welcome to issue two! we’re bigger, better & stronger!

Congrats to Cristiane Ross for answering the competition to win Issue One’s Interview of the Month’s gift! Yes the Counterf!t logo appears 8 times in Arne Venema’s interview!

Dear Hong Kong, We’ve known each other since I was born and sure we’ve had our ups and downs - but even when I vowed never to see you again - after 10 years I came back. I left because I knew if I stayed I would have eventually disappointed you (more so that I feared to stay and disappoint you) and probably end up doing wrong by you. And there were so many wrongs to choose from! From the very moment I started high school you started to tell me what I could not do, what I musn’t do and what I must say no to. Then I got reminded by Dad & Mum, the TV, the bus stop, the teachers at school - it was everywhere and the only thing the adults were bothered to tell me. What about what I can do, should do, could do and stuff I can say yes to? I’m an adult now and I don’t want to repeat the same messages I’ve heard growing up and the same messages are being repeated now! I want to answer the questions I was asking so many years ago and I know the answers will make a lot of mini-me’s feel a lot better! I’ve been told that time heals all wounds but wasting time harms all life too. So since it’s going to take a long time for you to hear me - I decided to go ahead and prove it you! Welcome to Issue Two! It’s been a tough fight to get here and I got hurt and disappointed along the way but knowing that I am answering all those questions I’ve even asked myself reassures me that everything is going to work out in the end - you just can’t give up! Make it happen! It all starts with you believing you can!

Design and play can result in some seriously cool creations - it really depends on how well you’ve exercised your creative muscles. You may find that your end result was far simpler than the one you first envisioned - and thats what all the time, research and concept development is all about! Check these pair of pants out from graphic designer & illustrator Jona Lam (http://chungdha.com) + the pants go live on exhibition at Prologue workshop from October 14th onwards!

We think art should have no rules, no boundaries and no borders. This month we’re not alone in this view! No Borders Contemporary Art gallery opens its doors to the public with their opening group show on the 16th October showcasing Steve Smith, Sunil Pawar (UK), Dorothy Tang, Jonathan Jay Lee (HK), James Marshall (USA), Luca Demichelis (ITA) & Tanya Tishuru (RUS) - a true group effort and artistry without borders!

The man drawing a line at where the borders shall not be is Christian Keith. Check out their use of space, art and ambiance at 39 Aberdeen Street, Central, Hong Kong. Email info@nobordersart.com for more info and visit http://nobordersart.com.

Wondering why we are all tickled pink this month? October is the month of breast cancer awareness. Breast cancer is increasing amongst women in Asia over the years so we’ve decided to dedicate this issue to bringing awareness to breast cancer. Here’s a bit of basic information you need to know: The breasts sit on the chest muscles that cover the ribs. Each breast is made of 15 to 20 lobes. Lobes contain many smaller lobules. Lobules contain groups of tiny glands that can produce milk. Milk flows from the lobules through thin tubes called ducts to the nipple. The nipple is in the center of a dark area of skin called the areola. Fat fills the spaces between the lobules and ducts. The breasts also contain lymph vessels. These vessels lead to small, round organs called lymph nodes. Groups of lymph nodes are near the breast in the axilla (underarm), above the collarbone, in the chest behind the breastbone, and in many other parts of the body. The lymph nodes trap bacteria, cancer cells, or other harmful substances. Cancer begins in cells, the building blocks that make up tissues. Tissues make up the organs of the body. Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes, this orderly process goes wrong. New cells form when the body does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor. Tumors can be benign or malignant: Benign tumors are not cancer: * Benign tumors are rarely life-threatening. * Generally, benign tumors can be removed. They usually do not grow back. * Cells from benign tumors do not invade the tissues around them. * Cells from benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumors are cancer: * Malignant tumors are generally more serious than benign tumors. They may be life-threatening. * Malignant tumors often can be removed. But sometimes they grow back. * Cells from malignant tumors can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. * Cells from malignant tumors can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. When breast cancer cells spread, the cancer cells are often found in lymph nodes near the breast. Also, breast cancer can spread to almost any other part of the body. The most common are the bones, liver, lungs, and brain. The new tumor has the same kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the primary tumor. For example, if breast cancer spreads to the bones, the cancer cells in the bones are actually breast cancer cells. The disease is metastatic breast cancer, not bone cancer. For that reason, it is treated as breast cancer, not bone cancer. Doctors call the new tumor "distant" or metastatic disease.

understanding felines & canines

They say alls fair in love & war and would likely agree the same for cats and dogs. Why is that? Is there real truth to the term “fight like cats and dogs”? Enquiring minds want to know! To date we do know that their relationship has inspired many a films to be made and cartoons to be created in depicting their animosity against each other but we don’t actually know if this is all hype manifested from a small disagreement cats & dogs had over centuries ago!

We think and exercise this mantra in our heads daily – if there is a will there’s a way! And with our furry companions we reckon that if the two shall meet – they should do so unforced and by no means in a competitive environment. Having to choose between the better pet a cat or a dog can be and make is really about personal preference (or in some cases allergic reactions!) and there’s no reason why both can’t get along in harmony (for a more detailed guide and aid in this area check out this website: http://www.cuhumane.org/topics/catdog.html or get in contact with STOP (Save Hong Kong’s Cats & Dogs) by emailing them at stopsavehkcatsdogs@gmail.com. It’s nothing you haven’t heard before - water is and always will be an essential necessity to life. This applies to all forms of living creatures however for us human beings - our bodies alone is made up of 55% - 78% water depending on our body sizes! So to ensure that we’re properly hydrated we should be consuming 1 - 7 liters of water a day. 7 liters is a huge amount however if you’re active and a sports fanatic rehydrating your body after an energetic workout ensures you replenish your body with fluids to maintain a natural balance. Made up of hydrogen and oxygen – despite its transparent appearance and tasteless flavour its available in different varieties and forms. Bottled water is one of the largest beverages consumed in our hot city and with so many choices, how do we know which water we want? What’s the difference? Spring water - is defined as bottled water derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the surface of the earth. To qualify as spring water, it must be collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground formation feeding the spring. Mineral water - is defined by its constant level and relative proportions of mineral and trace elements at the point of emergence from the source. No minerals can be added to the water. It contains not less than 250 parts per million total dissolved solids. Purified water - bacteria and dissolved solids have been removed from the water by some process, making it "purified." Ocean Spring water is obtained from the deepest depths of water containing minerals that distlilled and purified waters are unable to. Vital minerals and pure essence makes Ocean Spring water stand in a league of their own and we here at SKY are proud to announce them our official sponsors!
