The Western Side of Steamboat Springs
B
efore it was a mecca of adventure sports, daily life in Steamboat Springs revolved around the Western way of life: ranching and living off the land. That Western spirit can be experienced through the following activities. Start off your day in true cowboy fashion, on horseback. Many ranches in the Steamboat area offer guided horseback rides, and skills are not a requirement – everyone from seasoned riders to city slickers are welcome. Individuals, couples, families and groups can take tours as short as an hour, or make a day of it. See page VG 47 for horseback ride options. Lace up your hiking boots, shrug on a backpack and go for a cool morning hike. A low-impact no-brainer is the quarter-mile hike to Fish Creek Falls, just 4 miles from downtown Steamboat in Fish Creek Canyon. The roaring waters of the 280-foot falls VG 12 | ONLINE AT WWW.STEAMBOATCHAMBER.COM
make them one of the most popular local landmarks. Then for more of a challenge, continue along the trail to Upper Fish Creek Falls and Long Lake. Other easy, nearby hikes include Emerald Mountain and Spring Creek. If you’re looking for an adventurous hike, trek through the Mount Zirkel Wilderness in North Routt County or the Flat Tops in South Routt County. Or, for the most hardcore hikers, travel along a section of the Continental Divide Trail – Steamboat Springs was designated an official CDT Gateway Community in 2018. See page VG 55 for a list of Forest Service trails. Take a breather in the afternoon with a visit to the Tread of Pioneers Museum, a treasure trove of Steamboat’s Western history. Housed in a 1901 Queen Anne-style Victorian home, the museum’s exhibits shed light on everything Northwest Colorado,
including Native Americans, skiers, ranchers, miners and pioneers. The Western Heritage Exhibit even tells the tales of local figures like the infamous outlaw Harry Tracy. Once you’re done exploring Steamboat’s Western roots, grab a fishing pole and cast a line at one of Steamboat’s many fishing spots. Fishing the Yampa River has long been a favorite pastime in the Yampa Valley, and anglers can cast for trout along several miles of public access. Looking for something more secluded? Travel south to Stagecoach Reservoir, or north to Steamboat Lake State Park or Pearl Lake. Don’t sweat it if you’re not a pro; Steamboat’s fishing outfitters offer guided trips and equipment rentals. See page VG 47 for a list of fishing outfitters. Northwest Colorado has some of the best hunting in the nation, and many local ranches and outfitters facilitate guided or non-guided hunting trips. Use a bow, muzzleloader or rifle to hunt elk, deer, moose or mountain lions on a wide variety of terrain. Ensure proper licensure prior to your hunt, and contact the Department of Wildlife for additional information and hunting season dates. Find a full list of hunting guides and outfitters on page VG 47. On Friday and Saturday evenings through July and August, find exciting rodeo events at

n Friday and Saturday nights in July and August, the roar of the crowd, the glow of arena lights and the aroma of barbecue attract competitors and spectators to Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs. At Brent Romick Rodeo Arena, cowboys and cowgirls compete in a long-held Western tradition: the rodeo. The arena is right across the Yampa River from downtown Steamboat Springs, at Fifth Street and Howelsen Parkway in the Howelsen Hill Sports Complex. The history of the rodeo in Steamboat Springs goes back well over a century, as this was a cow town long before locals strapped on skis and took to the slopes. Ranching was – and for many in the Yampa Valley, still is – a way of life, and the skills needed for ranch work form the basis of rodeo competitions. Before the weekly rodeo began in the ‘70s, Routt County locals would hold rodeo events wherever space would allow – sometimes even on downtown Lincoln Avenue. Today, the Steamboat Rodeo keeps this long-held tradition alive. Rodeo events at the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series include bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing. With rodeo clowns hamming it up and calf and ram scrambles between events, there’s plenty to keep spectators of all ages entertained for the full two hours. Parking is available at the rodeo grounds, but to avoid traffic before and after the rodeo, it’s common to park downtown and walk to the arena. Bring a jacket and/or blanket as temps cool off quickly at the beginning and end of summer. If an authentic Western experience is on your Steamboat bucket list, the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series is not to be missed. For more information, go to www.SteamboatProRodeo.com or call (970) 879-1818.

Downtown Steamboat Springs is a National Historic District.
1 | TREAD OF PIONEERS MUSEUM | 800 OAK ST.
Constructed by Ernest Campbell in 1901, this was home to the Zimmerman family from 1914 to 1956. In 1959, the Tread of Pioneers Museum opened in this building on the corner of Fifth and Oak streets. In 1988, the building was moved to this location. The Utterback house ● was also moved to the site in 1997 from its original location at Fourth and Oak streets and adjoined to the museum. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. 2 | GIAMBONI HOUSE | 646 OAK ST.
Camillo Giamboni built this structure in 1888. Hidden under the siding is the original log building. This was home to Swiss brothers Henry and Camillo Giamboni, who were the first to make skis commercially in Steamboat Springs. 3 | CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH | SEVENTH & OAK ST. ● ● ● Margaret Crawford, founding mother of Steamboat Springs, was a charter member of the town’s Christian Science Society, organized in July 1908. The log building, which continues to house the Christian Science Church, was completed in November 1934. 4 | WILLETT HOUSE | 443 OAK ST. ● Built in 1906, this home is one of the few remaining pre-railroad vernacular wood frame structures in town. It has been owned by local noteworthy individuals such as George and Archibald Wither, Judge Charles Morning and most significantly Dr. F.E. Willett. Willett tirelessly served as the community doctor for nearly 60 years. It is now home to several local nonprofit organizations. 5 | ROUTT COUNTY COURTHOUSE | 522 LINCOLN AVE. ● The cornerstone for the Routt County Courthouse was laid on Sept. 9, 1922. Designed by noted Colorado architect Robert Fuller, the three-story building was completed in December 1923 at a cost of $122,000.
hospital relocated, the second floor became the popular Odd Fellows dance hall. The first floor served as a grocery, electric store and public libray from 1924 to 1967. 7 | PIONEER BUILDING | 700 BLOCK OF LINCOLN AVE. ●
The Pioneer Buidling served as a hotel from 1923 until 1979. In its heyday, the upstairs rooms were run as a classic Western boarding house and the downstairs housed the colorful Pioneer Bar. 8 | FIRST NATIONAL BANK/REHDER BUILDING | EIGHTH & LINCOLN AVE. (STEAMBOAT ART MUSEUM) ● ● ● The First National Bank of Steamboat Springs, chartered in 1902, occupied a small frame structure on this site until the present building was constructed in 1905. Dakota sandstone from the Emerald Mountain quarry, and handmade bricks from Trogler’s local brickyard were used in the construction.
● The Chief Theater was constructed by local master builder Arthur Gumprecht in 1926 and owned by Harry Gordon. The large, singlestory brick masonry building included an orchestra pit, stage and the capacity to seat 500 people, making it the largest theater in Northwest Colorado. The Chief has undergone a number of physical changes throughout its history, but it has remained an operating theater since 1927. Today, the Chief operates as a nonprofit organization providing local and national performers, talents, musicians, films and more.
9 | CHIEF THEATER | 813 LINCOLN AVE.
Built in 1904 by Ernest Campbell, this structure was originally the U.S. Post Office, followed by the Royal and Albany Hotels. From 1914 to 1921, the building was a hospital run by Dr. F.E. Willett. After the
●● Rising up steeply from the south side of the Yampa River, this section of Emerald Mountain is named for Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen, the “Flying Norseman” of Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. Howelsen arrived in Steamboat Springs in 1913 and introduced the townspeople to ski jumping and recreational skiing. By the 1930s, Howelsen Hill facilities included slalom and downhill courses, lights for night skiing, and a “boat tow” consisting of two sleds pulled up the mountain by a cable powered by a Model T engine and transmission. In 1947, a combination chair/T-bar lift was installed to the top of Emerald Mountain; it was one of the longest lifts in the

U.S. at that time. For over a century, the ski hill has served as the home for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, a nationally known training program.
In 1909, Chamberlain-Grey Drug Store took over ownership. Now, over 100 years later, the building is still home to a locally owned drug store/pharmacy.
11 | HARWIG’S SADDLERY | 911 LINCOLN AVE. (HARWIG’S)
18 | F.M. LIGHT & SONS | 830 LINCOLN AVE.
Built in 1901, this was originally a meat market. In 1916 it became Harwig’s Saddlery and Western Wear, which was run by the Harwig family until 1984. The historic cowboy sign over the storefront was painted in the 1950s or 1960s by noted Western artist Merrill Mahaffey. The painting of the cowboy shown in the photograph was removed from the building’s façade several years ago, when the building was repainted. The cowboy is now on display inside, safe from the elements, in the restaurant’s vestibule where he welcomes restaurant patrons.
The F.M. Light family moved from Hicksville, Ohio to Steamboat in 1905. Soon after their arrival, they purchased the lot, erected the building and secured enough merchandise to open this clothing store. Light family members traveled throughout Northwest Colorado and Southern Wyoming displaying their merchandise and taking orders from ranchers for Western wear, hats, boots, saddles and equipment. The retail store is still owned by family members.
12 | THE OLD PILOT BUILDING | 1009 LINCOLN AVE.
James Hoyle began Northwest Colorado’s first newspaper, The Steamboat Pilot, on July 31, 1885. This brick and stone building was constructed in the fall of 1909 for the newspaper printing office, which occupied the building until 1999. 13 | STEAMBOAT LAUNDRY BUILDING | 11TH AND OAK ST. (THE LAUNDRY RESTAURANT & CREEKSIDE CAFÉ) ● ● Built over a 13-year period starting in 1906, this two-story brick and river-rock structure was constructed for the Steamboat Laundry, Dry Cleaning and Pressing business, which it served as until the late 1970s. 14 | CARVER POWER PLANT | TENTH STREET BETWEEN LINCOLN AVE. AND OAK ST. (CENTENNIAL HALL) ●
● Originally built as a wood building in 1901, this coal-fired power plant made Steamboat Springs the first town in Northwest Colorado to provide its residents with electricity. The steam, a by-product of the system used to create electricity, was used to heat nearby schools and residences. The building continued to serve as a power plant until the 1950s. In the late 1990s, the City of Steamboat Springs purchased and rehabilitated the structure for public use as the historic portion of Centennial Hall.
15 | LORENZ BUILDING | 928 LINCOLN AVE.
This brick building was built in 1903. In 1912, it became the courthouse when the county seat relocated from Hahn’s Peak. After 1921, the courtroom occupied the second floor, while the clerk, treasurer and jail shared the ground floor. When the present-day courthouse was completed in 1923, the building became the site of a dance hall called the Social Benefit Association or SBA. 16 | HUGUS BUILDING/THIESEN MALL | 912 LINCOLN AVE. (STEAMBOAT SMOKEHOUSE)
Built in 1899, this was the site of J.W. Hugus & Co., one of the nation’s first general store chains. The store carried a variety of items including farm equipment, furniture, stoves, feed and gasoline in barrels. The original brick storefront is hidden under the contemporary façade. 17 | MAXWELL/SQUIRE BUILDING | 840 LINCOLN AVE. (LYON DRUG STORE) ●
● Construction of the building was financed by town investor, J.P. Maxwell. The building was constructed with local pressed brick from Trogler’s brickyard, and completed with local stone trim and plate glass. From 1909 to 1962, the post office occupied the ground floor. ● Listed on the Routt County Register of Historic Properties ● Listed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties

19 | THE FURLONG BUILDING | 810 LINCOLN AVE. (BUSHWACKER’S)
This building was started in 1919 and finished in July of 1920 using stone from the Emerald Mountain quarry to frame the windows. Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen completed the brickwork and masonry. 20 | THE ROUTT COUNTY NATIONAL BANK BUILDING |
●● Built in 1919 with stonework by Carl Howelsen, this building is a unique landmark of two different periods. The Lincoln Avenue façade shows the rehabilitated 1919 exterior, and the Eighth Street side displays the changes from the 1940s.

A. AND B. CRAWFORD HOUSES | 1238 AND 1184 CRAWFORD AVE. ● ● Crawford homes are private residences so please respect private property. The second and third houses built by the founding family of Steamboat Springs, the Crawfords, are still standing. The second home, at 1238 Crawford Ave. (on 12th Street), was built in 1886 from native lumber from the Suttle Mill. The bay window was added later to accommodate their daughter’s wedding reception. The large stone house at 1184 Crawford Ave. ● ● was built in 1894 of stone from the Emerald Mountain quarry. The family occupied this house until Mrs. Crawford’s death in 1939. Crawford’s descendants purchased the house in 2004 and carefully restored it. C. HISTORIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUILDING | 1201 LINCOLN AVE. (YAMPA VALLEY LAND TRUST) ● Located along Soda Creek next to the library, this small 1960 structure is one of Czechoslovakian-born architect Eugene Sternberg’s two mid-century modern “Usonian style” buildings in downtown Steamboat Springs (listed on the National Historic Register). Sternberg (1915-2005) came to the U.S. after World War II and soon established his architectural practice in Denver. The building’s nearly flat inverted pitch roof gives the visual impression of a butterfly in flight, so that locally, the building is known as the “Butterfly Building.”
●●● Designed by famous Denver architect Frank E. Edbrooke, the railroad Depot was fully financed by the citizens and businesses of the town in order to entice the railroad line through Steamboat Springs. Construction for the building began shortly before the first passenger train arrived on January 6, 1909 and was operational by August of that year. Passenger service was discontinued in 1968, and eventually the Depot became home to Steamboat Creates and the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts.

one of Steamboat’s many parks; Little Toots Park and Whistler Park both have playgrounds. Once the kids are tuckered out, it’s time to cool off in the waters surrounding Steamboat. Tubing the Yampa River is a popular option on sunny summer days, but you can also canoe, kayak, paddleboard or boat south of town at Stagecoach Reservoir or north of town at Steamboat Lake or Pearl Lake. Test your wall-scaling abilities at the LCA Climbing Center, which offers free rentals and varying difficulty options for indoor climbers, or scale the newly built climbing wall at the Old Town Hot Springs. As the sun dips low and the day winds down, get set for a night of strikes, splits and gutter balls at Snow Bowl, the bowling alley on the west end of Steamboat. Snow Bowl offers something for everyone: BBQ food, a patio, a full bar and, of course, 12 lanes of bowling fun. Another evening option for puzzle-solving families is The Crooked Key. Enter an escape room and work as a team to solve puzzles, gather clues and decipher codes before the time runs out. Whatever the time of day, find your own flavor of fun in Steamboat Springs. Tubers float down the Yampa River. Commercial operators provide shuttle service to a dedicated stretch of water.

teamboat Springs is almost as much of a bike town as it is a ski town, with an abundance of mountain biking options for every skill level. One of the best mountain biking spots, with easy accessibility from downtown, is Emerald Mountain. To get to Emerald, starting from Fifth Street, head south and make a right on Howelsen Parkway. 1. NPR NPR stands for “No Pedaling Required,” and is a favorite among Steamboat bikers for that very reason. Coast all the way down this downhill-only trail from the front side of Emerald Mountain, at points crossing a flowing combination of berms, ramps and tabletops. 2. Morning Gloria Morning Gloria winds to the top of Quarry Mountain through lush forests and features a mellow grade and tons of sharp switchback turns, making it a better uphill than a downhill. 3. Beall Beall is best done as a climb, with access to the top of Emerald Mountain, and culminates in breathtaking mountaintop views. Staying at a mellow grade the whole way, the trail starts in the open but transitions into forested terrain. There’s a short downhill portion at the midpoint. 4. Wild Rose Accessed a third of the way up No Mo’ Bluez, hit Wild Rose for access to the backside of Emerald as well as fantastic aspen-grove biking. 5. The Creative Side of Steamboat Springs rt is everywhere in Steamboat Springs. The town’s founder, Margaret Crawford, planted the first artistic seeds more than a century ago, and today they have blossomed into one of the nation’s foremost small-town arts communities. Dance, theater, music, painting, murals, sculpture, writing, architecture, photography and film all have a passionate presence in the Yampa Valley. Plan to spend a day soaking in this creative energy. Begin your tour at the Art Depot on 13th Street on the northwestern edge of Old

Town. Once the shipping hub of Northwest Colorado, today this building, which is on the National Historic Register, is the center of the arts community. Rotating visual arts displays showcase the range of styles – from classic Western to avant garde contemporary – mastered by regional artists. The newly remodeled caboose parked alongside the depot is a studio, occupied by a visiting artist. Flowers surround the red brick building, and big boulders along the neighboring Yampa River invite a moment’s rest along its shore.

RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL NEW CONSTRUCTION Musicians and dancers rehearse at PerryMansfield Performing Arts Camp.
A saunter along the 7-mile Core Trail, which passes in front the Depot, takes you past numerous public art pieces. One favorite: the mural of the Yampa River on the southeast side of the ambulance barn, about ½ mile southeast of the Depot. More than a dozen galleries are located in Old Town, stretching from the Depot to Third Street. Sidewalk cafes, riverside dining and lots of adorable shops make strolling along Lincoln Avenue and Yampa Street especially delightful. One downtown highlight is the Steamboat Art Museum, housed in the historic building at the corner of Eighth Street and Lincoln Avenue. Four of the West’s foremost plein air painters – Matt Smith, Ralph Oberg, Skip Whitcomb and Dan Young – are hosting a 30-year retrospective of their work at the museum throughout the summer. In fall, SAM hosts a week of plein air workshops, followed by an exhibition and sale. Admission to the museum is free. But the arts certainly don’t stop in Old Town. Strings Music Pavilion stands at the entrance to the mountain community. The Strings building is a work of art in itself, with a central ceiling beam shaped like a violin bow and a setting in the midst of lush gardens. The annual music festival runs throughout the summer and features nationally renowned classical and contemporary musicians, including hand-picked orchestral musicians from across the U.S. and performers from a multitude of genres. Strings also organizes Music on the Green concerts at Yampa River Botanic Park throughout the summer.. Up the road in Ski Time Square are galleries, wine bars and jewelers, so worth the visit to this tucked-away destination at the ski area base. The oldest and most revered arts destination is a 10-minute drive from downtown. Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp was founded more than 100 years ago and has been training dancers, actors and playwrights of international renown ever since. Agnes DeMille, Dustin Hoffman, Martha Graham, Julie Harris and Isadora Duncan are a part of the school’s legendary history. The campus consists of historic cabins and performance venues; check the concert schedule for up-to-date information. Inspiration, creativity and arts education: Steamboat’s arts scene is a lively one.

Taking to the Streets
here is no such thing as a plain brick wall for Steamboat Springs artists. There is only a canvas yet to be filled. Waterfalls, aspens, bicyclists, sunsets, sunflowers … even a fanciful mule deer. The streets of the city are lined with murals. Some depict iconic local landscapes, at least one stands as memorial to a fallen resident, others represent faraway places. Some are interactive: you can become an angel if you stand at the right place on Lincoln Avenue. While the inventory of local murals is constantly growing as the art form increases in popularity, there are approximately 20 public art murals in town, so hop on your bike and take in the sights. n fall, the Yampa Valley’s aspen forests come alive with a fiery palette of orange, red and yellow. Hop behind the wheel for an evening of sunset sightseeing. Pick any road and you’re sure to get excellent views, but these are local favorites. North Routt County – North Routt has top-notch views as you pass through stretches of ranchland and forest. Seedhouse Road offers the best-of-the-best views in fall. To get to it, after passing the Clark Store on the way to Steamboat Lake, take a right and follow the Elk River. Buffalo Pass – The closest option to downtown Steamboat Springs (and therefore the most heavily trafficked), the dirt road up Buffalo Pass – or “Buff” as many locals refer to it – is lined with aspen forests that light up in the fall. Sunset views from the pass are jaw-dropping any time of year. Colorado 131 to Yampa – Drive south of Steamboat through the towns of Oak Creek, Phippsburg and Yampa, and onward to the Flat Tops National Scenic Byway to experience miles of vibrant fall colors along the way. Rabbit Ears Pass – Drive east on U.S. 40 and climb Rabbit Ears Pass to view the Yampa Valley and its colors from above. On your way up, you’ll find many places to pull over and take in the views.

day of shopping in Steamboat Springs almost has to start with a visit to F.M. Light & Sons. Not only did you see a couple hundred signs for this store as you drove into the Yampa Valley from Kremmling, but it is the oldest store in town, having been established in 1905. Known for its authentic Western wear and genuine cowboy atmosphere, it’s quintessential Steamboat. Just around the corner on Ninth Street is Yampa Valley Kitchen, a newcomer to the dining scene, and a great place to stop for a light breakfast or a leisurely brunch. Dine outdoors amid the gardens or inside of this historic Steamboat home. After brunch, return to Lincoln Avenue and Yampa Street, which are lined with colorful shops and boutiques. Main street is lined with park benches, where the rest of the family can relax while the ladies try on clothes. Other must-see shops include Ohana, which started out as a pop-up and has grown into a main street stand-out, with handprinted T-shirts and other authentic local products, and Off the Beaten Path, Steamboat’s locally owned bookstore and coffee shop (check out the pastries and puzzles). While you’re downtown, satisfy your inner artisan by taking a glass-blowing class at Solar Flare Glasswork & Design, then purchase a beautiful, handmade glass art piece to commemorate your visit.

Love to flyfish? Stop by Steamboat Flyfisher; if you time it right, you may be able to meet owner Johnny Spillane, Olympic medalist and world champion Nordic combined skier. Also along the downtown stretch of the Yampa River is Backdoor Sports, Steamboat’s variation of a surf shop. Paddle up to this vintage business operated by the legendary Peter Van de Carr; it offers everything from carabiners to hockey sticks, plus tube rentals and shuttle service for floating the river. Yampa Street has been dubbed “Restaurant Row,” with more than a half-dozen restaurants, all with outdoor seating, some right on the river. Try Mountain Tap Brewery for locally brewed beers and creative dining in old converted gondola cars. For a more extensive brewery experience, hop on your bike and follow the Core Trail for the full Brew Trail tour. www.SteamboatChamber.com/activities/ brew-trail/ Steamboat also boasts its own distillery: Steamboat Whiskey Company, at 11th Street and Lincoln Avenue, featuring small batch whiskey, vodka, gin and moonshine, plus specialty spirits. A portion of proceeds from the sale of Warrior Whiskey goes to U.S. veteran support organizations. If THC and CBD are more your style, you might want to visit one of Steamboat’s marijuana dispensaries: Golden Leaf is along West U.S. 40, and Billo is at the eastern entrance to town, also on U.S. 40. While you’re on the east side of town, explore the mountain community. You’ll want to stop at Ski Haus, Steamboat’s locally owned, year-round ski and mountain shop. The staff consists of outdoor enthusiasts who can fill you in on the best places to hike, bike, camp, run, rock or climb. Head up Mount Werner Road/Circle to Ski Time Square to visit the tucked-away shops and restaurants, including Café Diva, one of Steamboat’s most famed wine bars and gourmet restaurants. If you’re look for a more casual option, head toward Slopeside Grill, which faces the ski slopes and is adjacent to Burgess Creek, an outdoor playground and a relaxation destination. When the sun sets, the party starts at numerous bars and pubs throughout the mountain community and downtown. One of your best bets to catch a live act is The Press, which offers beer, cocktails and food, as well as weekend music. What a way to end a day of shopping and dining in The ‘Boat. Shopping and Dining at the Farmers Market
O
n any summer Saturday, the focal point of a downtown shopping tour will likely be the Farmers Market between Sixth and Eighth streets along Yampa Street. Colorado’s agricultural heritage runs deep, and despite the long winters, summer’s harvests are bountiful. Homegrown tomatoes, greens, vegetables and fruits, pies, cheese, wine, jellies, salsas, hand-wrapped tamales, and of course, Colorado beef and bison are available seasonally. Sweet juicy peaches from Palisade’s famed orchards, fresh-baked European-style breads and pastries and fresh Alaskan fish are also among the reasons for planning weekly meals around the Farmers Market. If you don’t have access to a local kitchen, you can still grab a peach or pastry, barbecue or a crepe, fresh-squeezed limeade or an ice cream and relax in the shade alongside the Yampa River. Or take home a souvenir: the Farmers Market also features local artwork, clothing, baskets, coffee and jewelry. There are hats, too, in case you didn’t realize how hot the high-altitude sun can be. The Farmers Market is open Saturdays, June 5 – Sept. 18. Hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m, although early visitors might be able to pick up a cup of coffee and a pastry. The market is operating in accordance with Routt County COVID protocols, which are changing rapidly. Most likely the number of shoppers in the market at any one time will be controlled at the entrance. Other restrictions may be in place. * Check with local U.S. Forest Service offices regarding status of campgrounds, day use areas, and trailheads. The COVID-19 situation may result in delayed openings or closures to ensure safe social distancing and conforming to group size limits. The Forest Service is coordinating its COVID-19 response to align with federal, state and local guidance. Everyone is urged to take precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Minimize your impact by not traveling on muddy trails which degrade the quality and long term sustainability of the trail. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning are common. The threat is most significant along ridge lines, high points and open areas. Do not seek shelter under trees. 3. Minimize your exposure to the sun. 4. Pace yourself and drink lots of water. 5. High altitude sickness symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea and weakness. Rest, proper hydration and descent to a lower elevation can alleviate symptoms.

PEAK BEHAVIOR
Want to be the kind of visitor everyone loves? Just follow these 10 tips. 1. Make a Plan Research the places you’re planning to visit so that you can visit less-trafficked times of day. This will make for a more relaxing visit for all involved. 2. Don’t be a Trailblazer Colorado has so many trails, there’s no need to make your own. Preserve the pristine aspects of nature by camping at least 200 feet from waterways and staying on marked trails. 3. Leave No Trace Discovering a new space in the outdoors is amazing – don’t spoil this joy for others by altering the landscape. Instead of taking pieces of nature, take a picture. As cliché as it is, it will, in fact, last longer. 4. Don’t Be Rash – Trash Your Trash Pack it in? Pack it out. Also, any soap used to bathe in waterways should be biodegradable. VG 64 | ONLINE AT WWW.STEAMBOATCHAMBER.COM
5. Take Smokey’s Advice Check local fire restrictions, and keep campfires small and manageable. Ensure that all flames – including cigarettes – are completely extinguished before packing out. 6. Socially Distance from Wildlife Regardless of how cute an animal looks, don’t approach or feed it. 7. Share Trails and Parks Try lesser-known trails and campsites so that everyone can enjoy the solitude of nature. Keep noise in check so as not to disturb others. Yield to uphill hikers, bikers and horses, and give others plenty of personal space. Be courteous at trailheads, parking only in designated spots and leaving the space as you found it.
Moose are majestic creatures, but don’t approach one for a photo op.
8. Share the River Before floating the Yampa River, check the river flow to see if it’s safe for your activity. Wear a life jacket and secure everything to you and your craft so nothing ends up in the water. Respect others’ space, and do not bring dogs or any disposable containers with you. 9. Give Back Make Steamboat Springs trail maintenance easier by donating through Pledge for the Wild (www.PledgeWild.com) or at the meters found along the Yampa River Core Trail.
