MAterial Testing
Experimenting with melting the bases of plastic bottles to create a fluid, flower type structure.
Attaching bottle caps with cable ties to create a dome of green
Folded paper to create an origami, geometric shape
Creating triangles out of straws to create an industrial geometric structure

Cable Ties looped together giving an airy delicacy to plastic
Upcycled Light
Story Board
Cut down A3 paper to a square
Fold diagonally in half both ways
Fold straight in half both ways
From folded edge, fold up triangles on both sides
Contort paper to create this shape and trim off excess
Fold up straight edges to create a square
Unfold and do the same on the pointed edges
Fold back in half and allow the paper to crease into the traingles
Repeat around the whole piece to create this structure
Using the origami as the mould for a more sturdy structure, it is covered in cling film to prevent the new paper overlay from sticking. Fax paper, a now obsolete material is then paper mache over the mould and left to dry.

Design Sketch Lid with a silicon seal has an odor filter fitted into the top to prevent bad smells
Soft close hinge means that the bin is never accidently left open, meaning less smells but also allowing it to store the heat needed for compost to be made
Birch Ply body with PET lining to prevent the oak from rotting in the moisture. Oak gives a positive aesthetic appeal meaning it becomes an appealing object to have in the kitchen
Holes in the base of the plant pot allow for the moisture to escape if it becomes too saturated
Large handle means that users with limited dexterity can easily open the bin, however the sharp point of the triangle would have to be lessened to eliminate risk of injury
Lift barricade with handle to reseal compost into the plant section
Acrylic panels to view the progress of your compost heap
Tray to collect the moisture the compost produces. Also means it can be more easily transported around the kitchen

Clear indicators of which waste is appropriate means less able or aware users can still understand
Composting Requirements from Research
Secondary Research
Up of is be
Breaking the waste into smaller segments means they can come in contact with oxygen more efficiently and therefore increases the composting process
To prevent a bad smell originating from the bin, its must have a lid, and this lid must have an odor filter
to 80% waste that thrown away could recycled
1 litre of oil can contaminate up to 1 million litres of drinking water
A foot pedal would enable users with poor dexterity or full hands to easily access the bin
A heater would speed up the composting process
UK Recycling stats
The UK throws away ÂŁ13 Billion of food each year that could have been eaten
Through observation I learnt that there isn’t a suitable method of disposing of food waste that is fun and inclusive for the whole family. I therefore concluded that a unit which encourages food disposal through to the creation of compost to grow your own kitchen garden would be appealing and would fit in with the current market.
15 million plastic bottles a day are used and thrown away in the UK after a single use The UK throws away 20 million slices of bread each day Glass that is thrown into landfill will never decompose
