Cycling Holidays 2018

Welcome to BSpoke Cycling Holidays. Discover. Explore. Relax... Exploring the world by bicycle is a wonderful thing. Cruising along a coastal path with the sea breeze on your face. Winding through sunny vineyards, the promise of wine at your next stop. Pedalling gently beside the river until a lovely restaurant beckons you for lunch. Hopping off to explore an ancient village or a vibrant town. Exploring by bike is the perfect way to get right to the heart of a place, with the freedom to stop whenever you choose. And because you can travel at entirely your own pace (be it lively or lazy), our holidays can be as restful as they are adventurous.

NEW FOR 2018

Who are BSpoke holidays for? Anyone who's relatively healthy, fit and loves to pedal or potter at their own pace. Families, couples, friends, solo travellers... we work for everyone. Spend eight days cycling from one place to the next, staying somewhere different each day or so. Or book a Single Centre holiday and explore one lovely spot for a week. Glide down river on a Bike & Boat holiday, or cruise effortlessly up the hills on an e-bike tour. We offer lots of different options across Europe - tailor-made to suit you.

You set the pace, we do the rest BSpoke holidays are all about exploring entirely at your own pace. And because our portfolio now includes Cycling for Softies tours, you can choose an even more leisurely holiday if you wish. Because we take care of all the details (accommodation, transfers, suggested route maps and luggage transfers from hotel to hotel) you can travel easy, with nothing weighing you (or your bike) down. Plenty of our holidays include flights too - and for those that don't, we will happily arrange your travel if you'd like us to.

Delicious food, great accommodation Whether you choose a BSpoke Classic holiday, a Cycling for Softies holiday or a Single Centre break, you'll enjoy fantastic accommodation at one of our hand-picked hotels, selected for their character and friendly welcome. And when you're not cycling or exploring the local area on foot? There are all sorts of wonderful places to indulge in the regional cuisine. Fresh fish in the Algarve. The tastiest French cheese. The finest Spanish paella. And of course there's the local wine to sample...

Ride With GPS We now have routes for all Original Tours available to download onto your phone before departure with the Ride With GPS app. In addition to your maps and route notes, you can follow or listen to route directions as you travel. Please ask our experts for further details.

Cycling for Softies now included in BSpoke This year we're pleased to offer Cycling for Softies tours (formerly a separate brand) under the BSpoke umbrella. Those who have booked with Cycling for Softies in the past will enjoy exactly the same level of service as before. And the emphasis for Softies holidays is still very much on enjoying a blissfully lazy pace, fabulous evening meals (and plenty of delicious dining options during the day), wonderful wine at every turn, and comfortable accommodation. A Day in the Life... Have you ever wondered what a typical day on a cycle tour is like? Look no further. We’ve mapped out one below based on one of our most popular French tours. Of course, this is subject to how often you’d like to stop to take in the stunning views, tour more than one vineyard or indulge in an extra-long lunch stop…

Start with a delicious breakfast Enjoy an energising breakfast of croissants, fruit, fresh juice and coffee at your hotel - perfect fuel for the day ahead.

NIN

G

Enjoy a rewarding lunch Time to re-fuel with a delicious lunch somewhere on route that takes your fancy. Grab a tasty sandwich from an alluring deli, or take your time over a long, lazy meal with a glass of wine. It's entirely up to you.

Stop somewhere lovely for coffee After an envigorating ride, enjoy a mid-morning coffee or cold drink at a café with a view - perhaps al fresco by the river in a quaint little village, or in a bustling medieval town square.

6

Discover. Explore. Relax.

Arrive at your next hotel After another lovely afternoon's cycling (perhaps along a river trail, a forest path or winding along quiet country lanes), arrive at your next hotel, where your luggage will be waiting. Park your bike, freshen up and enjoy a drink at the bar.

TAKE AN EVENING STROLL

WANDER BACK, RELAX, SOCIALISE AND SLEEP...

Explore something amazing It might be an ancient castle or a famous cathedral. Perhaps a sundappled vineyard (with a wine-tasting, of course), or simply a wander around a historical city. Do a bit of boutique shopping, swim in a lake, sunbathe in a meadow... whatever you feel like doing.

Indulge in a fabulous dinner Dine at your hotel, or take a short walk to your preferred restaurant. Enjoy wonderful regional cuisine washed down with a cool beer or a glass of wine.

"I had a memorable time in the lovely Loire with my daughter. Great bikes, beautiful scenery, interesting châteaux to visit en route, my favourite of which was L'ilisette near Azay le Rideau." Ms Wylam Speak to an expert on 020 7471 7750 or for more information, please visit www.bspoketours.com

BSPOKE CLASSIC

Perfumes of Provence From vivid purple lavender to sunflowers, emerald rivers and red cliffs, Provence is rich with colour. The light here is dazzling too - no wonder so many artists have painted the region’s varying vistas. This route takes you into the Luberon hills through lush green valleys and ancient villages. With a sublime Mediterranean climate on tap, Provence is renowned for its speciality, dry rosé wine. And the food is wonderful too.

Don’t miss... Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, home to a striking emerald-green lagoon borne out of a powerful spring Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, home to some of Van Gogh’s finest work Dining at ‘Philip’ in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse: amazing food with a view to die for

“A low stress and relaxing way to eat and drink your way around France.” Mr Purnell 12

Discover. Explore. Relax.

Cycle Tour (8 days/7 nights) DAY 1 Arrive at Avignon, Nîmes or Marseille and transfer to your base hotel in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. DAY 2 Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Explore Saint-Rémy-deProvence, a beautiful town of narrow streets and historical buildings. Its enviable setting amongst lush green valleys is part of what drew many artists here, including Van Gogh. If you’d like to cycle today, we suggest venturing across exquisite landscape to the village of Baux-de-Provence. From its wondrous stone fortress perched high on a rocky plateau, the views of the Alpilles are superb. Another hidden gem located a few miles away is the beautiful village of Eygalières. DAY 3 Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse: 25 miles (40km). Enjoy a beautiful scenic ride along quiet lanes through sleepy villages. The route crosses the River Vaucluse at Cavaillon, an attractive town renowned for its delicious melons - visit the fruit market to sample for yourself.

DAY 6 Roussillon. Time to explore Roussillon, a charming village situated at the foot of the Monts de Vaucluse. Roussillon is famous for its magnificent red cliffs and ochre quarries, rich reds and yellows contrasting with lush green pine trees and the vivid blue sky. In the afternoon we suggest cycling to the nearby village of Bonnieux. Built on a plateau above the valley, the views from here are amazing. At the top of 86 stone steps is the “Vieille Eglise”. Up here amongst the cedar trees you can see Gordes and Roussillon in the distance. DAY 7 Roussillon to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: 34 miles (54km). Your final day takes you back to Saint-Rémy-deProvence, on part of the Luberon cycle route along the lower contours of the Luberon Mountains National Park. Winding your way through magnificent scenery, you’ll find yourself in Oppède Le Vieux, another historic village. Next, Ménerbes, an archeologically fascinating village, inhabited since pre-historic times. Ancient houses have been lovingly restored, making it yet another lovely village to wander around, stopping to admire the imposing citadel. Finally, relax back in Saint-Rémyde-Provence with a glass or two of rosé on your last night before returning home the following morning.

DAY 4 Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Potter around this lovely village, heading to its huge emerald spring situated at the foot of a cliff towering 230m high. Next, we suggest hopping on your bike and cycling to L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Hugged by the river Sorgue on all sides, it’s known as the ‘island city’, carved up by canals. Or, if you want to paddle rather than pedal, you could opt to book a canoe trip to L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. DAY 5 Fontaine-de-Vaucluse to Roussillon: 23 miles (37km). Journey into the heart of the Luberon, stopping off at Gordes, one of the region’s most beautiful villages, perched on the southern edge of the high Plateau de Vaucluse. At its summit lies an ancient castle overlooking the hills of the Luberon. The Abbey of Senanque is a must see here - still home to Cistercian monks who make honey, lavender essence, and liqueurs.

Cycle Tour (8 days/7 nights) DAY 1 Arrive at Tours or Blois and transfer to your base hotel in Blois. We suggest enjoying a wander through the old town's medieval streets towards its impressive renaissance château. DAY 2 Round trip to Château de Chambord: 26 miles (42km). Head inland on your bike today to meet the river Cosson for a flat run to the Château de Chambord. Magnificent when viewed from afar, with huge features that capture its striking reflection, it's also well worth a closer inspection on a tour around this spectacular castle. You can then enjoy a gentle ride back to Blois along the river. DAY 3 Blois to Amboise: 27 miles (44km). Enjoy another leisurely ride along the Loire, crossing the smaller Beauvron river before reaching your halfway point at Chaumont-surLoire. The return to Villandry takes you through picturesque orchards and vineyards. DAY 7 Villandry to Saumur: 39 miles (63km). A lovely longer ride for your final day, cruising along the riverside for the first half, passing by Château d’Ussé, the inspiration for Charles Perrault’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’. “This was an absolutely fantastic trip, all four of our group had a great time, so many good memories and experiences. Luxury and excitement in one hassle-free package!" Mrs Firth 30

Cycle Tour (8 days/7 nights) DAY 1 Arrive at Tours, Poitiers or Rennes and transfer to the beautiful medieval town of Chinon, set on the banks of the majestic Vienne river. Steeped in history, the town was once King Henry II’s preferred place of residence. You can still explore the impressive 12th century Plantagenet fortress, which was also home to Richard the Lionheart. DAY 2 Château du Rivau and Rigny-Ussé. Once you’re ready to explore beyond Chinon, we suggest a round trip route to the Château du Rivau (19 miles/25km), a fairy-tale castle with beautiful gardens, botanical art and sculpture. The small village of Rigny-Ussé boasts another ancient dwelling - the magnificent Château d’Ussé - as well as amazing views of the Loire from its location on the edge of the Chinon forest. DAY 3 Chinon to Montsoreau: 13 miles (21km). Today you will follow the scenic Loire à Vélo cycle route which meanders along the river to the charming old riverside town of Montsoreau, often referred to as the ‘most beautiful village in France’. Along the way we recommend stopping at Fontevraud Abbey: a prison in Napoleon’s day, and now a historical site, music and exhibition venue. DAY 4 Saumur and Brézé. Today we suggest a day trip to Saumur (17 miles/28km), a beautiful town with a typically imposing château overlooking the river. Explore its wondrous wine cellars, wander down medieval streets, and enjoy feeling spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to dine. Alternatively, you could cycle to Château de Brézé, another fine example of a classic French castle in the heart of the wine land, complete with underground tunnels and wine presses still in use today.

Cycling along the Loire to the River Indre, you’ll come to a beautiful medieval village; home to Château d’Azay-leRideau, built on an island in the river. Azay-le-Rideau is a lovely place to stay for a couple of nights, with wonderful cafés and restaurants to peruse, and plenty of historical buildings to admire as you wander the old streets. DAY 6 Château Villandry. After relaxing in Azay le Rideau for a while, you might like to visit the Renaissance Château Villandry. The castle itself has been beautifully restored, but it's the gardens that are truly spectacular - from the lovingly nurtured vegetable garden to the impeccable terraced gardens of striking hedge-work and colourful flowers. A great spot for a picnic lunch. DAY 7 Azay-le-Rideau to Chinon: 14 miles (23km). Your final day in the saddle will take you back to Chinon, where you can pick up some souvenirs, wander the banks of the river, and enjoy a glass of the finest local wine in the dappled sun. We recommend visiting the famous Bayeux Tapestry or the Commonwealth War Museum. DAY 2 Bayeux round trip: 23 miles (36km). Your first day of cycling is a round trip route which starts by heading north west to Omaha beach, well known as one of the World War II D-Day Normandy landing beaches.
