Osborne Yard is built next to the site of The Royal Osborne Theatre which opened 13th April 1896 with the play “The Priest Hunter’. After 39 years of entertaining audiences with live theatre, it was converted to a picture house, to keep up with the changing technologies of entertainment, and renamed ‘The Osborne’. After a screening of ‘Hell’s Outpost’ in 1958, the building was badly damaged by fire and had to be rebuilt. From 1970 the site re-opened as ‘The New Osborne’ and operated as a live music venue, and even a roller-disco.

THE

BACK STORY

In the late 80’s and early 90’s, Manchester was placed firmly on the map of global music.

AF TER IT ' S C INEMATIC HERITAG E , THE NEW OSBORNE BECAME THE THUNDERDOME , AN IMPORTANT LIVE VENUE HOSTING THE G RE ATEST MANCUNIAN BANDS.

In Manchester, the Hacienda became world renowned as the haven for clubbers, but there needed to be a breeding ground for these bands and artists. Enter The Thunderdome. Taking over The New Osborne moniker, Thunderdome became a live music venue for the originators of the Manchester music scene, regularly graced by the Happy Mondays, 808 State and Joy Division.

TALES FROM

THE CITY 07

Manchester has always stood out for its business scene, but over recent years its popularity has rocketed. The Spinningfields development, located in the heart of the city, essentially introduced a new area to Manchester centre and created top-quality office space. The city is also home to some major UK companies, many of which residing in Salford’s MediaCityUK, such as the BBC and ITV. Manchester, along with Liverpool, was ranked in the top 10 global emerging ecosystems for business start-ups in 2020, ranking ahead of places like Dubai and Lyon.

In recent years 563,000 sq ft of offices have been built, or are under construction in NOMA, just an 8 minute walk from Osborne Yard. This includes Amazon’s first UK headquarters outside of London, with 5,300 jobs created in the last decade, and Manchester’s original employment giant Co-op. With yet even more business opportunities promising to open up in Greater Manchester, increasing office space and delivering around 15,000 jobs, larger amounts of young professionals are being drawn to the city, inevitably driving demand further. Meaning Manchester is quickly becoming one of the foremost property hot spots with affordable rental price. When you look at statistics on Manchester’s population and job market growth, it becomes even more apparent why this Northern gem is the UK’s fastest-growing city and is currently the largest regional economy outside London. The number of people living in Manchester reportedly grew by 149% from 2002 to 2015, while between 1998 and 2015, employment opportunities grew by 84%.

DEVELOPING NORTHERN GATEWAY OVER THE NE X T 20 YE ARS

Manchester City Council and developer partners including CERT property will collectively invest over £1 Billion in developing the northern gateway over the next 20 years. All along the Irk River Valley will be new homes, schools, healthcare, connected public spaces and improved travel links. Together, we’ll make the Northern Gateway a more unified, greener place to call home. The site covers approximately 155 hectares to the north of Manchester city centre between Victoria Station, NOMA and the Northern Quarter in the southwest, and Queens Park and the intermediate Ring Road (Queens Road) to the North-East.
