This letter may be my favorite task as executive director of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council. I absolutely love this place, and I love sharing it with our visitors. Steamboat is a wonderful resort with a true Western heritage. Cowboys walk down Lincoln Avenue, intermingling with skiers. This combination creates the warm, friendly atmosphere. While here, I hope you’ll take in the long views from our town, either west to the Sleeping Giant, or south toward the Flat Tops. These sweeping valley views inspire locals and visitors alike. And it’s this emotion that reminds us how important art is to our communities. Luckily for us, passionate and enthusiastic artists have chosen to live in this valley. Our downtown boasts an art museum, galleries exhibiting local, regional and national artists, and restaurants and retailers displaying local artwork. Thank you for visiting us this winter. Cover Artist — Jim Gmeiner When Jim Gmeiner looks through the lens of his Nikon D700 at a pack of indigenous grouse or a typical mountain sunset, he sees detail, feels passion and even takes in the smells of his surroundings. With his senses at their optimal level, he puts every bit of energy into his photographs. “The sensation is being able to see these creatures moving in the snow, uninhibited and just doing what they normally do,” he says of the photo of two bull elk that graces the cover of this “Yampa Valley Arts & Gallery Guide” edition. “It was the intensity in their eyes and seeing them trying to figure out where to go.” It took Gmeiner nearly 100 frames to capture the first-ever photographic cover of this publication. “I had been watching these elk for days waiting for the right moment. On my way to Denver one morning, I pulled over and waited about 20 minutes for them to come straight towards me.” Gmeiner has respect for his subjects, along with a professional’s grasp of the technical aspects of photography. He first was introduced to the medium during his orthopedic residency at the University of Wisconsin Madison. A mentor and fellow surgeon showed him the techniques of Ansel Adams, taught him to develop film and even assisted with the set-up of a darkroom. He soon was merging his studies of science with his passion for photography, from clicking the shutter to printing and framing his work. Now his senses are always on patrol so he can dodge behind the garage to capture the elk migration in his backyard or tirelessly wait on the roadside for just the right moment. “(The elk) are just beautiful today,” he says on an overcast cold November morning. Gmeiner has lived full-time in Steamboat Springs for nearly 20 years. While consulting in the medical/legal field in Wisconsin, he focuses his time in Steamboat on capturing the moments that surround him, including the years his three children were skiing competitively. Kate, his wife of 38 years, acts as his adviser, critic, greatest fan and best friend. A Brief Guide To Buying Art

Purchasing artwork does not have to be a daunting experience. Yes, fineart purveyors have their own lingo and yes, the factors that determine the worth of art are numerous. In the end, though, it boils down to the answer to a simple question:
Of the three, the first is the one that counts, Stocks explains. “Your art is going to most likely travel with you throughout your life. It means something. It will probably be passed down through generations. It’s a special purchase: it should grab your heart.”
Do you love it? Do you have to have it?
That said, a number of factors play into the worth of artwork: Is the artist still producing work or is he/she deceased? Sometimes, though certainly not always, Stocks says, artists’ work is worth more posthumously than it was while they were alive.
“Is it a fair price?” asks Shirley Stocks, artist and co-owner of Wild Horse Gallery. “How much do you love it?” Buyers generally select a piece of art for one of three reasons: 1. It’s a piece they love. 2. It complements their furnishings. 3. They see potential in it as an investment.

A&G G The artist’s reputation, the size of the piece and the quality of the work also play into the value. Dealing with a reputable gallery helps to ensure that a piece of work is fairly priced. When it comes to purchasing prints, the specific number in a series is of less importance today than it was in the past, says Joel Schulman, digital printmaker and owner of PhotoGraphicsArt. In the case of digital imaging, prints can be made on demand, so the concept of “limited editions” has less meaning than it did in the past. However printmakers like Susan Oehme of Oehme Graphics, who employ intaglio and monotype techniques, produce prints
in such a fashion that the term “limited edition” is still very much relevant. Whether a buyer can change a frame is a common question Stocks hears. While the answer is yes, additional expense may be incurred. Another frequent question is, “How would I get it home?” A handful of companies in Steamboat Springs specializes in shipping and can pack even delicate glasswork securely. Regardless of the medium, the frame that surrounds it or the method of getting it home, purchasing a work of fine art is most satisfying when it’s a case of love at first site.

A Glossary Of Terms Related To Fine-Art Prints Archival paper: Paper that does not have chemical residue in it. Because it is acid-free, it retains color and doesn’t deteriorate like other papers do. Canvas print: A digital image printed
on canvas, rather than archival paper. Some artists will paint on top of an archival print to give it dimensionality. Typically, canvas prints are protected by a UV coating.
Certificate of Authenticity: Verifies that a print has been reproduced according to the artist’s standards. Also indicates the date, means and location of the reproduction.
Giclée print: (French for “spray of ink”) more appropriately called an archival pigment print. The color is created by pigment, rather than dyes. When stored or displayed correctly, archival digital prints will last more than 100 years. They can be printed on many substances, from paper to canvas.
Intaglio: Any of various printing techniques using an etched or engraved plate.
Monotype: The only print made from a
metal or glass plate on which a picture is painted in oil color, printing ink, or the like.

New Gallery Opens At The Depot The Steamboat Springs Artist Member Gallery is opening this winter, giving individual artists the opportunity to display their works for a month at a time. The newly expanded and remodeled space is devoted exclusively to local artists. “The nice thing about this particular gallery is that it’s open to new ideas from the artists. The goal is to give artist members an unfiltered space to show whatever it is they’re working on,” says Park Myers, artistic director of the Arts Council. “Whatever their new foray, it’s their constant place to exhibit.” “One of the goals is for artists to be engaged with their shows, whether that’s through demonstrations, talks or chanc-

es to meet the artist,” Myers says. The Visual Arts Committee of the Arts Council, which conceived the idea for the new gallery, also oversees it. “There’s actually quite a bit of wall space for a small area. It’s suitable for paintings, sculptures and jewelry,” says Sharon S. Pace of the Visual Arts Committee. The Artist Member Gallery is one of three public spaces within The Depot. The main gallery hosts larger exhibits by local, regional and national artists, while the Baggage Room is dedicated to performing arts, from theater to dance. “We’re happy to have more than one venue for the arts at the Depot,” Myers says. “There’s room for a lot of great art!”

Colorado Group Realty — 509 Lincoln Ave. You might be tempted to walk by this stop because it’s basically an office, but that would be a mistake! These particular real estate agents have a passion for art, and the featured work here is as varied as it is remarkable.
