elcome to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the #2 most vibrant small town in the nation (according to the Arts Vibrancy Index by SMU DataArts). That means your visit to our beautiful community not only has an abundance of outdoor activities and access to nature, but can also be infused with a wide variety of arts and culture events, classes and productions. We have a plethora of creative opportunities to enrich your time in Routt County. Lots of them. Steamboat is known as the land of Olympians, with worldwide Kim Keith, executive director accolades for sending 100 Olympians to the games, but it has also of Steamboat Creates achieved national recognition for its arts community. Depending on the time of year, visitors and locals enjoy offerings from cultural nonprofits like Piknik Theater, Steamboat Symphony Orchestra, Opera Steamboat and Strings Music Festival. There’s also an eclectic collection of bluegrass, rock, reggae and cover bands, as well as singer-songwriters performing at any of a number of intimate venues, including The Press and Schmiggity’s. In addition to a variety of fine art galleries, Steamboat is home to an energetic and diverse dance community offering everything from modern dance to aerial movement; tango to tap; West African to Western swing. The music scene is top notch, surprising for a town this size. The valley is also home to over 100 published writers devoted to mastering their craft and being inspired by Routt County’s sense of place and authenticity. Steamboat Creates, the umbrella organization for the arts in rural Northwest Colorado, has been nurturing the arts since 1972. This small but mighty nonprofit is located in the historic Depot Art Center, giving back to the community through heritage stewardship, public art, advocacy with governmental agencies and providing enrichment through creativity classes. Paulina M. Johnson
aulina M. Johnson hates paper waste. In fact, that’s the very reason she got into paper art in the first place, and earned a place on the cover of this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide. Originally from Mexico City, Johnson started out studying graphic design 15 years ago. While studying at the University of San Francisco, a professor asked her to make a list of 10 things she loved and 10 things she hated about graphic design, and this sparked a change in her path. “I realized I didn’t really enjoy it anymore,” Johnson says. “The main thing I hated was the amount of paper waste that was created.” This realization prompted Johnson to seek out an art form that reduced waste instead of increasing it. Her research brought her to the art of “Quilling,” or placing paper strips on edge to create patterns and images. “Once I tried it, I knew it was what I wanted to do. So, I started exploring what I could do with it,” Johnson says. When she first moved to Steamboat, she joined local arts group the Young Bloods Collective to get a foothold in the Steamboat arts community. “It was so great to be a part of that,” Johnson says. A show at Red West gallery gave Johnson the break she needed. Now, living in Oak Creek with her husband and two boys, she is an adjunct professor at Colorado Mountain College and an exhibiting partner at Pine Moon Fine Art gallery. Johnson’s most recent show, titled “All of Us Are,” took place at Pine Moon Fine Art this July. The exhibit featured pieces representing local landscapes, from Sleeping Giant to Gilpin Lake to Mount Zirkel, and each piece’s name completes the sentence presented in the exhibit’s title. The theme, Johnson says, is that we are all, as humans, more similar than we may think. “If you look at the Steamboat Ski Area from a distance during winter, all of the skiers look the same,” she says. “This is the same idea; in a wider perspective, our similarities outweigh our differences.” Johnson experimented with new paper widths, colors and textures for the exhibit. Adding a variety of color, she explains, was one of the more difficult aspects. “Monotone is what’s comfortable for me,” she says. “Adding color gets scarier. That’s by far the hardest part for me: picking colors.” “All of Us Are,” is the culmination of many lessons and realizations that Johnson has learned along her artistic journey. “Every piece I make, I think, ‘I should have done this,’ or ‘I wish I had done that,’” she explains. “And that’s how I start on the next one.” “It’s kind of a meditative process – I zone out while I’m working,” Johnson says. “I love working with my hands, making stuff, building stuff. Passion with Purpose Combining
A
rtist Jill Bergman’s ever-evolving art is as remarkable as her passion for Steamboat Springs. Her willingness to give of her time and talent has brought her to the forefront of the Northwest Colorado art community again and again. Among her most recent endeavors – yes, she has multiple community projects on her drawing board – is her participation in Mandala on the Yampa, the return of exiled Tibetan monks to Steamboat for the third time in the past 12 years. The monks are scheduled to visit Tuesday-Sunday, Aug. 9-14, and the surrounding events include ceremonies, sacred dance, conversation, and at the center of their visit, the creation of a mandala sand painting in Library Hall at Bud Werner Memorial Library, 1289 Lincoln Ave. The public is invited to watch the monks at work throughout the week. Alongside the monks’ mandala is a community sand painting. Locals and visitors are welcome to try their hand at filling in sand atop the design Bergman created. “It’s kind of a weird challenge,” Bergman says about this unusual assignment: creating a table-sized geometric figure that is colorful, intricate and symbolic. “I tried to include things that make me think of our community – landmarks, activities that are special to Steamboat, wild animals – they are part of what makes our community special.” The ski area, Howelsen, the Sleeping Giant and Fish Creek Falls are included in the design. “I just kept going,” Bergman says. “I wanted the mandala to combine local icons, with the Yampa River spiralling up out of it.” Creating the pattern took Bergman a couple of months. “I am an illustrator at heart. I hear an idea and I get a mental image of it. It’s so exciting to get started from that point.” The community mandala is four feet across. Bergman began by drawing it full-size with pencil, and then traced it with sharpie. After that was photographed, she had it printed on fine art paper 18 inches in diameter and painted the mandala design with watercolor. 14 • Volume 16, Edition 1, 2022

The monks’ mandala is, by tradition, an impermanent work. In the closing ceremony of the monks’ visit to Steamboat, the colorful sands are swept up from the library table and spread into the Yampa River to carry a healing blessing to the ocean and the world. Unlike that mandala, the community’s sand painting will have a lasting presence, as Bergman’s prints of the intricate design are available at Pine Moon Fine Art, 117 Ninth St, downtown, and at the Steamboat Art Museum store on the corner of Eighth Street and Lincoln Avenue. fter journeying from perch to perch over the years, Steamboat Springs’ iconic cougar statue has found a home where it can live out its years in peace. As part of Steamboat Creates’ plan to increase the amount of public art in its Creative District, the statue has been moved to new digs on the Yampa River Core Trail. 20 •• Volume Volume 16, 16, Edition Edition 1, 1, 2022 2022 20

“We asked the question, ‘How do we make sure that all the public art we have is actually in the public realm?’” says Kim Keith, executive director of Steamboat Creates. One of the organization’s goals is to increase the amount of public art within the Steamboat Creative District. “The district has funding to care for and maintain public art within its borders, so it’s easier to care for this statue if it sits within our funding guidelines,” Keith explains. The statue, which was previously located at the Steamboat Ski Area, has been refinished and installed on a rock feature overlooking the Yampa River Core Trail. A conservator oversaw the installation to ensure that the statue wasn’t damaged in the process. “We’re hoping to create a different engagement with the statue,” Keith says. “The public will still be able to interact with it, but not climb all over it.” The cougar statue has a colorful history, moving to many different locations including Loveland, West Lincoln Park, Centennial Hall and the Steamboat Ski Area, and undergoing significant wear and tear along the way. “It’s been really well loved,” Keith says. Loveland-based artist Rosetta created the statue, one of many pieces of hers featuring “big cats”: felines like lions, tigers, cheetahs, and, of course, cougars. “No other animals are quite as interesting and graceful as cats,” she says. “I’m fascinated by how beautiful and graceful and cuddly looking and how wonderful they are with their offspring, family wise. On the flip side, they’re consummate predators. It fascinates me, that combination. They have such varied poses. They’re so flexible and do so many interesting things.” The cougar was Rosetta’s first piece. “I learned from that one that I liked doing large pieces because you get your whole body into the process. Not just your hands. I connected with that – nice, big flowing curves. You can really get into it.” Rosetta originally worked for 17 years in the San Francisco graphic design industry, and transferred her design skills into the art of sculpture. “I try to make every shape contribute to the motion of the piece,” she says. “I eliminate small details that I don’t think contribute. In graphic design, I got a real feel for pulling out the essence of the shapes that define a particular animal.” Rosetta’s sculptures span the country, from Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago to Chapman University in California, but the prolific artist hasn’t forgotten her first big piece. “I’m thrilled to have my cougar piece up in Steamboat,” she says. If all goes smoothly, her cougar will be able to stay in its new home for good. w Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide • 21

choonover Gallery, a sleek contemporary gallery that opened last winter on Lincoln Avenue, fills a muchneeded niche in the thriving Steamboat Springs art scene. The gallery features work by nationally renowned artists who specialize in what owner Patie Schoonover describes as “mountain contemporary with a little modern West mixed in.” A quick look is not enough at this new endeavor of Patie and her husband, Ray, who moved from Durango to open the gallery. The real delight is walking from piece to piece with Patie, whose knowledge of the artists and their stories brings the work to life. One example is artist Nocona Burgess, who is the greatgreat-grandson of revered Comanche Chief Quanah Parker. Burgess, a member of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma, primarily shows his work in Santa Fe, New Mexico. But when Patie began researching his background, she found a mutual six-degrees-of-separation ancestor, and told him, “You have to

Schoonover Gallery’s Eclectic Collection show at our gallery. We’re related!” As a result, Steamboat is being treated to the work of one of America’s premier contemporary Native American artists. He is slated to visit Steamboat over Labor Day, when a reception is being held in his honor. “I’m having a really good time,” Patie says. “My enthusiasm seems to have helped get really established artists to participate in a new gallery.” The Schoonover Gallery collection is eclectic. It includes sculpture and curated fine jewelry, as well as paintings and other two-dimensional works. Among the 30 artists that Patie and Ray are representing is former street artist Seek One, a young and upcoming artist who, as an aside, loves to snowboard. Will we see him in Steamboat come ski season? Another featured artist is Atlanta, Georgia’s Gary Bodner, whose bold, modern work is in such demand that when a new piece arrives in Steamboat, “it’s like Christmas,” Patie says. Topher Straus is also represented at the Schoonover Gallery. His canvas is aluminum, his art is monumental, and his interest is turning to Northwest Colorado. He is slated to visit Steamboat to create an emblematic work; Patie does not know yet if it will be a winter scene like the ones he has done for Aspen and Breckenridge, or if he will choose another season. Two renowned Midwestern artists are represented at the gallery: Minneapolis artist James Penfield and Chicago’s 2022 artist of the year Mark McMahon, who has ties to Steamboat, having attended the Lowell Whiteman School (now Steamboat Mountain School). Italian artist Nicoletta Belletti is among the intriguing contributors to the gallery. Her technique may be reminiscent of Maltese architectural ornamentation, but her style is definitely 21st century modern. She describes her medium as acrylic paste, but the result is deeply textured, almost like frosting. Her subject matter ranges from floral scenes to pigs. You have to see it to comprehend it. hen she first moved to Steamboat Springs, Katie Earixson would play a game with her partner that they called “The Perfect Steamboat Day.” “We had this short list of things that would make the most 'Steamboat' day ever,” she says. The activities the couple imagined included hot air balloon viewing, bike riding, fireworks, and live music. In celebration of Steamboat Creates’ 50th Anniversary, Steamboat Creates asked her to turn this “perfect Steamboat day” vision into a series of banners on Lincoln Avenue this summer. Earixson created gouache paintings using a mix of watercolor and acrylic paint on black paper. Consisting of six images in total, the project features the most iconic of Steamboat activities: live music, hot air ballooning, biking, fishing, skiing and horseback riding. “The idea was to celebrate the magic of Steamboat,” Earixson says. “Our town itself is very vibrant, with lots of interesting people who like to really live life to the fullest. Steamboat really knows how to have a party.” Earixson stuck to this theme not only with the project’s subject matter, but with her art style. “Each has a little bit of ‘sparkle,’” she says. “The light here sparkles to me, and that just ties into this magical experience.” This was the first project of this kind that Earixson has worked on, as much of her other work is in mixed media, most notably designing the packaging for Seedhouse Coffee several years ago. “I saw that project as a mini celebration of Steamboat and the surrounding area,” she says. “That’s how I see the banners too.”

Earixson also creates acrylic abstract landscape paintings. As an up-and-coming local artist, Earixson sees this opportunity as a move in the right direction by the Steamboat arts community. “This project was an opportunity, as a novice artist, to get my name out there.
