PRESENTS
Excellence in Business Awards Gala 2019 Welcome to the 2019 Excellence in Business Awards Gala! This is an exciting time to do business in Prince George’s County. Our County is the epicenter of regional, business development with over 8 billion dollars of projects in the works. This means, thousands of procurement opportunities for small business and jobs, jobs, jobs! What a great time to have a business in Prince George’s and to be a member of the Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce. Your Chamber is on the forefront, raising the temperature for small business to secure these opportunities. We have an aggressive agenda that includes being your voice in Annapolis, Upper Marlboro, and the Federal Government getting you in front of key businesses & providing you with the latest news on procurement and investment. The Prince George’s Chamber is growing! We have committees focusing on policy and learning opportunities as well as a Board of Directors who are mapping our strategic direction. These initiatives serve as a platform for elevating our significance. Also, in the New Year, the Chamber will be launching a NextGen community focused on economic and strategic opportunity for emerging NextGen entrepreneurs. The Chamber has extended its reach to the Washington region. Last year the Chamber worked with the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the Greater Washington Partnership and the Federal City Council, and lead the Maryland effort to secure sustainable funding for Metro. We continue to work with regional leaders on housing affordability and development. Soon, we will announce a collaboration
with the Small Business Administration (SBDC) that will bring capacity and capital technical assistance to our members. Here in the County, through a County Council resolution, a Procurement Advisory Group has met to provide insight on increasing public procurement to local County businesses. Our economic and other events provide up-to-date information on development projects and our strategic impact conversations help shape the County’s business eco-system. Tonight it’s about you! Your accomplishments, your persistence and your service on enhancing Prince Georges’ quality of life. Our County is grateful for your efforts to fund our schools, keep our communities safe; and, your philanthropy has made Prince George’s the place to live and thrive! Our award recipients are a few examples of those who lift up your work. This event would not be possible without your presence and the generous support from our sponsors, partners & staff. Congratulations to all of the awardees and you, who help Prince George’s ascend to higher heights!
Sincerely,
David C. Harrington, President & CEO Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce

Prince George’s County Police Corporal Channing Reed, Corporal James Carpenter, Corporal Brandon Flax, Lieutenant Manuel Rivera, and Corporal Amir Davarparast
Five Prince George’s County Police Officers are being honored for their roles in helping to locate and arrest a man who allegedly planned to bring great harm to innocent visitors at National Harbor. According to federal court filings, on March 27th, 2019, Rondell Henry, who claimed to be inspired by a terrorist organization, drove a stolen U-Haul van from Virginia to Prince George’s County with the intention of using the van to kill and injure pedestrians on sidewalks within the National Harbor complex. Thanks to the amazing cooperation of multiple local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, authorities were able to quickly act and stop the planned attack. Prince George’s County Police Corporal Channing Reed, Corporal James Carpenter, and Corporal Brandon Flax are all Detectives with the agency’s WAVE unit. The three responded to the Harbor when word hit that the stolen UHaul was possibly located somewhere at or near National Harbor. Using their experience as stolen auto detectives, they located the van on surveillance cameras and captured images of a man getting out of the van. That image was shared with law enforcement on scene. Prince George’s County Police Lieutenant Manuel Rivera who was assigned to the agency’s Harbor unit was on foot patrol early the next morning when he saw Henry on a pier getting out of a boat where he had spent the night. Lt. Rivera moved quickly and took Henry into custody. Prince George’s County Corporal Amir Davarparast of the agency’s Homeland Security Division played a critical role in interviewing Henry. For their dedication to public safety and unwavering commitment to stopping a terror suspect from inflicting unknown injury to countless innocent lives, these five Prince George’s County Police officers are awarded the Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce Public Safety Hero Award.
