DECEMBER CHARLESTON, USA
ESCAPE THE ORDINARY
There’s always a little magic at this time of year, in merry wishes and long holiday weekends, in being surrounded by the ones we love,in the arms around us,in the laughter that brings us to tears. December evenings feel like they last forever while time flies around us, strolling through streets lit with twinkling lights, our arms filled with bags and bows. The preparations feel endless, while the festivities go by in a flash. Let’s flip the switch, make the priorities less of a chore and the celebrations the point. The shopping and the wrapping and baking and cleaning can be outsourced but the magic moments cannot. Love the imperfection of a messy house full of sing-song voices, the disaster of a kitchen can wait while we linger at the table into the late hours, embrace the ones we love forever no matter how long their flight is delayed. No taking bets on who melts down first this year, no allowing an imperfect dish to steal the show. Make your own soundtrack to the season with love and laughter and stories of holidays past, let the chores become traditions, the errands become adventures, and nothing shall be more important than the people who grace our lives. So it is declared, and so it shall be: Magical missions come first, obligations and clean kitchens are at the end of the list, after enchanted evenings, charming guests, making memories, and the music in our hearts. Raise a sparkling glass to you and yours and this endless season. Another year is right around the corner.

Single? Make your relationship goals as successful as everything else you do. I have always succeeded in everything I tried to do. I have a great career, nice home, financially stable and my life is great! That’s how Stephanie a local professional woman describes her life. She sets goals and achieves them in everything. Everything except relationships! You know it’s almost like all the professional, successful men in Charleston disappeared or are already in relationships, she says. I’ve tried, you know the internet, even met a guy that said he was 55, his picture was attractive and we met for lunch...he was 75! That was bad enough, but one guy I met became a bit of a stalker and showed up at my office. That one scared me! My friends are busy and don’t know many other singles and my job......well, that’s off limits! Maybe dating is just out of the question for me.
These are the stories we hear everyday from single men and women right here in the Charleston area. Their frustration in dating has put them in a place where they have almost given up on relationships but they took one more try. They called South Carolina Matchmakers. Why? Because we have the experience and clients that allow you to find someone truly compatible with you. We are local and meet with all potential clients to assess their relationship goals and everyone is screened to ensure safety. We are Charleston’s leading professional matchmaking service and want to help you find a truly rewarding relationship.

The Phantom in the Pantry
Anita Stafford
I
Soon I found the pantry door open yet again and I abandoned caution. I grabbed the doorknob and swung the door open in one bold, quick move. I scanned the pantry. No apparitions were visible, but more clues were on the floor. This time several Cheetos had been left behind, and one was crushed into powder. Something uninvited had walked through the pantry and stepped on a Cheeto. There was no doubt about it. The pantry was being visited by an unknown being. Rifling the Cheetos was its calling card. This spook had not revealed itself to me, but I knew it was there. You don’t have to see a ghost to know you have one. All you need is evidence showing where it has been. A door that keeps opening all by itself and Cheetos strewn on the floor are proof enough for me. It’s obvious I’m not alone here. This poltergeist must be the spirit of some annoying snack food glutton don’t know how ghosts are viewed in all parts that has taken up residence in the pantry. of the country, but here in the South if someone claims a place is I knew my husband might have doubts about a ghost being haunted, it won’t be long until a ticket booth will be set up out in our house, but I had to tell him about my bizarre discovery. Dear most magical time of the year, despite your air of romance and cheerful nostalgia, there are a few things you should watch for.
DEAR MOST MAGICAL TIME OF THE YEAR...
To start, you might want to pipe down a bit, since you’re drowning out all of the top pop by your epidemic of joyful holiday tunes. If “Santa Baby” comes on the radio one more time, I’m giving up. Dear most magical time of the year, I know you’re all about giving, but sacrificing my sandals for furry boots hurts. How can I possibly stick my toes into the sand now? There’s also that issue of trading in swimsuits for sweaters. Grant us the wisdom to know the difference between the style that is appropriate for an ugly sweater party and the style that is appropriate for the work day. Fluff and pencil skirts don’t mix. Dear most magical time of the year, let’s give the giant inflatable yard decorations a break, shall we? Kids like classical, twinkling lights, too. Ease off on the minty magic, too— is it really necessary for everything to taste and smell like peppermint? PSA: Reevaluate if you find yourself burning a Candy Cane Yankee Candle while sipping a Skinny Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks and nibbling on a hunk of Ghiradelli Peppermint Bark. You have gone overboard. Dear most magical time of the year, there should be a special Fitbit calorie calculator just for you. You’ve already turned my waistline from slim to muffin status. You owe me my body back. You also owe me one extra hour of my life just for what you have done to the mall lines. Dear most magical time of the year, I blame you for the lack of a practical life skills class that could have educated me about the proper gift-wrapping method. There are misshapen blobs under my tree. Dear most magical time of the year, above all, I beg you to spare me from embarrassing displays at the office holiday party. Give me the strength to avoid the karaoke machine planted right next to the spiked punch.

David Flegle sees to it that the city lights up.
Though he was recently appointed Charleston’s Assistant Superintendent for Facilities Maintenance, he has coordinated the city’s holiday lights for 25 years. The focus for the last decade has been Marion Square, which he and his team members lace with 33 cases’ worth of white string lights. He and his coworkers, who maintain more than 200 city buildings, parks and fountains on an average day, make the holiday magic happen. Starting at the end of October, they wrap all of the Square’s small trees on the weekends, hooking them up to different power sources around the park for visitors to view. “I want them to look at it and enjoy it and know we did a good job.” David reserves a pop of color for the 60-foot cable Christmas tree, which he wraps in garland and 9,000 LED lights, topped with a 5-foot star. “During the day it doesn’t really look that pretty but, at night, it’s awesome. That’s the big transformation.” This happens to be his favorite display, too. “It’s neat when you go inside of it and it’s lit, and you look up at it at night and turn. It makes you kind of dizzy.” But he said the true magic isn’t put to the test until the tree is lit the first Saturday in December. And the magic isn’t the lights. “It’s the people. It’s amazing how many people come out to see that.”

In a way, Nancy Sommer still believes in Santa.
“I believe in the magic that Santa Claus brings at Christmas.” Fittingly, she keeps her Magnifilous Toy Emporium well-stocked with toys that she characterizes as “samples” from Santa – from life-sized stuffed animals, to jigsaw puzzles, to building toys, to arts and craft sets, to make-believe toys like pretend doctor kits. Nancy, who co-owns the Emporium with her husband Blane, aims to appeal to a broad spectrum of ages, “with more classic toys that require imagination.” The business itself is something she and Blane dreamed up, after all. The two come from medical professions and pinpointed the toy trade as their next hobby – which has now stretched out to four Christmas seasons. “We’re from a big family of game players.” But Nancy’s inventory doesn’t follow rules – or trends. In her mind, she is meant to match the customer to the toy. “The most popular toy is the toy that your child is going to enjoy and is going to enjoy for a long time.” And with Christmas just around the corner, it’s the Sommers’ busiest work season of all. Not to mention their busiest play season. “We have provided a visually spectacular place for people to come in and renew themselves with their sense of wonder. It’s just a place to come in and remember how to play.”

Carmen Scott has granted wishes for eight years.
The Motley Rice attorney is on the board of directors for Make-A-Wish South Carolina, but her true charm comes with her role as a Wish Granter with the nonprofit. Every other month or so, she sits down with a family who has a child with a life-threatening medical condition to dig up details about that child’s deepest dreams. She notices a lot of kids wishing to see the magic at Disney World, to travel. “It’s an opportunity for these families to spend time together in a very special place.” But the magic works locally, too. Carmen recalls meeting one little boy who had to stay inside, connected to oxygen. She helped grant his wish to play sports through a Wii program and to have pizza at his favorite spot in Goose Creek, accompanied by the policemen who were his heroes. “It really does so much for the family because in this one speck of time in their lives they are allowed to put everything aside…and create memories they will have for a lifetime.” She has granted wishes from shopping sprees to jump castle jubilation. That list has swayed her own wish for the holiday season: “Just spending time with my own family … It makes you realize how fortunate we are to be healthy and happy, so I want to share every moment over the holidays with my children that I can.”

Mighty Aphrodite
G
reat Gods of Olympus! I was so sure the white ceramic bust was the Greek goddess Athena that I would have bet my gold worry beads on it. The head is about 10 inches high and sits on a squat wooden pedestal. My mother carefully carried her back from a 1974 trip to Athens and assigned her a place of reverence on the mantle above the fireplace. When my mother passed away two years ago, I rescued the statue from her cluttered condo. One month ago I took the bust from storage and placed it on my own mantle. I had just returned from a spiritual retreat in which we learned to use divine archetypes as partners in manifestation. I decided that the powerful war goddess might be a good co-creator with me. I mean isn’t Athena the kind of deity who gets things done? “Wise, Athena,” I implored my goddess statue that afternoon. “Can you give me a boost with the book I’m trying to sell? And I’d welcome your help on any other projects that would benefit from your generosity and intelligence.” Athena stared back through rather empty white eyes. I thought she might look a little more cheerful about my work (in addition to war, she is also the goddess of arts and crafts after all). But no. My goddess was giving me nothing. “It’s okay,” I told her. “We just need some time to get to know each other.” Just then I heard something thud against the large picture window in the living room. I looked over at Athena who was pursing her tight, ceramic lips. When I went outside, a grey mourning dove was lying on my front walk: face up, eyes closed, wings spread open to the sky. In 17 years of living in this house, I couldn’t recall another bird-meets-window fatality. “What do you think about that?” I asked Athena when I went back inside unsure of how to dispose of the bird. When Athena didn’t answer, I grabbed my laptop and, just for kicks, Googled around for the mystical meaning of “doves.” Here’s what came up: The dove is associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite. I typed “Aphrodite head” into the search bar and pressed “images.” Holy Hellenica: there was my bust. I shamefully approached my goddess. “My deepest apologies, Aphrodite,” I told her. “I always just assumed you were Athena. How can I make it up to you?” Her white eyes seemed to roll a bit. Or was she trying to cast them in the direction of the dove that had been sacrificed for my stupidity? The dove! I found a gauzy turquoise cloth and a white scallop shell from summer beach combing. I buried the delicate bird in the blue shroud under some grape vines and placed a white votive in the

shell. Somehow Aphrodite had worked her way out of antiquity into my world, and no way was I disrespecting her anymore. In the following days, I not only studied the attributes and associations of the goddess of love, but I honored her with all my heart. I brought her pomegranates, grapes and roses cut from my garden. I adorned her with a pearl choker that I set on her graceful curls like a crown. I also lit a candle for her every day and at night, oh night, I would steal down into my basement room and, blasting Vivaldi or Lady Gaga, would dance around with Aphrodite. “You are Mighty, Aphrodite,” I said whenever I passed the bust on the mantle. “And I am trying to live by your creed of love.” On the day that she finally smiled back, I could tell we were aligned. That’s when I dared to ask for another sign. “But only if you want to give me one,” I added. That afternoon I found a flattened copper pipe on the pavement next to our house. “Wow,” my husband Mark said when I brought it inside and shined it with salt water. “You don’t usually find copper lying around. It’s so valuable.” “It wasn’t lying around,” I said. “The goddess Aphrodite gave it to me.” “Aphrodite? She gave you a copper pipe?” “Yeah,” I explained. “She was developed by the Phoenicians who brought her to Cyprus. When Cyprus eventually became Greece’s main source of copper, Aphrodite became associated with the metal.” “Right,” Mark said. “What else has Aphrodite done for you?” “Come upstairs and I’ll show you!” An hour later Mark believed in Aphrodite’s powers, too, and for my birthday that week gave me a card imprinted with Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus.” “The Roman version of Aphrodite,” he explained. “Oh I know,” I said. “I’ve been talking to the planet Venus at dawn every day. It’s one of her things.” “Is that why you get out of bed so early?” “Are you complaining considering what’s been happening in bed every night?” He wasn’t. Not at all. And later that day when I was carded for buying a bottle of birthday wine to share with my goddess, I didn’t complain either. I just handed over my license that showed my age to be a few decades beyond 21. “Thank you, Aphrodite,” I said. To say the weeks got weirder isn’t right. The word is magical. Walking beside our town pond on Monday, I happened upon a white card embossed with a blue scallop shell. A few steps later, I found a five-dollar bill from the same goddess associated with the number five. I used it to buy five one-dollar lottery tickets and won all five times. Which brings me to today: the fifth of the month. I will wear my sea green sweater and eat grapes in the afternoon. I will drink wine during my evening dance and, late in the night, will make love to my husband of 18 years. And when Aphrodite sends the next precious treasure my way, I won’t be surprised. I will just gratefully thank my beautiful and beneficent goddess and carry on doing her work in the world: loving with body, mind, heart and soul.

WOW!
EAST SIDERS MATTER It began because he was helping another artist with a project, but local artist and photographer Jack Alterman began to photograph residents of the East Side every Saturday and Sunday in October. The result? His exhibit, East Siders Matter, on display on the fence surrounding Fraser Elementary (63 Columbus Street). It’s a mustsee stop!
