What is a rave?

resources

(from the verb: to rave) A rave is a large dance party that takes place at a variety of different venues! They often feature loud electronic dance tracks. Raves are commonly associated with drug use. Throughout history, raves have had a complicated relationship with the law. The first raves started in 'underground' non-authorized venues and while there are still many underground raves, many authorized venues host raves these days.

SAFER PARTYING & RAVING

Party CheckList Make sure you bring some extra cash with you in case you need it. Bring harm reduction supplies. While some parties may provide them, it's always better to be safe than sorry! Gum/lip balm, this is especially relevant when taking drugs that cause lip biting! Ear plugs because it can get really loud. Condoms and lube! Water/something to keep you hydrated throughout the night. Weather appropriate clothing, and comfortable footwear. Use the buddy system before, during and after the party. You're always safer when you're with a friend.

Before the party Eat before you go! Make sure your phone is charged. Plan your rides! It can be helpful not only to plan your route to the venue but also how you're planning on getting home. Bring a friend! If you’re planning on doing drugs, check in with them to let them know what you're planning to take and how much. It can be useful to do some research on the drugs you want to take. Mixing more than one substance can be very dangerous and may lead to overdose.

During the party Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! Identify fire exits. It's good to know where to go in case of an emergency. Certain drugs might make you feel like you have all the energy in the world, but it's important to take breaks even if you don't feel like it! During the night if you're using drugs remember to wait before redosing as it takes a little while to feel the effects!

After The Party If you aren't sober STAY OFF THE ROADS. Uber, take a cab, ride with a designated friend, or use the TTC! If you're coming down after the party, be cautious about 'sleeping it off'. Not all overdoses happen instantly. Use your judgment and if you're concerned, call 911. Showers are amazing, and they feel pretty good after a long night. As always, hydration is key! Fruit juices can be great. Smoothies are also a really good option, especially if you're feeling nauseous and unable to eat (add bananas if you can!) . Check on your friends when you get home and the next day to make sure they're safe/okay.
