CHARLESTON, SC

ESCAPE THE ORDINARY

So what's the

big idea, little dreamer?

We know you have one or one thousand. If you're waiting for an engraved invite, it's probably lost in the mail. These big ideas that we have...in coffee shops, in the shower, just before we fall asleep at night...have a tendency to fly away unless we write them down, over and over, until we're ready to act. Do you know how many Oprahs there would be if we all took that leap from little dream to

big idea? We don't know either,

but we'd love to find out. What if one of your Pinterest boards came to life? Would you jump in feet first or run in the other direction? Choose feet first. The worst that could happen is that you learn what works and what doesn't. The best? You love to come to work every day, you finally work for yourself, you made something from nothing, you turn passion into profit, or you start that nonprofit to solve a huge problem in the world. We can't regret what we don't attempt. You have what you need already, that spark, that little dream, that

big idea. We can do it together,

because life is short and nobody puts baby in the corner. Our new motto is

BIG BIG

dreams and

BIG

ideas make

things happen. We'll see you at

the end of the rainbow, dreamers. Be there or be square. Cover Art: Jackie Besteman Cover Art: Whitney Barnard, The Scribble Studio

Sally Jane Pitts is a writer with a passion for creating female driven screenplays, blogging and life lesson essays. She’s also an adventurer and a big kid at heart. You can check out more of Sally’s life lessons at whatsallylearntthisweek.com

MY BIG MOMENT “ I f o u n d a n e w , m o r e c o u r a g e o u s m e .”

This year I experienced growth I could never possibly have imagined. Growth I didn’t even know was even necessary. It led me to realize I was capable of a much BIGGER life, than the one I was living. But that life no longer looks like it once did.

It’s been almost a year now. Life has brought me more challenges, as it does everyone. But I was able to find a way to cope with what I’d been through. I found a new, more courageous me. Of course I don’t always get it right, I try to control things that I can’t, and then I realize I need to let go.

Before I go forward and tell you how this BIG moment shaped me, I’ll have to go back. And yes, sometimes that can be tough. However by bravely reliving stuff we’d rather forget it helps us come to terms with what has been, so we can step into the light. By doing so we become stronger and be more equipped to deal with the darkness, next time it descends.

Control is my go-to but I see this now. I can put the brakes on and stop the car. My past doesn’t control me. Neither does my future. I can only do now. And now that I’ve been through the dark and learned to respect myself, I know I can bring the light back into my life.

I don’t share my story lightly but I share it so that if you’ve been through trauma, you may find comfort in knowing that you must do anything you can to save your life.

In fact, I brought someone into my life that I never thought I would. And he is the definition of amazing. But that is not what’s most important. It’s the fact that I was able to save myself first.

Last year I was violently sexually assaulted. The worst thing was that I was ashamed because it happened when I was drunk. I thought it was somehow my fault. So I tried to block it out, forget it. But I couldn’t. I needed help. Real help.

This is what led me to realize I’m capable of so much more than I thought. I am capable of BIGNESS in my life. This knowledge comes from a place of looking after myself. Giving myself what I need. That is what I had to learn as I was traversing through the murky waters of healing.

I started intensive therapy. I had to go into the deepest, darkest places. My insides were ripped out and laid bare. I became so utterly lost. I drank, I was angry; I had to deal with what had happened. I had to grieve. I had to walk, I had to read, I had to talk to friends, I had to cry and scream. I had to do anything possible to find myself again. But I wasn’t to be found. The girl who was assaulted, that naive girl who thought it was her own fault. She was gone. So who was left? I still don’t really know to be honest. But there was no going back. My eyes were open. It was like everything I knew had been shattered. All my bad relationships came flooding back. Every shitty thing I’d never dealt with was there waiting for me to face it. Face up to why I’d let it happen to me. Ask myself why I didn’t think I deserved respect and love from a man. Did all I think I was worthy of was someone who only wanted to screw me? Yes, my friends that’s what I actually thought. That that was all I had to offer. Sex. I thought that’s all men wanted. I was so incredibly sad when I realized this.Thinking back to that version of myself breaks my heart.

It’s the small steps we take to love ourselves each day, that create a BIG attitude. Whether that’s taking time out to read, meditate, watch a film, exercise, chat to friends or just give ourselves a damn break! All these things contribute to our soul. It’s personal to each of us. When we treat ourselves better, we realize we deserve better and that we are capable of so much more. You may not see small changes but if you continually strive for what you want, stand in your power; one day you’ll see you’ve arrived. Maybe you have already arrived without even knowing it. I continue on my path towards seeing scripts I’ve written up on the silver screen. This is my BIG dream. But I also aspire to inspire women through my writing every day. This is my BIG goal. When you read this I want you to know that you are so much more amazing than you believe. And even though sometimes you don’t feel in control of your own story, you are. Whatever happens to you, you choose what to do about it. We all have a BIG life to live. Now is your time to live it.

No one is flying home from Rio with more medals than the U.S. women. The American squad — both men and women — won the most medals overall, 121, as has often been the case in the Summer Games. But first in London four years ago, and again in Rio, the U.S. women have captured most of those medals. The U.S. women took 61, the men had 55, and there were five in mixed events, including equestrian and mixed-doubles tennis. To sum it up: The women won 27 of the 46 American golds.

Big Heart, Be Smart Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. That’s approximately one woman every minute. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health for this very reason. GoRedForWomen.org has the facts and action you can take to lower your risk.

High Flying Females Over the last five decades, most of the female pilot population growth took place between 1960 and 1980, a time when a feminist message encouraged women to try activities previously perceived as reserved to men. During those two decades, the number of female pilots went from 4,218 to 26,896 and the number of women holding a forhire pilot certificate went from 763 to 4,473. Considering getting your own wings? The Great Trek Canada’s got us beat in the world of car-free cross-country trails—like fivetimes-as-long beat. The Great Trail, also referred to as the Trans Canada Trail, is a 14,864-mile network of paths set to be completely connected by 2017, to coincide with the country’s 150th birthday. The closest we have here? A 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway. Let’s hope Canada inspires the U.S. to up our game!

No Pay Gap? Nope, it’s still there. According to an analysis conducted by the National Women’s Law Group, which is a non-profit advocacy group, the gender pay gap will cost women, on average, about $430,000 over the course of a lifetime. What you can do: Focus on your own paycheck, square your shoulders, take a deep breath, and ask for that raise.

Go Big, Go Vote In 1916 Alice Paul formed the National Woman's Party (NWP), a militant group focused on the passage of a national suffrage amendment. Over 200 NWP supporters, the Silent Sentinels, were arrested in 1917 while picketing the White House, some of whom went on hunger strike and endured forced feeding after being sent to prison. Your takeaway? We’ve only been able to vote since 1920 and, regardless of who you vote for, you honor these women who fought for our right to vote by VOTING.

SPENCER GEORGE

Spencer George is a writer, feminist, and blogger. She is the founder of the #NOTYOURGIRL campaign, which encourages young girls to embrace their true selves, and is a student at Barnard College of Columbia University.

I’ve always believed in one big moment in life: Graduation. I grew up with the notion that going to college would be my grand experience - that I would make my best friends there, take classes that would transform me from a nervous freshman into a confident intellectual, that I would grow comfortable with myself and make the slow conversion into adulthood. I waited my entire life to graduate high school and go off to embark on this great adventure, to head off to a seemingly-mythical metropolis of intellectualism. College, for me, was the final destination, my big moment, a dream I had cultivated from the moment I began high school to the moment I ended.

MOMENTS AND DREAMS ARE ONLY AS

A few weeks ago I packed up my bedroom and headed up to NYC with all the idealism and excitement I could muster. I knew that college would be a major life change, that I would come home for Christmas barely resembling the person I had been when I left in August. From there on out, I truly thought my life would be halved into a beforeand-after, one half of me still stuck in the childhood naivete of high school and the other stepping wildly into the realm of knowledge, ready to venture into greatness and recognition. I was finally going to be surrounded by those with similar passions to mine; I was finally going to be able to do something influential with my life.

WE MAKE THEM.

BIG OR SMALL AS

How exquisite I felt it must be to sit in a lecture hall and listen to students debate philosophy, literature, language. And having now begun classes, I can confirm that it is.There is nothing like it; every day is a new adventure, a new journey in thinking. But I’ve also learned something, and that’s that college is not my big moment. A new school and a new city will not define me; a change in location does not have the power to make me into the person I’ve always wanted to be. Only I have that power, and so my big moment must take place every day, when I decide to wake up and be the best version of myself I can be. Moments and dreams are only as big or small as we make them. So, please, please, go out and make them big.

LIFE’S BIG MOMENTS ARE THE ONES YO U D O N ’ T E X P E C T T O H A P P E N

“ M a m a a l w a y s s a i d l i f e w a s l i k e a b o x o f c h o c o l a t e s . Yo u n e v e r k n o w w h a t y o u ’ r e g o n n a g e t .”

When I first heard it, I agreed with Forrest Gump’s credo in the same-titled movie, and it wasn’t only because of my chocoholic tendencies, or Tom Hanks playing such an unusual but highly likeable character. I have always had this view about life as something more than the utter predictability of its course, namely birth, childhood, formative schooling years, job(s), marriage(s), children, family celebrations, retirement, and eventually death. I might be generalising here, but one could easily say that these were the big, significant moments in everyone’s life, and I didn’t want to agree to disagree. In my view, the big moments in life were the ones that made it uniquely and wonderfully yours: that unexpected first kiss; the one crazy adventure you’d talk for years to come; the love that got away, or the love that made you move mountains. Or, in my case, leave country and relocate to Africa. The big moments were the ones you’d never expect to get, just like the chocolates in the box. My life had been quite the uneventful, usual bit – school, teenage awkwardness and all - until my twenties and my foreign escape (escape does sound better than ‘internship abroad’), where I met and fell in love with my now husband of eight years. Then came the biggest adventure of all: my travel and subsequent move to the African continent, his birthplace. Before meeting my soulmate at the tender age of twenty, I have never done anything daring or out of my comfort zone. Working a full-time job as a journalist, while studying for a business degree, seemed like a walk in the park. Graduating with honours was a piece of cake. Everything appeared to fall into place, in the trajectory of life as I knew it: I had my family, the degree, the job, the potential career path, the past failed relationships and possibly, one day, a future long-term partner in sight. I would eventually meet my other half, but I’ve never given it too much thought. And then there came this sexy traveller with the most infectious smile and the biggest crown of curly hair I’d ever seen. He was kind and wonderful. I was smitten. My life unfolded right before my eyes. Everything could change. Everything was about to change indeed. I left my life behind as soon as I graduated, and got on a plane to South Africa. Looking back, it all happened too fast, but it was the excitement that kept me going. The novelty of exploring other parts of the world was as strong and momentous as the immense love I carried for my future husband. It felt just right. Life was not supposed to be lived in one place. Life was meant to be experienced and relished in as many ways and places one could explore before the grim reaper showed up. It was my time to explore. It was the chance to move away from the past and the obvious and embrace an uncharted path abroad. Who knew what could happen next? But wasn’t that the point of life, not knowing? Travelling and living in Africa has been the most wonderful, humble and eye-opening experience so far in my young existence. There was so much to see, learn, and capture in my heart, mind, and soul that I felt at times like I haven’t even scratched the

38

surface. It never got boring. What seemed like audacious goals for most Europeans and westerners in general, aka the good life – the big money, the big house, the big car, the big exotic holidays - were not necessarily the go-to ways of most Africans. It was a breath of fresh air to see a melting pot of desires, aspirations and artistic expressions, as varied as its colourful people and tribes. I met people from all walks of life, and each time I discovered another universe waiting to happen, or, in Forrest Gump’s words, yet another box of chocolates. I thought that moving to Africa was my life’s big defining moment, and it certainly was when I touched its sacred ground. But the most significant change was truly about to come. I discovered a place where the emotional and the spiritual abound, and where I felt myself shine. In truth, I have truly found myself on this magnificent continent, miles away from the only home I knew. I learned that slowing down and savouring life’s simple moments shouldn’t be an afterthought after a hard day at work. I began viewing work as more than a means to pay bills and shopping sprees. I replaced the climbing the proverbial ladder with an expression of my true identity and passion. I started freelancing and writing at my pace, and to my enjoyment. I read more, and I wrote more. I also developed a newfound passion for the great outdoors. I often went camping with my husband and tried to keep it as basic as possible. There was something magical about making coffee and frying meat over an open fire. Food tasted better than usual. I savoured the wildlife and its simple, yet powerful circle of life. I looked at the amazing night sky in awe and counted the stars. I took the time to listen to nature’s sounds and rhythms. I discovered gardening and grew my herbs and vegetables in the back yard. My cooking sessions improved and diversified. I didn’t just spice up my dishes; it felt like my whole life has been spiced up. I felt alive. Across the globe, people search for something transcendent, bigger, better and bolder than the daily life waiting back home: the adventure of a lifetime; the big moment of change. Africa is one of those magical places where being yourself and connected to others, at home, in nature, or wherever your footsteps bring you, is just enough. This realisation alone is worthy of a celebratory party similar to a rite of passage, a new beginning as a married couple, a newborn child, or another item crossed off the bucket list. Back to Forrest Gump. If life was indeed a box of chocolates, and every chocolate represented a great pivotal moment, the most rewarding chocolates would be the ones you wouldn’t normally expect to find inside. Take the decadent gourmet French trufflestuffed delicacy, the couture gold flakes covered goodies, or the chocolates you wouldn’t dare to taste of the purest bitter 99% dark cocoa kind. But those are the ones I guarantee you’d never forget. Making a big life change might be pretty scary for most. But know what would be even scarier? Regret. So bite and relish that chocolate, today.

BIGGER HOSPITALITY Belmond Charleston Place, one of our city’s hospitality landmarks and its biggest hotel, has completed a $34 million renovation of its 434 guest rooms that started more than two years ago. It was a top-to-bottom overhaul for the nearly 30-year-old property, which was lauded as one of former Mayor Joe Riley’s “biggest accomplishments” because it sparked the revitalization of downtown Charleston’s shopping district.

Realize you don’t have nice paper. Just old utility bills, receipts from Nordstrom Rack, and a notepad from the Pittsburgh Hyatt Regency. Your dreams deserve better. Drive to Office Depot to buy a cute journal.

3

School supplies are on sale! That Kate Spade pencil case is adorable! And so is that retro Swingline stapler. Throw them into your cart. And, you should probably pick up a shredder to get rid of those old receipts.

4

While standing in the checkout line, notice a rack of cute thumb drives shaped like miniature Pantone swatches. 8GB for $3. That’s a deal! Pick one up in rose quartz and another in marsala.

5

Remember that Frontline episode where spies hacked into a nuclear power plant’s computer system with a simple USB drive infected with the STUXNET virus. Return the Pantone swatch memory sticks to the rack.

6

On your way home, tell yourself you deserve a treat. Stop at the froyo place for a small cup of tart with a bit of coconut.Vow to avoid ridiculous flavors and toppings.

7

Oh what the hell, add some pumpkin spice to your bowl! It’s only available for a limited time! Fruity Pebbles or Cap’n Crunch? It’s a Sophie’s Choice of toppings. Add both and recall your childhood, a simpler time when sugary cereal was an acceptable breakfast choice and dairy alternatives were nonexistent.

8

Upon scarfing down the froyo, immediately regret it. Like the movie Scarface, frozen yogurt seems like a classic good idea, but is ultimately overrated.

9

Arrive home. Unpack your items. Realize you forgot to purchase paper.

10

Turn on DIY Network and tune out to an episode of Craft Lab called Origami in 10 Easy Steps. Make a perfect swan out of a Nordstrom Rack receipt. Try to achieve your dreams tomorrow.

Joyce Angela Jellison is a graduate of Massachusetts School of Law and the author of three books. She is also mixed-media visual artist, workshop facilitator and founder of WriteOutLoudBoston!, a nonprofit organization encouraging women of color to write their stories as an empowerment/ survival tool.

HE L L A ND T E A SPO O N S A d r e a m e r ’s r o a d m a p t o a p u r p o s e f u l r e a l i t y.

As a child, I tried digging my way to hell with a teaspoon. I did this in my grandmother’s front yard, burrowing in rich soil and uprooting her rose bushes beneath a complacent North Carolina sun. This was the first big thought – the idea I could meet the devil and question him endlessly. I imagined he would be civil and bemused at my unconventional entrance into his realm. I dug an entire day with no more than a teaspoon and determination. This was me at no more than five years old with a child’s rudimentary understanding of theology. This was the genesis of my big dreaming, thinking and living. The dreaming was endless; visions of who I would become danced in my head like sugarplums on Christmas eve. And every day was the eve of something, the perpetual dawning of beginnings were sunrises and full moons cresting my temples. I was determined I would be in New York by 18, writing, acting, dancing. This is the collective dream of many girls. To paraphrase famed attorney, Charles Darrow, it is not the sleeping boy nor the dream, but rather that which exists beyond the sleeping boy. My dreams at 18 contrasted with what I envisioned at 47 are not much different. They have been translated into moments and those moments into a patchwork life of balancing survival on the pulse of dream and the inhale, exhale of labored reality. At 47 my life has at times, seemed to be small, depending upon the measuring stick upon which I have placed it against. There has always been interferences brutally interrupting and resetting the goals, but I have managed to consistently find my way. There was the birth of my child, the necessity to provide and simultaneously create.

46

I would balance her on my knee as I wrote, still there were always the dreams, pulling and tugging at my insides – resting in my womb along with her. In a sense she was a twin, having been nestled in the basin of me with my persistent dreams I was determined to make real. Shortly after my daughter’s first birthday, I walked into the newsroom of the local weekly newspaper with a high school essay and an article I had written as an intern for a college program. I wanted to report the news and I offered these as proof of my ability. The editor looked at me oddly and took my crisp folder bearing small witness to my future as a journalist. Still, I was emboldened, even a bit validated he did not at once ask me to leave the small cramped offices of the newsroom. I was spinning gold from nothing more than my intentions. I walked away with a job as a stringer, writing articles for 25 dollars a piece. This was my moment. I would be read and my intention had been given life. It began to breathe and demand, it was as my child – fussy, petulant and divined by my actions. My first article appeared within two Sundays and I was ecstatic. It was as if I had given birth yet again. My words, there in black and white. My name above those words. I traced the news print with my fore finger as if they were braille and I could feel the rise of the letters, I imagined I could smell the ink, black and intoxicating. It was my beginning as a writer – a peek into the hole I had begun digging as a child. We struggled with my writer’s life, though within a year I was an editorial assistant at another newspaper. My editor mentioned me to another editor and without an interview I was offered a full time position. I could not sleep with the thought of my new position

peering from behind the fuzziness of tiredness. I had accepted the job without thinking of how I would manage it. I was 24, I couldn’t drive, my husband had left us before my daughter turned two and I was without reliable daycare. But I accepted the position. I leapt at the chance to be in the newsroom every day, to sit before one of those Mac computers and have the comfort of the keys pressing against my fingertips. Within this moment, there were small fractures like chips in window shields – expanding and growing under pressure. There was hunger, late rent payments, the struggle to sustain adequate care for my daughter. But somehow, we were not diminished in our lives. We managed to be enlarged and not made smaller by the salty inevitably combining with the sweet. There were mashed potatoes for dinner and nights we huddled together in the damp coldness of my Boston flat, her small body curled against my bosom. Still I was a writer, forging a way for us through it all. My daughter and I shared these moments, a universe growing in our veins. Me transitioning from the girl dreaming of a New York loft filled with flowers and books, sitting by the window documenting from the inside. I was now a woman with a child in a home filled with odd items collected from yard sales and thrift shops and baby toys. We existed within and on the fringe of the next moment. By the time I was 37, I was an award-winning journalist and author of my first book. Life had become a series of dreams linked to moments that had birthed a life that more often than not felt small when wearing it but appeared larger to those window-shopping, briefly glancing – barely imprinting us on lens and memory. We were an American vision, she and I. The single mother, the career, those racing unbridled dreams given life. My daughter was no longer a small child when I accepted my law degree at 45. She, in accordance with all young women of these times, announced my accomplishment via her Facebook page and in this announcement she linked our past to our present. She reminisced our struggle with homelessness and unemployment. This all to evidence the path, the dreams, those milestones marking moments that grow their own lives do not come without struggle. The path to prosperity is peppered with potholes and often it is necessary to pull oneself from an unexpected wreckage – yet it is the insistence on pulling oneself from the wreckage that occasions many of the accomplishments that have grown small in the rear view mirror of my collective memory. I am no more than a sum of these recollections. Big life? No, an ordinary life with extraordinary dreams transformed into realities that were as once as surreal as digging my way to hell with a teaspoon in the front yard, uprooting rosebushes and wrecking ant-trails along the way.
