SEPTEMBER CHARLESTON, SC

ESCAPE THE ORDINARY

Saying adios to summer isn’t that hard when you live in a city that has six months of it. It’s the back-to-school, back-to-work, no more lazy days, and the evenings getting shorter that makes us want to shake things up a little bit. What we really want is less routine and more spontaneity. Less grind, more get up and go. Less samesame, more against the grain. So we sigh as we head back to the salt mines, to the kiddie cab from school to soccer practice, sitting in traffic. Sigh as we put away the pool noodles, rearrange our schedules to try and fit in the extracurriculars, wade through the week and hope that weekends will still feel like a slow road. Instead of wishing the weekdays away, why not embrace them for what they are, love the possibilities, remember the excitement of a new school year, the smell of a fresh box of crayons? The grownup version: Take a class, change your hairstyle, learn a new skill, rewrite your job description or invent a new one, switch gears, change perspective, and do something that makes you feel like you’re going to take over the world. You’re a go-getter, an all-or-nothing gal, a takeno-prisoners force of nature. So GO, sail bravely forth out into the world and just DO and BE.You’re the only YOU that can.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” Dr. Seuss

Jeff Cook Loses 150 Pounds!

BEFORE

In September of 2014, Jeff Cook, of Jeff Cook Real Estate, underwent gastric bypass surgery. In one year, Jeff has lost approximately 150 pounds! Jeff underwent gastric bypass surgery because as he states, “I want to be there long term for my wife, my daughter Ava, and long term for Jeff Cook Real Estate, as well. I appreciate all of our clients, past clients, everyone who works for the company, as well as everyone who does business with us. I want to be around to continue to help Low Country families achieve their real estate goals.” Jeff understands that like weight loss, real estate takes time and hard work, which is why Jeff guarantees to get your home sold!*

was under no illusions. Besides, there would be deputies in the classrooms. I took the job. he first day, Harry led me into my classroom— through six doors with a lot of buzzing and clanking, all operated from central control that reminded me of the Starship Enterprise. I surveyed my English students, most of whom had shot and knifed their way into Omega. Spencer’s gaze burned at me. Hate? Already? And I hadn’t even gotten to diagramming sentences. What was I in for? It turned out Spencer was an African American poet extraordinaire, all six feet, two inches of him. He wasn’t a bad essayist, either. I mistook his glare for a bad bout he’d had with the deputies because he’d taken an extra donut. Prison gossip, I learned, travels far and fast. The classroom was spare, and bright. Fall out AND BRING IT IN.

I taught at the prison for five years, then later K-12 in Argentina, engineering students in Mexico, college English in Chicago. The young were the same wherever I went, not only in grammar problems but also in that need for recognition and accomplishment. It didn’t make any difference whether I was in Florida, Argentina or Chicago. They had a lot in common. ut there were differences. Many students at St. Malachy’s complained. They resisted. Robert didn’t want to be at Omega. In fact, he cried because he was there. But what he did with being there was different. I wouldn’t say that he embraced it, but maybe he did. Maybe I helped him embrace—and own— what he had going for himself. Through writing, and reading. Dozens of books. Robert came in at the second grade reading level; he left Omega three years later with a GED, ready for college. Ready for life. I hope.

Darren Goldwater is a man of action. The play-by-play kind of action, that is. A broadcaster with more than a decade of experience calling a variety of sports at the NCAA Division I level, Darren announces 60-70 televised games per year. This year, he’ll be a regular on the American Sports Network (ASN) and continue with his fifth season as the lead announcer for the Southern Conference, broadcasting televised football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball and softball events on ESPN3. He moved to Charleston straight out of college at Penn State to take a job with The Riverdogs. “I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living,” says Darren, “but I liked sports and a friend told me I had a decent voice and should consider broadcast.” He took a high school reel tape to The Riverdogs interview and got the job—and then seriously worked his way up the ladder. “The fun part about it for me is in the prep work—if you’re prepared you’re ready for anything that happens during the game—it’s all the work you put in prior to the game.” He lives in Charleston with his wife, whom he met when she was a traffic reporter and he was a co-host of an afternoon ESPN radio affiliate. They have a two-year-old daughter and Darren says his favorite thing about his job is having summers off to spend time with his family. On his fast-track career, Darren says, “My goal is to be better every year. I should be better today than I was yesterday. Every day.”

Dear time, Give me my childhood back. It’s a blur. Sharpen those images of blanket forts, of loose teeth and how weirdly proud

DEAR TIME, BE KIND. PUMP THE BRAKES SO I CAN KEEP UP WITH SEASONS, TRENDS, SETBACKS AND CHANGES. I OWE YOU ONE.

I was when they fell out, of trees I climbed, of the braces I loathed in my smile, of every color of my horrible, matching outfits. Dear time, Give me my teens again. Every awkward Instant Message and love letter, every sparkly gloss I smeared on my face, all of those humiliating notes I passed in class. Also, give me back those hours I lost straightening my hair when that was a new thing. Dear time, Give me more of you. Make the sunrises and sunsets longer. Give me just one more hour before I fling my alarm clock across the room (die already!). Turn Happy Hour into Happy Day. Dear time, Stand still. Not in the sappy,“I need this kiss to last forever” way. But in the way that gives me an eternity to check out my flouncy new skirt in the mirror before work. Dear time, Stop pressuring me! Be patient. I only need 14 more minutes to curl my hair before my dinner reservation. Fashionably late is still a thing. Dear time, Oh no, you didn’t just do that to my face! And my thighs! And my butt! I spy every new wrinkle and sag. Dear time, Why do you look like a clock? I think of you more as a wise Meryl Streep type. Classic but still gets high, like in the movie “It’s Complicated,” spinning around with Steve Martin on a dance floor. You’re free and feisty. I like that.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT ME we asked 24 women ONE tough question and they wowed us with their 24 brilliant answers.

Graham L. Ervin Marketing and Events Supervisor The Reynolds Group

“I love that I wake up every day in a city by the water. I love that I can leg press more than most guys at the gym. I love that I do little unexpected things for others to brighten their day. I love that I was born with two dimples in my smile. I love that I create handmade cards and send them via snail mail. I love that I inspire others to become better versions of themselves. I love that I have a job that keeps me 'IN THE KNOW' and up on the latest trends. I love looking back on my Instagram profile (@grahamervin) to see all the beautiful people, places, things and moments I’ve captured through pictures.

“I love that water is my favorite thing to drink. I love that I can insert myself into most any song on the radio because it makes the listening experience so much more interesting. I love that somewhere in my attic I still have all of my Babysitter Club and Sweet Valley High books stashed away for my daughter to read one day. I love that I followed my instinct and painted my front door pink.

I love that I live in a city where really good french fries are in abundance.”

Chassity Evans, LookLingerLove.com

“I love digging my toes in the sand. I love that I love to travel and can speak a second language. I love that even when I am afraid, I still go on after my dreams. I love that I never lose my sense of wonder and always choose to keep a fire. I love that I'm a creator, a doer, a maker but most of all, a believer.” Jeanne Everett, Fashion & Product Stylist for skirt! Magazine

“I love that I am an optimistic soul. I love that I’ve learned you can’t bank time.

I love my sense of humor and that I can use the F word in almost every part of speech. I love knowing that the only way I can keep it is to give it away. I love that I have reinvented myself umpteen million times and I love that I finally got it right. I love being a mother. I love being an efficiency expert. I love that I get to come to a job that results in young people achieving their dreams. I love knowing how to simultaneously record all those Sunday night TV shows. I love that 58 is the new 38. I love that my yoga practice is my life practice. I love that I have learned to pause. I love keeping my side of the street clean. And I love love love that I’m not afraid to try.” Frances W. Bramlett Vice President, Donor Relations The Citadel Foundation

“I love that I get to use my body as a tool to express myself as work. I love that I have supportive parents, who have always been there for me.

I love animals, especially my own three. I love wine so much (sometimes too much). I love my positive outlook on life; it makes people and things more beautiful and enjoyable.” Crystal Wellman Professional dancer and yoga teacher at Charleston Power Yoga skirt!magazine septemberw2015

8/25/15 8:20:58 AM

“I love that spending the day at the beach in the sun and sand is my favorite kind of day.

I love that my job is never the same each day, always an exciting new adventure with my students every day. I love that my favorite place to travel is always home to Nashville, to visit my family and close friends. I love that my favorite hobby is reading any good book, particularly on a rainy afternoon. I love that I become more confident and open minded every year, and enjoy learning new things.” Megan Crouch

Math Teacher, Porter Gaud

“I love that I can feel like a million bucks wearing clothes I purchased at Goodwill.

I love that I know how to hold my own in difficult conversations. I love my green eyes, which everyone assumes are blue. I love that I walk around my downtown neighborhood often enough to notice when things change. I love changing my hair color when the seasons change.” Mallory Noelle Roberts 4th year medical student at MUSC

“I love that I am free spirited, spontaneous and will wake up on a Saturday morning and explore where the wind takes me. I love that I have an overflowing bookshelf with new stories and worlds to get lost in. I love that I feel strongest whenever I wear teal and that I have been lovingly nicknamed both "sunshine" and "terrible." I love that I'm 32 and still play kickball, that I secretly get misty eyed whenever I see a random act of kindness, and most of all, I love that I love to love.” Teresa Errico Freelance Writer and Editor

“I love that I wake up each day thankful for what I have learned along the way and for all the possibilities the day has in store for me.

I love knowing that time has taught me that if you give the world your very BEST, it has a way of flowing back to you in unexpected ways.

And I love that at the end of the day, I can sit on a porch swing, enjoying the sea breeze, the bird’s songs, my spoiled dogs, my trailblazing daughter and find great comfort in the fact that I get to help so many people celebrate life’s great moments!”

“I love that I get the opportunity to play soccer every day. I love that I can laugh at every one of my lame jokes. I love that I can bake all kinds of desserts for every kind of occasion. I love that I can walk around in shorts and a T-SHIRT every day and feel confident about myself and who I am.” Claire Newman, senior soccer player at College of Charleston

"I love going for a run along the streets of this Holy City, as the sun casts its morning light, revealing a beautiful history. I love the way movement frees my body and ignites my soul. I love bringing a smile to someone's face. I love stepping out of my comfort zone. I love meeting a stranger only to find out just how connected we are. I love how learning helps me grow and I love teaching others what I know. I love discovering my abilities extend much further beyond my perceived limitations. I love to love and be loved.” Jennie Brooks, Owner of Longevity Fitness Charleston

“I love that I've chosen to live and work alongside people who constantly make me laugh until I can't feel my face. I love that I'm not afraid to travel and explore new places alone. I love that Jeff Goldblum once gave me a bear hug and that there's photographic evidence of it. I love both getting gussied up and going makeup free, equally. I love that I still know how to cry when my heart feels broken, and that I'm not ashamed to dance it out when I'm overcome with joy.” Haley Shaw, Co-founder of The Royal Wild, songwriter,

“I love my job and making a difference through my passion for music. I love that I'm a risk taker and can trust that things will always work out. I love that I appreciate nature every day.

I love that I finally had the courage to cut my hair short (and it rocks).

I love to sit on a porch and enjoy a good conversation with the people I love.” Janice Crews Director of Education and Community Engagement Charleston Symphony Orchestra

Lisa Thomas, Owner Out of Hand & Ooh! Events

“I love my dog, it's simple but true, I love him, I love him, I love him! I love that on top of all of this I am still even more blessed to have the most amazing husband, best friend, partner and partner in crime. Life is perfect because we have each other.” Jennifer Sexton, Sales and Event Manager, The Carolina Girl

I love that I am 50 plus, fabulous and comfortable in my own skin. I love that I do not apologize for taking up space even when I am not invited. I love that I have failed many many times and plan to fail many more because that means I am still daring enough to try. I love that I run at least 100 miles a month. I love that I will almost sell my soul for a great cupcake with buttercream frosting. And most of all, I love the fact that I am an amazing sistergirlfriend. Doretha Walker, PhD Assistant Professor South University

“I love that as I age, I become more comfortable and confident with who I am. I love my silver white hair. I love that when I sit on my patio at dusk, deer bring their fawns to my yard. I love that I still love to learn and do new things.” Janet Nye Writer, Harlequin Superromance

“I love that I can be tender and tough. I love how much I love learning. I love that I love to share my secrets...you know the good stuff about life. Ask me, I'll tell you what's up, tech, spirituality, best place to get coffee. I love that I sing unabashedly in the car...and the shower... and anywhere else. I love my sense of humor, I can make me laugh like no one else. I love my blue eyes and that love got me through some really awkward adolescent years. I love that I am clumsy on a normal day, but put me in heels and I'm like a gazelle, weird but true. I love how hard I try to forgive myself and I love it when I succeed. And I secretly love that I flirt with myself in shop windows as I walk down the street on good hair days.” Laura Olsen Photographer and web designer

“I love that I experienced loss in my twenties. It helped me gain a clear perspective of why we should live every moment to its fullest and to have no regrets. I love that my daughter laughs like I do and we laugh a lot. I love that I'm 40 yet still feel 27, yet I did give all my fabulous high heels to my 20-something girlfriends. I love a glass of wine (or two) with my husband over any night on the town.” Ryan Nelson Owner, Nelwater Consulting

“I love the experiences that life has introduced me to. Through those I found out that I am stronger than ever and those challenges are often shared by others. As a result, I can not only offer sympathy but I am even more empathetic to mankind. I love that I am literally stopping and smelling the roses and that I am the only person that can truly determine my destiny. Most of all, what I love about me is the embracing of technology with my Macbook and social media, and impacting lives one post at a time!”

“I love how I can both begin and end a day in the orange glow of the sun.

I love that I choose to live where the smell of Tea Olive wafts through the air like a secret that only I know. I love knowing that my children are thankful I am their mother. I love my scars that remind me of falling down but getting up again. I love that I still have a long list of things to do, and see, and be.” Amy Perryman, SC Ports Authority

“I love being a morning person, although those closest to me may not share this affection. I love that I can eat brownie mix way more than advisable and not think twice about it the next day. I love no matter what happened in my day, when I go to the beach it's like hitting a reset button.I love being able to laugh until my cheeks hurt at my own terrible jokes. I love that beekeeping has taught me to always be in awe of the little things, even if they sometimes come with a sting.” Megan Swanson Content Editor at BoomtownROI

“I love that I can sit in a book store for hours and never want to leave.

I love that I get to sit and talk to a 95 year old and hear about what it was like to live in Charleston when they were a young adult. I love that I truly feel confident in who I am. I love I can sleep till 10 a.m. and not feel guilty about it. I love that when I really want to reach a goal, I persist until I've reached it. I love that my husband and I are raising such incredible young men. I love that my youngest son still lets me tuck him in at night. I love that contrary to popular opinion, I still sing in the shower, loudly.” Julie R. Rogers, M.D. Mt. Pleasant Eye Surgeons

“I love that I know every word to every song on the ‘Annie’ soundtrack. I love that my left hip has held three children (not at the same time). I love that I make going to the gym a priority. I love that I’m still close friends with the girls I met on the playground in elementary school. I love that I laugh, cry, and give hugs freely. I love that in spite of all the things to feel hopeless about, I’m hopeful.” Angie Mizzell, lifestyle blogger

Jessica Morse turns beauty into business. The founder of organic lifestyle blog, BareBeauty.com, created her site “out of frustration, as so many worthy endeavors begin,” says Jessica. In early 2012, after experiencing some health issues, she did a 21-day detox cleanse with Dr. Sherri Jacobs and it was a lightbulb moment. Jessica moved to Charleston after working in fashion in NYC for Vera Wang and Ralph Lauren. After teaching pilates for a time, she began doing research on natural health and holistic care. “I realized there were were a lot of unpronounceable ingredients in my personal care and beauty products. If we shouldn’t eat what we cannot pronounce, why should we slather it all over our skin, our largest organ?” Jessica started her blog because she wanted to share the information she discovered that worked so well for her—after some fertility issues, she was also expecting her first child. “I became a self-made expert,” she says, adding that “the more research I did, the more it made me want to share information about possible harmful chemicals in cosmetics.” After three years of website success, Jessica’s next step is to offer consulting services for consumers, “great for the busy everywoman who wants to overhaul her beauty and health regimen, who wants to make healthy changes but isn’t sure where to start.” Check out her site and upcoming services at BareBeauty.com.

Marlene Navor is a PR powerhouse. In her fifth year as Director of Athletics Communications at the College of Charleston, Marlene oversees daily media relations and publicity for the Cougars’ 21-varsity-sports program, which competes in the Colonial Athletic Association. She primarily works with men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, and the nationally-ranked sailing teams. The 37-year-old dynamo is only the third-ever sports information director in CofC athletics history and is one of only a few female head SIDs at a Division I institution in the country. Her interest in sports journalism began in high school, when she shadowed sports writers at The Seattle Times. “I have two older brothers, but they were in a band and not interested in sports, so my dad took me to ball games and I developed an interest in sports,” she says. She worked her way up to Texas A&M University, then applied for the director position at CofC “My interview was the first time I’d visited Charleston and the athletic director took me on a tour of the city by car and to dinner, which was the smartest thing because it made me fall in love with it and that’s why I took the job,” she says. Marlene loves working with student athletes and their parents and says, “College athletics was a great fit for me because I love helping them grow and get recognition through media. College level, you feel like you’re more part of the team and you can work with multiple sports.” She added, “It’s important to help my team grow, no matter where I work!”

Apps to Help you Get Moving {literally}:

SIMPLIFYING YOUR SOCIAL MARKETING

Obsessed with checking notifications and scrolling through your news feed? FOMO (that is the feeling of missing out) is a legitimate issue now that we’re getting “inside” peeks into everyone’s lives. If you’re feeling like you can’t keep up, remember that social media is a filter, and most people choose to share the highlights. No one is as perfect as they may seem online. To break the habit and FOMO blues, try giving yourself set times during the day to check your notifications and make sure you put your phone away during family time. Work on REALLY being present in all areas of your life. In reality, you’re not missing out on anything. This moment is all you have, and the people that matter most are right in front of you.

Efficient social media marketing is a must for busy business owners. If you’re spread too thin, the quality of your content marketing and the depth of your customer relationships slip. And nobody wants that. HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER: Is your business positioned on the sites that your customers spend the most time on? (i.e. Targeting teens? Snapchat and Instagram is a wise move...but stay off of Facebook & LinkedIn.) Is your content quick & easy to read? Think you’re tight on time? So is your customer. Subtract technical jargon and confusing language. Does your presence speak the truth as to who you are and what you stand for? Add personality and authenticity. Does your business talk back and initiate conversations? Yes, this is SOCIAL media. That means you have to stop playing social wallflower and speak up. Don’t worry...it’s expected.

"Social media has given us this idea that we should all have a posse of friends when in reality, if we have one or two really good friends, we are lucky." Brene Brown

Marlayah attended Pattison’s Academy Summer Camp for four years and worked there for another four. More info on Pattison’s at Pedal4Pattinsons.org; you can also donate directly to Marlayah’s college fund at South State Bank under “Marlayah Legare College Fund.”

MEET Marlayah Legare Marlayah was born with a disease called Arthrogryposis, which means her joints and muscles don’t work as they should and aren’t strong enough to allow her to walk. On top of that, two years later she was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. “Growing up, I was always surrounded by great people. I had a mother and father who cared so much for me,” says Marlayah. Sadly, when she was seven years old, her father died from a massive heart attack, leaving her mother to raise two children on her own. Even through that tragedy, Marlayah says, “Everything I do in a positive way is for him...I try my hardest to make him happy and proud of me.” And proud he would be, as the 19-year-old is going to be a sophomore transfer student the College of Charleston this year, with plans of becoming a pediatrician and a spokesperson for people with disabilities. Her determination and passion shines as bright as her smile. And like any other college student, Marlayah says she’s most excited about “gaining my independence by living on my own, meeting new people, and the social get togethers.” Her personal motto? “Life is what you make it, so why not make it beautiful?” Well said, Marlayah!
