ESCAPE THE ORDINARY
Being BOLD is about passion, it’s about being an original and owning it instead of worrying about fitting in. BOLD means finally wearing that curve-hugging dress that's been hanging in the back of your closet for two years to Happy Hour... because you know you rock it. BOLD means you have your own ideas, opinions, preferences, and never pretend you like something just to be polite. When we’re BOLD in our home lives and our work lives, we’re confident in our own vision rather than being self-conscious about not falling into line with the status quo. BOLD is laughing at your own jokes, BOLD is teaching your daughters to reach for the stars, BOLD is being different and not wishing you weren’t. What makes us unique is also what makes us interesting. What a boring world if we all behaved, acted and looked the same. The next time you suppress an opinion with a polite smile, remember that BOLD can change the world. We, the BOLD, can make a new future for ourselves, our families, our friends, our neighborhoods. So what if you rub someone the wrong way because you have an opinion? Live big, live loud, live like you want to do more than just survive. Being BOLD means that you get to thrive. BOLD is beautiful, gorgeous ones, and you’ve got it down. Cover Art: Jackie Besteman Cover Art: Kristen Solecki

Imagining a better world out there starts by imagining a better one in here. Children’s minds can take them anywhere. And while they imagine a world of dinosaurs and spaceships, no child imagines themselves in a hospital. Which is why we’re building one like no other in the world. With specially trained caregivers, medicine and technology, we’ll protect the world they imagine. Imagine What’s Possible

Confront Steve from IT about stealing your coconut-flavored LaCroix from the break room refrigerator.
Demand a raise! Express your authentic feelings, even when you’re uncomfortable!
Bang on your ceiling with a broomstick when your upstairs neighbors blast "Baby" by Justin Beiber at top volume.
Move to Mumbai to work in the slums and save young women from sexual slavery!
Sign a Change.org petition.
Follow your dreams, quit your job, and finally open a bakery!
Start a food blog, while on the clock, at the day job you tolerate.
Take control of your health and perfect the art of self-defense! Finally finish that screenplay! Open your heart to new people and experiences!
Develop a dating app made for smart, complex women like you! Take the leap and buy your first home!
Purchase a Groupon for Krav Maga and let it expire. Admit to yourself you’re never going to finish reading The Goldfinch. And that’s okay. Imagine the conversation you'd have with the panhandler outside of Starbucks on your way to dog sit your friend Megan's Lhaso Apso. Agree to meet a stranger from Tinder for gelato. Look at your credit score.

SPENCER GEORGE
Spencer George is the founder of the #NOTYOURGIRL campaign, which encourages young girls to embrace their true selves. She will be attending Barnard College of Columbia University this fall.
In today’s modern world, boldness is something that is often hard to come by. In one way or another, nearly everyone is forced to conform during some point in their life. You see it on the first day of school, in the workplace, in writing, in music. At the end of the day, almost everyone is trying to be someone or something else. I’ve always been a creative kid, which meant that for most of my education I was also known as the outsider and the loner. It was something that never bothered me until I transferred into a new school halfway through middle school. And all of a sudden, the enormity of my difference hit me with a vengeful and vindictive force. No longer was I allowed to be myself in peace; I was mocked and ridiculed until I gave up the child I had been and became just like everyone else- popular, maybe, but no longer individual. There was nothing particularly interesting about me; I had become the same as everyone else, and as much as I might have liked my new life, I hated what I had to give up for it.
I was never taught to be myself.
In school, I was never taught how to be bold. I was taught how to obtain the best test scores, how to answer multiple choice questions about the Enlightenment and write essays on Shakespeare. But I was never taught how to be an individual; I never learned what it meant to be unique, I never learned to be bold. In short, I was never taught how to be myself. People tell me all the time how impressed they are by how much I know myself. I think the opposite; I don’t know myself at all. But I am seeking an introduction, and I think that is what matters most. I am seeking out that boldness, that uniqueness, that individuality that makes every person different. Because we all have it inside of us; we all have our hidden passions, our secret desires. All these quirks and idiosyncrasies that we were always taught to suppress are what make us individual. It’s time we stop hiding from ourselves and instead look inside and embrace our true selves, even if that means overthrowing everything we’ve always been taught. Be honest about who you are, be bold in your actions and unique in your beliefs, and, to borrow from Whitman, “your very flesh shall be a great poem.”

JONI M. FISHER
Joni M. Fisher is an instrumentrated private pilot, a regular reporter for General Aviation News, and the author of South of Justice. Read more about Joni at JoniMFisher.com.
BECOMING BOLD “Who would’ve thought 110 low lead fuel would be an aphrodisiac?”
Earning my pilot’s license was the boldest thing I have done since kissing Steve Gadow in seventh grade. Kissing Steve put me in the majority of girls in seventh grade, but earning my pilot’s license put me in a minority. Only an underwhelming six percent of the pilot’s licenses are held by women. Why do so few women fly? I’ll tell you. The first reason that some women don’t fly is because of how they are introduced to aviation. When my husband earned his license, he took me up for a ride. Being a guy, he thought like a guy and believed in his heart that demonstrating a simulated engine failure and recovery would instill confidence in his plane-handling abilities. Being a woman, I thought it was a ride in Hell’s theme park. I’ve met a dozen other women who were similarly introduced to aviation and most stayed away afterward. It took months for me to get near another small airplane. Hubby intended to buy a plane and so eventually, I’d be a passenger again. I vowed not to be a helpless one ever again. I hired an instructor to teach me how to radio for help and land the plane. Dear Instructor Don Kohler walked me through radio work, reading the instruments for heading and altitude, and landings. Lots of landings. He demystified the panel of blinking instruments, knobs, and do-dads. His patience gradually built up my confidence and knowledge. I confided in Don that aviation seemed an all-male club, so he introduced me to the legendary Betty Skelton, an aerobatic pilot whose Pitts Special airplane rests in the Smithsonian’s Air & Space collection. Back when women were expected to become teachers, wives, nurses, or secretaries, and mothers, Betty became an aerobatic pilot. Elegant, stylish, and bold, Betty’s passion for flying inspired me. Her plane’s N-number tells how she felt about aerobatic flying—22EZ. I decided to obtain my pilot’s license. I told Handsome my intention. Well, I hadn’t seen him that excited—with his clothes on, anyway—in years. Who would’ve thought 110 low lead fuel would be an aphrodisiac? A second large obstacle for women who want to learn to fly is resources. Flying is expensive and it costs time. Women tend to carry the heavier loads of parenting in terms of time. So to take lessons, certain factors had to converge in perfect synchronicity: the availability of the rental plane, good weather, my daughter’s presence at school, and the availability of the instructor. After six months, I passed the written and practical examinations. Later, after being stranded in Claxton, Georgia due to cloud cover, I trained for and earned my instrument rating. Free to punch through clouds, I embraced flying. Now, Handsome tends to work the fact that I’m a pilot into conver-
30
sations. It always gets a double-take response and raised eyebrows. Never mind that I bore him a daughter and worked at a bank to support us through his grad school years. He brags that I’m a pilot? Men. Go figure. We enjoy life at 8,000 feet. We’ve flown from central Florida as far south as the Cayman Islands; as far east as Crooked Island in the Bahamas; as far west as Las Cruces, New Mexico; and as far north as Mackinac Island, Michigan. We’ve flown to see the Balloon Festival in Albuquerque. We’ve visited Big Bend National Park, and Carlsbad Caverns because we could fly to them. We fly up to North Carolina to enjoy cool summertime weather and brilliant autumn foliage. We take turns to prevent a wrestling match for the left seat, which is where the pilot-incommand sits. The largest obstacle for women in aviation to overcome is fear. I have lost friends in airplane accidents. When traveling at 175 knots, 8,000 feet above the ground and things go wrong, fear can destroy judgment. Firefighters, police, Special Forces soldiers, and fighter pilots all say that the single greatest way to overcome fear and panic is through training, practice, and knowledge, because when an emergency happens—and it will—people revert to their training. Training is what enables us to shove emotion into the backseat. I’ve experienced a few attention-grabbing events. Don taught me simple aerobatics: loops, rolls, and spins. In a spin, you have to do the exact opposite of what instinct dictates to safely recover from the spin. It takes many practices to overcome the urge to follow instinct. Near Muskegon, Michigan, the hydraulic line to the gear motor broke, so I hand-cranked the gear down and we landed safely for repairs. I’ve had a cylinder fail, and software go haywire, and watched a gyro tumble, but through it all, training trumped emotion. What began as boldness—to learn this new skill set and become licensed—has grown into steady confidence. Being bold enough to learn to fly has been deeply rewarding. In 2004, I flew to Marathon in the Florida Keys to resupply friends who had lost power and food after a hurricane. In 2005, I brought my pastor to Pascagoula, Mississippi, so he could inspect the relief efforts of a smaller church post-Katrina to determine whether or not our larger church should send funds. Though I looked out of place among the military pilots and the jet pilots ferrying in FEMA representatives and supplies, I felt at home. Flying has enhanced my marriage, not just because we can travel farther by taking turns at the controls, but because we are doing something we both enjoy. The world of aviation is still maledominated, but I have to say everyone has treated me very well. Being bold has paid off handsomely for me personally and professionally. We have a choice. We can live boldly or look back and wish we had.

MEET ISABEL
Isabel Gray is taking a bold stance.
Isabel doesn’t get stage fright. So she had no problem playing the violin and the ukulele at various fundraisers from a private oyster roast, to The Pour House, to the street during Second Sunday to raise funds for a trip to Antarctica. The 11-year-old, who is attending School of the Arts, said, “It makes me really happy and peaceful and calm when I write and play music.” As for what inspires her, it’s Robert Swan, the first man to walk the North and South Poles unsupported. Isabel heard a speech of his in town, and walked right up to him afterward to talk. Just a few days later, he invited her to join his 2016 expedition to Antarctica. Isabel wasn’t afraid of that idea, either. “I just feel
like traveling is exhilarating because you don’t really know what awaits you on the other side,” she said. She raised funds to pay for her trip, which had a mission to get young people, mostly in their 20s and 30s, inspired to tackle issues of climate change, global warming and alternate energy. Isabel joined that group of about 140 people from 30 countries in March, soaking in the sights of penguins, whales and seals, and learning how melting icebergs not only threaten Antarctica, but also coastal spots like Charleston. Back home, and back in school, she said, “I really want to create a youth activist group and get other people my age inspired about climate change and alternate energy so they can

spread the message.”

MEET LAUREN
Lauren Miller is about bold patterns —and statements. Lauren isn’t afraid to talk to strangers. When it comes to keeping Escapada Living fresh and relevant with the competition, the design strategist is all about people watching and asking people if she can take their picture, if they’re wearing a particularly awesome print. “Whenever I go anywhere, I see the world through color and print and design,” she said. She also does a lot of online research of prints through Pinterest to discover new pattern ideas. Whether she sees an inspiring print in wallpaper, upholstery, or clothing, she said, “I can take something from that and make it Escapada.” But it took work to get here. Lauren received a degree as a theater major with a concentration in costume design at the College of Charleston, went through tough years as a grad
student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco focusing on women’s fashion, then worked as a fashion content designer for a social media gaming company, 50 Cubes. “It was like a virtual little fashion world,” she said. At Escapada, she creates prints in Adobe Illustrator, playing with scale and colors, for the real fashion world. Resort, spring and summer are their latest collections. “Escapada’s print aesthetic is bold,” she said. “Everything we produce is bold and bright and makes a statement.” Lauren says she barely buys solids to wear, opting instead for bold, bright, statement dresses. Her take: “Why would you want to be a wallflower, or why would you want to fade into the background, when you could be seen?”

romance, Bob Cook and Cris Miller met at Cypress when he was a chef and she was a server. Now they are business partners in a side venture, Burnt and Salty. Bob spends most of his time at Cypress affiliate, Artisan Meat Share, where he debuted the Korean mustard he’s been making for the last four years. “It’s quite a unique thing,” he said, and followed his friends’ encouragement to start bottling it to sell. “It started as a service to others,” he said. “We wanted to be able to provide people with unique flavors.” He naturally gravitated toward SoutheastAsian-influenced flavors in the kitchen and wanted to create high quality mustard. He blended ingredients
including sesame oil, Korean pepper powder and garlic to make it happen. He also didn’t overlook the fact that, for every great recipe maker, there is a business guru—that’s where Cris comes in when she’s not serving at Cypress.

Be on the lookout for their Thai Chili in the future. “I have a serious passion for condiments,” Bob said. “I am a condiment nut. My thing is to create new things or redesign condiments people aren’t familiar with.” And in case you’re wondering, Burnt and Salty is cool with being called “the new sriracha.”

ALISON PREECE
Alison Preece’s short stories have appeared in The Huffington Post, Elephant Journal,Thought Catalog and elsewhere. Stay tuned for her first novel about a tribe of Amazon warrior women in New York City.Twitter and Instagram: @APreeceNYC.
LIFE DOESN’T H AV E T O B E W H A T P E O P L E T E L L YO U I T I S “ B y t h e e n d o f t h e c o n v e r s a t i o n , I k n e w t h i s w o u l d b e t h e n e x t c h a p t e r o f m y l i f e .” I was always the one making sensible choices. The only girl in a family of six, I would stare in open wonder as my brothers knocked teeth out during skateboard tricks, while I opted for reading books and penning journals in the shade. Compounding this risk-adverse nature is my fierce independence—I was pushing my mom out the door on my first day of preschool, like I got this. So perhaps it’s no surprise that I spent my 20s with my head down, building a career and bolstering my bank account. Oh sure, I had big dreams. I fantasized about being on Broadway, despite a lackluster singing voice and about as much rhythm as a rhino. I had some acting chops, enough to get into a prestigious conservancy in New York City at the age of 19, but I turned it down, adopting the mindset of my parents and relatives that the odds of success were too low. Instead, I finished college. Then, after a year or so of restless searching, wanting to follow my heart but finding it oddly quiet on where it might want to go, I took an entry-level job in The Corporate World. I had always resisted that route, feeling I was much more of an artist than a businesswoman. But I knew the creative life was one of risk and uncertainty, and I dreaded the idea of crashing on couches or—gulp—borrowing money. So I took the sensible office job. Despite the whitewashed walls and soul-sucking drudgery, it wasn’t so bad, really. I was using my brain in interesting ways, and meeting some pretty awesome people. (We won’t waste any ink on the terrible people.) Sure, I had a dark cloud that followed me around, telling me I’d “sold out” and lamenting the fact that I no longer dreamt, no longer had a future that excited me. That’s just getting older, right? You put away childish whims to become a proper adult. And anyway, the steady paychecks sure felt nice. As I watched the numbers in my bank account tick steadily upwards, I felt stable, protected. While some women found comfort in the steady arms of a boyfriend or the power of a killer mini-skirt, I sought it out in all things fiscally responsible. Retirement fund. Dental insurance. Year-end bonus. I wrapped these phrases around myself like giant cashmere sweaters, cooing in the comfort they afforded me. Alas, it wasn’t enough. Ironically, I think all this stability is what gave me the confidence to seek a different way. As I became proficient at Excel and mastered the fine art of panty hose, the drifting artist within me started to straighten her spine and speak up again, the wounds of old negligence and doubt having scabbed over, healed. I started doing theatre again, auditioning and getting roles—lead roles, even—in indie theatres around Manhattan. The magic of black box theatre, and, more acutely, of realizing my childhood dream of acting on New York City stages, seemed to have an awakening effect on my soul. Suddenly, it all seemed so possible. My future became rife with avenues towards happiness and fulfillment, rather than relegated to mundane monotony. I was no longer steering mind-
44
lessly down the “easy” path laid before me. I regained a sense of ownership over my time, and my mental focus. I started writing again—another one of those outlets that I loved and lost somewhere along the way. First, short stories. Then, I had an idea for a novel, about a rebel tribe of Amazon warrior women in New York City. Rather than let the idea float at the edges of my psyche like cotton candy trailing behind a kid at a carnival, I grabbed it. I held it close. I brought it into my inner most recesses to take seed, grow, and flourish. I couldn’t shrink my work hours but I skipped brunches and bar nights, instead researching, writing. I found the time in the nooks and crannies of my life, writing on the subway, brainstorming plot points during my morning runs, and watched with wonder as it expanded. Breaks in my writing only occurred when I got another part in a play. Then I would really feel the squeeze, growing frustrated at the finite amount of hours in a day. The secure embrace of my sensible day job began to resemble a stranglehold. Gazing at my bank accounts and 401k—a practice which used to calm my nerves—started to provoke a different sort of mindset, nudging something deep within me. Then, one Friday night I was groaning to my boyfriend about this particularly grueling week filled with work, rehearsals, and not enough writing. He is a freelance writer, and has a resounding belief in my talents. He said it pained him to hear me so overextended and unhappy, and it occurred to me that I really was. He was days away from a month-long trip to Thailand, where the cost of living is so low, and beaches so beautiful, and food so good—heaven for a creature-comfort writer. “If you join me, I’ll stay,” he said. “We could travel for months, years. You’ll have space to breath, away from the New York grind.” We talked for hours and hours. Doubts and worries crept up; we dutifully addressed them all. By the end of the conversation, I knew this would be the next chapter of my life. I spent the rest of the weekend verifying the pricing and lifestyle in South East Asia. Monday morning at 9 a.m., I gave my resignation. I remember a little slogan that hung in my 8th grade classroom: “Life doesn’t have to be what people tell you it is.” My parents were upset at my decision. Some co-workers were aghast, and my best friend was nothing short of shocked. But I found that it didn’t really matter what they thought. I knew this was right for me, full stop. We’ve been backpacking for two months now. I’m shopping my novel with publishers, and have begun work on the sequel. I still carefully watch my finances, and do sensible things like pay out of pocket for insurance. But the real comfort comes from knowing I’m actively building a life aligned with my goals and values. I’m doing it all on my dime, and every minute of my day is dedicated to manifesting my dreams. Above all, I truly trust myself and believe I’m building a future worth living. And there’s no greater sense of security than that.

JUMP! H OW I F O U N D M YS E L F AT 1 4 , 0 0 0 F E E T
“ I t i s a p e r f e c t d a y f o r a j u m p .” When I was in my twenties, I wanted to parachute. For many reasons, it was something I never did. Life went on. I graduated college, became a teacher, and married. The years passed until life as I had been accustomed to stopped. I was 60 and divorced. I was lost. Who was I? I remember being asked what I wanted for Christmas and could not even come up with an answer. I did not know what I wanted. I was alone. I didn’t know who I was for so many years I subjugated my desires. What do I do? I begin a journey of finding myself. It starts with a first step. But, in my case, it was a first jump. I wanted to skydive. I recognized that at this point in my life, I did not have to explain and seek approval from parents or a husband; I was my own person. So I decided to seize the opportunity and make that jump out of an airplane. This risky adventure really proved to myself how strong and gutsy I am. I made reservations at the nearest licensed facility and arrived on a sunny, cloudless morning. I thought, “It is a perfect day for a jump.” The first item on the day’s agenda is a briefing. I choose a tandem style jump, as it is the best for a first time jumper. There is very little training required and you are strapped to an instructor by a tandem harness. After viewing a short video describing what to expect when jumping, I sign the papers that said I would not sue nor would my family sue the facility if anything went wrong. I proceed outside to an elevated structure where I am taught the technique for the initial jump from the plane and how to land. Next, it is time to select my jumpsuit. I choose a bright orange jumpsuit that looks to be short enough for my 5’ 2” frame. It fits perfectly. “Surely this is a good omen,” I tell myself. The assistant equips me with a harness which is buckled around my body. I am all dressed up and definitely have a place to go. As I walk to the tarmac, I realize that it is just long enough that one could reconsider. “Nope, not me,” I think. Feeling elated that I am finally going to jump, my only concern is that it would feel just like being on a roller coaster, and my stomach would lurch into my throat.
As I approach the plane, I become more excited. I am sure it is the adrenaline rush. I meet my instructor and all of us— three students and three instructors along with a videographer climb aboard and join the pilot. There are no seats and we all sit on the floor of the plane with each student in front of the instructor. I am buckled to my instructor’s harness and told not to loosen the buckles. That is a safety rule that I am definitely obeying. The plane climbs to 14,000 feet, which takes about 20 minutes. I listen to the hum of the plane’s engine as it climbs higher into the atmosphere. When we reach the correct altitude, my instructor and I are the last to jump as the videographer goes first followed by the others. We scoot to the open door, sit on the ledge with my feet dangling, and as I look down at the earth, I am excited, happy, and fearless. I am about to experience an incredible adventure. I realize that I am definitely going to leap out of a perfectly good airplane. The instructor tells me to have fun, counts to three, and we leap out of the plane! We freefall for about 60 seconds. It feels as if you are floating over a very strong fan. The feeling of my stomach in my throat does not happen. The wind is noisy, and my face moves just like the flapping jowls of a dog with its head stuck out the car window. I am smiling and feeling the cold as it is about 25 degrees cooler at that altitude. During freefall, you are travelling to the earth at 120 mph. What an exhilarating feeling! I see the curvature of the earth and the ground rushing toward me. The 60 seconds goes by quickly. The instructor pulls the ripcord, and I am jerked upward, and all becomes silent. It is so quiet that my instructor and I are able to talk and hear each other easily. He lets me control the chute and we do spins and float along the air currents. I am ecstatic as I fly! As my instructor and I near the ground, I am reminded to pull my legs up and we smoothly land on our butts. As we sit on the soft grass, I laugh with joy and want to immediately do it again. My first jump is an awesome adventure! And best of all, I found myself at 14,000 feet. I learned that I choose how I want to live. It is my life and I alone decide my path. Now that is thrilling!
“I LAUGH WITH JOY AND WANT TO IMMEDIATELY DO IT AGAIN.”
