elsie Robinson’s sheer joy on the occasion of her marriage to Nicolai Buccino is contagious – the jury who selected the couple’s portrait as the cover of the 2015 edition of Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide chose it for that very reason. “With a husband that sweeps me off my feet, of course my smile reflected photographic love!” says Kelsie. The wedding was held in Strawberry Park at Euzoa Bible Church, where both Kelsie and her husband are ministers. Another winning element of the photo is the bride’s dramatic, classic style. The pearl necklace was made for Kelsie by Semra Ascioglu, an artist in Istanbul, Turkey. The single flower tucked behind her ear was a simple daisy, “a timeless flower, in my opinion,” Kelsie says. Anya Allen & Josh Bryan

looked like a celebrity wedding last June when Anya Allen married Josh Bryan at a private ranch just outside of Steamboat Springs. A classically beautiful blonde, Anya chose an elegant form-fitting Champagne gown and a vintage birdcage veil that added to the allure. She arrived with her parents for the ceremony in a 1950s-era, Champagne-colored Cadillac, lent for the occasion by Donald Braden, a neighbor. The groom added his own debonair air to the day, dressed in a dark suit with a check pattern bowtie. The couple’s infectious smiles and photogenic styles could not help but evoke red carpet moments. Anya is a fifth-generation Yampa Valley resident; her grandfather and great-grandfather started Allen’s Clothing, one of Steamboat Springs’ oldest stores, in 1949. So when she and Josh decided to have their wedding in Steamboat, it was only natural that renowned local personages would contribute to their wedding day. Nancy Kramer, owner of the fondly remembered In Season Bakery, provided the cake and individual desserts. Brent Rowan, celebrated Nashville country songwriter/guitarist, provided the entertainment, along 16

with Loose Change, an established band that comes first to minds of locals when they are looking for authentic Steamboat music. Suzanne Bostrom, a florist of long-time standing, created the elegant pink, white and ivory bouquets. Although early June can be a bit iffy weather-wise, the Bryans’ wedding day was lovely. “We got very lucky,” Anya recalls. “It was the perfect temperature.” The ceremony took place on the bluff at Marabou Ranch, a private community just west of Steamboat. Approximately 200 guests attended the wedding. Both of Anya’s parents, Todd and Robin, walked the bride down the aisle, to the sound of Brent’s guitar. Anya had 11 bridesmaids, who wore an array of blush, pink, and Champagne-colored dresses; some of the groomsmen wore suits from Allen’s Clothing. The reception followed at the Lodge at Marabou, where yet another longtime local legend, Billy Hamil of Steamboat Meat & Seafood Company, provided appetizers for guests to enjoy while the bride and groom took a short timeout from the festivities to cast their rods into the Elk River. for Anya and Josh. They were fly fishing in Silverthorne one day in December 2013, when Josh proposed. During their reception, the water was still high due to late spring runoff, but it was a great photo opp. The bride donned hip waders over her Elizabeth Fillmore gown for the pictures. The guests enjoyed lawn games and a fire pit as the sun set over the valley. The wedding was timed perfectly, as the following day, winter returned to Steamboat. Friends gathered at the Allen house for Sunday brunch, the weather bringing the group together indoors. The storm didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t daunt the guests, many of whom came from Minnesota for the occasion. The honeymoon is still in the planning stages, the couple having Anya Allen is a fifth-generation member of a prominent Steamboat Springs family.

decided shortly after their wedding to move back home to Steamboat. It is, after all, a perfect place for romance.

lazing fall colors formed a dramatic backdrop for the wedding of Morgan Niedelman to Matt Whiteman last fall atop Thunderhead Peak at the Steamboat Ski Area. The bride’s choice of reds, yellows and gold, contrasted by navy blue, complemented the autumnal scenery. Many longtime locals cannot remember a year when the leaves were as vividly colorful as last fall. “We just got really lucky,” Morgan says. “It was really beautiful – 80 degrees without a cloud in the sky.” A childhood friend of the groom played the guitar for guests arriving from all around the country – Denver, Chicago, New York, New Mexico, California, Oklahoma – plus Canada. For many, it was their first-ever gondola ride, and Morgan’s only regret is that she couldn’t see the looks on their faces after their scenic journey. She was getting ready for the ceremony; she and her groom decided that they wouldn’t see each other until the service began. Morgan’s parents escorted her down the aisle, where officiant Paula Salky performed the ceremony. “She

did a really, really good job,” the bride says. “Paula told our story well.” The couple came from mixed religious backgrounds, and blending their two families’ traditions was important. The bride’s mother explained the significance of the chuppah, the canopy under which a couple stands during a wedding. She also sewed the quilt covering for the chuppah, which depicted aspen colors blending into blue skies. The flowers, designed by Lindsey Grannis of One Fine Day, also played off the fall splendor. Texan friend Dan Elwood read a Biblical passage from 1 Corinthians, “Love is patient, love is kind,” representing the groom’s Episcopal roots. Guest seating on Thunderhead lawn offers scenic views of Mount Werner.

It made the whole process so relaxing and easy.” Her advice to other brides: “Just take advantage of the beauty of Steamboat. I hope it means as much to them as it did to Matt and me.” Wedding planner Lindsey Grannis brought the fall theme indoors for the reception dinner in the Champagne Powder Room.

Following the ceremony, guests adjourned to the Thunderhead balcony to watch the sunset. Dinner was served in the adjacent Champagne Powder Room, followed by dancing to the sounds of the Nacho Men. The wedding was stress-free, not only because of the planning efforts of Morgan’s mother-in-law, in conjunction with Lindsey Grannis and Lindsey Yochem, but also because of the couple’s decision to have their wedding in Steamboat. “Our guests had the best time,” Morgan says. “They hiked, fished, 22

verything about Kailey Fischer’s marriage to Eric Gillane centered around their love of the outdoors and Steamboat Springs, from their custom “Rockin’ E&K” brand to Eric’s unique proposal. They climbed a mountain – literally – on the evening they became engaged. It was New Year’s Eve and two of Eric’s brothers, her sister, mom and dad joined them for a hike from the base of the ski area to the top of the gondola, where he proposed. “Then we all slid down Vagabond,” Kailey recalls. Twenty-two months later, their wedding weekend began on Thursday with yoga class on the family’s deck, followed by a barbecue. It continued on Friday with an early-morning drive up Buffalo Pass with out-of-town guests to watch the sunrise and enjoy the incredible fall colors, which happened to be at their peak that weekend. Then came a rehearsal dinner at Eureka, one of the new hot spots on Yampa Street’s restaurant row. Saturday began with a bridal shower, followed by a second, huge barbecue. After that party, Kailey and her 10 bridesmaids had an old-fashioned sleepover on her parents’ living room floor, reminiscent of the days when she was growing up in Steamboat. 24

The ceremony itself took place on Sunday at Alpine Mountain Ranch, an exclusive, private community just east of Steamboat. Kailey’s father, architect Lee Fischer, designed the guest ranch, and Kailey thought when she visited the property for a pumpkin-carving contest as a little girl, “I would love to get married there some day.” Her good fortune continued during the wedding, when she received a downpour of good luck – literally. The clouds broke open just as the couple said their vows; everyone moved in close and started laughing. “It was the highlight of the whole wedding,” Kailey says. “It made it feel close and intimate. It was fun to see how happy everyone was.” The storm passed in time for Kailey and Eric to cruise through town in her father’s red Jeep, arriving at Howelsen Hill in true Steamboat style. The many flags hanging from the rafters in Olympian Lodge added a festive feel to the party. And Olympian Kerry Lynch, one of the guests, was on hand to tell the story behind them – each one represents the country in which a local athlete competed at the Olympics. “Growing up in Steamboat, I went Kailey and Eric enjoy a quiet moment by the Yampa River.

wedding cake and chocolate, vanilla and carrot cupcakes. DJ Steve provided the après-dinner entertainment, accompanied by a light show and a late-night taco bar. Guests came from 13 states, plus Austria, for the occasion. “It was nice to have everybody there,” Kailey says. “Everyone I love was around me.” Although the honeymoon had to be postponed when Eric got a chance to land his dream job as a wildfire fighter in Los Angeles County, the celebration continued. The couple held 26

Family and friends arrived in top hats, wool vaquero jackets, vintage fur coats and cowboy hats, having been encouraged to wear whimsical attire to this Winter Carnival-themed wedding. At the snowy outdoor venue at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp just outside Steamboat Springs, they enjoyed “Hotty Tods,” aka hot toddies, and “Classy Ashleys,”

aka Champagne cocktails, while they waited for the ceremony to begin. Guests sat on hay bales, decorated with colorful flags and red-and-white plaid Turkish towels. The bride walked down the aisle on a burlap runner on which her mother – an artist - had hand-lettered “Step Right Up to the Greatest Love Show.” The bold colors of Ashley’s bouquet stood out against the grayand-white winter landscape. Ashley wore a simple yet elegant

tiered gown by BHLDN, adorned with a braided gold belt, her great aunt’s pearls, a fur jacket from her childhood and a pearl tiara. She completed the ensemble with cowboy boots from F.M. Light & Sons, Steamboat’s oldest retail store. “You can’t have a Steamboat wedding without cowboy boots,” Ashley says. After the ceremony, she donned a knit hat from Anthropology that she and her mother had seen during a shopping trip. Ashley admired it, but another customer had already purchased the store’s only one. Later, as mom and daughter left the store, the buyer came up to her and said, “Here, I want you to have this hat.” The groom’s attire included a cashmere jacket, vest, tweed tie and scarf from J. Crew. He complemented his ensemble later with a fur hat and ear flaps. Following the ceremony, which was set against a backdrop of Mount Werner, guests adjourned to the Steinberg Pavilion, where large white helium balloons were suspended over the colorfully decorated tables to achieve the carnival effect. Old-fashioned carnival booths like a ring toss for beer and a sweets counter offered unique opportunities for

wedding stories reception fun. The photo booth was popular, with instant photos to share. The event program resembled a carnival invitation, and the menu was on an old-fashioned chalkboard. Steamboat’s Winter Carnival, which was held the same weekend as the wedding, inspired the carnival theme. “I wanted to do something different, something unique, fun and whimsical, ” Ashley says. “I wanted our family and friends to experience Steamboat.” Ashley, along with her mother and sister, created much of the wedding décor. “We’d craft all day over several weekends. It was just so much fun,” Ashley says. Their DIY efforts not only helped to make the wedding uniquely theirs, but it also helped the couple to stay within their budget. Combining expectations of a traditional wedding with the desire to host an event that was both exotic and unique – and pulling it off with elegant style – might have been a

challenge. But wedding planner Lindsey Grannis, who understood Ashley’s vision from the onset, had fun helping turn it into reality. Looking back on the planning process, Ashley recalls some initial trepidation on the groom’s part, knowing that many of the couple’s Midwestern friends and family might be taken aback by the unusual approach. In the end, though, the guests thoroughly enjoyed their Steamboat experience, from the Lighted Man at Howelsen Hill to meeting Larry the Camel. “It was the most special, fun day of our lives so far, and we wouldn’t have done it any other way,” Ashley says.

The Wedding Feast

rides often choose to be married in Steamboat Springs to introduce their guests to the area. To that end, sourcing local ingredients for the wedding feast allows family and friends to enjoy the flavors of Northwest Colorado, from locally grown vegetables to trout, beef, lamb and elk. A couple’s menu expresses their individuality, as well as their personal style and story. A bride and groom may want to include a flavor reminiscent of their first date, for instance. For Italian, think antipasto platters instead of traditional hors d’oeuvres. A particular spice could represent Southern, Middle Eastern or Asian heritage or a country

where the wedding couple has traveled. If the wedding style is casual, the reception could feature hors d’oeuvre buffet stations open throughout the evening with cocktail table seating. way to serve appetizers and even dinner. Finally, nothing says thanks for celebrating with us better than a surprise late night snack. Indoor s’mores bars are available—no fire pit needed. Light Up the Night Setting the mood

rom simple votive candles to crystal chandeliers in the reception tent, lighting sets the tone for weddings in 2015. “Lighting is really in right now,” says Steamboat Springs’ wedding planner Lindsey Grannis. “You can really get creative with it.” From the moment guests arrive at a wedding, the mood can be set with lights and candles. Lanterns, from western to Japanese, hung in trees at an evening wedding add magic before the ceremony even begins. Hundreds of votive candles – or Mexican luminarias – can be arranged in elaborate patterns on the lawn to light a walkway or create a border around the wedding area. A tableau of candles at various

heights in different kinds of candlesticks can create an interesting focal point at the entryway to an indoor wedding. At indoor weddings, stage lighting and/or twinkle lights and draped fabric complement flowers to add a dramatic flair as the couple says “I do.” “Lighting is completely unique to every wedding,” says Torey Wodnik of Colorado Event Rentals. For a classic style, crystal chandeliers can be hung in the reception tent, twinkle lights can drape the ceiling or create a backdrop. “The tiny lights create a fairytale look – romantic, soft, elegant,” Torey explains. For a more rustic look, weave grapevine balls into branches, Torey suggests. For one wedding last fall, she

Floating candles under large floral bouquets not only call attention to the flowers, but also add drama to the table. Lighted balloons add a magical touch to the reception area, as do floating paper lanterns in a rainbow of colors, hung at various heights from the ceiling of the reception hall/tent. It’s not uncommon for jewelers to do two or three fittings with a bridal gown or outfit. Trends in jewelry come and go. To make the best choice, several factors should be considered. It all starts with the gown. 1. Color a. Stark white: White pearls, diamonds, cubic zirconia, crystals with sterling or platinum. Be traditional or go for something with deep rich colors like amethysts, rubies, sapphires, tanzanite, blue topaz or emeralds. b. Warm white: Richer white or gold pearls, diamonds, cubic zirconia, crystals or warm gems like aquamarine or jade, in combination with the above. For summer weddings, shells can be gorgeous. Angelite and amazonite are soft blues and greens that would also be pretty with pearls. Pink quartz is soft and lovely. There are exquisite chalcedony stones in many shapes in soft blue-greens. c. Ivory: Ivory pearls, perhaps less sparkle at the neck, stones with muted tones that don’t detract from the dress.
