It’s What We Do The Ultimate laser experience “There is a reason we are called Lowcountry Laserworks – laser is what we do, why we are here, and our primary purpose. While we do offer additional services and products, our focus is on providing advanced laser solutions for face and body using cutting-edge technology, ongoing expert training, and meticulous techniques to achieve unparalleled results and care. Our patients are involved, informed and demand the best.” a BoUtiqUe Practice “I practice old-fashioned medicine, with the focus entirely on you – all of you – during your consultation and procedures. We design your plan together, based on your goals and the most efficient way to achieve them, and we embark on your aesthetic journey as partners. Most often, this will be a long term relationship, as our patients become like family to us. The concept of Laserworks was created from the ground up, to offer a unique and individualized experience to discriminating clientele. We now offer a variety of optional services, upon request, that cater to those seeking an elevated level of care and convenience. The eye of an artist, training of a Doctor, and the hands of Both “For me it’s about customized care and treatments. I love what I do. What could be better than combining medical training with artistic skills to help people become what they want to be? This is my passion, and what drives me. From consultation through transformation, I strive to keep my patients comfortable and confident – in Laserworks, and, most importantly, in themselves.”

Dr. Angela Choi Running gives me the opportunity to push beyond my perceived limits, rejuvenate my energy and connect with something larger than myself. It’s a lot like my work as a physician. Women make more than 80% of all purchasing decisions.
December is one long anticipatory countdown. Opening the doors of an Advent calendar, being reminded that there are only X number of shopping days left, chanting backwards from 10 as the ball drops on the 31st. Counting down the days until we get to open our presents, have the best party ever, get a fresh start on life. I love the hopeful heart of December, but I loathe the day-after letdown. The leftover wrapping paper, the tinsel that suddenly looks tawdry, the forlorn balloons, the hangover from cheap Champagne. But most of all, I dread that flat-footed landing into real winter on January 1, the return to the reality of work, the optimistic list of resolutions I’ll gradually forget, the way nothing really seems to change except the date on the calendar. This year, though, I’m making only one resolution, and I’m determined to work on it every day. Carpe diem, baby! I’m guilty of living backwards and forwards, but never now. Lists of things to do tomorrow, shame about a mistake I made in the past, a hundred worries about things that may never come to pass. In a month that’s all about looking forward, I desperately need to learn to live in the house of now. I’ve read dozens of articles about being in the present moment, but never really practice it. Instead I rush through the grocery, let my mind skip to “next” during a conversation and generally try to force my life to happen like I’d force bulbs to bloom out of season. And just in case I backslide, I probably need to have it tattooed on my hand like an indelible message or prescription from the universe: Now, Nikki, now.
Women control 2/3 of the nation’s disposable income.

The culmination of a year is bittersweet. There’s the happy retrospective checklist of adventures: passport stamps, late nights with new friends, long weekends with old ones, 365 days of general wonderment at our slowly spinning planet. On the other hand, the impending realization that another year has flown by—I could swear it’s April or so—leaves me dumbfounded. Suddenly we’re in a countdown to a new year that’s a startling sight in my daily planner. Next year I’ll try my best to keep count of the days, but more than likely you can count on the fact that in twelve months I’ll be just as shocked that we’ve come to the end again. Two gals who can keep time though, might need to be consulted in the meantime: Kim and Elizabeth keep us on track. Whether it’s a beat or a lap, these women keep time—they keep us dancing, they keep us running, they keep us nodding along with the reality of one day after another, one week followed by another, one more month, and eventually a whole year is swept away in a single second. Three, two, one...Here we go again. Margaret

40 Effed Up Things About Being 40
featuring
After a few years of not being able to read the fine print (apologies to my kid for the guess-the-dose Infant Advil), I broke down and bought my first pair of reading glasses. At the drug store counter, it was like the reverse of a teen nervously buying condoms. “First pair of reading glasses,” I informed the clerk, just to prove that I’m not at all embarrassed. “My mom wears those,” she smiled. And now I’m mortified. Here are 40 other effed up things about being 40: 1. Other than Teen Mom, I have no clue what’s on MTV. 2. When people say “middle-aged,” they might mean me. 3. I can’t wear sequins or I’ll look like a cougar.
$65.00 75 minutes
4. I’m more likely to forget to have sex than to forget to floss.
(regularly $85)
5. If I eat chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, I’ve gained a size by dinnertime. 6. Even if I finally get a full night’s sleep, I still look like I was up all night. But not up all night doing something cool.
FA C I A L S WAXING MASSAGE
7. At the doctor’s office, I bypass Cosmopolitan and reach for Redbook. I’ll even read Family Circle. There are some great recipes in there. 8. I’m probably never going to be a Solid Gold Dancer. 9. Going out without makeup is beginning to seem more and more like an aggressive act. 10. The “me” in my head is like the foxy little sister of the “me” in the mirror. 11. Any girl can look cute like Rachel on Friends in her 20s. Only Jen Aniston looks cute like Rachel on Friends in her 40s. 12. If I strolled across a college campus, people would assume teacher, not student. (Upside: instant PhD!) 13. I’m old enough to drink, vote, rent a car and be elected to the highest office in the land. All that’s left on my age bucket list is admission to the AARP. Thanks, I’ll wait. 14. Most days, I choose comfort over style. I’m a traitor to my stilettos. 15. All the tanning I did in college is showing up now as brown blotches. Get a Sharpie and you could draw a cow on my chest. 16. The Psychedelic Furs, Duran Duran and The Cure are now considered oldies. 17. Everything I wore in high school has been appropriated ironically by hipsters. 18. Only a fortysomething is old enough to remember the TV show Thirtysomething. More irony. 19. Oooh, my back. 20. Other than the Kardashians, I don’t recognize anyone in the tabloids. Who are these people and why are they famous?

21. Ages 31-39 are a total blur. I’m scared I’ll blink and be 200. 22. All of sudden my tight mini-skirts make me look like I’m trying too hard. Hey sluts, incoming at Goodwill! 23. Uhhh, my back. 24. The Real Housewives and I are, like, the same age. Where’s my butler? 25. It’s occurring to me that I might not ever visit every single beach on the planet, and I’m actually okay with that, which feels weird. 26. When I flirt with the cable guy, I don’t get extra channels for free anymore. 27. I still think 21-year-old guys are hot. And they’re like, “Mom?” 28. Why didn’t I take naked pictures of myself when I was 30? 29. I fantasize about taping up the sides of my face. Try it with your fingers— it takes 10 years off instantly. 30. Cripes, my back. 31. Touching my toes is not a guarantee. 32. Forget Fifty Shades of Grey—my nightstand is full of wrinkle cream and Bengay. The apothecary is open! 33. I even have one of those days-of-the-week vitamin boxes. 34. If I buy a turtle it might outlive me. 35. The bad habits I still have are probably here to stay. 36. I say things like, “What’s the name of that actor, you know, he was in that thing?” 37. I get a hangover from looking at liquor. 38. The next milestone birthday is 50. 39. Did I mention my reading glasses? 40. One word: “Ma’am.” Amy Wruble is the author of carriagebeforemarriage.com, named a Babble Top 100 Mom Blog. Jonathan Miller has made Sammy into a star. The creator of The Adventures of Sammy the Wonder Dachshund covets bold colors. He takes 30 to 40 hours to build each illustration in his children’s books by cutting and layering paper. “I want all of my pictures to be as architecturally sound as possible.” Jonathan visits schools weekly to share his art and read aloud about Sammy, who works for the Internet as a fact-checker. “I think it’s important for kids to develop imagination and creativity for all aspects of life when they get older.” Jonathan reinserted imagination into his own life. After years of unfulfilling jobs, he says, “It’s very important to me that I do something that’s different every day.” Lately he’s excited about the appearance of his artwork in the Blue Bicycle Books display window, on a billboard, and on the 2013 Turkey Day Run T-shirts. “I’m like a little kid on Christmas.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “I like the size and format and design of the magazine.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “It’s definitely a better experience than the last time I wore a skirt…”

Chill Champagne for 45 minutes in a bucket of ice to reach
Instead of the usual wine and cheese holiday party, invite friends to a Pink Champagne blind tasting party to get ready for New Year’s Eve.You’ll need plenty of glasses for sampling and four different brands of bubbly placed in bags labeled A through D. Have everyone take notes and cast their votes, and then do the big reveal. Serve mini Shortbread Cheesecakes for an impressive yet easy accompaniment. Let’s have a toast for the hostess!
the ideal serving temperature.
Crust: 2 cups of crumbled shortbread cookies 1/2 cup of melted butter 1/3 cups sugar Combine and press into the bottoms of the cup. Refrigerate to set.

Add milk and beat until smooth. Stir in lemon juice, vanilla and brandy. Top with shaved chocolate and a dusting of nutmeg
Have all the ingredients (cream cheese and liquids) at room temperature before blending.
Walkers Shortbread is made using only four ingredients: flour, butter, sugar and salt.
AND THE WINNER IS:

And still, still, no deals in Washington to halt the insanity of gun violence, which continues to massacre children and women and people in every corner and community of our country.

wenty-five tiny doors, each with a tiny number in the bottom right corner. My eyesight is so decrepit now that I wouldn’t be able to find, much less read, the numbers without my Dollar Store cheaters, but I remember the fun of searching for the next one, as the doors weren’t sequentially ordered but scattered in a random shuffle across the Advent calendar we pulled out every year when I was growing up. Today you can find Advent calendars in all shapes, sizes, and flavors— from the $2 version concealing 25 waxy chocolate squares at Trader Joe’s, to a Harry Potter-themed Christmas Countdown, a Zombie Advent Calendar, or heaven forbid, a Duck Dynasty “Behind the Blind” version. The Advent calendar we used when I was a girl was a traditional religious theme. I don’t recall what the outer image was—the surface picture when the 25 doors were nestled snug in their doorframes—surely it had snowy trees and windows glazed by golden candlelight. But I do remember the slow reveal of the various manger characters as they emerged from their hiding places. A cardboard game of peek-a-boo. The animals were first in the line-up—the blank-stare cow, the droopy-eared donkey—filling the first week or two of December before things got serious. Then you knew you were closing in on Christmas when, hallelujah, the people started appearing behind those little doors. The whack-a-mole month of December calls for this, the tangible marking of days, the small daily act of opening and looking, of hopeful expecting, of welcoming. The month hits me fast and hard amid the growing darkness that closes in as we tilt further from our planetary star. I am perpetually behind, slipping and sliding. I need this anchoring by a calendar, this affirmation, even if only by opening flimsy rectangles to reveal standard-issue shepherds and angels. This small acknowledgement that each new day holds some silly surprise. But this December, on whatever calendar we are using to count the days until we cross the Christmas finish line, there’s a door we do not want to open. The door marked December 14. The day no one wants to remember. The day no one can forget.
Smack in the middle of this year’s holiday fa-la-la, around the time we better be making our lists and checking them twice, we will face a horrific list. The list of names of 20 very young children from Newtown, Connecticut, whose stockings will not be hung this Christmas. This list of names only begins to enumerate the depth of loss and outrage that will stir our collective conscience, like snowglobe snow in a blinding, furious whirl, assuming it would ever dissipate. We will again face the bitter bewilderment that we can send children to school with their backpacks packed and homework mostly done, their turkey sandwiches spread with just the right amount of mustard and mayo, give them a quick kiss on the cheek, only to have them gunned down. Behind the little calendar door marked #14, our national shame will come bolting out, rampant, angry and unwieldy, like rapid shoppers on Black Friday, only last year on that mid-December day it was the blackest of all Black Fridays, with no deals to be had. And still, still, no deals in Washington to halt the insanity of gun violence, which continues to massacre children and women and people in every corner and community of our country. So what do we do this bleak mid-December when every news outlet will replay the horror and tragedy, and pundits will put their spin on the enduring dismay that such horror not only can happen here, but did. Only eleven days before Christmas, at Sandy Hook. I have no spin. I have only deep sadness and the slimmest bit of hope. It is a sandy hope, shifting like the beaches not far from my home, washing away, retreating, then eventually returning and accreting, often farther down shore. It is a solstice hope, an acknowledgement of darkness and shadow, of bare tree limbs and broken hearts, but also, too, of the hushed promise of candlelight. It is an Advent hope, that behind these small daily doors waiting to be opened, some glimmer of sense and humanity will prevail. Our December now includes Newtown, but it still also includes that very old Old Town, the one called Bethlehem, the ancient town that rose out of shepherds’ fields before there were schools in lockdown mode, before government buildings braced behind concrete bunkers, before there were AK-47s free-flowing in our streets. And there, the story goes, there was a stable that had no doors. It was open to all. Lowly animals, field workers, unwed mothers, hungry babies, questing kings. And above the stable, a star—nature’s mysterious beacon of hope. That was what was always behind door #24, a star. Best I can remember.

10 Resolutions I Won’t Make Lose weight. (LMAO—the only way that will happen.) Start running. (Only if someone is chasing me.) Run for office. (If I won, I’d be a politician.) Learn French. (I already know how to say “how much?”) Become a morning person. (Nothing fun happens in the am.) Get off Facebook. (The narcissism is like digital crack.) Eat more kale. (I’m waiting for the kale pill.) Swim with dolphins. (Oh my god, leave them alone!) Read Lean In. (Even the book jacket made me tired.) View the glass as half full. (Only if it’s half full of wine.)

Your Neighbor. Two words that sum up one of ABC News 4’s big commitments in 2013. This year, our Your Neighbor series had us packing up and hitting the road to profile cities and towns in the Lowcountry.

ur anchors Dean Stephens and Victoria Hansen shook the hands of neighbors from as far out as Walterboro and as close to home as Mount Pleasant. We listened as they shared stories, humbly bragged about their kids, and made sure we knew the best places to eat or just spend time in their towns.
It gave us an opportunity to get to know our neighbors. Breaking down that tv screen that separates us, and for those communities to get a sense of what it takes to broadcast every night into their homes.
ABC News 4’s Dean Stephens and Victoria Hansen talk to regulars at Hiott’s Pharmacy in Walterboro before our live Your Neighbor broadcast.
One of our favorite Your Neighbor specials took place in the small community of McClellanville. We setup at a park on the water right at sunset. The kids and their parents came out to say hi, shake hands and some of the kids even ended up on our newscast! For a moment the cameras disappeared, the pressures of a live broadcast faded away and all that was left was the laughter and enjoyment of those around us. That’s what Your Neighbor is all about. And we look forward to 2014 and our commitment to showcasing the Lowcountry and all the amazing people in it.

Kim Larson keeps the beat. Time is a tempo for the drummer and guitarist of SouthernFemisphere. Kim didn’t touch the drums until she was 22—her friend left his drum set at her house, she tried it out and it struck a chord. “It’s a really thriving thing and you have to use your whole body to play the instrument so you’re physically involved in the song.” She works as a lower elementary Montessori teacher by day and, by night, rehearses with her local band of two years. They started as a Weezer cover band and have moved on to writing their own music to perform, most often at the Tin Roof. “This is a very accessible thing; it’s not like you have to be a professional musician.” As a co-founder of Girls Rock Charleston, the musician/songwriter encourages young girls to explore their rhythmic originality as well. “It’s really important to have a way to make yourself heard.”

Elizabeth Smith is always on time. Elizabeth doesn’t race the clock—she sets it. “My equipment is 99.9 percent accurate on a bad day.” The director of timing and registration services at Set Up Events, a race and triathlon production company, starts her workday dash before dawn to calibrate software and devices for races along the eastern seaboard. “When it’s actually race morning I’m a go-to for catastrophes.” She’s also in charge of registration data, social media, sponsorship and sales, and has worked events like the Run for Adela Beach 5K and a kids’ triathlon at I’On. Her path tracks back to studying sports management and interning with her current company. Before she graduated college, Elizabeth emailed her boss, who responded within 10 minutes with a full-time offer. When she’s not clocking in, Elizabeth keeps the clock in check with cups of coffee and spurts of CrossFit until the next race. “Timing has always been a really fun puzzle.”

xoxonikki December is the month for hanging twinkle lights inside and out, for hurrying home to porch lights at dusk before night falls, for candlelight that smells of fir or wood smoke, for stargazing and sunsets blazing, for huddling around a fire pit or a fireplace, for trees strung with multi-colored bulbs, for making light while we wait for the sun.

Why is my 3rd eye out of focus? Choosing perfect presents. Realizing I’ll fail at the above. Do I have a spirit animal? Netflix streaming…open all night. The amount of $$ I spend on books. Can I justify a Jambox? No more Starbucks holiday gingerbread?! Why is my couch like a bed of nails? Just one more game of Word Warp before sleep.

Ignitelight.tumblr.com is the blog of a wonderful (anonymous) photographer, and it’s filled with all sorts of images—hers and others— and memorable quotes. I’m like a magpie collecting inspiration, and when I go through her archives, I nearly hyperventilate at the beauty.
I still devour the New York Times every Sunday, but their recent T Magazine on Luxury made me realize how little patience I have for excess lately. Italian countesses who rent an extra apartment for their clothes. A raccoon purse for little girls for $450. Hotels with sheets that equal my mortgage. Maybe T should be called Let Them Eat Cake.
