The groom represents the fifthgeneration of a Steamboat family. The late Del and Doris Scott, beloved community leaders, were Chase’s grandparents. Some of the 215 wedding guests shared Chase’s Steamboat ties, but others came from throughout the country. They enjoyed tubing down the Yampa, the rodeo, hot air ballooning and, of course, their amazing evening on the mountain. Lindsey Grannis of One Fine Day Productions orchestrated the event, with assistance from Rachel Radetsky, banquet manager for the Steamboat Ski Area. Andy and Emily Barnhart of Andy Barnhart Photography shot the wedding. “It was as close to perfect conditions as you can get,” Andy recalls. “We did a lap on Thunderhead Lift – that was pretty special. They were one of those couples who just made my job easy. They were natural in front of the camera and so obviously in love.” For more information about the cover photographer, visit www.andybarnhart.com.

uests at the wedding of Jessica and Chase Scott floated over fields of wild daisies on their chairlift ride to Thunderhead Peak for the late afternoon ceremony last July. The wedding was unique in Steamboat Springs because normally the chairlifts do not run in summer. But when construction caused delays in opening the gondola in summer 2017, the plan changed. “The mountain went above and beyond to accommodate us,” Chase says. “It turned out to be a blessing in disguise,” Jessie adds. “A lot of people loved it. They said the chairlift ride was the highlight.” After the ceremony Jessie and Chase had a chance to do a full loop on the chairlift. “It was an incredible moment just the two of us,” Jessie says. From wildflowers and warm summer weather to a spectacular sunset and a full moon, this wedding could not have been scripted any better. The moment Chase remembers most is the first look, when Jessie walked out of the gondola building and tapped him the shoulder. “She looked absolutely stunning,” he recalls. One of Jessie’s favorite moments occurred later in the evening when the couple stood on the balcony outside the Champagne Powder room atop the gondola, watching all their friends and family celebrating inside. “It was like looking inside a fishbowl. Everyone we love was inside, having the time of their life,” she recalls. “It was a very rowdy dance party.”

Leslie Rapparlie & Dan Greer Saturday, August 5, 2017 InPhotography www.inphotography.net
L
eslie Rapparlie and Dan Greer knew they’d remember their Steamboat Springs wedding day for the rest of their lives, but even they couldn’t have predicted just how memorable it would be. Dan and Leslie, from Deerfield, Kansas and Englewood, respectively, met in September 2015. Spontaneously changing their first date plans, they went to Sams No. 3 Diner in Glendale after they both expressed admiration for the Food Network and restaurants featured on it. “I could tell there was something really unique about Dan,” Leslie says. In February 2016, Leslie brought Dan to the Banff Mountain Film Festival in Denver, which she had been attending every year since 2005. As sweeping shots of Banff, Canada, filled the big screen, Leslie recalls saying, “I would

love to go there.” Dan, knowing he’d just found his location to propose, scheduled a vacation there for the following June. Unaware that Banff would be colder than Denver, their first task was to purchase long pants and jackets for the chilly weather. As they rode up the Banff gondola, Dan pulled a ring out of a plastic bag that had contained the buttons for his new pants. “I promise it’s not from a vending machine,” he said. The engaged couple settled on Steamboat as their wedding location, and began planning the event with the help of Lindsey Grannis at One Fine Day Productions. “The first time I met Lindsey, we were touring venues and I remember thinking: she’s so relaxed,” Leslie says. “She makes things so easy and is always on top of things. She’s like a well-oiled machine.”
Leslie and Dan's rings sparkle... under fairy lights.
Leslie and Dan held their rehearsal dinner on Friday at Rex’s American Grill and Bar, and the majority of their guests stayed at Trappeur’s Crossing that night. The big day began at Rocky Mountain Day Spa, with the bride and bridesmaids doing their hair and makeup. At 4:15 that afternoon, shuttles began picking up guests for the trip out to Flying Diamond Ranch for the 5 p.m. wedding ceremony. www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 15
Leslie's veil flows in the breeze.
Leslie wore a Matthew Christopher strapless gown with a trumpet silhouette and a lace overlay purchased at The Little White Dress Bridal Shop in Denver. Her bridesmaids wore a variety of dress styles and color combinations from Revelry, but all stuck to a color scheme of blush, rose gold, and white. The ceremony itself created memories to last a lifetime. A long hailstorm moved the ceremony into a semi-permanent tent provided by the venue, Flying Diamond Ranch. “My mentor read the Native
American Wedding Blessing and when he got to the part about a couple making it through a storm, literally at that exact moment there was a resounding thunder clap,” Leslie laughs. “I really did love it all,” Leslie says. The heartfelt ceremony included a moment where the couple walked to each of their parents to ask for their blessing, as well as a period when the audience had the opportunity to shout their support for the couple.

Colorado Event Rentals helped fill the space with beautiful linens, dishes, tables, and other accoutrements. The room was accented with lighting and draping that was pre-set for pro basketball player Ryan Anderson's starstudded wedding the next day; Leslie handmade many of the decorations, signs, and gifts for guests, which included coasters made from reclaimed aspen wood found in Steamboat. Marno’s Custom Catering provided dinner and, instead of a cake, the couple opted for cupcakes from Mountain Brew and macaroons from Dana’s Bakery. DJ Jerry Sorenson packed the dance floor as the wedding party and guests danced late into the evening before being shuttled back to their hotels. For their honeymoon, Leslie and Dan traveled to Portugal, where they took wine tours, went sight-seeing in Lisbon, toured castles, and explored the island of Madeira. Leslie and Dan’s next big

adventure isn’t far off. “The very first line our officiant said was, ‘If rain on your wedding day is a sign of fertility, what could hail mean?’” Leslie says. “We got pregnant within two months.”

teamboat Springs itself was at the heart of Jenna Knoll’s wedding to Hugh Cullman last June. The couple was married on a sunlit afternoon near the shore of Lake Catamount, a private lake just south of town. When Jenna was growing up, she and her family came to Steamboat often, winter and summer. “It’s where I learned to ski,” she recalls. She was excited about introducing Hugh, who grew up skiing in Vermont, to Mount Werner when they first started dating. “We had never skied together before, but when he came skiing with me, it was like a perfect match.” Most of the couple’s 160 wedding guests had not been to Steamboat previously, so sharing the community with
them was one of the highlights of the wedding weekend. “It’s just so special to be in Steamboat and to share it with all of our friends and family,” Jenna says. “When you get married in Steamboat, you don’t need to get hung up on details. Between the beauty of the area and the hospitality of the people, it’s all going to work out.” The couple carried their shared love of winter sports and Steamboat throughout the wedding. Old skis doubled as guest books, and trail names – 50% Steamboat Ski Area and 50% Jay Peak in Vermont – served as table names. Guests had a busy week during their stay in Steamboat. The bride’s parents, who now reside in town full-time, hosted casual drinks at their
home on Thursday evening. Friday was earmarked for a tubing run down the Yampa River, although that may not have been what the groom envisioned in planning the party. June is still early season on the river; the current was swift and water was brrrr cold. The bride opted out of the adventure, choosing instead to be the chauffeur. “The water was ferocious. It wasn’t quite the lazy river Hugh promised. I was supervising. I was very worried (no one got hurt), so I was driving up and down the streets along the river.” Friday evening’s rehearsal dinner was at Aurum. The theme was Western and guests were encouraged to wear cowboy boots and/or hats. Saturday’s ceremony and reception took place at Catamount, the bride and groom’s first www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 21

wedding, making the ceremony all the more personal. “It was lighthearted and funny,” Jenna recalls. Mannequin, a Denver-based band, played for both the ceremony and reception. The bride’s father escorted her down the aisle – Jenna is the youngest of three sisters so her dad is a “pro” at the task – to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The recessional was “Get Ready,” by the Temptations. Following the celebration at Catamount, people-movers transported guests to the after-party at Slopeside, where late-night libations, pizza and dancing ensued. Sunday morning, guests dropped by One Steamboat Place to say their good-byes. On Monday, the bride and groom left for their honeymoon to Tokyo and Vietnam. Exhausted from the excitement of the

amily and friends flocked from all over the country to celebrate Stephanie Wolf and Andy Knapp’s wedding in Steamboat Springs last fall. Stephanie, from Naperville, Illinois, and Andy, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, met while they were both living in Chicago. “I was very late to our first date, so I'm lucky he is a patient guy to have waited for me – a complete stranger – to show up,” Stephanie says. “We clicked right away, and I have never been late for a date since.” On a walk with their dog, Roscoe, across Stone Arch Bridge one weekend in Minneapolis, Andy got down on one knee. Stephanie immediately said yes, and the couple decided that Steamboat would be the perfect destination for their wedding. They started the planning process with Alex Mathison at SoulSpark Events. “Our day wouldn't have been possible without Alex,” Stephanie says. “She went above and beyond our expectations, and she always accommodated our very hectic schedules and brought positive energy in our moments of panic and stress.” Aurum Food & Wine hosted the couple’s rehearsal dinner, which included a heartwarming slideshow of Stephanie and Andy, courtesy of Andy’s brother, as well as a poetry reading by Andy’s mother, Dianne. The poem Dianne read had been presented to her at her own wedding rehearsal by her soon to be mother-in-law.
Guests got their beauty sleep at various lodging locations around Steamboat, including Bella Vista, The Porches and The Steamboat Grand. The morning of the ceremony at Holy Name Catholic Church, Stephanie and her bridesmaids had their hair styled at Brio Salon and their makeup applied by Cari Ann Bird at Apothecari Skin Care. The gorgeous ceremony was accented with bouquets of assorted roses, eucalyptus, dahlias, lisianthus, protea and anemone. The bridesmaids each wore their own style of dress, in varying coral tones. Stephanie wore a fitted lace dress with button detail on the back – the first dress she had tried on at a boutique near her hometown. “The most memorable moment was watching Steph walk down that aisle with her dad,” Andy says. Stephanie recalls that Father Ernest Bayer wove a delicate mix of humor and levity into the marriage homily. With family scattered across the country, the couple treasured the rare opportunity to have their loved ones in one place. “Most of our guests traveled from out of state, so to see so many people travel the distance to join us was sweeter than ever,” Stephanie says. Following the ceremony, the wedding party and guests traveled to Bella Vista www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 27

for the reception, a highlight of the day because of the perfect fall weather. “It was snowing earlier in the week, but the day of was clear skies and mid-60 degrees,” Stephanie says. “Only in Steamboat!” Reception fare, provided by Marno’s Custom Catering, was grilled Colorado leg of lamb with sauce au poivre, lightly blackened Rocky Mountain ruby trout with citrus beurre blanc and wild rice pilaf. Speeches and dancing enhanced the
merriment of the reception, which Andy says proved to be his favorite part of the wedding day. The couple spent an extended honeymoon in Bali. “Bali is an incredible place,” Stephanie says. “We woke up at 2:30 a.m. to catch the sunrise at the peak of a volcano: Mount Batur.” 2017 was a year of momentous changes for Stephanie and Andy, so they look to recharge a bit this coming year. “In 2017 we

moved states, bought a home, graduated law school and passed the bar, started new jobs, and got married,” Stephanie says. “We’re looking forward to a quieter year, focusing on our careers and settling into our new roles as husband and wife.” Simplicity adds elegance, from Stephanie's back laced gown to lavender adorning the Mountain Brew cake.

irst came love, then came residency for Blair and Ryan Shattuck, who came to Steamboat Springs in search of a wedding venue, but also found their new home, moving here seven months prior to their wedding. “We both love Steamboat,” Blair says. “We’ve been coming up here separately since we were kids. My family owned one of the first Steamboat condos, and Ryan would come and ski, so we kind of just instantly agreed we’d love to get married in Steamboat.” The two became engaged on Valentine’s Day, 16 months before their wedding. They were on their way out to dinner after a day of hiking in Boulder when Ryan got down on his knee and proposed. They came to Steamboat to choose the location for their wedding. “We looked at a few places, and then we went to Aurum. We just loved the nice, relaxing vibe down by the river. Everything was there already. We wanted a wedding with the least amount of moving parts. We just wanted to enjoy it – it was a pretty easy decision,” Blair says. Approximately 100 people came from throughout the country for the wedding. “It was really neat to get everyone together in the same place,” Blair recalls. Because she wanted her closest friends and family to have a good time and explore Steamboat, she did not have bridesmaids. “I went for simplicity,” she says. She did, however, have two flower girls, her nieces, and two ringbearers. Blair chose a sleek, strapless gown from Denver’s Little White Dress Bridal Shop and paired it with a short, white, lacy jacket. “I wanted traditional/ elegant and fun/modern – I got to have both,” she says. The deck at Aurum is a front-row seat to the Yampa River and Howelsen Hill.

The couple chose Narrow Gauge, which has a country/rock flair, for the reception. “People were out on the dance floor well before dinner. We told them we were a dancing crew." "Aurum did an outstanding job,” Blair says. “The food was amazing. Lots of guests commented that it was the best
food they’d had at a wedding.” Late night, after dancing, Aurum even brought out sliders and flat bread pizza. One of the many stand-out memories of their wedding day was when the couple stepped away from the party to have pictures taken near the base of Emerald Mountain on the Quarry Trail. “It looks Aurum's chef created a small wedding cake topper for the occasion.
Green foliage accented with white flowers frame the couple during the ceremony and decorate the dessert table.
Her father walked her down the aisle, and a friend, attorney Jeff Walsh, officiated at the ceremony. “He did the most amazing job. It was so dear and personal; I’m not sure there was a dry eye in the house,”
Blair recalls. She walked down the aisle to Van Morrison’s “These Are the Days,” followed by Hall and Oates’ “You Make My Dreams Come True.” “We both grew up in the ‘80s,” Blair says with a chuckle.

Setting the Tone
Classic Music
L
ooking to give your wedding party a one-of-a-kind look? Using different tones of the same color for bridesmaid dresses helps to create distinctive wedding photos. Photographers Hilary Spillane and Kel Elwood offer tips on this popular trend. • From a photographer’s standpoint, tonal dresses are a refreshing change from the traditional "buy the same dress" look. A woman dressed to the nines is so much fun to photograph because she is feeling her best, but the difference in the color makes for an overall gorgeous photo. It mixes things up, which makes the subjects feel independent and bold. • The freedom to choose what you like and what you know looks good on you is empowering for bridesmaids and makes them feel amazing on the wedding day. We love to photograph confident women; it shows in the images. • Another trend is the “different dress styles for each bridesmaid.” This is such a 38 | Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2018
great idea because we all love a different concept. • This tonal trend is two-fold: Either you choose the bridesmaid dresses all the same style, but different tones of the same color, or you allow your girls to choose a style that they like in a shade different from the bridesmaid standing next to them. This can be quite tricky if bridesmaids don’t live close to one another. Going together to select dresses ensures there is no deviation from the original concept, and the bride has more control over the color.

Popping the Question in Steamboat Springs
S
teamboat Springs’ abundant and immeasurable beauty is the perfect backdrop for getting down on one knee and asking the big question to the one you love. Here are a few of our favorite Steamboat proposal location ideas.
1 Yampa River Botanic Park – Six acres of beautiful botanical gardens are home to sculptures, weaving trails and stepping stones over streams.
offers dramatic views of the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. Your fiancé might even swoon in your arms at the 750-foot drop from the middle of the causeway.
2 Fish Creek Falls – A ¼-mile hike to the base of the Fish Creek Falls offers spectacular views of the 283-foot waterfall and water rushing between giant boulders.
6 Zirkel Circle – The stunningly blue Gilpin Lake highlights the Zirkel Circle Hike. This breathtaking location is a picturesque proposal spot for experienced hikers. Go north from Steamboat about 18 miles to Seedhouse Road; turn right and continue about 11 miles to Slavonia Trailhead. Take the left fork to remain on trail #1161 to Gilpin Lake. To complete the circle, continue to Gold Creek Lake, then back to Slavonia Trailhead – about 11 miles altogether.
3 Strawberry Park Hot Springs – The natural beauty that surrounds the springs is breathtaking, and your sweetheart will enjoy a soak in the relaxing and rejuvenating mineral water. 4 The wildflower field at the base of the Rabbit Ears geological formation – Flowers as far as the eye can see provide the backdrop for the most important question you will ever ask. 5 Devil’s Causeway – Notorious for its thrilling “land bridge,” Devil’s Causeway
7 Balloon Ride – Take in heavenly views of the Flat Tops, Hahns Peak’s inactive volcano and the Steamboat Springs area from a hot air balloon.
An easy hike to the base of Fish Creek Falls or the longer hike to the top are both ideal locations to pop the question.

A sunrise on Rabbit Ears Pass in a field of lupines would be the perfect setting for a proposal.
8 Steamboat Resort – Various points on the mountain offer views of the Never Summer Range, Hahns Peak and North Routt County, the Flat Tops and the Yampa Valley. In the summer, propose on a wildflower walk; in the winter, the picnic table off the Broadway ski run is one of our favorite spots. 9 Buffalo Pass – Just a couple miles north of downtown Steamboat Springs, Buffalo Pass is a winding dirt road with spectacular views of the valley, especially in fall when photographers come from throughout the West to capture the colorful panorama.
Noah Wetzel • www.noahdavidwetzel.com
10 The Quarry Trail – Park at the trailhead on Blackmere Road and hike up the two-mile-long dirt road to an overlook of Steamboat’s old rock quarry. The quarry is long since defunct, but the viewpoint towers above Old Town, with the Steamboat Ski Area and the green valley floor completing the scenic vista.

For Grooms
Wedding Lingo K
now what you’re talking about. Like every other speciality, wedding planning has its own lingo. B&G: Bride and Groom BM: Best Man Boutonniere: A single flower or small floral decoration pinned to the jacket lapel, donned by the groom, groomsmen and possibly the FOG and FOB. Bustle: Bustles are buttons or ties used to transition a long gown with a train into a dress the bride can walk and dance more comfortably in. Charger: A large, elegant plate on which other dinnerware is placed. Typically not used for food, but as a decorative place marking.
Corsage: The small bouquet of flowers worn on the wrist (typically larger than the boutonnieres) generally worn by the MOB, MOG and grandmothers of the bride and groom. FG: Flower Girl First Look: Bride and groom see each other before the ceremony for an intimate moment FOB: Father of the Bride FOG: Father of the Groom Head Table: Table at which the bride and groom sit, sometimes with other members of the bridal party, during the reception. A recent trend has been for the bride and groom to have their own table in the center of the room, called a sweet heart table. MOB: Mother of the Bride MOG: Mother of the Groom MOH: Maid/Matron of Honor Overlay: Essentially the same thing as tablecloth, the difference being how each is used. Overlays are used to partially cover a tablecloth while adding an additional pop of color. RB: Ring Bearer
Runner: A strip of cloth that goes from one end of a long table to the other, over the tablecloth. Used to carry out a theme or add additional decoration.
And some Steamboat-specific terms… Charlie’s Hole (also A-Hole and D-Hole): Pools along the Yampa River as it runs through town that are fun for kayakers, rafters, standup paddleboarders and tubers. Tubing is a popular activity at destination weddings. The Core Trail: Technically the Yampa River Core Trail, this paved, seven-plus mile stretch runs from Dougherty Road at the east end of town to the skate park in west Steamboat. Gapers: Tourists who look especially out of place; most commonly spotted in winter, although donning a t-shirt with a dorky slogan, socks and flip-flops, splotchy zinc oxide and a safari hat will earn you the designation any time of year. Friends don't let friends... Gondie: Affectionate local nickname for the Steamboat Gondola. Hotel Row: The stretch along East U.S. 40 that is home to hotels from several national chains.
The Mountain: Basically any area that’s not a part of downtown or west Steamboat, including everywhere from City Market and Wildhorse Marketplace to Storm Meadows and Ski Time Square. Mount Werner: Often used in reference to any location at the Steamboat Ski Area, which actually consists of four peaks, one of which is Mount Werner. Old Town: Downtown Steamboat Springs, located two miles from the mountain community. The Pass: Rabbit Ears Pass on U.S. 40. While there are several passes in the area –Buffalo Pass, Gore Pass and Yellow Jacket Pass, to name a few – Rabbit Ears is THE pass. The Promenade: The stretch of Burgess Creek that runs from Ski Time Square to Gondola Square and includes several great spots for wedding and engagement photos. Restaurant Row: Nickname for downtown Yampa Street, which is lined with restaurants, many of which make ideal venues for rehearsal and welcome dinners, and weddings.
One less thing to worry about ... GO Alpine fulfills multiple wedding transportation needs from in & out of town shuttles for wedding parties & guests, rehearsal dinner shuttles, airport transfers and more!
