hotographer Jack Klobetanz has traveled the world from Mongolia to Bolivia, but Steamboat Springs has captured his heart. “I’m so excited about Steamboat that I want to share that enthusiasm with my clients,” he says. Jack’s excitement for his subject matter shines through his work. Case in point: the June 2011 wedding of Lisa Buck and Ryan Adams atop the gondola at the Steamboat Ski Area. The Adams’ wedding is showcased on the cover of the 2012 edition of the “Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide.” “That was a really fun wedding to shoot,” Jack recalls. “They’re a greatlooking couple and they had a great group of friends.” The couple chose Steamboat for their ceremony because they had skied here previously. Their wedding on a mountain peak was special in itself, but Lisa was

also feeling on top of the world because the Oklahoma Thunder basketball team, for which she works, had just made the playoffs. Jack found common ground with Ryan, who is a fireman, as he has had training as a firefighter himself. “I really respect those people,” he says. The Adams’ wedding day was a little cool – ski corp. employees had just pushed the last of the snow off the lawn on Thunderhead Peak the previous week – so the ceremony itself was held indoors. “But we really wanted to take photos outside,” Jack recalls. “She was a little chilly, but she was so excited, it all worked out.” Jack takes a photojournalist’s approach to portraiture. He began his career as an art director for CBS, transitioning into a position as partner of a design firm in Steamboat. “Throughout my career as a visual artist, I’ve mixed in rich life experiences like working as a kayak guide on the Atlantic Ocean and being a ski patroller in the Rockies,” he says. ne of the most memorable moments in Trista Hofschulte’s wedding to John Ehrichs came when she first saw her groom waiting for her under the arbor atop Thunderhead Peak at the Steamboat Ski Area. Trista was never nervous or anxious the entire day, until she saw her handsome husband and 125 guests awaiting her walk down the aisle. At that

Trista chose a strapless, handembroidered gown by Lazaro. The dress buttoned up the back and was adorned with crystals. “It was very detailed,” Trista says. Her five bridesmaids wore gowns by Jim Helm, also of Lazaro. Junior bridesmaids wore Brooks Brothers’ dresses. At the reception, elegant silver vases held pink and ivory flowers and a touch of green. Votive candles complemented the arrangements. Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. chefs catered the dinner, and a Boulder-band provided the music. “They tear it up!” Trista says. “The dancing and the toasts – how fun it was! People were on the stage singing with the band while others were dancing the night away.”

One particularly popular attraction at this fabulous party was the photo booth, where guests could step inside and mug for the camera. “It was a huge hit!” Trista says. The beautiful sunset capped an idyllic evening, one that Trista’s friends say was among the best weddings they had ever attended.

Concorda Lutheran Church holds childhood memories for bride Jessica Fritz. One light-hearted moment occurred when the ring-bearer suffered stage fright and threw the pillow, allowing the rings to roll under a pew. “I didn’t see it, but the picture sequence is hilarious,” Jessica says. The newlyweds rode in a private gondola car to their reception atop Thunderhead Peak, where cocktails were served on the deck, followed by dinner and dancing in the Champagne Powder Room. “Lindsey Yochem and the staff at the mountain did a fabulous job putting everything together,” Jessica says. “My dad put together a slideshow for the father-daughter dance. It was so special and heartfelt – I think everybody got a little teary-eyed,” Jessica says. “We also did a choreographed dance with our wedding party – kind of flash mob style. My sister and I came up with it not even a week before the wedding. The performance wasn’t totally perfect, but everyone had a ton of fun putting it together and I think the guests enjoyed it. of our friends got married recently, and we re-enacted ‘The Dance’ so I think it will live on,” Jessica says. Jessica’s advice for brides-to-be is to plan realistically. “Figure out what your priorities are and what you’d be willing to forego. The day is supposed to be about celebrating your love with your friends and family, and it’s supposed to be FUN! I would definitely recommend hiring a wedding planner. She helped us turn our wedding vision into a reality – from flowers to linens to the schedule of events. I didn’t want to sweat the small stuff, and I didn’t want our moms or families worrying about those details either,” Jessica says. Jessica didn’t have to worry about what was happening behind the scenes. Instead, she and her husband danced the night away. “The dancing, oh the dancing, was so memorable!”

egan Ormston and her groom, Tyson Slater, explored Steamboat Springs’ Western heritage with their family and friends in the days leading up to their wedding. Hiking was among the most popular activities, and the men in the group went shooting at a friend’s ranch. They also enjoyed a beer or two at a locals’ bar. The wedding party spent a day by the river, celebrating with a meal at a riverside restaurant; they had their rehearsal dinner in Old Town, and strolled from gallery to gallery at Steamboat’s First Friday Artwalk. Many of the 200-plus wedding guests came from elsewhere in Colorado, while about 40 people came from other states. “People made a real vacation out of it,” Megan says. Most of their guests stayed at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort, where the concierge staff helped planned guests’ activities. Steamboat was the only venue the couple considered. Both had lived here previously. “We couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else,” Megan says.

The ceremony and reception were at Catamount Ranch’s Heritage Cabin. After unusually variable weather in late spring, the skies cleared on June 4 for the ceremony. “We lucked out big time!” Megan says. “Always have a contingency plan,” she advises. At Catamount, a huge party tent provides cover in case the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The most touching personal moment at Megan and Tyson’s wedding came during the ceremony itself. The couple wrote their own vows, and a friend officiated. “He recounted our memories and personal anecdotes. It made it perfect,” Megan says. The bride wore a sweetheart gown with a
small train and buttons up the back, designed by Priscilla of Boston, while her eight bridesmaids wore silk taffeta dresses by J Crew. The bride carried a bouquet of mixed flowers – “they almost looked like wildflowers,” Megan says. Catamount catered appetizers and dinner, but the bride brought her own favorite dessert, fruit tarts. “They fit right in with the whole wedding,” she recalls. With such a large outdoor ceremony, a problem or two wouldn’t have been a surprise. But that didn’t happen at the Slater wedding. Megan recalls asking her wedding planner’s assistant a few days before the wedding if there were any concerns. “No,” was the reply. “If there is a problem, you’ll never know about it,” the planners assured her. Megan’s number-one piece of advice for brides at destination weddings: Hire a wedding planner with local connections. In addition to One Fine Day’s staff, Megan and her mom
did most of the planning. Her father, whom she describes as “very businesslike,” also wanted to be involved in organizing his only daughter’s wedding. “He was so pleased with Lindsey and Catamount,” Megan says. He told her, “I will never forget the way you look tonight.” “Our wedding day ended up being just perfect,” Megan says.

What are the current trends among Steamboat brides? A. I try to create trends, not follow them. I really look at each individual bride and groom and their families to design a custom theme for them. Q. Can you give us an example? A. One bride told me that the most important thing to her was family, not only those who would be attending the ceremony, but also her ancestors. We created a Victorian theme, and
used vintage family photos as table placecards. The guests loved seeing the family photos made into unique centerpieces. Q. What about trends in color? A. I caution brides not to pick such an unusual, trendy color that when they look back at their wedding pictures in future years, they’ll say, “Oh, what was I thinking?” Neutral colors are best, Then add a stronger color as your accent. Q. What about wedding dresses? A. Here, too, it’s best to choose a style that’s timeless, with clean lines. You want to look classic and classy. Think Princess Catherine, not Princess Diana.

A. We have two venues: Hazie’s, an elegant, intimate restaurant, and the Champagne Powder Room for up to 250 guests on the top floor of the Thunderhead building. It includes use of the veranda. Either venue at 9,131 ft. – 2,000 feet above town – has incredible views and the sunset is untouchable.
Q. What’s the best time of year for a wedding atop the gondola? A. Any day on the mountain is beautiful! But the gondola doesn’t operate in spring and fall. Q. What about weather? A. Don’t fret about the weather! We have wonderful shuttle drivers that will get you and your guests to the top of the mountain if necessary. Q. How do we get everything else to the top?

At the wedding of Lisa Buck and Ryan Adams, the groom had his own cake, adorned with shot-gun shells. A groom’s cake has its roots in the American South and can be served at a separate table during the reception, or at the rehearsal dinner.

Even if the wedding does truly belong to the bride, traditions leading up to the day of the ceremony definitely emphasize fun for the groom. In Steamboat Springs, the traditional bachelor party is often replaced by, or at least accompanied by, a guys’ day on the golf course, at the fishing hole or at the shooting range.
