hotographers Andy and Emily Barnhart ventured into an aspen grove last fall to avoid the highcontrast light of a sunny day when they were shooting the wedding of Morgan Moss and Derek Leidigh. Their decision resulted in the lovely image of Morgan bathed in warm, soft light that is the cover of the 2014 edition of the Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide. “We placed Morgan in the shade of one large aspen in order to take the shadow off her face, but still have the glowing light behind her,” says Andy. Morgan and Derek, both Steamboat residents, were married on Sept. 28, 2013, at the bride’s family cabin in North Routt County, alongside the Elk River. With such lovely surroundings, the couple chose natural décor, and planted a tree beside the river during the ceremony. Morgan’s gown was by Manuel Mota for Pronovias. The sash was adorned with feathers to complement the ones she wore in her hair. A bride’s beauty shines through on her wedding day, but capturing it requires art – and a few trade secrets. One of the Barnharts’ techniques is to enncourage the bride and groom to spend a few minutes alone together on their wedding day. “Brides are most beautiful when we allow for an intimate, private moment, even if it’s only 15 minutes,

Andy & Emily Barnhart in the midst of a whirlwind day,” Andy explains. “That’s when we get the very best shots with minimal direction.” Andy’s training included dark room techniques and the use of film cameras. “I really fell in love with the soft, romantic process of film. Although most of my wedding photography is digital, I try to mimic the look of film in post-processing. I believe wedding photography should have a natural, timeless feel,” he says. “We adore watching the story of a couple unfold before our lenses and pride ourselves in not creating moments with our presence, but capturing them from a distance,” Emily says. “Knowing that we’ve captured moments that make us tear up, smile or laugh out loud is a constant reminder that love is precious and that family and friends are priceless. here do you go when you live in Aspen and want a destination wedding? Steamboat Springs, of course. “We first went there to get away for a weekend,” says bride Megan Peterson. “There’s something about Steamboat that we love. It’s a special place — a dream spot for a wedding.” Megan and her husband, Brody, were married on a beautiful summer evening at the top of the gondola. Their wedding began at 6 p.m., allowing their guests to watch the full sunset from the balcony of Thunderhead lodge, where a cocktail hour followed the ceremony. About 140 guests traveled from 20 states to attend. Most of the group stayed at the Steamboat Grand, just across the street from the base of the ski area.

Guests had their choice of outdoor activities during their visit. Megan and Brody recommended everything from the remote and romantic Strawberry Park Hot Springs to the free summer concert series. “Our guests said this was the best venue for a wedding they had ever been to,” Megan says. Seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen composed the wedding party. The bridesmaids wore strapless gray gowns and carried blush pink and white bouquets, while the groomsmen wore gray suits and pink ties. The bride’s gown was by Justin Alexander for the Kathryn Elizabeth line. It had a crinkled silk organza pleated bodice with a natural waist, and a silk organza, circular-cut, a-line skirt with rose details throughout. She complimented it with a belt by James Clifford that

featured Swarovski crystals and ivory flower detailing. She carried a bouquet of hydrangeas and greenery. “I’m not a very formal person,” Megan says, “so the dress was in-between. Mountaininspired.”
Megan says. On their sixth anniversary as a couple, Brody proposed on the lake where they met. “It was a romantic night,” Megan recalls.
The groom is a Colorado native, but the couple met in Megan’s home state of Minnesota, when Brody’s friend invited him to a cabin on Gull Lake for a weekend. “It was love at first sight,”

Megan remembers the gondola ride to the event as a peaceful moment before all the excitement began. She took time before the ceremony began to look around her and to enjoy the mountain scenery as her friends gathered, waiting for her to walk down the aisle on the arm of her father. “That’s something I’ll always think about,” she says. After their wedding, the couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Kauai and relocated to Minnesota, where it all began.

arly Wright and Austin Bond fell in love in Steamboat Springs. And they fell in love with the town too. Austin and Carly met and became friends in Auburn, Ala., then decided to embark on a new adventure by moving to Steamboat, where Austin’s family had been coming to for years to ski; they have a house north of town. Soon after they arrived, they realized that the friendship was turning into something more.

Austin proposed to Carly in Kona on a family vacation. He managed to arrange a romantic dinner for just the two of them. “Why don’t you guys want to come?” Carly recalls asking the other family members, who were in on the plan. “He’d been carrying the ring around the whole time,” she says. They were engaged for 1½ years before their wedding on Aug. 17, 2013. An authentically charming Southern belle, Carly knew she had found their wedding venue when she discovered

Bella Vista Estate, with its sweeping views of Lake Catamount and the Yampa Valley. The estate sleeps 26 people, so many of their friends and family stayed on site, and the rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception were all held there. When guests came to town, they received a welcome packet that included maps, a list of favorite restaurants and suggestions for activities that ranged from the Alpine slide and hot springs to gondola rides, hikes and bike trails.
“We wanted to show our guests there was more to do than just attend the wedding,” Carly says. Meanwhile, the bride arrived in town loaded down with wedding accoutrements. “Our car was packed to the ceiling, plus we shipped packages and sent things with our parents,” Carly says. She loves crafts and wanted to add her own touches to the events, which had a true Steamboat style. Ship’s hooks and shiny metal pails held the flowers at www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com

Violinist Jenna Kramer played during the ceremony, while dance music reigned at the reception. “It had kind of a ‘50s vibe,” Carly recalls. She and Austin chose “Baby I’m Yours” by the Arctic Monkeys for their first dance. Wedding planner Jill Waldman of The Main Event orchestrated the wedding. “I love Jill,” Carly says. “She knows everybody and has developed great relationships in Steamboat. My biggest advice to other brides is to hire a wedding planner. So much goes into every little aspect. It’s definitely crucial.”

Carly chose a sash of satin champagne ribbon with organza and silk chiffon flowers, accented with pearls, Swarovski crystals and rhinestones from Esty.com. It complemented her elegant wedding gown with its intricate, beaded lace overlay and a lace-up back. She wore her long hair in loose curls, partially pinned back into an elegant bun. Stephanie Herman of Waterside Day Spa was the stylist.
The Colorado theme extended to the menus for the weekend, which included a BBQ featuring bison and elk burgers for the rehearsal dinner. Billy

The ceremony itself was the culmination of a day that started early. The bride and her bridesmaids and the groom and his men formed two teams for the Steamboat Pentathlon, a oneof-a kind event that consists of alpine skiing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, mountain biking and running. The ladies were the Wedding Stingers (sponsored by Steamboat’s own HoneyStinger), and their counterparts were the Greasy Groomsmen. The men finished first in their class, while the women finished third. “That was one of the best decisions we made,” Ashley says. After the race, the couple headed to the mountain, where they skied in the afternoon. Meanwhile, their nonskiing guests headed up the gondola. The wedding took place in the late afternoon, when the area around Thunderhead Peak had begun to thin out. (The bride, who is a competitive athlete, is sponsored by HoneyStinger and negotiated a GoLite sponsorship for the wedding apparel.) Members of the Steamboat Ski Patrol
stayed late on the mountain so the bride and groom could ski down while their guests descended by gondola overhead. Everyone regrouped for shuttle service to Haymaker Golf Club, where a sleigh ride dinner took the place of a traditional reception. “We got so many compliments,” Ashley says. “Our guests loved it – it was really unique.” The couple’s wedding cake reflected
their mutual love of the outdoors. It featured a miniature mountain, complete with skiers, and a trail on which tiny mountain bikers rode. Approximately 75 guests attended the festivities, which included a rehearsal dinner at Hazie’s, atop the gondola, and Sunday brunch the day after at The Cabin in the Steamboat Grand. Most of the guests made a little ski vacation out of the trip, Ashley recalls.
Ashley and Erick, who live in Fort Collins, met on the Colorado State University cycling team. They visited Steamboat during the summer as part of the cycling tour and eventually bought a small condo here. The couple selected March because they hoped the mountain would still be snowy, but warmer than in midwinter. “It was perfect. “We really wanted to have a winter wedding,” says Ashley, who was married atop the gondola on March 9, 2013. “We love Steamboat Springs; it has meaning to us.”

Rico, where Ashley and Erick competed in a half-Iron Man. “I did OK; the wedding interfered with my training,” she jokes. “We’re going to try to do the Pentathlon again on our anniversary.”

After a whirlwind week of fun in Steamboat Springs with friends and family, you and your bridesmaids enjoy a quiet moment on a gondola ride to the top of Thunderhead Peak. There, a shuttle van whisks you away, on a short but incredibly scenic ride to the new Four Points Lodge, where you will be married at one of the most dramatic settings for a wedding in Colorado. After final preparations in the private bridal room, you walk out the door on your father’s arm. Your guests await you in comfortable chairs, surrounded by views of the Yampa Valley below and Storm Peak above. Your breath catches for a moment as you take in the amazing setting, the smiling, familiar faces — and most of all, your husband-to-be. When the “I-dos” have been said, you and your guests move to the L-shaped balcony for cocktails on the veranda,

watching as the setting sun lights the sky on fire. Dinner awaits you inside the new lodge, where the head table is strategically placed in front of 18-foot, floor-to-ceiling windows, with views straight down the slope to the valley floor. After dinner, you move to the large dance floor, where the band leads you in your first dance. As the evening stars come out, the party continues with guests moving easily from the dance floor to the balcony, with its outdoor fireplace, and back inside to gather around the bar. When the evening winds down, you descend the gondola side-by-side with your new husband, watching the city lights twinkling below you. Steamboat’s newest wedding venue, Four Points Lodge opens for its first summer in 2014. The 13,000 squarefoot, two-level building accentuates its mountain surroundings in both décor and design. Modern mountain
ambiance includes native stone and reclaimed wood, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, outdoor deck with timber railings, state-of-the-art outdoor BBQ grill and a full-service bar. Four Points’ design allows for flexibility in planning. “The room has tremendous potential,” says Jim Snyder, vice president of resort services. “ The kitchen facilities are suitable for all levels of events, from a casual buffet to a multiple-course gourmet dinner. Steamboat chef John Shaw, formerly of the James Beard House, heads up the team of culinary experts. The building is fully wired for music
and entertainment, and features a large dance floor. On the lower level of Four Points is a bridal area with a large adjacent bathroom. The piece de resistance, however, may well be that brides who want to be married in the mountains can rest easy, knowing that her venue contains both indoor and outdoor options. Four Points is available for bookings mid-June through the end of September and beginning next year, it will be available for winter weddings, when guests will be delivered to the party in a “snow taxi,” a snowcat–driven taxi. “It’s off the charts great,” says ski area wedding planner Lindsey Yochem.
