arah and Nick found themselves in a Routt County fairytale following their Midnight Ranch wedding. When local photographer Cali Frankovic got the couple away from the wedding hubbub for a moment of solitude in an aspen grove, nerves faded and smiles shone bright for a magical photo.

“I just told them to have a moment,” Frankovic explains. “I try to get each couple away from everyone and give them their own space to be together. Every time she looked at him or he looked at her, they would both smile. The photo shows a genuine reaction.” Both veterinarians from Virginia, Sarah and Nick came to Steamboat Springs previously on vacation and fell in love with the Yampa Valley’s natural beauty. The couple held a small, intimate wedding, which made it easier to slip away to a private location for photos – Frankovic was grateful that the couple made pictures a priority on their wedding day. 4 | Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2019

“They trusted me 110%,” Frankovic says. “They were all about the photos, and made sure to make time for the them. They knew that was what they would have when all was said and done. You spend all this time, money, stress and loss of sleep in planning for your wedding, and then it all goes by so fast and it’s over. Photos are what you’re left with.” Frankovic, who has been photographing weddings for 11 years, thrives on the fast-paced, peopleoriented nature of her job. “It’s one of the most important days of someone’s life,” she says. “You have to have a great photographer there that you can trust, so you can be present and in the moment. If you’re not comfortable and relaxed with them, it shows in the photos.” To learn more about Cali Frankovic Photography, visit www.califrankovic.com. l

Following dinner, the dancing kicked off – Downtown Band by Mannequin kept the party going late into the night, and at one point even covered Rebecca’s favorite childhood band, The Backstreet Boys. The bride changed into a two-piece camo crop top to cut a rug to the music. For their honeymoon, Rebecca and Greg traveled to Paris for four days over Christmas, then skied in France, Italy and Switzerland. “It was good to have something to look forward to – there’s so much build-up to the wedding that we wouldn’t have been able to enjoy ourselves on our honeymoon if it was right after,” Rebecca says. Rebecca and Greg live in Baker, but they hope to one day move back to Rebecca’s hometown, Steamboat Springs.

hen a woman who grew up in Oklahoma marries a man who was raised on a ranch, there’s bound to be a little bit of country in the wedding. In this case, country chic.

Sam proposed to Jess two days before Christmas 2017, and soon after, they decided to be married in Steamboat Springs, where they had vacationed over the course of their relationship. Both Catholic, they wanted the ceremony to be held at Holy Name Catholic Church, Steamboat’s dramatic, timber-and-stone edifice. “That was just another thing that made Steamboat the perfect fit because they had this big beautiful Catholic church right in the middle of town,” Jess says. Finding the perfect location for the reception was a bit more difficult. Because Steamboat’s wedding season is short, booking early is key. Jess discovered La Joya Dulce Ranch online, and she knew right away it was the spot. The event barn and arena, grassy fields and its location, just nine miles from Steamboat, made the choice easy. Once the venue was set, the rest of the pieces fell into place. The night before the wedding, the couple hosted a small dinner at Carl’s Tavern for the wedding party and their immediate families. Jess and Sam wanted them to have a chance to get to know each other a little better before the ceremony. After dinner, all 120 guests were

invited to join the party for a nightcap at Carl’s. “That was a great idea; almost everyone who came to the wedding came to the cocktail hour. Whiskey bar, bunch of beers. It was really fun,” Jess says. The wedding day itself was the same date as the Oklahoma University/Texas football game. “That’s a pretty huge deal for people from that part of the country.

Jessica's dress features a cathedral train. www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 19

Some people said they couldn’t believe we got married on OU Texas day. We definitely couldn’t have any orange; that’s Texas colors,” Jess says. Instead, the bride opted for burgundy, ivory and gold – complementing the autumn colors surrounding her venue. The couple had planned to take full advantage of the fall colors by having the reception outdoors. A solid week of rain leading up to the wedding day made them rethink that idea. Ranch owner Kathie Jacobsen and wedding planner Mandy Crabbs responded quickly, installing a floor in the arena for the event, which ultimately took place in both the barn and arena. Jess hadn’t foreseen hiring a wedding planner, thinking she and her mom had it handled, but Kathie encouraged her to hire a day-of planner. “One of the best decisions we made was to hire Mandy. She was so, so helpful. She was always like the calm in the storm. They (Kathie and Mandy) made it pull together without me having to stress,” Jess says. Using Ski Town Gourmet as the caterer was also an excellent choice, Jess says. Chef Dave prepared the meal on-site, and guests said it was one of the best wedding dinners they had eaten.

20 | Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2019

From the Grand March, led by the groom’s mom and aunt, to the couple’s first dance – “In Case You Didn’t Know” by Brett Young – the music reflected the couple’s personal style. “We’re both pretty big country music fans,” Jess says. The cake reflected the couple’s style, as well. The German chocolate groom’s cake was shaped like a Jayhawk for Kansas. Sam’s groomsmen pulled a trick on him: a game they used to play in college. They hid a bottle of Smirnoff Ice in Jess’s garter. Per the rules of the game, Sam had to take a knee and chug it, Jess recalls. “I didn’t think they would pull something on me,” Sam says with a chuckle. About 120 people joined in the fun, more than Jess had anticipated. She credits the fact that they sent out “save the date” invitations seven months in advance for the enthusiastic response. That, and the fact the wedding was in Steamboat. “A lot of people turned it into a family vacation. They went to the hot springs, hiked, shopped and ate downtown,” Jess says. As for the bride and groom, they left the day after the wedding for a honeymoon in Barbados, perhaps the perfect finale to a storybook wedding. Jessica and Sam take a ride in La Joya Dulce's vintage automobile.

he leaves were just starting to turn when Meagan Graves married Michael Carini in the midst of an aspen grove on a stormy afternoon last August. “We had some crazy weather, Meagan recalls. Although it sprinkled a little right before the ceremony started, the couple waited a few minutes and it stopped. It hailed during dinner, and then the skies cleared as the dancing began.

24 | Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2019

The ceremony takes place in an aspen grove. Meagan's bouquet is wrapped in a pendant that once belonged to her grandmother.

“Typical Colorado weather,” Meagan says. The couple slipped away during dinner to take photos against a spectacular sky, complete with dark clouds, lightning and a rainbow. “We got a lot of good luck on our day,” she says. Michael is from New York City; Meagan grew up in Houston, but her parents live part-time in Steamboat Springs, which is how the couple was introduced to the area. “I think it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world,” Meagan says. Even before Michael had

officially proposed, he and Meagan had decided on a Steamboat wedding. They took 2 ½ weeks off for the occasion and spent most of that time in Steamboat. Meagan highly recommends that brides adopt a similar schedule because it allows plenty of time to enjoy the area, spend time with family and relax after the wedding. Before the wedding activities got under way, Meagan and Michael went on hikes with her parents: Zirkel Circle, Saddleback Mountain and Mad Creek trails were www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 25

among their chosen routes – all extensive day hikes. Most of their guests arrived just in time for the wedding weekend, but they still took time to ride the gondola, hike and go river rafting. Meagan’s parents hosted a welcome happy hour at their home in the mountain community on Thursday. Friday night was the rehearsal dinner and cocktails at Aurum Food & Wine. “They did a beautiful job,” Meagan says. Guests not only enjoyed the craft cocktails, food and service, but also strolling down to the river, which borders the restaurant. Meagan wore a gown she purchased in Houston, where she and her sister-inlaw to-be went shopping together. Sparkly Keds from the Kate Spade collection completed her look. “I wear Keds all the time anyway,” she says. “And I really did not want to wear heels that were uncomfortable all night.” Meagan had eight bridesmaids, who wore shades of purple and blue. “I wanted

to keep the colors neutral and classic,” she says. The groom wore a tuxedo from the Paul Smith collection; the groomsmen wore ties from Paul Smith, which is the company where the bride is employed in New York City. Guests were directed to their seats at the reception by signs that were adorned with pictures of the bride and groom at the age that corresponded to their table number. Meagan’s mom and mother-inlaw helped to find and select the couple’s childhood pictures. Meagan and Michael were seated at their own table at the reception, ensuring that they had time together, just the two of them. Mannequin, a Denver-area band, played for the reception. The bride took dance lessons with her father especially for the occasion. He had declined to pick music in advance, but once the dancing had begun, he requested “Love Shack” by the B-52s. The band graciously accommodated

him, and one of the highlights of Meagan’s evening was watching her dad dance. “He danced the entire night,” she recalls. In the tradition of Michael’s alma mater, Colgate University, the last song of the night was “New York, New York,” and dancing to that nostalgic music, surrounded by friends and family, was a perfect end to the day.

Lindsey Passen & Darwin Hunt Saturday, July 28, 2018 Andy Barnhart Photography www.andybarnhart.com

Bride Lindsey Passen beside Lake Catamount

O

ne of the most beautiful Steamboat Springs weddings of 2018 started in an unlikely place – the dating app “Tinder.”

One night in late 2014, Darwin Hunt was leaving an NHL game in Anaheim, California and came across an appealing profile on the app: "Lindsey Passen – Midwestern girl looking for a gentleman. I love camping, snowboarding and fishing." “I had just moved from Chicago to Newport Beach, and had been dating around a bit not looking for anything serious,” Lindsey says. When Darwin asked her out, she initially turned him down, saying it was getting late. “He said, ‘What are you, a pumpkin?’ And I said, ‘Challenge accepted,’” Lindsey says. The two met up at a Newport Beach restaurant and instantly clicked. While on vacation at a family farm in Wittenburg, Wisconsin, Darwin hatched a plan to pop the question. He took Lindsey fishing by the lake and asked her there, while his brother-in-law, Jordan, secretly took photos from the tall grass nearby. The couple decided on Steamboat Springs for the venue because Lindsey had been coming here every year since the age of 2. For the rehearsal dinner, wedding guests rode the gondola up to the Champagne Powder room atop Thunderhead Peak and donned semicasual Western garb. “We wanted our guests to have the Steamboat experience,” Lindsey says. “The setting was incredible.” That night, the majority of guests stayed at the Steamboat Grand. When it came time for the big day, members of the wedding party got ready in their rooms. “We really had being in the moment in the forefront Bright flowers add color to the ceremony.

of our minds,” Lindsey says. “I finished writing my vows that day, so that was the only stressful thing for me.” The ceremony was held at the edge of Lake Catamount, and Lindsey was concealed by an entourage of people holding umbrellas as she walked to the

location. “My favorite moment was seeing Darwin’s big tear roll down his cheek as I was walking down the aisle,” Lindsey says. To honor Lindsey’s family, the couple stood under a traditional Jewish huppa adorned with flowers provided by Lindsey Grannis of One Fine Day Productions.

“The flowers were insane!” Lindsey P. recalls. “Everyone was commenting on how gorgeous they were.” At the wedding reception, held in a nearby tent, the couple danced to Elton John’s “Your Song,” played by their wedding band, The Groove Merchants. “They blew it out of the park playing that song for us,” Darwin says. “We were crying and singing along to it.” In planning the wedding, the couple worked with Nikki Knoebel of Catamount and Lindsey Grannis of One Fine Day Productions. Lindsey P. works as a corporate event and wedding planner, so she was grateful to put the planning in someone else’s hands for once. “Nikki was amazing to work with – very accommodating – and allowed us to do a tasting of their The multi-tiered cake stands atop a rustic wood platform.

food beforehand,” she says. “Lindsey Grannis’s attitude meshed with mine. She’s a go-getter; she just took my aesthetic and ran with it. Every time I said that I wanted something, she was like, ‘Oh, I’ve known that person for 25 years, I’ll get that set up.’” “It was perfect,” Darwin adds. “Every aspect of it was so well executed, so well done.” The couple waited until February 2019 for an adventurous 2 ½ week honeymoon in Patagonia. “We would recommend Steamboat to anyone,” Darwin says. “We want to come back there in ten years to renew our vows.”

Wedding stories

Alicia Pope & John Chickering Saturday, August 25, 2018 Marianne Brown Photography www.mariannebrownphotography.com

O

utdoorsy Colorado couple Alicia Pope and John Chickering tied the knot in their favorite ski town this past summer.

Alicia and John met while working at the same company in Madison, Wisconsin, and decided to move together to Alicia’s hometown in Denver. In June 2017, John suggested that they hike Silverthorn’s Buffalo Mountain to take photos with his drone. Near the top of the mountain, after positioning the drone to capture the moment, John set down the controller and pulled out an engagement ring. “We have some awesome drone footage of that day, complete with tons of giggles,” Alicia says. Alicia and John settled on their favorite ski town, Steamboat Springs, as the wedding location. “We decided we wanted to do it in a place where we loved to hike, snowboard and party,” John says. “The excellent snow, great vibes of the town and the awesome atmosphere in the summer were all things we loved.”

To plan the wedding, the couple worked with Alex Mathisen and Lee Calihan of SoulSpark Events. “They were so wellinformed on the vendors and venues, knew exactly how to get things done, and totally matched our flow,” Alicia says. The couple held a family dinner at Truffle Pig the Thursday before the wedding, followed by a casual, welcome party/ rehearsal dinner at Howelsen Hill Picnic Area that Friday. All guests were invited to the Friday gathering, and this allowed the couple to catch up with old friends who had traveled from all over while kids played in the playground and adults played lawn games and volleyball. That night, most wedding guests stayed at the Sheraton or the Steamboat Grand. The morning-of, the bride and her bridesmaids got ready in the Steamboat Grand penthouses, and flower girls were set up with crowns and petal baskets that incorporated rosemary, lavender, eucalyptus and sage. Alicia and John’s ceremony was intentional. “We had heard www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 37

advice that you plan the ceremony for yourselves, and the reception for everyone else,” John says. The couple crafted their own vows and planted a ceremonial peach tree, which they later moved to their own yard, symbolizing the planting of roots in their new life together. As a clean-eating blogger, Alicia’s central focus during wedding planning was the food. Food-related elements were incorparated into the wedding floral arrangements to fit the foodie theme, and artichokes served as sustainable placeholders. For the reception dinner menu, Alicia and John chose elk to add local flare, along with chicken saltimbocca, beef tenderloin and Portobello Napoleon as a vegan option. “We were grateful that the mountain allowed us to customize the dinner sides and the bar menu to meet

everyone’s dietary needs,” Alicia says. Steamboat Baker provided a fully glutenfree dessert table. “Rachel Radetsky from Steamboat, along with Alex and Lee from Soulspark, were beyond helpful and so great to work with in terms of coordinating the movement of people, tables, microphones, gifts, signs and everything for the reception,” Alicia says. John is a musician, so the couple prioritized reception music and hired the Great Family Reunion Band to keep the dance floor packed. “They truly did keep everyone on the dance floor all the way ‘til last call – I even crowd-surfed in my wedding dress,” Alicia says. At the last minute, Alicia and John decided to plan a classic honeymoon in Bocas Del Toro, Panama, where they went scuba diving and ceviche-tasting. Alicia and John stroll along a path at the Steamboat Ski Area following their wedding.

kiing – and snowboarding – were at the heart of the wedding of Katie Gosiewski and Jason Blair at the Steamboat Ski Area.

Katie grew up skiing with her dad, and they continued that tradition on her wedding day, when she and her father skinned up to the knoll above Thunderhead and skied down to the

ceremony. It was one of the highlights of the wedding, she recalls. Katie, an elementary school teacher in South Routt County, often hits the slopes with Jason, who is a snowboarder. “It was hard on my family,” Katie jokes, referring to the rivalry between the two sports. Jason proposed to Katie in the Zirkel Wilderness during a hike in August 2017. They had been together for nine years prior to their marriage. Their wedding weekend officially started with a welcome party at the Steamboat Base Club, where fireworks formed the backdrop. People kidded the couple about who they knew that

could pull that off, but in reality, it was coincidence. Less formally, about 40 guests kicked off the wedding day with a ski party. They wore colorful leis, which not only added to the festive atmosphere, but also kept everyone together. When they were traversing along Last Chance, the catwalk that leads back to the main ski area from North St. Pat’s expert terrain, the wedding party encountered another group of skiers and riders who were having a celebration of their own. When they heard it was Jason and Katie’s wedding day, they shared their beers and sang to the couple. “It was really random,” she recalls. www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 43

Katie was having so much fun on the slopes that she needed to be reminded more than once that it was time to get ready for the ceremony, which was held on the third floor deck at Thunderhead. Katie changed into her bridal gown, topped with a soft, furry coat, while Jason wore a cowboy hat and bolo tie. “He’s from Boston, mind you,” Katie quipped. Her brother officiated, adding a personal, familial

touch. While the bride and groom were saying their “I do’s,” snowcats happened to be out grooming, which led to fresh corduroy for the postnuptial descent. Back at the base, the wedding party changed at the Steamboat Grand before climbing aboard the “Just Married” gondola for the reception in the Champagne Powder Room at Thunderhead. About 120 people attended the event, many of them from Boston. After an unforgettable sunset and a feast of Colorado fare – trout, buffalo and chicken – the renowned bluegrass band Lil Smokies (think “Ms. Marie”) played until midnight. Where did the couple go for their honeymoon? Heli-skiing in Canada, of course.

While blush, ivory, sage green and muted tones have dominated brides’ palettes for the past several seasons, 2019 is the year to add a pop of color to the mix. “Let’s go for color,” says Lindsey Grannis, wedding planner and florist at One Fine Day Productions. Color accents enliven the ambiance and complement the bride’s natural beauty. Adding brighter hues can be accomplished creatively. 1. Choose colorful flowers (or at least add one or two accents) for bridal bouquets, table arrangements and boutonnieres. The bridal bouquet could be a blend of rich jewel tones: amethyst, gold, sapphire and ruby. 2. Incorporate color in the décor: candles, napkins, lighting or favors, for example.

3. Select a brighter hue or color range for bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s ties.

Sam Josserand's bright blue satin tie and colorful corsage stand out against his dark blue suit.

Meagan Graves' bridesmaids wear a palette of blue that pops in front of the aspens. www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 49

Velvet ruby heels with jewels and gold are a step away from the traditional white.

Sparkly Keds reflect a rainbow of colors.

4. Invite guests to wear color. One invitation to a recent wedding read, “Fancy and fierce! Bright colors and bowties are encouraged. Please no solid black ensembles.” Sound a little pushy? The resulting photographs were festive, warm and dramatic.

5. Colorful shoes – or sparkly Keds – contrast nicely with a white/ivory wedding dress. After all, the state where you have chosen to be married is called “Colorful Colorado.”
