MARCH

CHARLESTON, SC

ESCAPE THE ORDINARY

Happiness should be easy, like gliding on a calm sea with the wind gently blowing through our hair, sweet perfumed air that smells like salt spray and bonfires, and the feeling of not wanting for any darn thing. But if you’re over the age of five, you know just how elusive happiness can be. Sometimes we have to work at it, and sometimes we don’t quite get there. But oh, when we do, look out. The endorphins kick in, in the middle of a run, in the middle of the night, in the middle of a long workday, and we are unstoppable. Problems? We’ll solve them. Need love? Come right over here and let us give you a hug. Feeling blue? Let us give enough of ours away so your blues turn to sunshine. We inherently know what makes us happy; we just have a tendency to forget. Sunshine (vitamin D is our jam). Blue skies, sunsets, even rainy days have their charm. Seeing ourselves through the eyes of the ones we love the most. Nailing that full lotus pose in yoga class. Singing in the car at the top of our lungs to our favorite playlist in the middle of a traffic jam that we barely notice. It’s like this: One day the world is bleak and bare, the next it’s exploding with blooms in full color HD, and it amazes us, leaves us breathless, reminds us that happiness is within reach whenever we need it. Every. Single. Time.

“It is astonishing how short a time it takes for very wonderful things to happen.” Frances Hodgson Burnett

OH HAPPY ME

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”

oh happy bicyclist These tips from My City Bikes Charleston are just a sample of what you can get from its app. Available for iOS and Android, the app is like an interactive pocket guide that encourages you to hop on a bike and ride for fitness, transportation or just plain fun! Make biking a part of your lifestyle to improve your overall health, the health of the community and the environment. mycitybikes.org/south-carolina.

Don’t Leave Without Inflating Your Tires. Under-inflated tires are the #1 reason that you’re getting flats! When a bike tire isn’t pumped up enough the metal rim can press down on the rubber, causing a hole in the tire. Don’t Ride Without a Helmet. Use your head. Helmet use has been estimated to reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent. Repeat the following mantra and rock your helmet with pride: Helmet hair is sexy! Don’t Blend In. Wear your best neon and add on every reflective accessory you’ve got. Visibility is the name of the game when it comes to bike safety. Wear bright, highly visible colors and make sure to have lights on the front and back of your bicycle. Don’t Leave Your ID at Home. Always carry a photo ID, a charged cell phone, and cash or a credit card in case of emergencies. Keep the items in a small pouch or plastic bag inside of a zipped pocket or a seat bag. If you have a medical condition, consider a Road ID bracelet in case of emergencies.

“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy a bicycle and that’s pretty close.” Anonymous

Don’t Forget the Water. Always bring at least one bottle of fresh water with you on a ride. Take a sip every 15 minutes or so while you’re riding and make sure you eat a small snack before a longer ride to prevent the dreaded “bonk.”

LACEY JOHNSON Lacey Johnson is a writer residing in Nashville and founder of TheDailyDoll. com, a beauty, wellness and self-development website. Her writing style is a blend of self-help humor, liberation, entertainment and heartfelt celebration.

GIVING SADNESS THE AX He was like the old friend we know all too well...

Sadness and I had become as thick as thieves over the years. He was like the old friend who makes an appearance whenever the mood strikes him; leaning coolly against the door with the expectation of being ushered inside. I’d often cultivate a comfortable distance between us, but he’d eventually make an entrance through the ever-growing vines. He knew my darkest secrets, my most tormenting disappointments and my most vulnerable triggers. He knew me so well, he could find me in any corner of the world; a hotel room in Hong Kong, a boardwalk in San Francisco, a New Year’s Eve party in between champagne sips, and the all-too-familiar late night in my bed staring at the ceiling. Through every break-up, Sadness would sneak up behind me, whispering, “As soon as he closes the door, we’re going to go cry in a corner together.” He was occasionally there for the joyous times, too, refusing to completely silence his voice among the cheering. I’d bargain with him, saying, “Okay, look. I won’t kick you out in the cold, but you aren’t allowed to raise your voice above a reasonable volume, alright? Dial it down to a whisper. I’m going to enjoy myself tonight.” He was present every time I shared my writing with someone who didn’t respond according to my expectations, graciously reminding me of my every artistic and linguistic shortcoming. He even loomed over the table at my college graduation dinner, reminding me of how painstakingly misunderstood I was doomed to forever be. Yet, he was brilliant at convincing me that he was only present for my protection; only there because he understood. Indeed, he was like the old friend we know all too well; the one whose presence is a token of that which is most familiar, yet at the end of the day, he has never done you any actual favors. Not a solitary one. I’m not sure when we first made our acquaintance, but I know this relationship has deep roots in my childhood. I was born into a close-knit, loving family, but when tragedy struck, there was no easy way to convince an imaginative six year-old that she had not been abandoned on purpose. Sadness stood by my side when they lowered my mother into the ground. Sadness was like a devil on my shoulder when all of the children in my first-grade class stared at me as the teacher silenced their curious whispers. Sadness even insisted upon playing small roles in celebrations: The step-mother whose beauty and grace I idolized, the lead role in the third-grade play as the Queen of Hearts, the new baby brother cooing and blowing bubbles delicately, and even the milestone when puberty had, alas, granted me a period. He was always lurking around the corner and whistling at a safe distance, assuring me that I would never be abandoned again. He once lifted me onto his shoulders and carried me through the dark valley of my first heartbreak at the age of 19, making his presence known by the lump in my throat and crushing weight upon my chest.

34

Sadness was always in competition with my dear friend Happiness. He was occasionally willing to rest quietly in the back seat during the majority of our ventures, but would eventually grow restless. Without warning, he’d emerge; demanding to put his two cents into the conversation again. Sometimes he dared to steamroll his way into every breathable space until Happiness grew too claustrophobic for comfort and announced, with hands in the air and total surrender, “I’ll see ya later, Lacey. Maybe we can try again for tomorrow night.” Time marched on and, soon enough, I was grown-up and swallowing the unpleasant reality that I’d permitted Sadness to navigate for so long, I wasn’t confident in my ability to drive on my own. He’d been given reign over the keys, the playlists and the climate control. He had even wormed his way into being in charge of the snacks. He was a lousy chauffeur, too. He’d never protected me from any bumps in the road and rarely allowed me to roll the windows down in order to breathe in fresh air. I had missed a myriad of heart-stopping sunsets because of his insistence that we keep the shades drawn, and he had always chosen the dark tunnels over the open roads. He was also sort of like the “old faithful” employee, long on the payroll, who was an absolute moron yet had convinced the majority of the staff that he was CEO. Observers had long scratched their heads in bewilderment as to why such an idiot was permitted to run the show. On one particularly disheartening day, I awoke with the realization that I was on the verge of declaring emotional and spiritual bankruptcy. No one worthwhile wanted to conduct business with someone who could not see the value in their own product. So, I fired his ass. I opened the shades and scrubbed the gunk from the windows. I took inventory and reexamined my stock. I counted my money and reestablished the payroll. I created new terms and rewrote the manual. I interviewed new prospects and invited new customers in. I could finally see all of the things there were to delight in— fields of wildflowers, the feel of fresh blades of grass against your skin, the smell of the ocean, the whites of a puppy’s eyes when it peers at you from the side, a spring drive through the country, the sunlight peaking through the lush summer trees, a slushy on a steamy August afternoon, the first pumpkin sighting in the early fall and watching “Home Alone” on repeat every Christmas season, only to laugh harder than you did the previous time. I wonder: With so much in life to love, why is it that Sadness has so many jobs? It is true that life presents us with wonderful things if only we will draw back the shades, yet I suppose there is no more authentic way to appreciate each of them fully without having first experienced some level of their shadowed opposite. So, if you have a friend named Sadness, thank him. Thank him for every dark tunnel he has driven you through.

dear happy

Hour I am so HAPPY it is HAPPY hour.

Dear HAPPY Hour, We’ve had a love-hate relationship with you lately...take last Thursday. Hard day, long week = office Happy Hour. But when we arrive to our much anticipated watering hole, only eight barstools were eligible for the Happy Hour prices and there were already five people there. You do the math. What is with this new trend? Designated seating for Happy Hour in the bar? We’re not sure why the notion of equality hasn’t caught up with Happy Hour. Why is the beer $2 off and the wine just 50 cents? Men already make more money on the dollar than women; shouldn’t that disparity be reflected in Happy Hour pricing? And please don’t suggest we start drinking beer —unless the notoriously frank and uncensored British lady, Helen Mirren, is sitting next to us (in that case, just bring us a Budweiser).

We do adore the really special cocktails, the ones we would order even if they weren’t at Happy Hour prices (but, oh joy, when they are!). Like the $4 Blood Orange Margarita at Muse, the Middleton Mule at Rutledge Cab Co, or the Dessert Martinis at Kaminisky’s. They just make us really happy. Or high on sugar. Is there a difference?

And a slightly touchier subject: bar food. Specifically fried bar food. We must move on and evolve. Let’s all take a lesson from the half off sushi rolls at Oku, the $1.50 oysters at Pearlz and the salmon tacos at Graze. We will make fried food exceptions, but they have to BE exceptional: the $2 basket of duck fries at the Tattooed Moose, the bacon tater tots at Stars and the half price fried green tomatoes at Salt at Station 22. We have to live a little...

We especially love it when you can see us coming, when the bartender reaches for top shelf brands because they remember how much we love good vodka, or when you bring amuse bouche to the table just to say “we like you.” We like you too.

A special-shout out goes to the Happy Hours that offer Champagne. Thank you, Liberty Tap Room, Pearlz, the Harbor Club, and Fish. It is after all, gluten free, dairy free and fat free. Goes right along with our Paleo diet...or are we still on the South Beach diet? Regardless, we feel super fancy with a flute glass full of bubbly.

One last question: Will you kindly update us about Last Call? It doesn’t seem fair to just say, “whoops, Happy Hour already ended.” Buzzkill... Lets us focus on JOY.

Is it five o’clock yet?

Now, McKenzie is working to make a new creative space, while mostly focusing on her own music, singing and songwriting with The Very Hypnotic Soul Band. Look for their debut show at The Royal American on April 21, as well as an upcoming EP release. “The sound is very R&B/soul driven,” said McKenzie, describing a recent gig they played at Charleston Music Hall with other groups following the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church shootings. “We really wanted to speak about what had happened and make it be a memorial to those people.”

They shared a rendition of the song, “Carolina in My Mind,” which flowed into hip-hop verses to share what Carolina means from different perspectives. “We’re trying to also show musical diversity,” says McKenzie, whose band includes keyboardist Elliott Smith, hip-hop artist Benjamin Starr, drummer Quentin Ravenel and guitarist Jimmy Choate. “Moving here, I was inspired by the fact that there are so many people willing to collaborate and inspire one another,” McKenzie said. Her sense of artistic joy comes from the collective experience shared by performers and audience members. “Universal human connection is really important, feeling collective happiness is important. And I think that’s something that music can do in a way that

nothing else can do.”

5 Real Estate Tips

for 2016

Sellers - Do sweat the small stuff - little touches go a long way. Trim the bushes, change out trampled welcome mats, put fresh towels out.... Buyers - when touring several homes at a time, they tend to all blend together. Create a check list of pros-and-cons and complete for each home you visit. Sellers- Price it right! Don’t get caught up in pricing games. Activity in the first month of the listing is always the best, so don’t risk wasting that opportunity. Buyers - Refrain from making any big purchases or opening new lines of credit until after you close on a home. Doing so raises your debt to income ratio which can effect your purchase power. Buyers and Sellers - Arm yourself with data. Get your agent to drill down in the numbers.

The Dartmouth and NYU School of Law grad says that she chose law school “because I’d seen my own family and friends affected by their inability to hire a lawyer when they needed one, and my experience practicing in recent years confirmed that there are far too many people unrepresented in court because they can’t afford legal services.” “I love standing up for people. Krissa Watry makes kids (and parents) happy.

When Krissa switched jobs, she leapt from outer space to cyberspace. She left her engineering career at Andrews Space Inc., where she was Director of Programs, to build her own business. “Space was a bigger impact on humankind and I wanted to be able to change people’s lives here on earth,” she said. With a co-founder who has experience in early childhood education, Krissa started Dynepic to create a platform that allows kids to safely connect in the digital world: the Internet of Toys. The company launches its first service this year, iOKids, which will act as a social gateway. Kids and parents will make a login through the app that is parent-managed, so kids can securely access

their favorite online toys and games. “Technology made me who I am today,” says Krissa. “Our kids deserve the same but we have to give it to them in a safe playground.” Parents get to view the privacy policy for toys, to understand what that toy requires of their kids, from photos to contact information. Parents can monitor the release of that information and create a friends list that is approved by both sides—friends’ parents and the child’s parents. “I think it makes everybody happy all the way around,” Watry said. Parents get transparency and kids get the games. Ultimately, she said, “The world is getting smarter and what we’re trying to do is stay ahead.”

JEANETTE BOUCHIE

Jeanette Bouchie is a Lifelong Learning Librarian, and takes her job title seriously. She is fascinated by everyone and everything she encounters, and has been writing from the time she was old enough to re-imagine the stories of her favorite movie characters.

I L OV E B E I N G A G I R L I a m u n a p o l o g e t i c a l l y, w h o l e h e a r t e d l y g i r l y. I love being a girl. I adore everything about it—dressing up, reading romance novels and wearing faux-diamonds on any special occasion in which doing so can be justified, and often when it can’t. My favorite color is pink and I’ve watched every single Disney-princess movie at least twice. I’m an intelligent, 42-year-old professional woman who has an entire closet of gowns so I can attend a masquerade ball should a last-minute invitation find its way to my mailbox. I am unapologetically, wholeheartedly girly. It took a good deal of courage to come out with this declaration. Sadly, I’ve discovered that many people don’t appreciate my affection for the ultra-feminine. In fact, I’ve been subjected to a fair amount of ridicule, and even disgust, for my preferences. For some reason, it has become shameful to wear dresses every day or to fangirl “Once Upon a Time.” (There are millions of us who do both, by the way.) I used to hide my Harlequin novels and pretend I didn’t have National Tiara Day marked on my calendar. Not anymore. I have finally embraced who I am and what I want—which is a castle, but I’ll settle for a beautiful shade of red lipstick and a pair of Louboutins. I have encountered women who view me as a traitor to the feminist cause, as if my collection of Barbie catalogs has set back the women’s movement hundreds of years. I’m actually a staunch feminist who sees no reason why I can’t do almost anything a man can do and, in some instances, do it better. I support equal rights and don’t feel I need a significant other to have a fulfilling life. I, too, want to make the world a better place for all, I just want to do so in a twirly skirt and patent-leather pumps. One of my favorite quotes is by author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi, who writes, “At some point, I was a Happy African Feminist Who Does Not Hate Men And Who Likes Lip Gloss And Who Wears High Heels For Herself And Not For Men.” Pleasing the opposite sex has nothing to do with my choices. It’s all about pleasing myself. More generous souls have informed me that as a child I was brainwashed into believing this is how women should act in order to find husbands. Not true. My independence

58

was always encouraged by both my parents. There was never any doubt that I would go to college, get a job and take care of myself. Much to my mother’s chagrin, however, I was demanding fairy wings and sausage curls at the age of four. This desire had nothing to do with finding a mate and everything to do with my longing to be just like Tinker Bell— who is pretty awesome, I might add. Despite the misunderstandings, and the occasional eye roll, I get a great deal of pleasure out of reveling in my girly-ness. I’m charmed by small, fluffy kittens; so I visit Pinterest and YouTube when I need a boost to get me through a long day. It makes me happy to see the way light sparkles on sequins, so I wear them whenever I can. I get goosebumps when I see a leading man finally sweep his beloved into his arms and give her a long, slow kiss; so I watch romantic movies as often as possible. I consider myself blessed to have so many simple things in life that bring me joy. I must confess, I relish the attention my style and attitude garner. It makes me feel like a shot of color in a crowd that is all too often painted in shades of beige and taupe. People remember me and, when they get to know me, usually like me. There’s much, much more to me than fancy crinolines and canopy beds, but they’re a part of who I am and if that makes people take notice, I have no problem with that. In time, they’ll come to appreciate my razor-sharp wit and killer sense of humor. In the meantime, they secretly lust after my set of Hello Kitty stationery. Fortunately, my friends get me. They may cringe when they see the porcelain dolls on my shelves, but they don’t criticize. In fact, they encourage me to be true to myself, just as I encourage them. Another favorite quote of mine is by author Alan Cohen. He writes, “You cannot judge what should bring others joy, and others should not judge what brings you joy.” None of us should be embarrassed by who we are or what we love, be it dance lessons, horror movies or the WWE. If you love it, own it. It’s our quirks and passions that make us special. Say it loud, say it proud: I love being a girl!

Dating Chronicles from a Matchmaker Dating Chronicle #1 “…You’ll always be single!” Yes, it is true. You will always be single if you are not truly compatible with your partner. You can be in a marriage/relationship for all the wrong reasons and feel (in a sense) like you’re single. Your lives are going in two separate directions, communication is minimal at best and you don’t even make the time to know what is happening with the person in your life. Unfortunately, you don’t really care anymore. Work, household projects, children; almost anything takes and keeps your attention. You feel it but don’t talk about it, you’re not happy and you see your life being a routine of nothing…

Dating Chronicle # 2 “Men just want one thing…” What a man wants is to know that you appreciate him. They want to know you are maybe (even still) a little impressed with them. He wants to know you feel he would take on the fight with a grizzly bear to defend you. He wants you to be proud he is the guy you chose and because you are the girl that still does the little things to attract his attention. Wearing something you know will make him proud you are the woman he chose… and no, ladies, it is not giving up your strength as a woman. It is part of understanding you both want the same thing… each other! But seriously… What we all want, both men and women, is to be cherished and loved. It isn’t easy; too many distractions in life make us believe this is just the way it is suppose to be, but it doesn’t have to be. Take a moment to remember (date nights are great for this). Set relationship priorities (laundry can wait). Touch is what makes us human (when was the last time you held hands?). Try asking him or her out on a date, plan a surprise for no reason; keep it interesting! Ask, don’t tell. Find out what your partner wants from your relationship. Do you know? These are just a few areas that can really change how you treat your relationship. Imagining a better world out there starts by imagining a better one in here. Children’s minds can take them anywhere. And while they imagine a world of dinosaurs and spaceships, no child imagines themselves in a hospital. Which is why we’re building one like no other in the world. With specially trained caregivers, medicine and technology, we’ll protect the world they imagine. Imagine What’s Possible
