Emerging out of a prayer meeting of 12 people in 1937, the First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights was established.
The Church was physically located at 4900 Astor Place, S.E. Reverend Campbell served as Pastor for one year and Reverend Williams served for just a short length of time thereafter. By the grace of God, the call for a Pastor was answered by the late Reverend William Tyler.
Under the pastoral leadership of Dr. Tyler, a Deacon Board, Trustee Board, Church School, Baptist Training Union, and three church-wide committees were created. Thirty-seven auxiliaries and clubs were also organized. Evangelistic work was done in Washington, D.C., Connecticut, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York. The Church enjoyed membership in the Potomac River Baptist Association, District Baptist Convention, and the National Baptist Convention. During Dr. Tyler’s tenure as Pastor, First Baptist built its current edifice in 1964. We thank God for Dr. Tyler’s vision of liquidating the Church’s mortgage in 1975 through “Operation Payoff”. Moreover, seven Ministers were licensed by Dr. Tyler, five of which were called to serve as Pastors. Dr. Tyler served as our Under-Shepherd for 38 years until he was called home to Glory in September 1977.
Under the leadership of former Pastor Dr. Lehman D. Bates, membership increased and the Hour of Power service was restructured. Additionally, he organized a Senior Citizens Group (now called the Silver Threads), Youth Vibration, Almah, Christ Choir, Celestial Choir, Pastor’s Choir; Boys and Girl Scout Troops for children ages 5-17 years were instituted. Dr. Bates licensed 11 men of God to preach the gospel and eight were
installed as Pastors. Dr. Bates originated the Pastors’ Fellowship Guild with neighboring Churches. First Baptist relished membership in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), American Baptist Churches of the South (ABCOTS) and supported the United Negro College Fund. Foreign missions were supported directly and through the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention. The Church enhanced its local evangelistic work by adopting the J.C. Nalle Elementary School, providing backpacks, school supplies, bus transportation for school trips, and winter clothing for needy students. Dr. Bates was installed as Pastor in 1979 and served until 2012.
On February 27, 2015, Reverend Dr. André D. Ivy was selected by vote as the fifth Pastor of First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights. Dr. Ivy’s installation was held on Sunday, September 6, 2015. Dr. Ivy and the Church family are enjoying a great “Pastor and People” relationship. Since Dr. Ivy assumed leadership as Pastor, the attendance for Prayer Meetings and Bible Study has increased significantly. He has organized a Pastor’s Aide Ministry, a Mass Choir, a Silent Praise Ministry and a Praise Team. Moreover, a Church beautification mission has begun under Dr. Ivy’s leadership, with several major projects completed.
The First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights continues to be blessed under Pastor Ivy’s guidance, and the neighborhood has benefitted. Dr. Ivy’s desire is to ensure that “evangelism and discipleship” are never lost, and that others would be “saved and come into the knowledge of Jesus Christ.” With Christ, Pastor Ivy has made a difference in the growth of our Church.
It is a sincere pleasure to offer heartfelt wishes of joy as you celebrate a most blessed occasion, the 80 th Anniversary of First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights. This is indeed a milestone and an event to celebrate!! God has certainly fortified and strengthened this congregation and sanctuary for His use. I have had the pleasure of witnessing First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights flourish and extend its loving arms to residents far and wide.
Under God’s Divine Plan and the anointed leadership of Pastor Ivy, First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights continues to be a cornerstone of the community providing circumspect support not only to its congregation but to the entire community. The vision set many years ago by church founders, desiring to share the news of Jesus Christ, continues to be fruitful to this day. It is only because of this that we have hope and encouragement for the futures of our families and neighborhoods.
Pastor Ivy, thank you for your leadership, lifestyle and love. Thank you to those who dedicate their time selflessly serving the church. As time presses forward, I pray for unimaginable prosperity and growth for the First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights with all Glory to the Lord.
The church will forever be the foundation of the community. As you too keep elected officials in your prayers, be certain that I am praying for you and your families. Continued blessings to all and a very Happy Anniversary to you. Sincerely,
By Authority: Earl J. Howard, TreasurerFirst Baptist Church of Marshall Heights
Reverend Dr. André D, Ivy, Pastor 4934 “B” Street Southeast, Washington, DC 20019
May 4, 2017
Dear Reverend Dr. André D, Ivy:
It is my honor to send a congratulatory wish to you and your entire congregation at The First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights on your remarkable 80th Church Anniversary. An accomplishment of this magnitude is something to be incredibly proud of in itself but your longstanding community support, work and involvement truly made this possible.
I, personally, appreciate your many efforts and initiatives to serve not only your community but thank you for your willingness to open your doors and extend the strong faith and love into my community as well. We are a stronger society because of organizations like yours and your determination to truly continue to Serve Christ with Excellence.
Wishing you continued blessings and success for the future,
25th Legislative District
Reverend Dr. André D. Ivy is a graduate of the Washington DC Public Schools and earned degrees from Lincoln University and the University of Pittsburgh. He developed his faith in Christ at an early age at the Maple Springs Baptist Church in Capitol Heights, Maryland, under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend Dr. Chester McDonald, Sr. He was licensed and ordained into the gospel ministry at the Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Dr. William H. Curtis. During his theological matriculation, he earned a Master of Divinity from the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology, Virginia Union University. After completion of his Master of Divinity, he served as Minister of Life Enrichment at Maple Springs Baptist Church, under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Dr. Larry Jordan. He earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, with a focus on Preaching and Leadership. He is a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He served in various ministry roles with the latest as a Ministerial Assistant at the Friendship Chapel Baptist Church in Wake Forest, North Carolina, under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Dr. Enoch Holloway.
In February 2015, Reverend Dr. André D. Ivy was voted in as the fifth Pastor of First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights. Dr. Ivy was formally installed on Sunday, September 6, 2015. Dr. Ivy and the First Baptist Church family are moving forward to a great Pastor and People relationship.
Since Dr. Ivy has assumed leadership as Pastor, Prayer Meetings and Bible Study attendance has increased. He has organized a Pastor’s Aide Ministry, a Mass Choir, and a Praise Team. Additionally, under the leadership of Pastor Ivy, a church beautification mission has begun with many major projects completed. The opportunity to serve God’s people and focus on “equipping the saints to do the work of ministry,” Ephesians 4:12, is his model for ministry. His passion is to provide spiritual leadership and guidance to support believers, “in living well according to the principles of God.”
Reverend Dr. André D. Ivy is married to the former Ramona R. McWhite and together they have one daughter, Emilie Christine.

“May the blessings of gratitude and service always be upon the First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights”
“Congratulations on your 80th Church Anniversary. To God be all the Glory, Honor, and Praise for the amazing things he has done at the First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights. My prayer is that God will continue to shine His light on such a wonderful and blessed congregation.”
DR. WILLIAM TYLER, our Pastor for 38 years, was born in Marston, N.C. It was there he received his formal education. He was converted and baptized in the First Baptist Church of Marston. He moved to Washington, D.C., whereupon he received further scholastic training. He became a member of New Hope Baptist Church where he was a dedicated and willing worker. He was affiliated with many segments of the Church, including the Church School (of which he was superintendent), the Trustee Board, and the Usher Board. He met Maggie Jennings and they were married in 1927. Shortly thereafter, he was called to the Ministry. In 1935, after proving himself to New Hope, he was licensed and served as an Associate Assistant Pastor. To put the best into his work, Dr. Tyler realized he needed to be educationally equipped to meet the needs of his calling. He studied at the Baptist Seminary, American University, Washington Bible College, Moody Bible Institute, Pioneer Theological Seminary, and Teamer School of Theology.
In 1939, Dr. Tyler began pastoring at First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights; he remained Pastor until God called him home in September of 1977. Under his guidance, a strong Deacon Board, Trustee Board, Church School, Baptist Training Union, three church-wide committees and 37 auxiliaries and clubs were organized.
Evangelistic work was done not only in Washington, D.C., but in Connecticut, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey. Dr. Tyler’s qualifications as a leader were recognized by his colleagues. He held the following positions: The Potomac River Baptist Association’s Chairman of the Board of Mission; Executive Board Member of the District Baptist Convention; and Executive Board Member of the Mt. Bethel Association. Additionally, he was a vocal person with The National Baptist Convention, Inc.
Dr. Tyler’s contribution to First Baptist Church will forever linger in the memory of each of us.
MRS. MAGGIE TYLER, the First Lady of First Baptist for 48 years, was born in Hamlet, N.C., where she received her formal education. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and became an active member of the First Baptist Church in her home town. In 1927, she married William Tyler, who later became a Minister and ultimately Pastor of First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights. During their fifty years of togetherness, they shared the joy of nurturing several children in their home. In the interim, Mrs. Tyler became a member of Springfield Baptist Church, formerly New Hope Baptist. In 1939, she transferred her membership from Springfield Baptist Church to First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights. As her husband was Pastor, she was “FIRST LADY” from the inception. She became a faithful and active member with the Church School, Deaconess Board, Missionary Society, Senior Choir, and South Wing Club.
WE HONOR THE MEMORY OF BOTH THE REVEREND DR. WILLIAM TYLER AND MRS. MAGGIE TYLER
REVEREND DR. WILLIAM AND MAGGIE TYLERReverend Dr. William Tyler
After Dr. Tyler was called from labor to reward on September 16, 1977, Reverend Lehman D. Bates answered the call of First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights on January 7, 1979, and served as Pastor until December 14, 2012.

This was the 1930s When 12 knees Hard pressed, Would bend in reverence To later raise their heads to make history This was the Genesis, 1937, the Lord Great commissioned them, Campbell, Williams, then Tyler
On this Rock, He chose to build His church… District of Columbia, Connecticut, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and New York, Ministries all over, but the Foundation laid and walls erected in 1964; On B Street South East, Washington, D.C. 37 ways to serve 38 years of service
This is the legacy of Dr. William Tyler, The trailblazer, groundbreaker, the history maker Laid to rest in 1977, but his legacy lives on Now doubt worthy of “Well Done”
On this Rock, He chose to build His church A new chapter began Introducing Dr. Lehman D. Bates 11 ministers licensed; eight to preach Ministries multiplied, Spilling over into the streets 1979, made official and in 2012, His leadership was complete
On this Rock, He chose to build His church Foundation, securely laid Ground has been tilled Fix what was broken This land is dying to be healed Young black women need direction Young black men need fathers We have to rebuild The steeple, The beacon, The church, Pastor and People Salvation and knowledge
This is 2017, and there’s so much carnage In the streets and in the pews, But glory to God, for He is doing something new September 6, 2015, Reverend Dr. André D. Ivy Is on the sceneBut eyes have not seen, Ears have not heard, What the Lord will do with A church that’s willing, That’s working That’s planting, That’s sowing. It started with Campbell, Williams and then Tyler Dr. Bates and now Reverend Ivy
On this Rock, He chose to build His church And the gates of hell will never prevail against it, Amen.

If you enter into prayer and make it a serious and unwavering part of your daily life, you will begin to live no longer out of your own human talents and resources. Instead you will begin drawing on the power of God for your everyday life. To God be the Glory!
Surely, he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:4 5

Pastor Ivy and the First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights Family:
It is with great pleasure and humility that we express our appreciation to you for your support as we planned the Church’s 80 th Anniversary Celebration.
The Anniversary Committee was motivated through continued prayer and the Anniversary Theme: Colossians 3:17 – Serving Christ with Excellence. We were also motivated by the Committee’s self -established Mission and Vision “to organize a Celebration magnifying God’s goodness for eighty years of grace on the Hill, A Loving Community”. The Co Chairs thank you for the trust and confidence you placed in us. We hope the outcome was pleasing to God and to the First Baptist Church family.
To our Team Members, thank you for your steadfast cooperation. From the beginning to the end session, the Recorder kept recording. The Celebration venue was magnificent and the program activities were filled with enterta inment and excitement. The news was broadcasted often and all around. Church members, family and friends felt welcomed and nourished by the warm hospitality; and, we were snapped and photographed until the end. As we plotted the journey to the great Cel ebration, we were reminded that God would supply all our needs as our allotted funds were skillfully managed. We are grateful for your respect, honesty, and endless teamwork. This Commemorative Anniversary Book is a keepsake and a reminder of the Anniver sary Theme: Serving Christ with Excellence!
Church Staff, thank you for your guidance and thoughtfulness throughout the process.
To our Pastor, we are appreciative of your strong support. The light in our hearts will forever shine brighter!
