What is your style inspiration? Honestly, what inspires me the most is the clothes themselves. When I see a piece of clothing or even an accessory that has personality or is really unique, I just get so excited to put it on and try to find an outfit that really compliments all of its glory. How do you identify your personal style? My personal style is driven by what mood i’m in. That’s the beautiful thing about clothes. Some days I might be in the mood to look like a fierce fashion chameleon, other days I might be in the mood to look super casual and comfortable. Ultimately my personal style is identified by clothes that make me feel good in my own skin, When I wear things like make me feel good, I think some sort of inner confidence brings my personal style to the forefront, clothes that makes you feel good will make you look good on you no matter how it fits.
“
I might be in the mood to look super casual and comfortable
What do you want our readers to know about you? If I had to put them in a list with no particular order they would go as follows: 1.) When shopping for clothes, I believe all clothing stores offer something of potential interest. There are stores that may not sell clothes in my size, but they might have a bangin pair of earrings with my name on them, or even a hat that might be the missing piece to my next outfit. 2.) I’m super friendly, so if you ever see me on the street, come say hello I’d love to meet you. 3.) If i’m ever in doubt about the way one of my outfits look, I put on one of my favorite necklaces or put on a bangin lipstick and that generally fixes any doubt I had. 4.) Makeup is a huge part of my life. I love learning/talking about new makeup recommendations, ideas, tips, and other ideas from people. I believe there’s always room to learn and improve your technique so trying new makeup and talking about makeup is something I am always willing to gab about. 5.) thrift stores are my best friend. I find they offer the best selection of unique pieces, especially for plus size.
One of our contributors (Shawna from Chubby Cartwheels) told us about you, and we love her for it! How did you get involved in the plus size fashion community? It kind of happened on accident, originally one of my best friends had a blog where they would post their outfits. They would get flooded with messages from supporters and people that truly and genuinely appreciated their spirit. I always got a warm feeling from it and wanted to express myself the same way, I just didn’t know how. So one day I used my camera to my best abilities and started posting pictures of my outfits and tried to give advice on how to style the clothes and where I got them. From there, my posts began trending on the internet and it kinda went from there. The
people that have followed me and shown me support are really how I got involved. Getting to know people like Shawna from Chubby Cartwheels or even Alysse from Ready-to-Stare, I just consider myself lucky. Without my followers Shawna and Alysse wouldnt even know who I am. What are your future goals and where would you like to be in the next five years? My future goals definitely include becoming a better artist, being able to collaborate with brands, and grow the platform I have. I also really want to be able to inspire more indiviuals to dress/ be the way they want to, no one can be a better “you” than you, so embrace yourself.

Shirt: H&M Pants: Thrifted Levis 505 Shoes: Floresheim Cardigan: Guess Scarf: Charlotte Russe Bag: Steve Madden Belt: Thrifted Brown Braided Belt. This is an outfit I would wear if I had to go run around town to and from a clients house or even to go get lunch with some friends. Looks like this are my favorite because I am dressed up enough to go out during the day and then I can swap the cardigan out for a blazer for a dressy, yet casual nighttime look to go out on the town.

Shirt: Thrifted White Button Down Bottom: American Eagle Outfitters Shawl: H&M Shoes: Thrifted Hat: Forever 21 Necklace: H&M This is an outfit that is just inspired by dressing up yet still looking unique. I like how simple the white button down is with the black denim. The shawl just adds an extra element to the look. Instead of opting for a blazer or cardigan, the shawl offers a different texture to the look giving it just a bit more edge.

Jacket: Levis Pants: H&M Sweater Ready-to-Stare Hat: Married to the Mob Shoes: NIKE This look is inspired by comfort “How can I look cute but still be able to breathe, eat, and walk around comfortably”. I like this because it’s really colorful without being too “in your face” the sweater is super awesome because it has the world “GIRLS” in huge colorful font, then I have green pants and a light blue denim jacket and a red hat. yet it’s super complimentary. It’s something I like to wear on a day off when I don’t have much to do except run to the laundromat or do some grocery shopping and still look cute and comfy but not too bland.

I found this shirt at a goodwill back when I lived in Washington and it’s one of my favorite things I own. High shoulder pads are always complimented with high waisted pants, So i’ve done exactly that. classic black, Letting the shirt be the focus. It’s the perfect day to night look.

KNOW YOUR Measurments
This should be a rule of thumb for all you shopping endeavors, but especially when it comes to shopping for your costume pieces! Being able to compare your measurements against the costumes will help you to get the best fit.
Understand that Costumes Often Run Small
This tip plays hand-in-hand with knowing your measurements! When shopping for your Halloween ensemble it is important to remember they are generally running off size, and it is a good idea to read reviews, know your measurements, and consider sizing up!

Shopping as a Plus Size Babe on a regular basis can be a scary situation, but when the added pressure of finding a Halloween costumes comes in to play the feeling can be elevated to nothing short of horrifying! SKORCH has put together some key shopping tricks and treats along with a where to buy guide to make sure your Halloween costumes shopping experience is boo-tiful!
28 Vol.9 Issue 5 october 2015 | SKORCHMAG.COM |
Don’t be Afraid to Explore Ebay, Etsy, Amazon, and Google. There is nothing wrong with seeing what you can find on websites like Ebay, Etsy, Amazon, or even doing a general Google search! Who knows what unique deals you could uncover form the internet’s crypts?
Use what is Already in Your Closet
Using what is already in your closet is a great way to save yourself some money, and to give you a reason to wear a piece from your closet that hasn’t been pulled out since 2000! Paired with some cheap Halloween accessories (Perhaps a witch’s hat, or maybe some fake blood?) from any party store, and you have got yourself a Halloween look from items you already owned!
“
This of course leaves the option of shopping for costume pieces from your everyday clothing stores!
Halloween Shopping in the Stores
The potential for finding an actual Halloween costume from the ”go-to” Halloween stores is slim to none over a size 20. Party City offers size “Plus” which is essentially a size 18/20, Spirit Halloweens “Plus” size levels out to be about 14/16, and Walmart offers plus size options up to a size 20 in Costumes, (but 6x in regular sizes if you are up to getting creative!)

H&H/ Dreams by Danielle On September 10th Australian designer, Harvest Powell of Melbourne, had her first showing of her SS16 Hope and Harvest collection at NYFW Plus. The collection titled “Holcyon Days” was described by Harvest Powell herself as a collection that can go “From work desk to dinner!” Right on trend with the 70’s madness that took over the runway Halcyon Days is a chic collection that can be dressed down for casual daytime activities, and then re-styled to have a high end evening vibe. “There is something in this collection for everyone-no matter how different your style may be!” said Australian blogger Kobi Jae of the blog Horror Kitsch Bitch.
Immediately following Hope and Harvest collection at NYFWPlus Danielle Ferguson presented her SS16 collection. Dreams by Danielle premier showing of Animal Instincts was a complete hit, and left the showroom wanting more! While only working as a designer for 3 years Danielle Ferguson has already begun to add some impressive notches in to her belt. This NYFWPlus showing was filled with vibrate, and unique colors paired with wild animal prints. Dreams by Danielle served some first class sass during this first night of NYFWPlus shows, and has defiantly left her mark as a brand to watch in the future.

PLUS Night Out On September 17th something ground breaking took place during the end NYFW – Plus Night Out 2015, and SKORCH was front row as it all went down. Officially listed as a NYFW event this massive fashion show case brough together the “Who’s who” of the plus size fashion industry. All in one room were some of plus sized best models, company officials, bloggers, and media. This was an opportunity for both the brands to meet their customers, and for the everyday shoppers to see the clothes they will be
shopping live in action. The brands to walk the runway during Plus Night Out 2015 were Rue 21, Jill Alexander Designs , Serita Bell, Tru Diva Designs, Qristyl Frazier Designs , Wardrobe by William Henry Rawls ,Miraclesuit/Magicsuit, and Longitude Swimwear. A huge thank you to Producer/ Event Coordinator Jovanna Reyes for bringing PNO to NYFW this year, and every year. It is because of forces like Joanna’s that is helping to take plus size fashion to the main stream.

SMART Glamour “All Bodies Are Good Bodies” that is what the signs read at the closing of the Smart Glamour show in Manhattan on September 18th. Designer Mallorie Dunn mission is to show us that fashionable clothing can be shown on models of all sizes with no singular focus on straight or plus size. SKORCH is here to conform that this mission is a true success, and mainstream brands should take notes from this indie genius! At a point where diversity is desperately being asked for across the industry Smart Glamour is on the ground level hearing everything
you are asking for. An audience of bloggers, media, and industry officials watched on September 18th as models of ALL sizes, races, backgrounds strutted down the runway in this season’s most recent Smart Glamour designs. One model in particular may seem extra familiar as Lifetimes TV network Star Sabrina Servance of Big Woman Big Love ! This event was not only about great fashion, but body positivity, and all patrons were welcome to meet and mingle with officials from the body positive organization Realize Your Beauty!

Honor my
curves
As we head into Autumn and Winter, the days get darker and sometimes our mindsets take a turn as we go into hibernation mode, eat festive meals, and mourn the end of summer. These ladies remind us to enjoy our bodies at every stage along our journeys through life, wear the clothes we want to, and forget the comments from others, as those comments are irrelevant to our self-perception. We each
deserve to feel wonderful today, to break the fashion “rules”, and be ourselves authentically! So let’s take that with us through the changing seasons.

Thamarr, the beauty behind the amazing blog www.musingsofacurvylady.com, says: “To Honor My Curves means to love my body and appreciate all the wonderful things it can do regardless of how others may view it. I’m constantly trying to improve myself; being a better person, sister, daughter, and friend. Sometimes that means improving my personal health and wellbeing. Regardless of where I am on my journey of self-improvement I show appreciation and love to my body. I refuse to wait until I reach a certain size or shape to determine if I will be happy, beautiful or stylish. I honor my curves by clothing my
body with beautiful garments that tickle my fancy and no one else’s. Getting dressed up is a lot more fun when you let go of ignorant rules created by unimportant people and start getting dressed based off the novel idea that you simply love it and not with the intention to make someone else feel more comfortable or to look smaller. So for me, that means wearing bold bright colors and prints in all different kinds of silhouettes, and truly enjoying fashion because everyone deserves to feel amazingly fierce in their clothes.” Photo by Paula Young Photography

I struggled with accepting myself my whole life. I was never thin enough, never funny enough, never nice enough. I never fit in. I spent so much of my younger years punishing myself for liking the things I liked, looking the way I did, and being the size I was. I can tell you from experience that sadness and self doubt only breed more sadness and self doubt. It can be a horribly crippling vicious cycle. You are the only person who can break that cycle. I’m not sure how or why, but I finally decided to give who I was a chance several years ago. I embraced my size, my style, my personality, everything that I was. I quickly realized I didn’t hate this person. I actually liked her. I love who I’ve let myself become. I’ve developed confidence I never thought I’d have, and at the risk of sounding TOTALLY CHEESY, it is mostly because of all of you. Because of the constant love, encouragement, and support I receive from you all on a constant basis, it fuels my self love fire even more. A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to model for the cover of Skorch Magazine, a beauty and lifestyle magazine that caters to woman of ALL sizes. This was such a big accomplishment for me, and I can’t thank you all enough for giving me the courage to get to this point. Thank you all for allowing me to be who I want to be, and supporting me for it. I know I’m not for everyone, but what would our world be without a few weirdos here and there”

the ideal
body
how it should be? “My body is ideal because reflects my self-confidence and my strong spirit, despite the nasty looks and body bashing”
I was in the middle of my time off after my knee surgery watching TV in hospital, when I heard this designer saying disgusted watching Adele´s picture “You shouldn’t wear that if you want to look and have the ideal body”.
Miriam Gutierrez Solis Housewife Mexico
Is pretty normal –still way wrong- that fashionistas and fashion designers in Latinamerica (among others in the Industry) destroy women selfsteem. They think they have the right and is amazing to tell women they are ugly and fat just because. Right there, I my face, my nurse was teary eyed, and that was enough to fuel the super hero that is in every one of us. I´ve decided to ask my followers what they think was the “ideal body”. 16 Latinas from all over Latin America tell what they feel and here are the results:
