12 HALIFAX HOUSE • LIVERPOOL

A PROUD HISTORY Former headquarter of Union Bank for the British Empire It was a proud time in the history of the British Empire, and of the city and port of Liverpool in particular. International trading meant that, for parts the 19th century, the wealth of Liverpool exceeded that of London. In 1851 the city was described as 'the New York of Europe', and its architecture at the time reflected this. Buildings like Halifax House are living, breathing reminders of the status the city enjoyed at the turn of the 20th century, and its proud place at the heart of British commerce. Halifax House was designed on a grand scale by the famous architect G.E. Grayson. It was built around 1870 and later extended. The three-storey stone building was built in the Victorian style with Corinthian elements and is Grade II listed. The impressive facade has a central round-headed
