The February 2016 It Takes Two Issue

FEBRUARY

CHARLESTON, SC

ESCAPE THE ORDINARY

When our one becomes two, and we let ourselves be vulnerable, we try so hard to lose ourselves in someone else, and end up wondering why we ever wanted to do it in the first place. But there’s a reason why it’s called “falling in love.” We can’t help doing it, or who we fall for, but when we do we fall hard. The beauty of it is that we can’t control the outcome. But we can control the stories we tell ourselves, the way we think about what we’ve lost, and as we get older, we discover the heart can bear the weight of inimitable sadness—and infinite joy. Love is a human condition and without it, we’d be shades of black and white instead of living in full color high-def. It takes two to begin the story of us and we should have no regrets. This year, we hope that you write your own love story, the story that began as soon as you realized your heart could be broken, the one that led you down the path to happiness, or compromise, or the kind of love that makes you feel like you landed on the set of a romantic comedy, ridiculous and giddy and full of candlelight and romance. There’s so much beauty in the world and in ourselves. Write the story, rewrite the ending, and always be the heroine. Life is too short to carry love as a burden; love lights the world, it’s everywhere we look. Look inside, darlings. It’s in there too. Your very own love story. Fall hard. It’s worth it.

“Let your heart guide you. It whispers so listen carefully.” The Land Before Time

Dear Matchmaker I have found myself reading your blog and, unfortunately, relating to much of it. I have been single for over 6 years and in that time I have joined and deleted more dating profiles from so many different sites that I can no longer keep track of which one’s I have tried and which one’s I have not. The biggest issue that I run into is that those that are on many of these sites, say that they want a serious commitment, and are tired of the dating games, but in the end it seems that all they do is play games. I have had ladies start chatting and then when it comes to meeting, they always back out or just kind of disappear. I am a stable, professional man, I take care of my health and am just looking for someone that wants the same things in this life. What am I doing wrong? Sincerely, Dan B. – Charleston,SC Hi Dan, Thank you for your letter. I want to start out with stating that there is NOTHING wrong with you, and you are not alone with your concerns and frustrations. Online dating is a wonderful and Horrible beast all in its own. For starters, there are THOUSANDS of “singles” online, so if you are looking for a tool to just scroll through pictures and chat, well then this is ideal. The problem with online dating is that it also gives everyone the ability to create whatever persona that they can imagine. I have always told the members that I work with that if they are going to try online dating to keep a few things in mind.. Anyone with access to the internet can join an online dating service and for a few of these sites, they do not even need a debit or credit card to do so. This means that you literally have NO idea where these “people” are actually filling out their information from. Professional Matchmakers are one on one and get to know exactly who you are. Which would you prefer someone that listens or just another blurb on another site?

South Carolina Matchmakers is a highly selective Matchmaking service right here in Charleston. FEATURES

IN THIS ISSUE

This issue, we’ll give you a “two-do” list, what we heart (and you will too), touching and funny essays about matters of the heart, an open letter to the Hallmark holiday we all love to hate, pairs we love and adore (at the table and at the bar), and pages of dos, don’ts, and pro tips for an amazing wedding day, whether yours is near or far, and sage advice “in her own words” from the 17-year-old founder of the #NOTYOURGIRL campaign that just might make you re-think how you feel about yourself. Instead of “meet-cutes,” we have profiles of perfect pairs—people who are great on their own, but together? Smashing success. So skip the chalky Valentine’s candy hearts and settle into this month’s issue with a fine red and a box of the best dark chocolates you can get your gorgeous hands on. We had so much fun putting this issue together, thank you for letting us show our love for you!

ALISON HARRIMAN Alison Harriman is a lover of words, writing, and reading who teaches college writing, and sometimes short stories, at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She is also a wife, mother of three young adults, and a gym rat.

Together for the Long Haul WE H AD N O MO N EY, BU T BOY DI D WE HAVE F UN.

The first time I caught my parents having just had sex, I subconsciously knew I wanted some of that. As my father exited the bedroom holding his boxer shorts in front of him, my mother glowed in the aftermath while her red lace panties lay on the rug beside the bed. Later, that same summer, I kissed a boy for the first time in the rental house next to ours in Sea Isle City, NJ. The kiss wasn’t special. I was 10. Over the next few years, I began falling in “love” on a regular basis. My best girlfriend was two years older, and I learned what to look for from her. I quickly fell into the pattern of boy watching on the beach by day and the boardwalk by night. We hung out with some orphan boys who stayed in a large house by the ocean sponsored by the Catholic Church. In the winters, she hung around with a large crowd of guys and girls in South Philly. Through junior high and early high school, I ‘dated’ a few of her friends which amounted to a lot of nervous handholding and a few quick kisses on the front stoop, edging into longer kisses at high school parties. When it came to real love, I suppose I can lay claim to three. Like Goldilocks, I tried a variety. The first was close to my age, but sadly boring and predictable. The next one was much older. When he got sick, he quickly grew meaner until he became a danger to my well-being. Then, one day as I stood in La Crepe, the mall restaurant where I waitressed, it happened. I found my one and only. I was standing near the cash register, and he was behind the bar filling the ice bins. He stood up and turned toward me, and I melted at the sight of his dark curly hair, his lean 6’2” frame, and his startling blue eyes that looked like cracked marbles. We briefly made eye contact. “Who the hell is that?” I whispered to my girlfriend, Kathy, who was working the register. “’Him?’ that’s just my kid brother, Stephen,” she replied as if I was crazy. “He’s working here until he leaves for the Air Force.” A few weeks later, Kathy invited me to a party at her aunt’s house because I was lonely. I drank my first beer ever while sitting next to Stephen as we played poker with a tableful of their relatives, and then I drank a couple more. Despite breaking the “girl rule” of never getting involved with a friend’s brother, I fell for this several-years-youngerthan-me, sexy, quiet guy with a dry sense of humor who was planning to leave PA for basic training. He seemed “just right” as Goldilocks would have said. We were soon dating which made Kathy livid, so we were soon dating in ‘secret’ even though they were sharing the rent on an apartment. Months passed and he left for Lackland AFB, in TX. We continued to talk all the time and wrote each other sexy, romantic letters. When he came home on his first leave,

38

he visited me, not his family. I had never known such passion or such longing when he had to leave. Soon, we made plans to marry in June of 1982. He came home for our backyard wedding, but after two weeks he left to start working with flight simulators. Then, in September he came to whisk me off to Mountain Home, ID, where he was stationed for the next few years. We drove across the country in a U-haul truck towing my little Nissan and having “I’ve-missedyou-so- much” sex in a number of motels as we passed through state after state. At last, we were finally alone thousands of miles from everyone we had ever known in military housing in the middle of a one-horse desert. Stephen’s mother was sure this move would make or break us as a couple. It made us. We had no money, but boy did we have fun. We traveled all over the NW with a two man tent and an inflatable air mattress that we christened in campground after campground. We eventually covered the whole West coast from Carmel to Port Angeles, WA, and up to Victoria Island, Banff, Lake Louise, and east to Calgary. We camped outside the Tetons and Yellowstone, Salt Lake City, and Lake Tahoe. We visited zoos and baseball fields hand in hand, step by step. We lost a child together in Mountain Home, and we gave birth to our first daughter there. Then, we drove across the country with our Black Lab and a three-week-old to Dayton, OH where Stephen trained for his first civilian job. We then drove to Abilene, TX, where we lived for nearly two yearsmaking the most fun out of our few dollars and our new family. We lost another baby there, but we grew closer as we watched our joyous daughter grow. When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, his company was going to move us to North Dakota. Instead, he got a job in PA, so we packed ourselves up and drove home. We lived with his mother for nearly a year. I became pregnant with our second daughter there and two weeks before she was born, he landed a new job that paid for her delivery, allowed him to stay with us for a week after her birth, and we signed papers for our first house. While living there, we had our son and started the kids in school. When Stephen was offered a promotion, we took off once again to make a home together in NH. For the last 16 years, we have raised our three children, put them through college, married one off and survived job losses and changes, cancer, and the passing of two dogs- together. When I was 10, I thought the gleam in my mother’s eye was everything. As we move toward our 34th anniversary this June, I know that without Stephen, my life would have been a lot more boring and a lot lonelier. As my mother said when I first told her about him, “The good thing about the young ones is that you can train them.” Lucky for me, he has been a quick study.

The rooms in the Balsam Mountain Inn, built in 1908 and known as the “Grand Old Lady of Balsam,” are free of TVs and phones, and quiet hours begin at 10 p.m. Settle in at 3,500 feet with a soak in a clawfoot tub, surrounded by history. The Balsam Mountain Inn was originally built as a 100-room hotel serving guests arriving by rail. The corridors were actually constructed with a width meant to accommodate visitors’ steamer trunks. Though the times have changed, the venue has offered 50 rooms and suites ever since its 1990 restoration. While you’re exploring the space (hint: there’s a library), don’t overlook the “Art in the Mountains” hallway gallery spotlighting the works of local artists and craftsmen. Enjoy the silence. It’s so rare these days!

Saramel Evans and Sara Grimshaw serve up health with a side of love. These certified Jivamukti yoga teachers met when they were servers at Cypress. Now they’re serving vegetarian and vegan dishes at their new President Street establishment, Gnome. Sara, who was inspired by her yoga practice to embrace veganism, says, “I feel happier, I feel healthier. I want other people to realize how good it feels.” One feel-good dish is the hemp sausage biscuit for breakfast. “We’re going for the fast-food biscuit vibe with a fluffy, buttery biscuit,” Sara says. (Think hemp seeds plus pepper jelly garnish.) Then there is the fried seitan sandwich available for lunch (with a buffalo-style option), which Sara says has the same mouth-feel as chicken. Their restaurant has a feeling, too.

“We wanted something that felt kind of green, felt kind of natural but didn’t feel in-yourface,” she says. So the name “Gnome” hits the spot—it has the same sound of the words “home,” and “om.” Besides, both women love the story and illustrations behind the children’s book called “Gnomes,” which depicts the creatures as vegetarian. While you may not find actual gnomes when you step into their café, you can expect to find Sara in the kitchen with chef Terese Dessuit, while Saramel flashes her hostess skills in the front of the space. Saramel’s take is that, for customers going the vegetarian/vegan route, “there doesn’t have to be any harm in what they eat, it doesn’t have to be hard.” As for the secret ingredient throughout? “We use a lot of love,” Saramel says.

JESS HERNANDEZ Jess Hernandez is a Northwest native and the mother of two. She’s married to the bastard son of a Spanish pop star and has a form of mutant diabetes.

Disgusting Is the New Sexy I N S O ME OT H ER BEDRO OM, T H IS C O U L D EAS I LY BE S O ME S O RT O F FI FT Y SHADES REENAC TMENT, B U T IT ’S N OT. I N FACT, N OT H I N G CO U LD BE F URTHER FRO M T H E T R U T H . It’s my first time and I’m nervous as all hell. I’m lying on my side, naked with my head resting on a down pillow. My legs curl under me and I face the wall. My husband stands out of sight behind me, but I know he’s holding something in his hand. It’s white and bullet-shaped and meant to go in my rear end. “This might be uncomfortable at first,” he says, “but I think you might come to appreciate it.” Neither his words nor the Brahms in the background manage to sooth my anxiety. I grit my teeth. His hand on my bottom makes me yelp. “I haven’t even done anything yet. Just relax,” he says. In some other bedroom, this could easily be some sort of Fifty Shades reenactment, but it’s not. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. My dutiful husband is helping me insert a hemorrhoid suppository. Normally I would consider this above and beyond the call of spousal duty, but I am so hugely pregnant I can no longer maneuver enough to do it myself. I look like a T-Rex with glandular issues. My husband takes another run at me and finishes the job. “Heigh ho, Hemorrhoid, away!” I grunt. Rolling over, I see him calmly removing a blue latex glove and tossing it in the trash. His eyes crinkle with amusement, but I see no sign of the revulsion I fear. He’s just seen me at my absolute worst—puffy, petulant, and with a hemorrhoid that’s growing into a vestigial tail. In short, I am all kinds of hideous. And then he pulls me close and gives me a kiss. “No worries,” he says. “I still love you.” Our standards for acceptable behavior as a couple have dropped considerably in the last nine years. I think back to the first time our relationship drifted from indecorous to downright disgusting. We’d been married a whopping two days. My new husband stood in the hotel bathroom, looking over his shoulder and examining his back in the mirror. I sat on the loveseat reading. “Hey, babe,” he called, “can you give me a hand for a second?” “Sure,” I said, tossing the book aside and hustling to assist. (I was rather eager to please as a new bride–kind of like a Labrador puppy.) “What do you need?”

58

“Can you pop this zit on my back? I can’t reach it.” He gestured to a massive whitehead on his shoulder blade. The thing was gigantic. I half expected it to sprout limbs, push itself free, and climb down under its own power. “You want me to pop your pimple for you?” I repeated, aghast. My can-do good wife attitude wilted a little. This was not supposed to happen on a honeymoon. Honeymoons were for sex and romance and birds chirping 80’s love ballads while doing fly-bys in heart formation. Potentially squirting myself with another person’s puss did not figure into the equation. Besides, weren’t you supposed to keep a little mystery in your relationship? Isn’t that what everyone said? I’d read articles about that sort of stuff during our engagement, confident that with enough research, I would knock this marriage thing out of the park. There’d been nothing in the literature about pimples. “Do you mind?” my husband asked, unaware of my internal struggle. “It really hurts.” I steeled my resolve and tried to ignore my revulsion. My sweetheart was in pain. I had to act. It was every bit as gross as I had imagined. And it only got worse. In the next few years, I mopped up vomit, trimmed errant ear hair, and sat with him while he prepped for not one, but two colonoscopies. I checked incision scars after his gallbladder was removed, learned to trim back hair with a set of clippers, and put cream on a hard-to-reach foot fungus. On his side, he caught a sneeze in the mouth while making out, got puked on, and witnessed my “pooping on the table during childbirth” routine. The suppository is just one more item on a growing list of gross stuff. And as I sit here with my bum in the air about as vulnerable as a person can be, I realize something I didn’t understand as a blushing bride: it’s okay to be gross with your spouse. In fact, while I’d never aspire to be in the position, I’m glad this is the kind of relationship we have. Because if I have to choose between having mystery in my marriage and having trust—the kind of trust that lets you be unabashedly disgusting because you know the other person will still love you—I’m going to choose the trust every time. But I definitely wouldn’t choose the hemorrhoid. That just plain sucked.

WHAT A DOLL When 11-year-old Anja Busse noticed that there were no accessories for dolls with diabetes, she created a Change. org petition asking American Girl to fill this gap in their product collection—and they listened! American Girl’s diabetic care kit for its dolls was released last month.

WOMEN’S HISTORY APP Thanks to a collaboration between Google and SPARKsummit.com, a women’s organization for young women, now it’s easier to follow in the footsteps of the world’s greatest women. Add the new feature to Google’s existing Field Trip app (FieldTripper.com), and your phone will send you notifications when you’re near a spot where a woman did something of historical significance. You can even contribute your own female heroes!

LABEL LOVERS Kate Spade’s new workout collection inspires us to schedule our workouts in pen... in a Kate Spade classic planner, of course.

AN AD AFTER OUR HEARTS We love this gym, but this “woman-power” ad campaign really speaks to us. Kudos to a great campaign.

1. Sign up to be an organ donor at LifePoint-SC.org. 2. Carry your donor card in your wallet at all times. Organ donation saves thousands of lives every year. Specializing in organ transplant for more than two decades, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) offers the only comprehensive organ transplant medical center in our state. 1. Collect all the stuff. 2. Donate to Goodwill. Your donations allow Goodwill to help millions of people train for careers and get the supporting services they needed to be successful — such as English language training, additional education, or access to transportation and child care. 1. Test smoke alarm batteries. 2. If you haven’t already, install carbon monoxide detectors. Smoke alarms do not detect CO, but you can buy combo smoke and CO detectors. Each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning not linked to fires, more than 20,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 4,000 are hospitalized. 1. Eat your green leafies for iron and folate. 2. Donate your quality blood. See RedCrossBlood.org for locations and information. Blood (whole blood) can be donated every 56 days. Platelets can be donated every 7 days, up to 24 times per year. 1. Buy a sandwich or meal to go. 2. Give it to a homeless person. Cash is often a bad idea if it might be used for drugs, but buying food is a good gesture.

See you in March for The Happiness issue!

Imagining a better world out there starts by imagining a better one in here. Children’s minds can take them anywhere. And while they imagine a world of dinosaurs and spaceships, no child imagines themselves in a hospital. Which is why we’re building one like no other in the world. With specially trained caregivers, medicine and technology, we’ll protect the world they imagine. Imagine What’s Possible
