JANUARY CHARLESTON, USA
ESCAPE THE ORDINARY
We love the endless possibilities that come with the turn of a new year. It’s an opportunity to press Control-Alt-Delete on our lives, make important lists, to stop aspiring and start inspiring. A clean slate means we can be or do anything. This year, we’re going to finally be a hat person. We’re going to sign our daughters up for Girls Who Code and take the class right along with them. We’re going to start that backyard garden, window box herb garden, or keep that lucky bamboo alive past March. Out with the old...in with the new. This is the year we’re going to make time for philanthropy, for regular massages, for weekly dinners with friends, for movies that aren’t at home on Netflix, for lengthy phone conversations with far away pieces of our hearts, for quiet evenings by the fire and forgetting where we put our phones. We’re going to be regulars at 7 a.m. yoga classes, stop complaining about the size of our thighs and start shopping for dresses that show them off, walk more, drive less, and finally buy that adorable beach cruiser bike we’ve had our eye on with a bell on the handlebars to let everyone know we’re coming. The possibility of a new year means that we can scrap all of those abandoned projects and start new ones, wiping the slate clean so we can do more of what we love and less of what we don’t. It’s a new year movement and we’re all in.

Dear Matchmaker I have found myself reading your blog and, unfortunately, relating to much of it. I have been single for over 6 years and in that time I have joined and deleted more dating profiles from so many different sites that I can no longer keep track of which one’s I have tried and which one’s I have not. The biggest issue that I run into is that those that are on many of these sites, say that they want a serious commitment, and are tired of the dating games, but in the end it seems that all they do is play games. I have had ladies start chatting and then when it comes to meeting, they always back out or just kind of disappear. I am a stable, professional man, I take care of my health and am just looking for someone that wants the same things in this life. What am I doing wrong? Sincerely, Dan B. – Charleston,SC Hi Dan, Thank you for your letter. I want to start out with stating that there is NOTHING wrong with you, and you are not alone with your concerns and frustrations. Online dating is a wonderful and Horrible beast all in its own. For starters, there are THOUSANDS of “singles” online, so if you are looking for a tool to just scroll through pictures and chat, well then this is ideal. The problem with online dating is that it also gives everyone the ability to create whatever persona that they can imagine. I have always told the members that I work with that if they are going to try online dating to keep a few things in mind.. Anyone with access to the internet can join an online dating service and for a few of these sites, they do not even need a debit or credit card to do so. This means that you literally have NO idea where these “people” are actually filling out their information from. Professional Matchmakers are one on one and get to know exactly who you are. Which would you prefer someone that listens or just another blurb on another site?
South Carolina Matchmakers is a highly selective Matchmaking service right here in Charleston. Why not take just a moment and contact them today at 843-310-0201 or southcarolinamatchmakers.com 147218-XX-5.indd 1 CHSSK_160100_0012-00021.indd 18

Meet Me, the Writer Jen Bamberg
W
Julia Cameron, learning how to get past whatever was blocking our creativity, and discovered that feeling like a creative fraud is normal and ubiquitous. (Join the club. We take all kinds.) I’ve read my way through towers of writing books teetering on my nightstand and blocking my lamp, shade included. I now have two more journals filled with story ideas, personal anecdotes potentially worth retelling, titles for unwritten pieces, favorite words, what I ate for breakfast, and yes, how annoyed I was with my husband or best friend that day. That’s 10 times more writing than I’ve done in the previous five years. Woohoo! Huzzah! Am I published? No. Have I posted anything new on my blog? Uh, no. So what’s to celebrate? I feel like a Writer. I’m writing consistently, be it brilliantly or mundanely. I have goals. I have working essays. I have submission ideas and deadlines. But mostly, I’m just writing. And for me, it’s the doing that makes me feel successful, fills that void e all have things in our lives I had allowed myself to ignore, unaware of what I was searching we wish we could change. But do we actually change them? So for save that nagging, clichéd, “something’s missing from my often, resolutions are forgotten or worse yet, never made. I’m life but what the hell is it?” feeling. And if you’re a “Pretty in tired of thinking, “One day I’ll...” and then another year flashes Pink” fan, no, it isn’t side effects from skipping the prom. For by and I have the very same unfulfilled desire. I want to do it me, at least, it’s writing. Putting in the time, being in the mindset. now, not when I discover how to spontaneously conjure the And now I can tell when I haven’t been writing enough — when elusive “more time” out of thin air, or once my kids all go off to I’ve allowed less important things to fill up my days— because I college. (Imagine my plummeting chances if one of them hangs become irritable and dissatisfied: my bitter (or bitchy, depending around til—gasp!—age 30.) It’s time to take control of my life, on who you ask) self. I’ve learned to schedule writing time on my as both Chaka Khan and Bridget Jones have been known to calendar as if it were a meeting. Becoming a Farmer Barbara Felton
I
down our driveway in pickup trucks: the big red one, the smaller silver one, the black one, but, for years, I let myself get their names mixed up: Joe, Dave, Dan, Warner—and experienced them all as a masculine mush of denim and weathered faces. Years had passed—decades, actually—and somewhere beyond my awareness, I’d changed. Early on I’d fallen a bit in love with the cow who lifted her head, clearly recognizing me when I walked into the pasture, and moved toward me so I could scratch her face. A bit later I’d gasped with an adrenaline-laced thrill as I steered the tractor over windrows of hay far below me. Bit by bit I’d succumbed to the little joys and quiet pleasures of farm work, and now here was John (I knew his name as well as his face and his blue Chevy pickup)—out on the road beside his errant cow. So I climbed out of the car, the thin soles of my city shoes outlining the bumps on the asphalt surface. I faced the cow and stretched my arms wide to herd her. She turned from me and moved forward as John flanked her at her shoulder. There’s no such thing as an optional farmer, I realized. My effort to be one, in the end, had been like being a little bit pregnant. So there I was, a fellow farmer to John, if not yet to myself, walking a cow down the road. I calculated that the cow manure had so far only gotten onto the soles of my shoes and would come off readily with the paper towels I stored in the car. The cow was obliging, willing to go home it seemed, so John jogged ahead of her to make sure the gate was open and I walked her in. I got a big smile from John and I smiled back. “That was easy,” I said to him.
t was a hot summer day when I realized I had turned into a farmer. I was leaving the farm, heading off to the city for my monthly lunch with friends, dressed in suitable city clothes. Twenty yards from the driveway’s end, a cow was standing in the middle of the road. “That is not my cow,” I said to myself with relief. “I don’t have to get her back into a pasture.” My city person balked at the prospect of taking responsibility for this cow and I paused, stubbornly, hands on steering wheel, feeling my skirt ruffling slightly in the car’s airconditioning. The cow looked ridiculous, poised on the mounded black tar surface. She seemed baffled, turning toward me as if asking me to explain the lack of grass on the road. It was idiotically wrong for her to be there and so my arm reached for my phone to call our neighbor John, who I presumed owned the cow. I studied her ear tag, confirming that she really wasn’t one of ours. I was a city person, John didn’t answer because, as I for crying out loud, and I chose discovered, he was already driving my farm tasks selectively, over the hill in his pickup, searching for preferring those requiring his missing animal. “Hey, Barbara,” he camera or computer.” said as he pulled to the side of the road beside me and his cow, “can you give me a hand?” Giving a hand is what farmers do for other farmers. For years, I’d watched my husband put down his work, climb into his truck I’d held myself apart and drive off saying, “I’ll be over at George’s,” or from farm work at the outset. “Bob needs a hand,” or nothing at all. He never complained I wasn’t lazy, but the farm was at being asked—was he asked?—to show up at the site of some my husband’s idea. He was the one farm mishap or breakdown. who, in midlife, had left his For years—the first 20 or so after we’d bought the farm in city career and taken on this 1985—I’d resented his loyalty to a group of farmer-neighbors crazy lifestyle.” I didn’t know or appreciate. He was wedded to me but often, late at night or early Sunday morning, he was committed to men who calmly stepped forward when someone’s hay wagon broke, his supply of baling twine ran out, or his chainsaw failed. I’d held myself apart from farm work at the outset. I wasn’t lazy, but the farm was my husband’s idea. He was the one who, in midlife, had left his city career and taken on this crazy lifestyle. (Where is the “style” in the farming lifestyle? I’d once asked myself snobbishly.) He took on its responsibility After careers in academia (Psychology Department, NYU) and mental solo, never seeming to resent my commitments to events and health service administration, Barbara Felton became a farmer, raising obligations that kept me from working alongside of him. And cattle and pigs with her husband in Warwick, New York. She has scholarly so I cherished my separateness; I was a city person, for crying publications in academic journals and personal essays published in Psychiout loud, and I chose my farm tasks selectively, preferring those requiring camera or computer. I smiled to the men who drove atric Services and Dirt magazine.

GOT NIGHT MILK? A glass of milk at bedtime has long been touted as a sleep aid, but a recent study finds that milk collected at night, or “night milk,” had enhanced sedative effects in mice compared with milk produced during the day. It has only been tested on mice so far, but we like the possibility of an insomnia-fighter that comes from Mother Nature instead of Big Pharma.

Imagining a better world out there starts by imagining a better one in here. Children’s minds can take them anywhere. And while they imagine a world of dinosaurs and spaceships, no child imagines themselves in a hospital. Which is why we’re building one like no other in the world. With specially trained caregivers, medicine and technology, we’ll protect the world they imagine. Imagine What’s Possible
