Meet Dr. Winslow Health and wellness are a huge priority to me. When you visit my office, you’ll see a number of certificates and diplomas from the various schools and programs I’ve attended over the years. All were wonderful and informative, but there is only one modality that helped me personally heal and progress my own health: hypnosis. That’s why I’m so passionate! In 2012, I was headed back into the workforce after raising three amazing children. However, it wasn’t long before I recognized something wasn’t quite right. After a battery of tests my doctor discovered a benign brain tumor on my balance nerve. The amazing surgeons at Vanderbilt successfully removed the tumor during an extraordinary 10-hour operation. Unfortunately, I suffered many post-op complications with nasty names such as meningitis, diabetes, spinal fluid leakage, hypothyroidism, and Cushing’s Syndrome. After four months of using life-saving steroids, I gained over 100 pounds! I also experienced profound dizziness and vertigo every day. In order to heal, I went back to school. Through hypnosis, I rewired my brain and changed my life. I no longer require a walker to stay balanced. I know hypnosis works, because it works for me 24/7. I believe it can help you, too.

Dr. Skye Winslow is a state and nationally Board Certified Medical Support Hypnotist (CMS-CHt). She is a graduate of the prestigious Hypnotherapy Academy of America. The Science of Hypnosis For some, hypnosis is associated with loss of control or stage tricks. But doctors like David Spiegel of Stanford University School of Medicine know it to be a serious science that taps into the brain’s ability to heal both medical and psychiatric conditions.

“In hypnosis, you’re so absorbed that you’re not worrying about anything else,” Spiegel explained. The Stanford scientists also saw an increase in connections between two other areas of the brain—the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the insula. Spiegel described this as a brainbody connection that helps the brain process and control what’s going on in the body.

The bottom line: hypnosis is not sleep, nor is it a relaxed state. It is, however, a scientifically proven state of mind that has helped many people create real and lasting changes within themselves.

At Penn State, psychology professor William Ray agrees, “We have done a variety of EEG studies, one of which suggests that hypnosis removes the emotional experience of pain while allowing the sensory sensation to remain. Thus, you notice you were touched but not that it hurt.” Today, there are more than 12,000 hypnosis articles published in medical and psychology journals. And, scientists have noticed a decrease in functional connectivity that likely represents a disconnect between someone’s actions and their awareness of their actions. “When you’re really engaged in something, you don’t really think about doing it—you just do it,” Spiegel said. During hypnosis, this kind of disassociation between action and reflection allows the person to engage in activities either suggested by a clinician or self-suggested without devoting mental resources to being self-conscious about the activity. What is HRV?

HRV stands for Heart Rate Variability—it is the variation in the beat-to-beat intervals of your heart. The 1994 Framingham Heart Study identified increased Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as the only common factor that was found in all healthy individuals.

HRV evaluates the balancing act between the sympathetic nervous system (fight and flight) and the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). An imbalance in HRV is the #1 risk factor for sudden cardiac death. While your HRV can offer valuable medical information, we use it to show you how your thoughts and breathing patterns affect your body. It’s one of the most scientifically sound tools to help you visually see what’s going on with you now, and if needed, to show you how to improve your body’s dynamics. Additionally, if you are under the care of a physician who is interested in your HRV charts, we can record the data and with your approval, send the information to your health care provider.

Open Groups

If you are unsure about the type of session to book, we recommend you enroll in Open Group or Private Group sessions to begin your journey. This allows you to learn self-hypnosis techniques at a lower cost while addressing your issue.

Offered on a first-come-first-served basis, Open Groups allow you to address your issue for a very affordable rate. See our website calendar for a list of all Open Group topics being offered. Topics are continually changing, so check the website often! Group topics include: stress reduction, comfortable childbirth, smoking cessation, weight management, performance enhancement, test taking, developing a business savvy mind, chronic pain management, digestive disorders, fertility concerns, and more. You can also suggest a topic!

Group Sessions are perfect for those who wish to work on non-highly charged emotional issues, apprehensions and fears, breaking many types of unwanted habits and creating positive changes. Just put in your ear buds (or use ours) and as soon as you enter hypnosis, you will not be aware of anyone else in the room. Groups Sessions fees can be found on page 22.

Private Groups

Individual Private Sessions

Unique to our practice, private group sessions at Winslow Wellness Centers allow a minimum of three or more family, friends, or coworkers to choose a topic and a time for group hypnosis sessions.

If you feel after three or four Group Classes that your issue persists, or if you want to address more highly-charged and/or deeply emotional issues, or certain fears and apprehensions, then you may want to sign up for a private session to speed your healing.

Perfect for:

Corporate Groups Corporate clients can book our center and offer a differentiated benefit for their employees. The company chooses the date, time, topic, and participants. Topics can include: smoking cessation, weight management, public speaking, managing stress and performance anxiety, improving sales, enhancing productivity, achieving work/ life balance, and more. In private sessions, clients work one-on-one with Dr. Winslow who is able to fully customize your experience. Both group and individual clients can expect to receive homework assignments that may include:

People who do their homework tend to spend the least amount of time in sessions, thereby saving themselves both time and money. Most people find the results they seek in four to six sessions. However, if it is very emotional, it can take up to ten sessions. Of course, our goal is to assist you in the quickest time possible. In fact, we make that our promise to you. Private sessions are 60 to 90 minutes in length. We offer free phone consultations and discounted packages for greater savings. Stress & Apprehension One of the primary causes of health concerns, both physical and mental, is not managing properly with the negative emotions that we experience on a daily basis. Here are some alarming facts about stress and health:

• The American Institute of Stress notes that 75 to 90 percent of visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints. (Rosch 1991). • A Harvard study reveals people who live in a state of high anxiety are four and a half times more likely to suffer sudden cardiac death than non-anxious individuals. (Kawachi et al. 1994). • An international study shows that people who are unable to effectively manage their stress have a 40 percent high death rate than their non-stressed counterparts. (Eysenck 1988). • In 2002, people in the U.S. bought nearly $17.2 billion dollars worth of antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs, and $1.1 BILLION in the same year on just two of three major prescription sleeping pills.

Negative emotions in themselves aren’t bad or wrong. Our emotions can tell us a lot of useful things, although we may not fully understand what our feelings are trying to tell us. But when emotions have nowhere to go, the emotional energy compounds and eventually vents in the form of judgment, projection, or blame.

An accumulation of unresolved negative emotions can manifest in stress, which switches on brain circuits and hormones that prepare our body to protect itself in dangerous situations. We call this the “fight or flight” response. Stress often starts with a physical sensation. First, you feel the tension, irritation, or worry in both your mind and body. In time, it escalates into stronger emotions of frustration, apprehension, or anger, leaving you mentally and physically overloaded and exhausted. But you can learn to manage your feelings and emotions. You may have been living under the misguided belief that showing emotion is akin to showing weakness, but showing one’s feelings in an appropriate way is a very human and thoughtful thing to do. Trying to live with apprehension, fear, and turmoil creates disharmony in your body and, in time, hurts you in many ways. In fact, we can literally show you how it’s affecting your body, and your health!

It doesn’t help that society discourages us from acknowledging our feelings and emotions. To many, it’s just better to squish them down and hide them, which sometimes results in harsh expressions of unkindness to ourselves or others. Fears Fears often develop during childhood and can become aggravated during adulthood. People often carry their fears around for decades, unaware of the fact that most can easily be eliminated via hypnosis.

Symptoms

When you have a fear, you feel as though you have no control over your feelings in spite of knowing on a conscious level that your fear may be, in fact, somewhat irrational. The most common indication of this type of fear is a feeling of terror when exposed to the situation or thing which triggers the fear. Symptoms can include: accelerated heart beat, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, hot/cold flashes, numbness or tingling sensation, trembling, choking, fear of fainting, or losing control of oneself. Some people may even experience a panic attack.

Some people experience a different type of fear. It can be generated as an emotional response to a real or perceived threat and can cause a behavior change, such as running, hiding, or freezing. Fear can be learned by experiencing or watching a frightening event. A short list of these types of fears are:

There are generally four types of these very common fears: • Natural environment: fear of heights, storms, water, darkness, etc. • Animals: fear of snakes, cockroaches, spiders, frogs, dogs, cats, etc. • Blood-injection-injury: fear of injections, blood, vomit, etc. • Situational: fear of flying, dentists, driving, tunnels, bridges, and social situations such as speaking in public, dating, and so on.

Smoking Cessation It’s a curious thing that no matter how much a smoker consciously knows that smoking will likely shorten their life and increase their chance of incurring a whole host of smoking related disorders, they still feel powerless to stop. It doesn’t matter if they know and even agree that smoking may eventually cause them harm, they still can’t seem to find the “willpower” to quit. Of course, willpower alone can work, but the danger is that sooner or later the part of you that wants to smoke snaps back and rebels against the part of you that is trying not to. The force of habit is so strong for most smokers that they feel overwhelmed by the compulsive drive to reach for another cigarette, no matter their good intentions.

THE REASON FOR THIS IS PATTERN MATCHING. When you experience anything, your brain tries to make sense of the new stimulus by matching it to something similar from your past to give you the right emotional or behavioral response.

OVER TIME, WHEN NEW PATTERNS ARE ESTABLISHED THE BEHAVIOR BECOMES PART OF OUR ROUTINE… ALSO KNOWN AS A HABIT. THIS IS THE WAY HUMANS ARE PROGRAMMED TO LEARN.

So if, for example, we see a door, we know we can operate it without having to relearn how it works. But pattern matching can go wrong. An example of a faulty pattern match is an addiction. Because of the way our brain learns, one pattern can be mismatched to any other pattern even though there’s no logical connection. Like smoking a cigarette after eating a meal, or smoking when you become sad, lonely, or even irritated. Our smoking cessation program works to help you break pattern matching by working with your subconscious mind. We help you retrain your brain to feel as though you are discarding the habit just as you would an old coat that’s worn out. Smoking will be seen as irrelevant and unfamiliar, even alien, and eventually stopping becomes inevitable.

Dial Down Pain Chronic pain is non-cancer pain that persists beyond normal healing time or for longer than three months. Unrelieved chronic pain can cause considerable suffering, physical limitations, and emotional distress.

Chronic pain results when pain is imprinted into the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), causing you to experience pain long past the healing of your original injury. Physicians face enormous challenges in their attempt to treat patients experiencing chronic pain because while it is very real, its intensity and complexity is unique to each individual. In addition, how one reacts to painful stimuli varies on the basis of age, gender, ethnicity, prior experiences with pain, and a host of other psychosocial factors that many medical doctors are not typically trained to manage. Cancer Support Hypnosis is used at several levels of cancer care. Fertility Research has shown fertility can be affected by mind–body therapies such as hypnosis. Dr. Ernest Rossi specializes in psychobiology, the relationship between mind and physical body states. He has done extensive research that suggests human genes must be in a state of readiness for conception to take place, and that hypnotic-type suggestions can activate specific genes.

Lowers Stress to Make Conception Possible

In one study, Dr. Peter Quinn, a pioneer in the field, used hypnosis with a group of women between the ages of 26 and 42 who had durations of infertility lasting from 2-12 years. 65% of the women went on to have a successful full-term pregnancy. The positive results from these studies suggest that the sub-conscious mind may be an overlooked factor in the treatment of fertility. Hypnosis for fertility doubles the success of IVF treatment. Researchers in Soroka University in Israel found that 28% of women in a group that were hypnotized became pregnant, compared to 14% of those who were not hypnotized. Women using mind/body techniques such as hypnosis have a 42%–55% conception rate compared to the 20% with in vitro fertilization.

The neurochemical barrage that is associated with the “fight or flight” response in all human bodies, and which can be triggered by a threat to self-esteem or dignity, translates in the body as contraction of the muscles, an acceleration of the cardiovascular system, and the release of “emergency” hormones throughout the body. The body is on alarm, energy is directed toward the areas needed for actual “fight” or “flight” such as the arms and legs, and away from areas the brain considers less important. Unfortunately, the reproductive system is the most expendable. Digestive Disorders Bowel disorders affects 10 to 20 percent of adults at some point in their lives. Once called “spastic colon,” it’s actually a combination of symptoms that may include constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, fatigue, and headaches that can be worsened by certain foods, stress, and irritants. Pricing

Prerequisite Class Offered at a reduced price of $25, these fun and informative 60-minute classes will help you to gain a better understanding of the science behind hypnosis. During class we’ll test your ability to enter hypnosis, determine your body’s favorite learning method, visually show you how your thoughts affect your body, and answer your questions. If you choose to sign up for any package plan, this fee will be applied to the cost of your program. Your choices are: • Hypnosis 101: Great for those who are not working through any pain issues. • Hypnosis for Pain Management: Shows you how your body perceives pain and the various ways hypnosis can help you “dial down” the pain so you can be comfortable.

Group Class Fees Groups are designed for multiple sessions and offer a big financial savings. If you choose to pay weekly, the fee is just $69 per session. If you pay the full fee in advance, each session drops to $59. You can determine the cost by multiplying the fee by the number of recommended sessions found on the website calendar description. Our fee includes a free audio recording of the session, which is shared with you via DropBox. IMPORTANT: Since you are booking the chair for a specific time and date at a lower price, you will not receive a refund should you miss a session or arrive late. If the class is scheduled to begin at 9AM – the doors will close and lock at 9AM. There is no grace period, so an “on time arrival” is 10 minutes early. Group sessions are sequential, so be sure to check your calendar to ensure you can attend all the sessions before you pay. This policy is firm.

Private Session Fees

Appointment Cancellation Policy

Clients managing emotional trauma, fears, and private concerns who may not want to discuss in a group environment are best treated in private sessions where the hypnotist can work one-onone with you for 60 to 90 minutes. We offer package discounts since it takes most people four to six sessions to accomplish their goal. However, for some, it can take as many as ten sessions. If you choose to buy a four session package and pay weekly, the fee is $150 per session. If you choose to pay in advance (4 session minimum) the fee drops to $135 per session. If additional sessions are required, your discounted fee is extended. The single session fee is $200. If you buy a package plan but withdraw early, we will prorate the refund based on our single session fee.

Winslow Wellness Centers is committed to providing all of our clients with exceptional care. When a client cancels without giving enough notice, they prevent another client from being seen.

While we do not require Private Session clients attend the Prerequisite Class, we strongly suggest that you do in order learn about hypnosis and self-hypnosis techniques. If after attending the prerequisite you choose to purchase any package plan, we will apply the $25 fee to your purchase. If you choose to forgo the prerequisite class, Dr. Winslow offers free phone consultations and will be able to give you an idea if she feels she will be able to help you and if so, how many sessions may be required. Often these folks develop a keen sensitivity to scents so we try to keep them comfortable by providing a very low scent environment. Manners and Boundaries Please be gracious, tolerant, and supportive of yourself and your classmates. You are personally responsible for maintaining your own boundaries and are required to respect the boundaries of others.

Cell Phones and Recording Devices

Guests & Care Givers

No computer, iPad, recording equipment, or any electronic device may be used during sessions. Cell phones should be turned off and stored.

Private session clients over the age of 18 can choose to allow a guest to remain in the therapy room. No caregivers or guests may attend Group Sessions without prior approval.

Ear Buds Suggested

Children

Quite often people in hypnosis will snore, giving the appearance they are asleep. This is due to the soft palate at the back of the throat relaxing. To keep this potential distraction to a minimum Winslow Wellness has invested in top-flight audio equipment that is wired into each recliner. For your comfort, we strongly suggest that you bring you own ear buds. If you forget your ear buds, you may purchase a pair for $1.

Our office serves ages eight and up. If the client is under the age of 18, a parent must be present during the session unless they have signed a release form for their child who is over the age of 14. Winslow Wellness reserves the right to videotape sessions when a parent is not present. This is for the protection of the child and the hypnotist.

Office Computers

Our office is paperless. All intake forms must be completed online prior to attending your first session. If you are under the care of a physician, we will need to fax a form to your doctor prior to working with you. Please call our office so we can start the process early. Every recliner is outfitted with a computer. These computers are available to all of our clients, so do not input personal identifiable data. We suggest you create a separate account and non-identifiable login when utilizing the HRV equipment. The computers are wiped clean between each session and all information is deleted at the end of each day.

Room Temperature Many people find that their body temperature lowers when they are in hypnosis. We suggest you layer your clothing so you will be comfortable. In addition, we offer clean blankets and pillows for your convenience. If you have a fragrance allergy, or prefer to bring your own pillow and blanket, we invite you to do so.
