North Shore Farmers Markets
F
armers markets offer a wealth of options from vegetable staples to prepared, gourmet goods. Chicagoland has dozens ranging in size from just a few vendors to bustling complexes of tents, tables, and tasty produce. Farmers markets are a great weekend activity for families where children can enjoy some time outdoors and adults can catch up on the week’s news while browsing colorful produce and homemade delights. One of the most well known in the area is the Downtown Evanston Farmers Market, a Sunday market situated on Oak Avenue. With over 60 vendors this year, the market continues to expand, offering aged cheeses, grass-fed beef, fresh made crepes, tamales (Cocina Azteca) and fresh baked bread from vendors like Bennison’s Bakery and Kinnikinnick Farm. Herb vendors, fruit stalls, and vegetable growers from the Great Lakes area bring a mix of beets, turnips, strawberries, blueberries, kale, and tomatoes from field to table between 7:30am and 1:00pm until the first week of November. Expanding on the success of the downtown market, the Ridgeville Park District operates a mid-week farmers market to serve the needs of south Evanston and north Chicago. Vendors like Katz Cookies and Lyons Fruit Farm offer up their wares and produce from 3:30pm until sunset. Located at the intersection of Ridge Ave. and South Blvd., the market opens up in June and runs until October. Stop by and also catch the “Concert in the Park” series beginning July 11. If you happen to miss the Saturday Farmers’ Markets in town and need your fresh goods--The Skokie Farmers Market (on Sundays) at 5127 Oakton St. adds more variety to the North Shore food landscape. Pickled foods, vegetables by the bushel, cheeses, berries, and autumn squash are just some of the delights one can expect to see. In operation since 1975, the market begins mid-June and continues to the end of October. Stalls open up at 7:30am on Sunday and wrap up just past noon, so arrive early for the best selection. For the serious supporter of sustainable eating, there’s the CSA: Community-supported Agriculture. Started as a way to offset urbanization, CSA programs have been around for decades. In short, CSAs are membership organizations, with households buying “shares” of the growing season’s crops. Each week, members pick up whatever is ripe and ready which may range from potatoes and peppers to garlic, okra, and squash. Because they ensure buyers for farmers, produce from CSAs is cheaper than most farmers markets.

uster Fair, an Evanston summer staple, began in 1972 with a simple plan to bring more attention to Custer Avenue area businesses. Eve Noonan, a Custer Avenue building owner, remembers that first event as a “really amateur street fair.” “We had to fight hard just to close that one block of Custer, our decorations were rags hung from ropes strung from buildings to the railroad track area. There were about 15 crafts or antique booths,” she recalls. Despite its humble beginnings, the Custer Fair, has blossomed into an important event for south Evanston businesses and the community as a whole, attracting more than 70,000 participants in 2013 and well over 120,000 in 2017 under the direction of Tammy Szostek (sister of John Szostek- the original founders of Custer Fair and Piccolo Theatre). There are now more than 400 booths at the fair, offering original art and craft work, antiques, commercial and the tantalizing fare of local restaurateurs. “It has retained the unique character of the original event,” says festival director Tammy Szostek. “Friendly, social, artistic, family-friendly, fun and more importantly - brings custom-
Custer Fair ers to our shopping district. ” During its 47 year run, the Custer Fair has established many “fan favorite” performances. “In fact, Custer Fair has become a tradition for many Evanston families. We have many parents who bring their children and the grandparents to the events as a way to celebrate the summer and father’s-day,” adds Szostek. Custer Fair will host three performance stages throughout both days. The Main stage located at Chicago/Main, The Guitar Works Stage at Custer/Washington and The School of Rock located in the ECO village parking lot. The music stage, in the past , has featured renowned artists like Corky Siegel, as well as the much-loved Native American Pow Wow performed by The American Indian Center, which has been a prominent feature of the Custer Fair for the past 46 years—However this year, Custer Fair has responded to requests for new entertainment and bands by the community, businesses, and the attendees. Depending on the feedback and response, Custer Fair will always make changes to meet the needs, likes, and tastes of its attendees, followers, and community members. “After all, Custer Fair is designed for the

But not everything has changed —attendees will be pleased to know that during the Fair --favorites such as Kraig Kenning and Mark Cleveland of Evanston as well as new artists Eliana Weston and Joshua Michael Neil(Country), Brothers and Wine Band (Classic Rock), Mad Man Band, Saturday June Band, The Night Burners, Shout Section Big Band(Jazz), as well as many other rhythm and blues bands are performing. Make sure to stop by enjoy great fare and even local libations from Sketchbook Brewing Co. which is custom crafting the Custer Fair Brew- a much anticipated craft beer returning this year again. We are also serving hard cider at our Chicago beer truck from local company Northshore Cider Company. And of course, the fair wouldn’t even exist without the business community it supports. Hottest Hair Trends for Summer 2018
T
By Sarah Lyons he warmer months have arrived and this season it’s all about simple, natural beauty when it comes to hair. Read on for some tips on how to get the hottest looks for your locks this summer.
Beachy waves Long beautiful locks never go out of style. Whether you wear it in an updo, straight and sleek, or in waves, long, healthy hair is always beautiful. This summer try wearing it in relaxed textured waves whether you have natural body or need a curling iron to get this look. “Work with what you have.” says Carly Quist, stylist at Zed Salon in New York City. “Looser, softer, waves makes for a simple look for summer.” Retro locks This look is inspired by 1970’s trends with a modern flair and it is easy to achieve. Just put in rollers, let them set, and brush for that natural, healthy look with lots of body. “We are seeing long softly worn bangs that are cheek bone or jaw bone length this season.” says Quist “They really give a 70’s vibe.” Pixie and longer pixie A pixie cut is a great way to show off beautiful facial features and is easy to care for. This summer a longer pixie is trending. If you have had a pixie in the past and are wanting to grow it to a longer style, this is a great time to do so as this look is popular this summer. “Use a serum or leave in conditioner to push back the hair and open up the face.” suggests Quist.

Jaw length bob The bob is a classic and always will be. Bobs are a great versatile look because they look good both wavy or straight. Quist says “Jaw length bobs are popular right now - a sleeker look with a little texture on the ends is what I am seeing a lot.” The sleek updo
If you have a night on the town planned and want to do something special, try a sleek updo. This look will show off feminine features while giving a clean, sleek look that won’t distract from your dress.

Your Perfect Closet in 5 Simple Steps By Heather Davis
I
t’s no secret that what everyone needs is a spacious, well-organized closet. Now that Winter is over, it is the perfect time of year to peek into your wardrobe and turn it into perfection. Step 1: Just Get Rid Of It The first step is always the hardest, but the most necessary: the closet edit! Take out every piece of clothing you own, and decide what you will and won’t wear in the future. Everybody has that one shirt with sentimental value, but when threefourths of your closet is “meaningful” to you, you have a problem. Keep your must-haves and classics that never go out of style. Donate whatever you haven’t worn in a while if you can’t find a way to rejuvenate it!
Step 2: Hang It Up This may sound like a funny tip, but it’s an important one: invest in tons of the same-style hangers. Whether you choose plastic, wooden, or wire, make sure you only use that kind. Why? Because that will maximize the space, of course! Besides that, multiple types of hangers will just make your closet look messy, and who needs that? Step 3: Sort It Out Now the fun begins: it’s time to sort out your clothes! I am a tad crazy when it comes to closet organization - I sort my tanks, short-sleeve tops, dresses, longsleeve tops, sweaters, and jackets by style, sleeve length, fabric, and color. You, however, can sort it however you like! Do whatever makes sense to you.
Step 4: No Walk-In Closet? No Big Deal! Buy a sweater organizer. Fill this with the clothing and accessories that don’t need to be hung, like jeans and leggings, athletic wear, handbags, and belts. You’ll be amazed at how much space you will save. Step 5: Keep It Contained Scenario #1: You have sneakers, sandals, heels, flats, and boots of all heights, and need something a bit bigger than the traditional shoe rack. Scenario #2: You have lots of Spring clothes that you won’t wear in the Winter that take up unnecessary space. What’s an easy solution for both of these problems? Large containers! Keep a couple of these in your closet or under the bed for easy everyday access.
