LEVER HOUSE

Dhillon House takes its name from Southall-born poet and novelist Rupinderpal Singh Dhillon. Before going on to study at Oxford Brookes and De Montfort universities, Dhillon attended Featherstone High School, not far from Southall Waterside.

Lever House takes its name from two brothers who built the world’s first modern multinational corporation. Having established a successful soap production business in England’s North West, Lever brothers William and James went on to acquire The Maypole Dairy Company based in Southall. Occupying a huge area, the site also had its own railway sidings and branch canal.

Famed for his contemporary Punjabi short stories, novels and poetry, Dhillon’s writing connects Western literature with his family’s heritage from the Punjab region of South Asia. From Dhillon House, the importance of physical connections is also evident. Each modern apartment features balcony views out over the central boulevard and on to the expansive reclaimed parkland beyond. Closely linking Dhillon House with other apartment buildings and local amenities at Southall Waterside, here residents can enjoy a network of carfree lanes, public gardens and vibrant community spaces.

The results speak for themselves. Outside, the multi-stock brick-clad buildings benefit from semi-private courtyards – providing safe and secure green spaces that lead seamlessly from the street level and parkland beyond. Dhillon House and Lever House feature secluded gardens, terraces and balconies that not only embrace the outdoors but extend the living space of each apartment.

Atkins lavished particular attention to detail on the internal architecture. As lead architect, Kaare Nielsen, explains “An important aspect of this process was to ensure we designed from the ‘inside-out’. This involved arranging individual rooms to maximise the benefits of the building form.
