W
elcome to summer in vibrant Steamboat Springs. This historic Rocky Mountain Shangri La offers much to experience. The Yampa Valley is known for its multitude of recreational activities and endless outdoor adventures. The same immensity exists within our arts and culture community. I invite you to experience the physical environment as well as the visual and mental offerings that make Steamboat such an exciting summer destination. A recent lyric from the musical group “Foxes” proclaims, “Don’t tell me our youth is running out, it’s only just begun.” This simple yet optimistic mantra seems to be in the Yampa Valley winds these days. It speaks less of age and more of youthful energy. Our artistic community has a longstanding history of pioneers and supporters who

have grasped that energy and put it to good use. This summer, the Depot is showcasing local artists’ current forays into their genres, as well as engaging contemporary exhibitions utilizing new media and technology. MONTECARLO, a multidisciplinary, artistic collective presents contemporary art at the beginning of summer, followed by “Summer Art: Artist Member Show,” an
annual show featuring works by members of the Arts Council. It is with great reverence to the progressive artistic minds that built this community and an excitement for the cultural experiences that await you, that the Steamboat Springs Arts Council and I welcome you! Cover Artist – Maggie Fleming Mitchell By Amanda DeVos
E
Vocative of juicestained Popsicle sticks, the featured cover artwork, “Woven Composition 1,” by Maggie Fleming Mitchell captivates viewers with its interlacing, deep-summer colors. Mitchell typically enjoys working with acrylics and mixed media, but this time she simply wanted to try her hands at a new technique. The artwork is an original watercolor monotype created through the printmaking process. “I wanted to try to make a piece that looked like it was woven,” says Mitchell. The simple, weaving pattern was made through a complex process. Mitchell painted the watercolors onto vellum and then used stencils to make the colors overlap but prevent them from bleeding into each other, before having the composition impressed onto paper. The result combines the soft beauty of watercolor with the precision of printmaking. “It looks like a watercolor, but you could

never make it just by painting. The reason it works is because of the printmaking,” explains Mitchell. Mitchell and her husband, Rob, came to Steamboat Springs in 2004. She received a fine arts degree in textile design from East Carolina University, and her passion for industry has led her to a career as a designer of knit socks. This form of art is what she describes as her true “bread and butter.” Mitchell works in a studio on Lincoln Avenue above Lyon’s Drugstore as a part of the Make Studio Artist Collective. Painting remains more of a hobby for Mitchell, but it is a vehicle of spontaneous exploration and contemporary expression in her life. For more information, contact her at fleming.maggie@gmail.com.

n many ways, Reginald “Rex” Gill’s life confirmed Thoreau’s argument that human beings have a profound capacity for self-reliance. The New Zealand native tackled endeavors ranging from designing the Emerald Mountain chairlift to climbing 153,300 feet in just one year. Most notably, Gill was a talented poet and photographer whose work strings together an entire narrative on the geographic obscurities of Northwest Colorado. Rex Gill arrived in Steamboat in 1918, captivated but undaunted by the rugged Colorado landscape. His passion for mountaineering was unparalleled — he often climbed alone, unable to find climbing companions whose resolve matched his own. Although he never graduated high school, he acquired an exhaustive knowledge of the surrounding area through photographing Northwest Colorado.

Gill’s ingenuity enabled him to eventually construct his own dark room inside an old camper trailer. Once his photographs were developed, he delighted in sharing his work with other members of the community. In addition to being a photographer, Gill was a painter, musician, poet, engineer, builder, mechanic, explorer, outdoorsmen and mountaineer, making him a modernday Renaissance man. The Tread of Pioneers Museum is reintroducing Gill’s work to Steamboat. In collaboration with East West Frame Shop, the museum has conserved Gill’s work through photographic enlargements and digital copies. The exhibit, entitled “The Man, The
Mountains, The Desert,” peers into the lens of Gill’s camera, showcasing the unbridled beauty of early Northwest Colorado. The exhibit is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Tread of Pioneers Museum at eighth and Oak streets. For more information, call (970) 879-2214.

entoring young artists, nurturing novices and showcasing the pros: the Center for Visual Arts is a vibrant example of the scope of artistic talent in Steamboat Springs. Now in its fourth year, CVA is all about what’s new: the nonprofit community arts center has a new home, a new program director, new summer workshops and new names on its membership roster. After remodeling in early summer, CVA moved to 837 Lincoln Ave. on July 1. Not only does the new gallery showcase artwork in an inviting, professional setting but it also facilitates workshops, critiques, lectures and other programming. “We’re a 12-month-a-year artist members’ show,” says executive director Linda Laughlin. More than 30 local and regional Colorado artists show their work at CVA. Because

it is a non-juried gallery, artists without a proven record of commercial appeal have an opportunity to exhibit their work. “We aim to strike an appealing balance of media and level of artistic development. The only thing limiting the number of artists we can accept is the amount of wall space. There is never enough!” Laughlin says. Artist and instructor M.B. Warner plays a pivotal role at CVA this summer. She is teaching art classes, “Mondays with MB,” a four-week series of oil and acrylic painting workshops for beginning students and artists who want to hone their knowledge of the principles of art. “It’s for anyone who has always wanted to try their hand at painting. We want to help them take that first creative step.” Laughlin says. Also this summer, emerging artists who would like their work critiqued, or would just like some helpful suggestions, can stop by CVA at lunchtime on Mondays to get free advice and technical direction. These new programs, along with CVA’s ongoing emerging artist and mentoring programs, are under the direction of Rachel Radetsky, who joined the staff as its only paid employee last spring. Although no one was really excited about having to move when CVA’s former home sold last spring, it’s all working out for the best, Laughlin says. Reduced overhead was one factor that allowed the center to expand its programming. “This is all good,” Laughlin explains. Depot Hosts Multimedia Exhibit By Amanda DeVos
A
feeling of lonely hopefulness, with a cynical, humorous twist. This is the spirit the MONTECARLO artist collective shares in its artwork at the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts at the Depot this summer. This contemporary, multimedia exhibit features the artwork of four friends who first met at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2005: Kate Learson, Siobhan Feehan, Park Myers and Vanessa Gogliettino. They planned and created their work separately from across the country, but according to Feehan, when they reunited in Steamboat this spring to assemble the show, it came together easily. “It all pieces together this vision of an analog dystopia – lots of versions of boring, useless information but all with a sense of humor, of course, because otherwise it wouldn’t be MONTECARLO; it would just be life,” Feehan says.

Feehan made a three-part body of work that explored the strategies to overcome obstacles: over, under or through. Myers’ piece examines the definitions of fear. Learson’s work handles the colorful utopia of Lisa Frank. Gogliettino created collages that merge polar opposites. The artwork is a tangible representation of trying to move through life. Encountering the contrast of media – video installations, photographs, paintings, plexiglass hangings and paper documents – leaves one with a sense of unpredictability, mystery and challenges. “MONTECARLO hopes to engage the viewer in a playful conversation about youthful restlessness, overcoming obstacles and the lonely space that one can find themselves in when trying to figure out what to do next,” says Myers, who is also the artistic director for the Steamboat Springs Arts Council. wenty-five years ago, over 100 people crowded together on the deck of the Steamboat Athletic Club to witness the birth of Steamboat’s classical music scene. For Kay Clagett, Strings Music Festival co-founder, the turnout drastically exceeded her expectations: “We were hoping for 40 to 50 people to come and then 150 showed up. Since then, we’ve never looked back.” Clagett and her partner, Betse Grassby, joined forces with world-renowned cellist, John Sant’Ambrogio, and together they

introduced the community to a classical music festival. Since the creation of Strings in 1988, the festival has expanded both the size and range of its audience. From the crowded deck of the Steamboat Athletic Club to the 500-person tent in the Torian Plum Plaza and finally to its permanent residence in the architecturally stunning $9 million pavilion, Strings has procured a lasting yet ever-evolving, legacy. “In spite of Strings’ evolution and expansion, we have maintained a loyal core group of people who have been a part of the Strings audience from the beginning,” says Cristin Frey, Strings advertising and marketing director.
Although it has sustained its classical base, the festival now incorporates different genres of music in its “Different Tempo” series. This summer’s impressive lineup includes country music singersongwriter Lee Ann Womack, trumpeter Chris Botti and Canadian singersongwriter k.d. lang. The success of Strings is undoubtedly a product of both community support and staff dedication. Strings celebrates its 25th anniversary as an organization that has revolutionized and inspired Steamboat’s music scene.
