in the nation. But Jay’s house (as I think of it, since Liz is often out when I drop by), is quite modest by Danville standards. I also can’t quite manage to shed the notion that he’s single-handedly trying to turn his town back into farmland. On a street of beautifully manicured lawns with tasteful wrought-iron or redwood fencing and flower-lined cement walkways, Jay’s front yard stands out. The first thing you notice are the giant stalks of corn. Not a cornfield, exactly, but you could definitely lose a child or a dog in there. Venture a little deeper into the yard, and even before the sweet fragrance of ripe tomatoes, onions and herbs assaults the nose, there are enormous squash, carrots curling up from leafy nests, melons swelling into ripe bounty in the next row. Cucumbers and eggplants and peas burst free in voluptuous glory in a semicircle beyond that. The house seems almost like an afterthought. I’m not a gardener. It’s a miracle when one of my houseplants survives my overwatering and underfeeding. To walk through this cool green oasis, then, is a visit to a foreign country in which Jay speaks the language and I do not. He’s fluent in the dialect of fertilizing, weeding, pruning, irrigating. He’s patient and listens to the garden’s murmurings. “Look,” he says. “That’s a different kind of cucumber I’m trying out. Pick a couple and we’ll put them in the salad tonight.” He makes mango salsa to put on the salmon he’s grilling for us. We eat it with the juiciest tomatoes I’ve ever tasted, and corn on the cob that is so sweet we don’t bother with butter. I don’t tell him I’ve spent the day with vampire people, that I felt so used up by evening that I didn’t even want to drive over, just longed to curl up on my bed and bury my tired mind in a book. I feel restored here, as if the arid desert I’ve been stumbling through has vanished altogether. The garden is a friend, and mirrors what I like best about Jay himself—it’s orderly, eccentric, generous. We talk about movies, music, the writing he doesn’t have time for and the ups and downs of his job. Dessert turns out to be his pecan shortbread and some strawberries, with a little aged Gouda. He won’t let me clear the table or wash anything, so I walk back out to the cornstalks, just to breathe the magic fragrance again and fortify myself against the vampire people I will have to talk to the next morning. Liz pulls up just as I’ve closed my eyes and am thanking a tomato plant. “Hey, you look like someone I know,” she says, and hugs me quickly, smelling slightly rank from the gym. “What are you doing out here in the dark by your lonesome?” “Planning a heist,” I say. “I’ve got my eye on those melons and strawbs.” “Jay will give you a takeout bag,” Liz says, hand on my shoulder. “You have no idea how happy we are to get rid of some of this. C’mon, let’s go in before I wilt. I just realized how much I hate the gym. You should come with me next time, except I’m never ever going back. ” Jay is hunched over a seed catalogue at the kitchen table when we go inside, with a kettle boiling for tea. I stay just long enough for them to load me up with a tin of homemade granola and a huge paper bag of ripe veggies. “You can have your husband back now,” I tell her. “Thanks for the great loaner.” I start to feel bad that I didn’t bring anything, didn’t cook anything, didn’t clean up. Then I notice the way they’re smiling at me, and it just doesn’t matter. I am being tended to, another plant in need of water, food and light. Driving back through Danville, I gaze at all the ordinary corn-free yards, though some are quite ornately appointed, with huge lawn ornaments or doghouses with little windows and their own house number. Beneath this luxury, though, I can sense the vibrant hum of earth—rich, dark and hungry, ready to give back a hundred times over. Body Talk

Robin Lee Maggy | Stunt Star If it scares Robin, it’s on her to-do list. “If there is something I’m afraid of, I plan to conquer it. For example, skydiving. I’m not really thrilled with the idea of jumping out of a plane, so therefore I have to do it. That’s just the way I look at life: If it doesn’t kill me it makes me stronger.” For Robin, conquering those challenges adds to her résumé, which, aside from her day job running Bark Avenue, is chock-full of stunts for TV and movies (Army Wives, Homeland, Eastbound & Down, What to Expect When You’re Expecting). That’s even her body in the creepy promos for A&E’s Labor Day miniseries, Coma. Keeping fit has always been a priority for Robin, but that persistence is rewarded. “When it comes to an extremely difficult stunt there is no room for error. There are life and death consequences and an inch in the wrong direction can make all the difference.” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach

Introducing KöR Whitening Deep Bleaching is the newest, most revolutionary and effective teeth whitening system ever developed. Unlike typical teeth whitening procedures:

KöR Whitening is so effective; it is the only recognized system in the world that will even whiten tetracycline (dark) stained teeth, previously thought to be impossible.

With easy periodic at-home maintenance your teeth will stay white permanently, even while you continue to drink red wine, tea, coffee, etc.

I am a beautiful, confident woman... During the whitening process nearly all patients experience only low to typically no teeth sensitivity.

This procedure is comfortable and 100% safe for your teeth and gums. The result is a radiantly white, natural appearing smile that you will LOVE! It is perfect for everyone, from 14 to 90!

But I felt I needed some changes on the outside to reflect what I felt on the inside. I've worked hard dieting and being active but I still needed a little help with achieving the look I desired. So I made the call to Palmetto Plastic Surgery. Dr. Young is qualified to perform cosmetic and reconstructive surgery on all areas of the body. And with his help I found a renewed sense of happiness.

Jana Brady | Seeing Signs From birthing rooms to funerals, blind dates for the deaf and even translating Oprah herself, Jana has a hand (or two) in getting the message across. Creating a college degree by combining interests—a major in science and minor in American Sign Language and dance— appeased her varying talents, but had a downside. “My parents thought I had lost my mind; what would I do with this degree? I then went on to become a medical specialty interpreter and a yoga instructor, so it all came together.” Jana recently created her own commercial cleaning service with all deaf and hard of hearing employees, but also has her own ASL agency, interpreting anything from the Vagina Monologues to graduations and even court cases. “What most people don’t realize is that ASL involves not only the hands but also the upper body, shoulders, and face movements especially the eyes and the mouth. I love that it’s such an expressive language.” Photo by Alice Keeney

Angie Marion | Woman on the Run When a friend suggested to Angie that they join Black Girls Run together, she didn’t buy it. “I just stared at her and told her the day I would run is the day they would be doing chest compressions on me!” Late last year, she finally signed up. “I was coming up with every excuse in the book. I had to step back and ask myself why I didn’t want to run and I couldn’t come up with anything. I told myself to stop and just get out there and move forward. Heck, if I can beat breast cancer and live through the death of my son, I surely can give this running thing a try.” Today Angie actually looks forward to running and has five races under her ever-shrinking belt. “The more I see my fellow BGR family get out there and run or work out, it inspires me to do it too.” Photo by Alice Keeney

If Nina can shed her clothes, I can too.

Su Clauson-Wicker

T

he scene is the stuff of my nightmares. I stride into a room full of strangers, smile at the folks in close range, smooth back my hair, and then it hits me—I’m buck naked. So are the strangers. I’m not sure if this makes things better or worse. I try not to stare, but I’m curious about all these bodies in front of me. Where to look? I fight an urge to bolt. Everything socialized into me since age four—when I was spanked for running naked at a Farm Bureau picnic—screams this is wrong, wrong, wrong. Being naked in public, especially after a major lumpectomy, is over-the-top bad form, and yet there is also something tremendously liberating ignoring that hectoring inner voice. This imperfect, aging body is me at my most basic—not the padded bathing suit or the black dress designed to make me look 10 pounds slimmer. I am visiting White Tail Park, a nudist resort located at the end of a dirt road an hour east of Norfolk, Virginia. I’m here, on a dare, to explore social nudity. I want to see if baring it all in front of other mature people helps me, a sagging, parts-missing 50-plus woman, to better accept my body. A former neighbor, the dare-pitcher, insists it will. An attractive 40ish woman of 200 pounds, Nina met her current husband at a nude event and disappeared into the California sunset. “We’ve been taught to be ashamed of our naked bodies, to feel that everyone has perfect bodies but ours aren’t right,” Nina said. “Being nude around other people helped me appreciate the naturalness of my own body.” If Nina can shed her clothes, I can too. I scout out the route to White Tail Park, but panic and turn away at the gate on my first attempt. As I drive around, attempting to calm my pounding heart, I think of the under-30 fellow at my gym who told me I should stop wearing shorts and hide my ugly broken veins. What would he say about the rest of me? Armed with just enough anger to feel rebellious, I head back to White Tail and jab the button for the entrance buzzer. The two-story electronic gate swings open for my first glimpse of the unclothed utopia. I expect Woodstock, but find the ranch houses, tidy sidewalks, and brick community buildings of Middle America. No nudists in sight.

The Naked Truth

The park office manager, dressed only in sandals, scans my driver’s license to determine whether I am a sex offender and reads me White Tail’s rules. I can’t wear clothes, take pictures, or engage in “lewd, lascivious behavior.” “Nudity isn’t about sexuality,” she says. “Nobody is going to stare at you or make a pass. We’re like family here.” Then I have to take off my clothes, right there in the park office under its unblinking fluorescents. It’s scary, unreal. I try not to imagine how I look. Will I see pity on her face? Kim doesn’t even look up from her filing as she bids me a “happy nude day.” I saunter outside, trying to appear nonchalant, as if I walk along the street in the buff every day. When a man emerges from the activity center, I snap into fig-leaf pose with my hand over the scar on my left breast. He smiles politely and heads off in the other direction without a second glance. White Tail’s population swells to 600 or more on weekends, when most of the dances, “Nude Year’s Eve” festivities, and other activities take place. The park also posts a spring art show of (what else?) nudes and a public, clothing-optional 5k race. The park’s regular offerings include darts, horseshoes, dance lessons, karaoke, computer club, swimming, water volleyball, nude church and nude Bible study. “We’re not swingers,” the owner and founder says. “We’re not all old hippies either. We’re just family people who like the freedom to go without clothes.” The average age here appears to be close to 50. People saunter around the crowded pool and recreation room, not one bit self-conscious about midriff bulge, cellulite, heart-surgery scars, sagging breasts, or missing breasts. My first impression is that these people would look a lot better with clothes. I feel bad for being so judgmental, especially when I see my own diminished form reflected in the recreation center windows. “We all check each other out. It’s normal to be curious,” says Lou Ann, the 60ish nudist on my right. “But once you see what’s there, you move on and focus on the person.” People at White Tail seem especially open, friendly, and unpretentious. I meet roofers and race car drivers, nurses, a lawyer, and computer geeks—a mixed bag of occupations and income levels. Not that I would know any of this from looking at them. All social status drops off with the “textiles,” their word for clothes. Because social nudity is an edgy activity, having the guts to step outside boundaries is a prerequisite here, but it may be the only one. “I know I feel more relaxed and present here. I really listen to people. Maybe it’s because their clothes aren’t distracting me,” says Carol, who is a caseworker in her textile life. “I’ll be looking at a woman’s tattoo and not even think about it being on her butt—that’s how long I’ve been here,” says Frank, whom I meet in the hot tub. I credit him with looking at my face from the moment we meet and notice he treats the voluptuous, 20-something bride and her older husband the same way. Is White Tail Park a sort of a Garden of Eden where nudism has an innocence that it doesn’t outside the gates? “Nudism is not sexy,” says Carol, a gently rounded strawberry blonde who might well be called sexy. “What’s sexy are thongs and bikinis, the types of things that flirt with your imagination. That doesn’t mean nudists leave their sensual feelings at the door, but this isn’t about sex.” Gradually over the day, these bodies—and my own—begin to look natural. The shock, the need to stare, and the impulse to duck into a corner and giggle all wear off. I notice that fleshiness is a good thing. The rounder, more padded people—women especially—seem the most attractive, the embodiment of femininity. The lean look I’ve unsuccessfully pursued all my life seems rather stick-like and uninteresting without clothes. I’m moving forward in accepting my body. Still, I feel guilty about noticing differences and making comparisons. When will this body consciousness ever end? I honestly have no idea. But I do know I enjoy the experience on a sensual level. Even air feels different as it riffles over tiny hairs on my stomach. The sun and wind create a pleasant an air bath. Water feels even better. Its caress has me feeling like a two-year-old romping in the pond. I don’t know whether I’ll ever go back to White Tail Park for “a nakation,” as they call it. It may be something I do just once. But I do feel more alive, a happier animal. My belly fat, the dimples on my thighs, the cobweb of red veins spreading above my knee, even my surgical scar now seem natural. They bond me to a vast community of aging people, some of them honest, adventurous, and unruly. The supportive camp of baby boomers at White Tail provides a reality check. My body is not disgusting, ugly, or even sexy— it’s just a body, after all.

FEEL GOOD A b o u t Y o u r M e s s age Tees for Change believes in the power of positive intention.

While wearing a t-shirt with an inspiring message on it, not only do we remind ourselves

to incorporate more of the phrase into our own lives, but we also encourage others we encounter throughout the day to do the same. The blend of bamboo and organic cotton in Tees for Change creates a luxuriously soft shirt, and several of their styles are made in the USA. For every tee they sell, the company plants a tree by making a contribution to Trees for the Future.

Sunday night dinners weren’t a return to the past, but a step forward into the future.

W

Lisa Evans

hen I moved from home to attend university, I missed many things about my parents’ tiny bungalow. The backyard sanctuary my father created, the kitchen that always smelled of fresh-brewed coffee, the large, plush living room couch that we could all comfortably sprawl out on, and the family cat that provided hours of entertainment. I expected to miss these things as I moved into a small, backyard-less one bedroom apartment that didn’t allow pets, but I was surprised to find what I missed the most were those five o’clock family dinners. The food was okay, but my mother wasn’t a great cook and most of the meals came from a pre-frozen box. Frozen fish, frozen Cajun chicken and even frozen bacon-stuffed potatoes were regular items on the family dinner menu. We joked that we were so lucky to have a mom who could get dinner on the table in half an hour or less. Fortunately for her, the food wasn’t the highlight of the meal. I looked forward to those dinners where we shared stories about our days, opinions about current events and discussed our future plans. My sister and I proudly produced our report cards and graded homework assignments, receiving praise from our parents for a job well done and ice cream for dessert when we really did a stellar job. We laughed at the cat’s attempt to steal chicken from our plates and my sister and I played rock-paper-scissors to decide who would get the dreaded dish-washing job. Six years removed from the family dinner table, I was recently divorced and living in yet another backyard-less one bedroom apartment in the downtown core. My father’s proposal to return to tradition and host the Sunday night dinner couldn’t have come at a better time. As I drove up my childhood street, I was reminded of a family dinner that didn’t take place at our house, but in Bayfield, a small town on the shores of Lake Huron. On this unforgettable evening, the four of us huddled around the small round checker-clothed table, staring out at the dark sky that threatened us from behind the sheer curtains that lined the motel restaurant where we had stayed for the past five summers. Rain pounded the rooftop and howling winds prevented us from hearing the normal chatter in the kitchen behind us. Trees were bent at an awkward angle and scraped the glass windows. We stayed in the restaurant a little longer than usual and watched as the sky darkened and the wind raised its voice.

The next morning, we realized we had been witnesses to a devastating tornado that had ripped through the town overnight, leaving behind a mess of uprooted trees and overturned cars. Neighbors walked the streets looking for their lost garbage cans and mailboxes. Camera crews from local TV stations rolled through town to document the calamity Mother Nature had wrought upon unsuspecting townsfolk. As I drove down my parents’ street, remembering this dinner, I reflected on my life. At this point, it closely resembled Bayfield after that devastating tornado. I was 27, divorced, working in a dead-end job with barely enough money to pay my rent and unsure what my future held. Taking a deep breath, I walked up the driveway to my childhood home for the first of many promised Sunday night dinners. Shame masked my growling stomach as my shaky hand reached for the doorknob, opening a side door that I can’t remember ever having been locked. My parents had been cautious about my leap into marriage while I, as usual, had confidently boasted “I know what I’m doing.” I was wrong, and as I walked up the four stairs that led into the kitchen, I worried I would be perceived a failure—back at the dining table, needing the type of good old-fashioned scolding my father was so good at and was known to bequeath upon his daughters. I’d clearly made a mess of things and deserved the tongue-lashing. Surprisingly, this wasn’t the case at all. By now, Mom had learned to cook and treated her girls to a gourmet meal, the ingredients to which I struggled to pronounce. As she placed a steaming dish of vegetable lasagna on the table that she had prepared from scratch instead of a box, we engaged in our usual banter. “We have a new neighbor,” announced my dad. “I signed up to run a 10k,” said my sister. “The cat needs his nails clipped. Can you do that after dinner?” asked my mom. We laughed about my mom’s new boss, whose large grey beard hung at least three inches from his chin, giving him the nickname “Santa Claus,” although his management style turned out to more closely resemble The Grinch, and we talked about planning a family trip to Niagara Falls. Sunday night dinners weren’t a return to the past, but a step forward into the future. Mom filled our Tupperware containers with leftovers and asked what we wanted on the menu for next week. We drooled over her recipe books, selecting spinach and ricotta stuffed chicken, Cajun potatoes and peach pie. But it wasn’t the delicious food that kept me coming home every Sunday night. Family dinners provided the normalcy to what otherwise seemed like a tornado-wrecked life. For a few hours each week, I was behind the sheer curtains, safe from the destructive storm.

Lisa Evans is a writer from Toronto, Canada, who now lives in Mexico with her boyfriend. While she is no longer able to attend Sunday night dinners at her parents’ house, she credits them for putting her back on the right path in her life. feel Good FEEL G OOD Without a Lifetime Commitment OAs a “forever shelter,” Pet Helpers of Charleston has very limited space

because they keep all their animals until they’re adopted. Consequently, they rely heavily on foster parents to give their animals the proper care and attention they deserve as they wait for adoption. It also creates space to admit another animal in need. A foster program maximizes the

number of animals rescued, and it allows the organization to care for animals that would

otherwise not receive enough attention in a shelter environment, especially kittens and puppies that are not yet old enough to be adopted. And for animals that may need a temporary break from the shelter, foster care provides a comfortable home environment that keeps them healthy and happy.

I used to have a very elaborate inside joke with a few other women in media. It was called The Island, and the narrative went like this: All of the editors we know to be sexual harassers or professional bullies are on a plane together when the plane goes down on a small island. It was funny to picture this scenario, but also sort of a sad coping mechanism. We knew these dudes were too professionally powerful, too entrenched to really be held accountable. The Island became a code for telling each other who was a good guy—which upper-masthead men actually wanted to mentor us, and which ones just wanted the thrill of having a cocktail with an attractive younger woman under the guise of professionalism: “Is he on The Island or not?” ~Ann Friedman, “Is he on The Island?”

September is my birth month, and although

I LOVE celebrating my birthday. (will there be, could there be, a piñata again this year?!), the month itself has always been a little tinged with sadness for me.

Maybe it’s the change of light or just the slight melancholy that comes with the downward turning of the year.

If it had a color, September would be

sepia. If it had an anthem, it would be “Summer’s Gone” by The Beach Boys.

And if it had a uniform, it would be faded Levi’s old enough to be vintage. September is lonely and

lovely

all at the same

time.

I hate grocery shopping and I’m too impatient to be a good cook, so when I run out of food, I sometimes resort to my favorite comfort food for supper: Jif Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter on saltines with a Coke.Yes, I know that is pitiful fare for a grownup, but it makes me happy.

Remember Belinda Carlisle of The Go-Gos? She has a CD of French songs that I’d never heard of till Jeffery at RTW in Charleston (rtwcharleston.com) recommended it. It’s one of the soundtracks that plays in the shop and now in regular rotation on my iTunes playlist.

As much as I hate it, I’m tethered to my iPhone, which often loses a charge before I can get home to plug in. The Mophie Juice Pack serves as both a case and on-the-go battery charger. I’d be lost, or at least incommunicado, without it.

I’m not a good meditator, but I’ve been using the iMeditateWithErich app since my yoga teacher recommended it. For some reason, it really works for me. I can pick the type of meditation I want to do and the duration— hopefully increasing the time as I progress. imeditatewitherich.com
