The Art of Doing Nothing. Spend the afternoon thinking about a project. Plan it step-by-step in your mind.
Get Back to it Later Lie on the couch and watch all the episodes of past seasons of Game of Thrones. Call it keeping up with pop culture. Devote a day to clearing the mess on your desk. Get sidetracked by the joy of shredding. Create a summer bucket list. Lose it on your desk. Start to load old CDs onto your computer and get distracted by making themed playlists for all your friends. Think about growing something.
Decide it’s too late— maybe next year. Vow to lighten your library before fall. Create piles to give away. Sneeze and sweat a lot. Find a book you forgot you owned and take it to bed. Push the piles in the corner until the weather cools off. Lie down a lot—it’s hot. Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Ali Douglass

When it comes to your mortgage,
TrustUs.
Barbara does.
As a Prudential exec in global locales around the world, Barbara was well-versed in success. So cue her next move—literally and metaphorically—to Charleston and to Chief Outsiders, a company that provides part-time marketing executives to companies looking for full-scale results. “Many of our clients are second- and third-generation family businesses where the owner Barbara Mulhern Fowler Partner, Chief Outsiders 843.388.7769 chiefoutsiders.com bfowler@chiefoutsiders.com
has a vision of where he or she wants the company to go, but the vision isn’t being realized. We work on everything from finding the right target markets, implementing inbound marketing strategies, developing content, improving customer service, even reviewing pricing.” And when it came to Barbara’s home needs, the business acumen of Lucey Mortgage was appreciated, too. “I had had a very poor experience last year with a larger company, so I was expecting the same process. But Lorcan and his staff kept me up to date, returned all calls promptly, told me what to send and what not to send, and the mortgage was approved quickly. In addition, after I moved, Lorcan met with me and gave me great advice on getting my business started here.”

Single in Charleston?
Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hays of selectivewomen.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect and form REAL relationships.
That’s why so many singles contact selectivewomen.com. Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one of the area’s oldest and largest introduction services, from Savannah and Hilton Head to Charleston, Jacksonville and beyond.

allusions it calls up about your life. My journals are choppy and confused and filled with
themes. Watercolor and charcoal sunsets, a Warholian riff on Britney-Spears-as-MarilynMonroe, multimedia collages referencing beauty in media. All year I had worked consistently, ended days covered in smudges and splatters, but it culminated in the disappointment that I had many so-so creative skills, but not one singular, canvas-worthy talent. It became evident I was not destined for gallery walls. Yet today I’ve converted the need to create and share into painting the town via strokes on a keyboard—finding women who mold Charleston for themselves. We think Paula, Frances and Ashley are making their mark on this town by painting it too—literally, historically, and educationally. Take a cue from them and use your own Red, White and True Blue spirit to do something new this month. Whether paintbrush, petition, or patio party—your brush strokes can take a single day from ordinary to extraordinary. And unlike my senior year, no one’s handing out grades. So dig in, get messy, and create your portfolio with abandon.

I
wish I could remember my first time. The moment I crossed over from being an innocent virgin brunette to being a little less virgin and a little more brunette. I wish I could remember the inner turmoil that surely accompanied my decision to go ahead and get a little work done—even if it was simply a minor DIY dye job. With a seven-buck transaction at the drug store, I sold out, gave in, surrendered to the vanity-driven, youth-chasing, chemical-dependent, multi-billion dollar beauty cult that promised to wash away my gray. Ha. It mostly just washed away my seven bucks, then sent me to the hair salon for a ten-times-seven-bucks cover-up. You’d think those little squares of foil were made of precious metals. If sex sells, then I’m pretty sure our boundless craving for beauty is the ruthless wholesaler that buys it and marks it up. And somewhere in the mix is the door-to-door huckster who barges in with the sales pitch that beauty = youth, and therefore, gray = bad. Then in waltz the L’Oreal, Clairol, Revlon gang to rework the equation, to convince you that “you’re worth it,” that age-faded tresses can once again shimmer and shine in Technicolor if you use their foams, goo and “color baths,” as early L’Oreal and Clairol products were called. Meanwhile corporate beauty giants shimmy and shine all the way to the bank. Unfortunately, my genetic predisposition to premature gray and to being a cheapskate mean that I no longer plunk down the big salon bucks for the professional foil and tint extravaganza. Now I follow my Natural Instincts and stock up on Clairol boxes of “all natural” semi-permanent color—supposedly good for 28 washes—when they’re on sale. How exactly this potion of ethanolamine, trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate, soytrimonium chloride, and something called C12-15 pareth-3, that I willingly and regularly rub on my head is “all natural” is beyond me. Way beyond. I figure in the spirit of the “If I’ve only one life, let me live it as a blonde!” old Clairol ad, if I’ve only got one life to live, and I’m not a blonde anyway, then why not go ahead and shorten it by subjecting myself to toxic chemicals so I don’t have to live it as a gray fox? Even though I now only spend $6.50 per box compared to the $75 salon job, I wait until my “Toasted Almond” color looks more like “Sickly Albino Chipmunk” hue before I reapply—stretching my investment to get at least 35 washes out of the 28-wash box. It doesn’t help that I also swim regularly; chlorine build-up only aggravates those poor chipmunks acting as my hair. When I go for a haircut, my wonderful, non-judgmental stylist pretends not to cringe. But I am tired of this losing battle; I’m ready to throw in the towel, or just wrap it in a permanent turban around my head, and accept the fact that melanin production is no longer my body’s priority. It’s evidently got other things to accomplish in its few remaining years, like growing hairs on my chin. Back before I moved to South Carolina, I lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where I’m pretty sure hair dye was outlawed. The women I met had doctorates and unglossed lips. They wore Birkenstocks and tee shirts sans bras, and wiry, wavy salt-n-pepper ’dos were de rigueur. Even minus the Ph.D., I was finally in my fashion element. I vowed that I’d be more like these weathered, real women than like the dewy beauty-parlored ladies I’d grown up with in the South. I’d be authentic, embrace my true self, my aging natural beauty, my inner Emmylou. Then I aged and changed my tune, and my tint. And now it’s going to be really hard to reclaim those au naturel roots. From my first faux highlights to my most recent rinse, I’ve fought these pesky shades of gray with considerable angst because to me there is more that’s coloring the conversation. Clairol’s ad campaign from 1956 hinted at the underlying existential questions: Does she… or doesn’t she? the ad asked. To me the interesting question isn’t whether you can tell if a woman does or doesn’t color her hair, but what coloring her hair tells about her. Is she comfortable in her own skin? Does she own and honor her true self? Can vanity and authenticity cohabitate? Is her youthfulness determined by appearance, or something else? And what does it matter if she does or if she doesn’t anyway? If hair color reveals anything, my indeterminate grayish-brownish will reveal that I struggle with the answers to these questions. I am not a sassy redhead, nor a bombshell blonde, nor, any longer, a trustworthy brunette. But nor (I hope) am I a washed-up old lady whose gray tresses wash out any residual radiance or color in my face. And so for now, I am an authentic fake, or faux authentic. I am comfortable in my own skin and my not-soown hair. For better or worse, I am silvering, and like silver, I can only hope my value improves with age. My natural instincts say let it show through. One of these days, maybe I’ll listen to them.

Last month, sixty thousand of my closest friends and I danced like fools at a Macklemore and Ryan Lewis show. During the brief moments between one of my ridiculous dance moves and the next, I stood slack-jawed and in awe of the energy these guys brought to share with us. And to top it all off, the themes from their new album The Heist range from thrift store shopping to marriage equality: two things that I proudly support!

Chevalo Wilsondebriano turns up the heat. After 25 years on the job, this former New Yorker swapped firefighting for firing up the grill. Chevalo and his wife Monique moved their children south, and their business, Charleston Gourmet Burger Co., has been booming since April 2012. “We’ve beaten out most small businesses and most Hollywood marriages.” The couple had long been lusting for the best burger, and the best was born in their own backyard. “It was the response of our family and our friends that made us say, wait a second, maybe we made something special.” The secret? One soft bun, zero condiments—they say they’re “sinful”—and a marinade of nine Lowcountry herbs and spices. “It brings out the natural flavors and juices in the meat.” They’re mixing their marinade for all to find at the Charleston Farmers Market, Mount Pleasant Farmers Market and gourmet retailers across the Lowcountry. “It’s really all we feel that we need.” What do you like about reading skirt? “It gives me ideas for what to give my wife.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “It’s the ultimate expression of security in your masculinity.” 34

Sera Beak
I felt like I was seven years old again.
Sera Beak
M
y first official duty as sister-of-the-bride was to fire the priest. This wasn’t exactly easy for a former-Catholic-goodgirl-people-pleaser with freckles. That said, telling a priest his services weren’t needed anymore because I was now officiating my sister’s wedding was enormously empowering and deeply significant. I swear I could hear Mary Magdalene clapping. You see, when I was a child, I desperately wanted to be a priest when I grew up. I heard what many Catholics refer to as “the Call,” but quickly found out from my Sunday school teachers and parish priests that women can’t be priests because Jesus only had male disciples. Every time I was told I couldn’t be a priest it felt like an ice-cold fist punched my red hot and holy heart. So, I did what many excluded and wounded souls do—I left the Church and started searching. I camped out in the New Age section at Barnes & Noble.

Red Hot and Holy
Marshall Allyn White, M.D. I studied world religions behind the rigid walls of academia at Harvard and then traveled around the globe to experience their lived reality. I interviewed holy men and women, mystics and saints, gurus and devotees. I practiced myriad forms of meditation, performed esoteric rituals, participated in countless spiritual workshops and self-help classes and therapies and psychic fairs and Burning Man. I even moved to Northern California. Throughout my vast and varied explorations, “the Call” never stopped, but I had found no satisfying way of answering It. Then, my sister got engaged. The night she told my family the good news I was giddy with excitement, and my soul slipped outta me in the form of a daring question: “Can I officiate the ceremony?” To my surprise, my sister said yes. Of course, my family felt there should also be a priest present with me to make sure the marriage was legit and properly stamped with the sacred. So, we started asking around. Over and over again, priests told us they could not officiate the wedding with me because I was not a priest. I felt like I was seven years old again. Finally, one brave radical priest risked hellfire, and together, we began to create the ceremony. Although this kind priest was open to my input, I found myself constantly deferring to his holier status. I overrode my intuitions of how the marriage ceremony would best serve my sister and her soon-to-be husband because I sincerely (and somewhat childishly) believed I didn’t have the right cosmic credentials. It was around this time I found The Gospel of Mary Magdalene at Costco. Yep, wedged between a celebrity’s memoir and the latest diet book winked a translation of this ancient Gnostic gospel (dated to the second century C.E.) that had been excluded from the Christian Bible. According to this divine text, Mary Magdalene was not only a disciple of Jesus, but also his closest friend and star pupil. In fact, in other Gnostic gospels (there were many gospels that didn’t make the canonical cut), Mary Magdalene is referred to as “The Woman Who Knows All” and the “Apostle to the Apostles” and is described as a powerful spiritual leader who preached, healed, performed rituals and taught the other disciples. In most paintings of Magdalene, she is depicted wearing a red robe, which originally was a sign of advanced spiritual status (hence all those cardinal robes swirlin’ around the Vatican). But alas, in year 591, for some mysterious reason, Pope Gregory declared Mary Magdalene a whore. Despite the fact that the Church has since retracted this ridiculous claim about this remarkable woman, a woman wearing red is often still perceived as fallen, sinful, and even evil...definitely not “spiritual.” Needless to say, I spent that entire evening drinking in Mary Magdalene’s wisdom alongside a spicy glass of Costco red. The next day, hazy-headed but clear-hearted, I walked through my neighborhood park soaking up the rare San Franciscan summer sunshine. Suddenly, a Truth wilder and freer than the manmade rules that have tried to contain It exploded inside my female body. I stopped alive in my tracks. “Holy hotcakes!” I shouted to the majestic redwoods. “What have we been thinking!? I don’t need a male priest next to me in order to officiate my own sister’s wedding! I can do this on my own! I can do this on! my! own!” I immediately called my sister, and we agreed to nix the priest. After I laid him off, I got ordained online. Next, came another vital decision: What the hell to wear? I asked my sister for advice. Unaware of my recent Magdalene studies, the bride-to-be clearly stated her desire for my ceremonial attire: “I want you in a long, sexy red dress, like something a modern priestess would wear.” My eyes filled with tears and I bowed my head. As the late, great Jungian psychologist, James Hillman declared in his brilliant book, The Soul’s Code, “A calling may be postponed, avoided, intermittently missed. It may also possess you completely. Whatever; eventually it will out. It will make its claim. [It] does not go away.” Six months later, on a rainy November afternoon at Middleton Plantation outside Charleston, South Carolina, I started to answer my Calling in front of 250 people while wearing a sexy red dress. Thanks to my sister and her fiancé and the book buyer at Costco, I got to do what my red hot and holy heart had been aching to do since I was a child. I got to be my Self. Out loud and on purpose and in full service to Divine love. It’s impossible not to think about transformation.
Stacy Appel
J
uly in my town is a month of noisy industry. With no rain on the horizon for months to come, roofers arrive in the early cool of morning, awakening everyone at the same moment with the staccato rhythm of electric nail guns and hammering. Treecutters pierce the sleepy heat of late afternoon, their ladders clanging and saws roaring, dashing everyone’s hopes for naps or backyard suppers once the deafening noise of the woodchippers commences. It’s impossible not to think about transformation. Three of only six houses on my street are in the process of complete renovations, with construction crews arriving daily in trucks of all sizes, shouting to one another over Donna Summer and Elton John songs which blare from radios they tote along. I put in earplugs and try to work late at night when they have all gone home again. The truth is, I believe I’m a little envious. Inner transformation seems nowhere near as clear-cut as sanding before a new paint job or rebuilding a rotted fence, and it’s slow-going, mysterious. Some evenings I go to bed impossibly stressed, and yet in the morning I find myself filled with well-being, as if a benevolent work crew has visited overnight and mended things I can’t identify. My perspective widens suddenly, or my mood reverts, a stubborn old horse who just wants to go back to the barn. Last week I talked with Savanna, a woman I met recently who just completed chemotherapy. The illness prompted her to leave a high-visibility political job for a new career as a comedian and healer. Nothing is assured, financially or even health-wise, but she feels happier than before the cancer diagnosis. She believes she has found her right work and a new self. Another friend, a farmer profiled in national newspapers for her business acumen and the quality of the farm products, lost her barn and all of her chickens to a wildfire a couple of years ago. I remember her sobbing on the phone; the loss of her livelihood and the prized barn was devastating. Now she sells lavender from a new lavender field she planted and teaches women in Haiti and elsewhere about sustainable farming, things she dreamt of doing but never before found time. Lasting inner change can be messy, heart-wrenching, confusing. Crisis brings old hidden despair to the surface. We find that we have to ask for help. One of the Grimm fairy tales read to me as a child stayed with me longer than many more appealing stories. I remembered it vividly not only because of its odd title, Rumpelstiltskin, but also because the tale involved such very painful stakes. In order to seem more important, a miller tells a king that his daughter can spin straw into gold, which is more than a slight exaggeration of her abilities. Naturally enough, the king imprisons her overnight in a tower room full of straw and a spinning wheel, directing her to spin the straw into gold by morning. There’s one tiny catch: If she fails, he’ll cut off her head.
Alone, terrified, unable to make a dent in the huge pile of straw, she loses all hope. To the rescue, or so it would appear, comes the imp Rumpelstiltskin, who strikes a tough bargain with her before helping her magically on three successive nights so that she may comply with the king’s demands. But the cost is dear indeed: first, her necklace, then her ring, and when she has no more jewelry to offer, the promise of her first-born child as payment for his other-worldly assistance. All goes well for a time—the gold-loving King happily takes her as his Queen, and she bears him a child. But a deal is a deal. Back comes the imp to collect on the final installment of his layaway plan. The Queen is quite rich now, but Rumpelstiltskin isn’t interested in wealth, just her baby. He will only relinquish his claim to her child if she can guess his name within three days. The miller’s daughter was one unlucky girl. I wasn’t familiar with the concept of the term “blackmail” back then, but any child could sense that the whole set-up was hideously unfair. Not once, but twice, she found herself in dire straits through necessity. In the book, she didn’t even have a name, and her circle of would-be benefactors was downright depressing. When your rescuer turns out to have been cut from pretty much the same cloth as your father and your new husband, the world must seem a Grimm place indeed. Did the miller’s daughter pray, meditate, eat a pint of chocolate fudge ice cream or call her best friends in tears? Did she get a headache from over-thinking it all, or want to run away? Did she hate her father, who could have just told the King she was a terrific cook and not gotten her into this mess in the first place? The story doesn’t say. But the resolution hints at the complexity of coincidence and divine intelligence. Two fruitless days of guessing the imp’s name have gone by. Time is running out. On the very day before the Queen’s baby must be given up for good, her messenger accidentally stumbles upon a remote mountain cottage, where he comes across a sight so odd he can’t help reporting it when he returns, though he has no knowledge of his mission or the Queen’s dilemma: He spied a peculiar little man hopping on one foot around a campfire, singing a strange, self-congratulatory song with his own name as the last line of the verse. Does the messenger, by chance, remember the name? Perfectly—it was Rumpelstiltskin. Impossible interventions, healing by way of dire circumstances. These things are the kernels of fairy tales, but every so often they make up the chapters of our real lives as well. To be a full self or an artist of any sort may require learning to face down the spinning wheel night after night, accustoming ourselves to the pile of straw and the fierce loneliness of the tower room, the impossibly high stakes. Sometimes the circumstances we can least control are the ones of our greatest transformation, which arrives from a land far beyond the limits of intellect, and turns to gold each of the moments which came before.

Ashley Webb personifies the art of teaching. When Ashley isn’t working in the classroom, she’s working with clay. “It’s like my body and mind just know how to create forms without really thinking about it.” But the Dean of Arts and Humanities at Wando High School (and the winner of the Gibbes’ Museum 2013 Mary Whyte Art Educator Award) puts thought into moving her students forward. “I can help them to find their niche in terms of what their concentration might be.” She teaches the fundamentals of visual design, as well as Honors and Advanced Placement classes, and regardless of level, she says the arts adhere students to their intellectual interests. “Connections need to be made across disciplines. That strengthens a student’s understanding of concepts.” To battle budget cuts in the fine arts that could lessen those links, she wrote grants for the distinguished arts and arts in basic curriculum, receiving more than $100,000 for programs and innovations to support student success. “I consider success being anything in which they’ve grown or learned.”

Paula Head McInerny went from camera to canvas. A photographer for 20 years, Paula found that a camera and its digital world brought constraints. “There are so many rules in photography.” So she picked up a palette knife and broke those rules with a canvas. She started taking workshops and found a teacher and mentor to help her develop her own style. “That’s a long process—it’s not necessarily comfortable.” More at ease now, she incorporates a brush and charcoal as she paints and often uses photographs as a starting point, taking simple shots of still life, people and urban scenes. Then she transforms with texture through the knife. “I want the viewer to stand there and look at the image and travel around the canvas.” You can see the painter in her studio at Redux on a typical day and, although her fine art is for sale, she isn’t concerned about price tags. “There’s a certain freedom to getting older. I don’t care quite as much.”

Frances Henderson Ford preserves our paint history. When it comes to paint, Frances swaps a brush for a surgeon’s scalpel. The architectural conservator professional slices onsite samples of building finishes to conduct paint analysis of their layers for architects, preservationists, and sometimes residents. “My work and the level of analysis are all driven by the clients’ needs.” Also an adjunct professor at College of Charleston, she’s completed projects for Preservation Society of Charleston, Historic Charleston Foundation, and the French Huguenot Church. Frances slides the cross-section samples under a microscope, pinpoints their places in history, writes a report and fact-checks her findings. “Paint analysis isn’t enough. It always needs to be married with historic documentation for the building.” To make her documentation more accessible to her clients, she matches the colors of the selected time periods to modern paints so surfaces can be replicated and restored. “It’s a documentation project so that the history of the interior colors don’t go away.”

It’s a privilege to watch a kid grow up, and to get to be a pal along the way.
I
Jen Reeder
was lying on a beach, being “buried” in the sand by some of my nieces and nephews. They were all under the age of 10, still too young to do anything naughty, like give me sand boobs or a penis. They also weren’t sculpting me into a more flattering shape. As my nephew Mitchell piled sand on my beer gut, exaggerating its bulge, I saw the question form in his eyes. “Auntie Jenny, are you ever going to have babies?” I shook my head emphatically. “Why would I want babies when I have such awesome nephews and nieces?” That’s right—I’m an auntie, not a mommy (first by choice, then by fertility issues capped by a miscarriage, then full-circle to choice again). But even though I’m a proud auntie to seven of my favorite people, I’m not expecting a lot of fanfare this month for my designated special day, since about as many people know that Aunts and Uncles Day is July 26 as know that February 22 is National Margarita Day (another fine cause for celebration).

Anything But Blue
Mother’s Day, on the other hand, is never overlooked. The national media fills with inspiring motherhood stories and even reminders, like a memorable Saturday Night Live Weekend Update when Tina Fey announced, “Mother’s Day is tomorrow, so don’t forget to pick up a phone and put out that fire.” Obviously I didn’t give birth to my nephews and nieces, but they hold a special place in my heart. I doubt I could love them more if they were my own kids (though I’m sure their mothers would disagree). One way or another, it has been immensely cool to have unique relationships with these bright little spirits, a different relationship than if I had changed their diapers, or enforced discipline beyond, “Only three pieces of candy right now—eat those and then we’ll talk.” And when we talk, I’m not a Charlie Brown “wah wah wah” adult; I get to have actual conversations about their weird dreams, shifting friendships, what they really think. They even ask me for my opinions, or to tell them stories (the one about having diarrhea under a ski lift is a perpetual crowd-pleaser). Despite my sometimes off-color remarks, I think their folks would rather they turn to me for advice than the Internet. The ranks of childless (or “childfree,” as some women prefer) aunts are growing. A 2010 report by the Pew Research Center found “childlessness” has risen across all racial and ethnic groups in America, with nearly one in five American women ending “her childbearing years without having borne a child, compared with one in 10 in the 1970s.” Clearly, we’ve entered the Era of the Auntie. My only biological nephew is three, my brother’s son, Lucas. I’m excited for the ways our relationship will evolve as he ages because it’s been such a delight to get to know the other six kids from my husband’s side: Collin, Mitchell, Brendan, Morgan, Ashley and Maddy. Bryan’s two sisters took turns having a child each year for six years, so they’re a tight-knit group of cousins. Bryan and I get to be the “loco” aunt and uncle who try to be catalysts for fun. Jump on beds? Check. Chase a squealing toddler around a grocery store? Check. Conga line through a restaurant when no one else is dancing? Of course! Their parents used to complain that we’d wind them up, then hand them back when they got tired and started whining or crying. It’s a completely true accusation—and a big perk of being an auntie. It’s nice to be able to talk to these funny little people without the pressure of setting a good example. I remember getting in trouble one Christmas with Collin when he was about three because we were looking at a sticker book Santa had brought. He didn’t feel like coloring or carefully placing stickers over the pictures, but it sure was fun to point to each featured dog and say, “poo poo doggy” and giggle at our bad language. Not enlightened banter, but that came later, when he started texting to see if I’d read the Harry Potter series (“Yes! Don’t you wish you had a pet owl?”) or talking to him as a teen about his Outward Bound backcountry experience on a bus on the way to Red Rocks Amphitheater. It’s a privilege to watch a kid grow up, and to get to be a pal along the way. I’m lucky to be able to do it seven times—each of these kids has already brought so much joy to my life. Last year, I had no idea that Aunts and Uncles Day existed, and neither did our nephews and nieces or, as I’ve said, most of America. But I still got a ton of cards and presents from them on and around July 26, because on July 20, 2012, I donated a kidney to Uncle Bryan. Their outpouring of love and support was incredible. The kids and their parents sent us photo collages and a journal filled with fun memories, t-shirts with their hand prints, and poems they wrote for us, which I’ve since had laminated (descriptions of me included “yummy enchilada-maker” and “you make him smile.” You can’t get that with Hallmark!). Our goddaughter Maddy, eight at the time, made us a wall ornament of birds to hang in the hospital window so we’d know there were birds outside, waiting for us. And Morgan sent me lots of emails that summer to keep me in the loop—she finally went on the big roller coasters and loved them! I found out later that her mom had no idea she was checking in with me so much. The virtues and blessings of motherhood are often extolled—just spend 30 seconds on Facebook for proof. There are even moms who pity those of us who don’t have children, who think we’re missing out on a special relationship with a child. And that’s probably true. However, we aunties have our own special relationships with kids, ones we couldn’t have if we were parents. I wouldn’t trade mine for the world, so I’m anything but blue about missing out on those cards for Aunts and Uncles Day. Freelance journalist Jen Reeder dedicated her travel guidebook Adventure Guide: Hawaii the Big Island to her nieces and nephews. She is preparing to launch a nonprofit called Rock 1 Kidney to encourage kidney donation. Visit her online at jenreeder.com or rock1kidney.org.

xoxonikki Unexpected gifts are like tender embraces you didn't realize you needed. When I opened my mail to find a pillowcase embroidered with "Someone Somewhere Loves You" from an old friend, it made my week. I'm not good at surprise generosity, but I think it grows your soul to make those gestures. It seems like another way to say "Namaste"-I bow to the light in you.

Looking forward to: All the books I haven’t read. Should I commit to Game of Thrones? Fear of runny egg whites. Fear of white linen pants. Imagining someone in my attic. My illuminated Kindle screen. Glass of water. Bathroom.Water. Bathroom. Making up names for the dog I don’t own. Revisiting (the original) Brideshead Revisited. What’s killing the honeybees?

On Being with Krista Tippett (onbeing.org) is one of my top 5 favorite websites. This stunning photo appears on their Tumblr to illustrate a program with Jon Kabat-Zinn. The range of interviews, ideas, music, poetry and images incites me to go deeper and learn more. It’s an antidote to my spiritual laziness, a jolt of Red Bull for my brain.
I love New York magazine, but the stress of reading it mirrors the anxiety

of trying to keep up in the city of people cooler than you or me. I’m overwhelmed by all the restaurants I’ll never sample, the exhibits I’m missing, the shops I’ll never afford, the style I can never attain. As a Libra, my peace of mind suffers with too many options because I’ll bounce between them all and then want whatever I didn’t choose.
