ESCAPE THE ORDINARY

Whether you’re 15 or 50, we’ve all wanted to do it. Run away, escape our everyday, live someone else’s life for a while. Why do you long for escape? Boredom, the sameold, same-old everyday, a need to take a break from your daily reality for just a little while. And some of us do it, at 15 or 50, for a little or a long while, and sometimes we become better people for having done so. We daydream about the lives we could have lived or could be living right now, we imagine the surprises a new place or a new life could bring. This longing for something different, new, better, strange...thankfully can be fed by travel away from home for just a little while instead of burning all the bridges and starting a new life over somewhere else. Sometimes, all we need is a different view, a new perspective, new faces and places and experiences. It’s so easy to buy a ticket, hop on a plane, and feed your inner runaway in a matter of hours. Being away from the things we take for granted—like family, friends, your lovely neighborhood, or your comfy bed— makes us appreciate them even more.Travel makes you a better person, says Science, and we’re in on it. You can step outside of your comfort zone, learn new things, new cultures, new languages, and all of the above makes our brains more active, which increases our level of happiness better than any prescription from your family doc.Away from home, we get the breathing space that we often lose in our day-to-day doldrums. We don’t have to check our social channels and email, and we can take pictures that we don’t post to Instagram because this is our experience. We can share later. We have the freedom to enjoy being in the moment, being truly present, and that is the gift our little runaway is really looking for.And at the end of our travels, nothing feels better than coming back home. Dear Matchmaker I have found myself reading your blog and, unfortunately, relating to much of it. I have been single for over 6 years and in that time I have joined and deleted more dating profiles from so many different sites that I can no longer keep track of which one’s I have tried and which one’s I have not. The biggest issue that I run into is that those that are on many of these sites, say that they want a serious commitment, and are tired of the dating games, but in the end it seems that all they do is play games. I have had ladies start chatting and then when it comes to meeting, they always back out or just kind of disappear. I am a stable, professional man, I take care of my health and am just looking for someone that wants the same things in this life. What am I doing wrong? Sincerely, Dan B. – Charleston,SC Hi Dan, Thank you for your letter. I want to start out with stating that there is NOTHING wrong with you, and you are not alone with your concerns and frustrations. Online dating is a wonderful and Horrible beast all in its own. For starters, there are THOUSANDS of “singles” online, so if you are looking for a tool to just scroll through pictures and chat, well then this is ideal. The problem with online dating is that it also gives everyone the ability to create whatever persona that they can imagine. I have always told the members that I work with that if they are going to try online dating to keep a few things in mind.. Anyone with access to the internet can join an online dating service and for a few of these sites, they do not even need a debit or credit card to do so. This means that you literally have NO idea where these “people” are actually filling out their information from. Professional Matchmakers are one on one and get to know exactly who you are. Which would you prefer someone that listens or just another blurb on another site?

South Carolina Matchmakers is a highly selective Matchmaking service right here in Charleston. Why not take just a moment and contact them today at 843-310-0201 or southcarolinamatchmakers.com 147218-XX-5.indd 1 CHSSK_160500_0012-00021.indd 14

You’re Sassy & Smart, Ladies, you get everyone else organized and make sure nothing falls through the cracks. But, what about you? If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else. One simple thing you can do is know your heart health numbers. Early detection and prevention are the keys to a healthy heart. Having a healthy heart means knowing your numbers: Total Cholesterol

<200 mg/dL

Blood Pressure

<120/80 mmHg

LDL “Bad” Cholesterol

<100 mg/dL

Fasting Glucose

<100 mg/dL

HDL “Good” Cholesterol

50 mg/dL or higher

Body Mass Index (BMI)

<25

Triglycerides

<150 mg/dL

Waist Circumference

<35 inches

Now, if you have no idea what some of these numbers mean—don’t worry! Simply call (843) 402-CARE for a doctor referral.

I travel to become a new person, a better person. I travel because every time I leave, I come back holding more knowledge than I did before. Traveling allows me to get outside of my head and immerse myself entirely in new cultures, experiences, and personas. It is, most simply, a way to escape from ourselves—our lives and our sufferances, our desires and our routines. I have been fortunate to have had opportunities to capitalize on my passion for travel, getting to explore places such as the oceans of the Mediterranean or the cliffs of the Irish coast. This past summer, I travelled to Peru to hike the Salkantay trail to Machu Picchu. In the fall, I will be moving to Italy for my freshman year of college. Every time I print out a new boarding pass and sit down in another sticky airplane seat, I am filled with excitement and joy for a new experience. I am filled with the desire to escape from the ordinary and live in a world of wonder and thrill. To me, escape through travel is a beautiful thing. It allows us to grow, learn, and understand more—both about ourselves and others—than we might have been able to before. Breaking free from the routines and lives we may have otherwise grown stuck in is one of the most important parts of life. If we do not travel, we run the risk of becoming stuck in the everyday rather than the extraordinary. And it is my utmost belief that we should always seek out the extraordinary in life, even if we do not get on a plane to do it. So I urge you to go.Travel. Learn. Grow. Seek the extraordinary. Because adventure is everywhere- we just have to know how to look for it.

Rob Powell escapes through dance.

Rob first tried Zumba with coworkers on a military base in Germany. He had been an officer in the Marines for eight years and was skeptical. “It’s something men don’t traditionally do…I didn’t see anyone like me in that class,” he said. But it was one of the best cardio workouts he had ever had. Group fitness had been part of his culture in the Marines, and after he became a civilian and was trying to shed weight, he found that he didn’t enjoy gym workouts. “At some point I said, ‘This is enough, I’m not sexy anymore, I need to go and fix this.’” Why Zumba was the solution: “The beauty behind Zumba is that it’s exercise in disguise.” Now, in addition to working for the government in Charleston, Rob is getting

others to experience the power of Zumba. He owns and teaches classes at Power Zone at Riverside Sports in Mount Pleasant, offering that community a fitness option beyond gym memberships. “Some people just want to dance,” said Rob, who describes his classes as intense but simple enough for beginners. He’s hosting a Zumbathon charity event June 25 for the public at Power Zone to benefit Active Heroes, which serves veterans with PTSD.Veterans and families of veterans from around the region will participate. “It’s a party,” he said. “While you’re in a class you’re just enjoying yourself…For that one hour you escape into Zumba where you’re just dancing and

enjoying the moment.”

At Island, we enjoy the colors of the landscape, the feel of natural fi bers against our skin, in shapes that fl atter and move with the sea breeze. We believe in escape and the ability to put all our belongings in a bag light enough to carry on our back. We believe in ease and leaving burdens behind. We live on the island.

A M A N DA D U M S C H

Amanda Dumsch works in education and training at a federal agency near Washington, DC. In her spare time, she writes, travels, and avoids all outdoor gear stores.

BABY STEPS “ Ye s . I j u s t n e e d e d t o g e t t o t h e S u n G a t e .” “Take a vacation from your problems,” Dr. Leo Marvin prescribed. While trying to escape a mundane 9-5 grind and late 20s existential crisis, my vacation turned into my problem. However, the advice of this fictional psychiatrist echoed in my head. The movie “What About Bob?” is a long-time family favorite. In it, Dr. Marvin treats an agoraphobic, obsessive-compulsive Bob by giving him a copy of his book, Baby Steps, where he is taught to break down all of his anxieties into smaller actions. Baby steps up the next 500 feet; baby steps to that rock, baby steps...This mantra echoed through my head as I hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Turns out this is actually a high altitude hiking technique: walk for fifteen counts and rest for five. Travel guides described the Inca Trail as a mystical journey. One TripAdvisor review read, “Passing through the Sun Gate and seeing that magical view of Machu Picchu was the most spiritual experience of my life.” Yes. I just needed to get to the Sun Gate. The path, though, was rugged and steep and included a section called “Dead Woman’s Pass.” This involved hiking uphill for five hours to an elevation of about 14,000 feet. Prior to my trip, I was advised to find preparatory hikes where there was an altitude change of at least 5,000 feet. I figured a pretty good equivalent could be found in my morning commute when I walked up the 188 foot metro escalator at Dupont Circle. My concerned friend, Laura, had hiked the trail a couple of years before and she encouraged me to get more serious about my training. “Honestly,” she said, “the hike feels like you are doing a stair master for eight hours a day.” What I lacked in physical preparedness though, I made up for in gear. As an indoorsy person, I had never been camping. Nervously conferring with REI sales associates, I spent hundreds of dollars acquiring it all—hydration packs to insert into a brand new backpack, a thermal sleeping bag, trekking poles, hiking socks, sock liners, water purification tablets, electrolyte gel packets, zip off hiking pants, a Diamox prescription for altitude sickness, and so on. Like the shopping list, our first day in Peru had been dutifully planned months in advance. It was devoted entirely to acclimating to the high altitude. But, in our very American way, we decided we should maximize our time in Peru by booking a bus tour of ancient ruins in Ollantaytambo. I spent all six hours in the back of the tour bus vomiting coca tea into a bag while my sister gently patted my head. My sister, brother-in-law, best friend and I had all been chugging this purported altitude sickness elixir since landing. Swallowing Diamox with coca tea worked for everybody, but me. My nagging headache became throbbing, so I stopped at a roadside Medico Centre where a Peruvian woman rubbed some type of herb between her hands and instructed me to sniff. If I hadn’t thought I was dying, I would have asked if this was some sort of a “smell my finger” joke. Instead, I inhaled deeply. This did nothing, so a man in a white coat handed me several very large chalky pills.

36

Without even asking if he was a doctor or what I was taking, I gratefully swallowed them and left. A few minutes later, while overlooking the beautiful “Sacred Valley of the Incas,” I offered up a sacrifice of my own, kneeling and returning the pills to the earth. Immediately, I went back and motioned that I needed more pills. I couldn’t help but think that my high school Spanish teacher would not have been proud. I made no attempt to use learned nouns and verbs. As it turns out there was no need. Puke and hand gestures are universal. Our tour guide, Edwin, picked us up from our hotel early the next morning, the day our hike officially began. He was petite in stature and serious in nature. He picked up my 40 pound backpack and I half-expected him to compliment my packing. “The size of your bag preoccupies me,” he said instead. Turning away, he muttered, “Muy grande…muy preocupado.” “What do you suggest I do?” I asked earnestly. “Not much to do now. Others usually hire somebody to carry all of their things,” he replied as we reached the base camp. Sure enough, I looked around and every other tourist had a small daypack on their back. On their feet were hiking boots much like—so padded and insulated, we could have stepped on a small child and not felt it. In stark juxtaposition, the porters were running around wearing the oldest, thinnest soled Birkenstocks you have ever seen while balancing burgeoning loads on their backs. While hiking, a porter would suddenly whiz by with a grown woman on his back, clearly rushing for urgent medical care. Could I feign an injury and have a porter carry me? The morning of our final hike started at 4 am. This was the moment I dreamed of when booking this trip. After two hours of hiking, I could sense that we were getting closer and the anticipation of the gate’s glory energized me. Finally reaching the Sun Gate, I walked through believing that first gaze would take my breath away. I saw nothing. Instead, I walked into a hazy white wall of dense fog. Crestfallen, we took off our backpacks and stared at the thick blanket of mist. “It’s usually fogged in at this hour,” Edwin said as he motioned for us to keep hiking. But, we didn’t budge; instead, we sat down. “Why the hell did he make us start hiking so early if it’s usually fogged in at this time?” my sister angrily whispered. After two hours of waiting and staring at fog, we put our heavy backpacks on again and started our final descent through hazy trails. Slowly, the fog lifted and revealed this lost Incan city to us. Like these ruins, my vision of this trip had crumbled. I had been searching for something transcendent, an experience bigger and better than my daily life back home. Somewhere among the ruins, we reconnected with Edwin. He smiled at me for the very first time and said, “Muy fuerte! You are stronger than I thought.” Nodding in agreement, my disappointment dissipated...just a baby step.

Katie Geer escapes into art.

Katie is the Director of newly opened contemporary fine art gallery, Meyer Vogl Gallery, featuring her mother’s artwork. “It had just been something my mom and I have always talked about—that we would open an art gallery together,” said Katie, who grew up in Charleston surrounded by her mother, Laurie Meyer’s original artwork and artist friends. “I grew up helping her out with her art in little ways,” she said, like setting up her mother’s artwork for Piccolo Spoleto displays in the summer in high school. After working as a writer/ editor for Everydayhealth.com in New York, she moved back to Charleston and did parttime work with Anglin Smith Fine Art. Here, she said, the possibility of her working in

the art world started to feel tangible. Now she is full-time with Meyer Vogl Gallery, which spotlights works by Meyer, Marissa Vogl and local and nationally recognized guest artists. Katie handles the gallery’s marketing, social media and coordination of shows, like the upcoming “She” exhibit featuring female figurative works. This category happens to be her favorite when it comes to her mother’s creations. “Her use of light is really incredible,” Katie said. For now, the gallery space is set up with a cozy, living-room-like seating area, so, she said, “You can look out and imagine that the artwork is in your own home.” You can also sip wine while you make your selection. “I love sending a beautiful painting home with someone.”

ELA CARPENTER

Ela Carpenter is a teacher and freelance writer. Originally from London, she currently lives in Boston with her husband and daughter.

W H AT M AT T E R S I S N ’ T W H E R E W E W E N T, B U T T H AT W E W E N T AT A L L “What would a life living here be like?”

I didn’t want to go. I did, but I didn’t. I wanted to be the kind of person who would go, without actually having to be the person who went. Ever since we found out my husband got a two year teaching job in Boston, the plan had been to spend our one long summer vacation in the states driving out west. We would buy a VW Eurovan, with the back seat that folds down into a bed, and hit the road for the adventure of a lifetime – my husband, myself and our three-month-old baby. When I was pregnant and the plan was still in the future, it seemed like a good idea. But once our daughter was born and spring started to warm into summer, I grew more and more afraid. What if something happened? I was a new mother; what was I thinking leaving behind the safety of our apartment, our nascent routines, our pediatrician? Some worries like this I could name, but some I could not; insidious, they were just there, a constant background noise to our preparations. The only thing that outweighed these fears was the fear that fear might win, and in so doing would show that it always got the better of me. I did not want to be that person, I did not want to be that mother to my daughter. It was this that got me through the packing, the final preparations and into the van. As we pulled out from the curb and left Boston behind, I felt the giddy rush of victory. I left the state of constant anxiety about what could be and entered one where things simply became. We were on the road. I liked who I was behind the wheel; I liked who we were as a family. Forever heading west, needing only what we brought with us, we were adventurers, young and alive. As our wheels turned over the tarmac the whole landscape seemed to hum with possibility. What next? We learned how to camp in the van, how to unpack, pull out the bed and make our home for the night. We bathed our daughter outside as the light faded, before tucking her into bed and eating our dinner, pasta and sauce cooked on a small gas stove. There was something about being outside as the night drew in, feeling it on your skin, that made the food taste better and the day behind you feel more your own. For lunch we stopped at cafes and diners, sometimes just where we found

48

them, other times seeking them out in the towns we came across. Dots on the map became real places and we walked the streets and asked ourselves, “What would a life living here be like?” The days built a rhythm. We’d get up and fold the bed away as quickly as possible so we could get a good number of hours driving in whilst our baby slept. She dozed, oblivious, through fields of bison, down winding mountain roads surrounded by forest. She stayed in her own dreams as our little white van passed through dreamlike landscapes, scars—wrought by volcanic violence thousands of years before we arrived—etched across the earth. I took photographs, trying to get her in the frame. “See—you were there!” I will tell her one day, pointing to the brilliant blue of Crater Lake, or the looming grandeur of the Grand Tetons just visible through the window beyond her car seat. Sometimes she cried and we would pull over so that I could feed her. In that blessed quiet we would stare out at the place where no one plans a stop and notice the details we would otherwise have sped past. The bullet-hole in the information sign, the dilapidated house in the field of corn, the crickets feasting on the corpse of a beetle on the tarmac. How much did we pass by without seeing? There was so much country, so much road. Eventually we reached the Pacific, then turned around and made our way back. In the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota, camp fatigue set in and the romance came to an end. There was nothing dramatic, it was just time. It had been over a month, we had done what we set out to do; we had driven as far west as we could and now on the homeward stretch we were done. With the decision made, Interstates carried us home in a matter of days. Back in Boston, each day felt like a jump from a standing start, with no inherent momentum to drive it forward. I put together a photo book of the trip for our daughter to show her when she is older. I imagine her looking at it, flicking through the pages, seeing where we went, what we did. But what I most want her to see as she takes the book down from the shelf, years from now, is that no matter who we become, no matter what kind of parents we turn out to be, we were once these people— adventurers, young and alive.

Escape Injustice

As the Summer Olympics approach, it’s unclear if the U.S.’s World Cup-winning women’s soccer team will compete.

Not only are several team members suing for equal pay, but the players say an Olympic boycott is very much a possibility if nothing is being done about the problem. Despite the fact that the Women’s National Team has won three World Cups and four Olympic Gold medals in the past three decades, they are paid only 40 percent of what the men’s team makes—even though the men’s team hasn’t won a World Cup since the 1930s. Our take? There’s more than one way to kick some ass. AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE IN AUGUST OF 2016.

Jessica Koenig escapes on the water. Jessica’s childhood was filled with weekend sailboat getaways on the Chesapeake Bay with her family and she attended a summer sailing program before her teenage years. “I just loved being out on the water and found it so relaxing and calming and it gave me the confidence to do things in other aspects of my life,” Jessica said. She sailed competitively in college and went to teach the sport in Charleston, where she has been Executive Director of Charleston Community Sailing for a decade. On the water or at her desk, Jessica is working to grow the nonprofit’s vision to give access to anyone with a desire to sail, regardless of background. In particular, she said, “I enjoy working with children and sharing

this experience with them —these are lifelong skills.” In her time at the organization, Jessica has seen the amount of people they serve on the water grow from 150 to 700, and the number of boats in use has tripled to about 45. Another number that has the potential to rise is the number of women starting to sail, thanks to the nonprofit’s program called Women on the Water. Jessica said she wants “to help empower other females to get out on the water in a supportive element.” And as a woman on the water herself, Jessica keeps her competitive edge beyond work by racing with her sailing team, Monsoon. She said, “I love working with a team and developing that bond with them and working toward a

common goal.”

Joan Leotta is a writer and story performer and lives in Calabash, NC. Her next picture book is “Summer in a Bowl” and will be released in September. You can find out more about Joan at joanleotta.wordpress.com.

S E E I N G C L E A R LY I N F O G “ W e w e r e a l o n e o n t h a t s i d e r o a d . A v e r y d a r k r o a d .” It was October, 1976. My mother had flown from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. to help me drive from Washington D.C. to Dallas, Texas, where I would take on a two-month work assignment. “Driving such a distance, you need someone with you,” Mom told me, unannounced, uninvited at my apartment, three days before I was to leave. The drive did seem shorter with someone along. She did not try to “boss me.” She read the maps and pulled snacks out of the back seat for me while I drove. It was also nice not to be alone in the cheap budget motel I had booked. On the second day, we briefly stopped in Hot Springs, Arkansas on our slow drive to Dallas, because for many years my grandparents had spent every February there. The “Springs” were in decline at the time so, after a late lunch and exploring a bit, we opted to push on despite the fact that our five-in-theafternoon start meant a nighttime arrival in Dallas. The map said it was just over four hours away. That estimate, however, did not account for a detour and hellish weather. Somewhere just outside the boundaries of the town of the healing waters, just past the turn off for the detour, the sky went dark. Rain poured down as wind bullied trees into bending low, for a terrifying thirty minutes or so. However, there was not much traffic so we pushed on. When the rain stopped, we were alone on that side road. A very dark road. I peered out my window looking for roadside signs to tell us exactly how far from the state border, how far from Dallas, how far from anything we were. Nothing. My mother insisted we trade driving duties. We stopped on the shoulder. A heavy fog rolled in as we shifted seats. The road, the entire area; zero visibility. Two women alone on a dark road in heavy fog at night. My mother seemed to sense my fear. “We should keep going. Eventually we will get back to the highway.” “But we can’t even see the road,” I whined. “I’ll drive slowly. You open your door to watch for the white line so we won’t go off in a ditch.” Her idea made a lot of sense. We crawled ahead for what seemed like hours. However, according to the clock on the Volare’s dashboard only 20 minutes had passed. Suddenly I spotted something gleaming ahead of us—glaring through the fog. Mom headed toward the unknown object. As we drew closer, we realized it was a single light bulb on a pole in the packed parking lot of a roadside restaurant. We found a spot for the car. My sky blue, two-door Volare soon rested between a pair of massive red pickup trucks. Savory smells of home cooking drifted out of the largish wooden shack to remind us we felt hungry. It was nine in the evening. We pushed open the door and discovered a universe of blaring country music and food. Dozens of folks with Stetsons and

58

cowboy boots stood in line passing by pans of collards, fluffy white mashed potatoes and that fried stuff. A register anchored the line. My mom smiled at everyone. We joined the food line. “What’s that?” I wrinkled my nose and pointed toward the fried dish. The counter man snickered as he drawled out his reply. “Catfish, right from our river. Want some?” Before I could answer, my mother chimed in, “Oh, catfish!” She picked up the serving tongs, placed two pieces on my plate and two on her own. The man seemed a bit bewildered at my mother’s affection for what was obviously a local dish. We paid, sat down and nodded our heads to the music as we ate. My mother explained: “When I was a girl, I tried catfish in New Orleans. Of course it was spicy there.” She cut off a piece of fish and ate it. “This is a bit plain, but it’s so fresh, it’s great too!” The catfish was heavenly! Sweet white fish flesh encased in a fried batter punctuated with just the right amount of salt and pepper. That bottom-feeder was fried to crisp, crunchy perfection without being greasy. As we worked our way through our servings of fish, savored the greens and devoured the potatoes, a couple of the women and some of the musicians (during their break) took turns coming over to talk. We were a novelty. We told them about getting lost on our way to Dallas. “Too late for you to go on to Dallas,” each person told us. We discovered we were 70 miles off the highway. A tall redheaded banjo player kept flirting with Mom. He told us where to find a motel to stay the night, to wait out the fog. “Jist a mile up the road. If you stay here until we are through playing, I’ll drive ahead of you,” he added. We did. Promptly at 11, banjo man got into his big red pickup and drove ahead of us to the nearby, unimaginatively named, “Roadside Motel.” He shouted loudly to wake up the manager. When we were settled, our escort swept off his cowboy hat, made a courtly bow to Mom and rode off. By nine the next morning, the sun had erased all evidence of that fog. We paid our bill, had coffee and biscuits in the motel office and loaded ourselves into my Volare. We found the highway and soon after that, crossed the state border into Texas. Don’t ask me the name of that little catfish joint. Can’t recall it. In fact, over the years, I have begun to wonder if the restaurant really existed or if, like the mythical Brigadoon, that slatbuilt shack of a place sprang up to just save us from a southern swamp road’s hellish night of rain and fog. The catfish was good. The fog was scary but the most memorable part of the trip was seeing my mother for the first time as a person, not just Mom. That night I learned she was also a good friend, worthy travel companion, and, in the eyes of a country –western singer, a redheaded cutie pie. It was the first time I saw her so clearly and it happened in the fog.

BRILLIANT IDEA TO KEEP KITTIES SAFE In the U.S., over 7 million pets go missing every year. It’s especially difficult to help cats return to their homes because so many are “outdoor” creatures. If you have an indoor cat, there’s one easy way to help identify them as missing if they go off for a wander: Orange collars. And spread the word that orange = “I belong to someone and I belong indoors.” KittyConvict.com.
