Skylar Brown I am a graduate student at Kansas State University, earning a my Masters of Landscape Architecture. My design philosophy focuses on placemaking in the urban environment. As a professional, I value completing work in a timely manner and will always strive to push the design. Getting projects done early does not mean hindering the design but being prepared for the unexpected. I am a focused individual that will do what is needed for the project. When an issue is presented I will face it head on. I strive to become a team leader during projects. I have leadership experience from being an Eagle Scout, and have been taking leadership roles in other programs and projects. I want the team to succeed and see the best way for this to happen is by listening and understanding my team members. All comments and ideas are welcomed because they can only benefit the design. I am not afraid of staying late and taking on more responsibility to insure the success of the project.

Master’s Research Questions • How can Douglas Avenue in Wichita, Kansas be redesigned to tell the historical importance of the Civil Rights Movement in Wichita? • How can the Douglas Avenue Streetscape and Chester I. Lewis Park be redesigned to better incorporate the homeless population in the area and create a space where everyone is included?

Project Overview Before becoming a Pop-Up Park in Wichita, Kansas the site was a fifteen foot hole that was left after the demolition of a building and a halt in plans for construction. The Pop-Up Park is intended to attract residents and workers by providing amenities that are not currently available in the area. This was a project designed by graduate and undergraduate students. As an undergraduate student we were tasked with designing and constructing a site furnishing element. Their were four teams consisting of three team members and out of the four projects two were chosen to be constructed.

The Idea The goal of the bench was to spark people’s attention and draw them into the site. When we discovered the hackberry log in the shop we saw it as a piece of artwork and wanted to develop our design around it. The bench was designed to appear to be floating and this is accomplished by using the planter as a counterweight, so users can sit wherever they desire.

Participation As a team we designed the bench and the planter. With construction, I decided on fasteners, designed and welded the structure, some sanding of the wood, and did a majority of the grinding for the steel. Construction was not finished during the school year, so I spent time after the semester to finish the project for the team and the WDDC. 1

Internship Experience Kimley-Horn & Associates I interned with Kimley-Horn from January to August in 2017. Working in the Fort Worth office, my knowledge of landscape architecture grew while working under John Fielder, Katherine Utecht, and Katelyn Grass. I worked on a multitude of projects. Typical work included researching code, planting design, site design, irrigation design, and Photoshop rendering. Gainseville Farmers Market: This project was a joint effort between myself, John Fielder, Katherine Utecht, and Katelyn Grass. We performed a design charrette together and combined many of our ideas for the final product. During this project I was responsible for producing the perspective renderings and also participated in the rendering for the site plan view. My process consisted of using site photographs, SketchUp, and Photoshop to create the final product. Another responsibility was the OPCCs. (SketchUp 2017, and Photoshop CC 2017)

Mediation Center Project Overview This project focuses on a mediation center that was designed in conjunction with an architecture student and myself. A mediation center is used for bringing people together or an individual to a setting where they are capable of talking about their issues with a professional and gathering insight on how best to handle the situation they are currently in.

15

Our goal was to develop the landscape and architecture to enhance the experience on the site. We designed various areas to function as private spaces for conversation but also for convenience for individuals if the mediation process gets to heated. The site also utilizes art to de-stress and calm individuals, while also working as a conversation starter.

Breakroom Perspective: The intended experience within the exterior break area for employees, offers a chance for employees to be in a private exterior space that offers opportunities to destress from the high stress situations that occur during mediation. (SketchUp 2015 and Photoshop CC 2015) Site Plan and Section: Illustrates the intended design and digital rendering skills. (Civil 3d and Photoshop CC 2015)

Critical Mapping and GIS Critical Mapping

GIS

During my work in Omaha, I was tasked with mapping the area, discovering current dilemmas, and providing solutions to those problems. In this process I learned how to better understand and find issues within a community, and also learned about Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design.

Throughout my college experience, in my classes, I have been working with GIS and learning how to better use the software for our profession. I have done a variety of mapping within GIS over the years.

Pedestrian way along Q street: The sidewalks south of Q street are newer but small, and the sidewalks to the north of Q street are much older and decrepid. Both sidewalks are interrupted by fire hydrants, light poles, and service lone poles. There is also a lack of crosswalks for the residents in Southside Terrace and the surrounding neighborhood. The sidewalks also have very few trees along it which makes the conditions to walk to the grocery store and other services exposed and uncomfortable.

Southside Terrace Project Overview

Q Street

Southside Terrace is a public housing location in Omaha, Nebraska, that is replete with issues involving topographical change, lack of natural surveillance, uninspired housing structures, a lack of on-site social and recreational amenities, and a weak connection to Q Street, a major arterial street. This project was done in the course of four weeks with three team members including myself as project manager. Our overall goal was to promote greater social interaction among Southside Terrace residents and the surround neighborhood. Convergence uses two major strategies: a mixed-use “Main Street extending the community to Q Street and a mix of housing types matched to a variety of income levels.

Contribution Within the project I was in charge of delegating tasks, redesigning the road networks, designing a Promenade along 29th street, and designing a small park that promotes sustainability and educates the residents about the natural surroundings of Omaha. Also within this project I was in charge of producing the presentation slides, poster, and a portion of the studio book.
