Are you facing stress as a student in your studies today? Due to the university’s rapid development, global competition, technology and changes in the nature of the education, the academic environment is no longer providing the low-stress academic environment that students once enjoyed. Thus, this project will explore the potential building programs which will reduce the student stress in the campus. How is it going to be? As an architectural solution, it will prioritize on the mingling of the student community to encourage communal interaction among each other. In order to reduce student stress, the building programs play a crucial role of acting as one of the coping stress strategies. This is the point where the project investigation comes in. It will explore the generation of building programs which consist of the elements fun, relaxing, healthy and knowledge exposure. It will also investigate on the compatibility of building programs in spatial organization of a student hub center. UTM Student Hub Technology Center is a place of experience, innovation, creativity, and engagement with ideas – a place where physical and digital media come together – a place where you can find new things out, learn new skills or simply relax and enjoy the atmosphere. It is the students’ “living room”, next to the heart of the campus.

Stress is something familiar that students often face in their daily lives today. Generally, high level of accumulation of stress will lead into work unsatisfactory, work absentee, and even physical and mental illness. Yet, the institution has neglected the importance of addressing this issue whereby it is blindly taken as an advantage to push the students limit till the extent. This point is what will be subsequently taken into account by generating effective building programs to fulfill the chosen theme of this project – “The Living Room of The Campus”.

STUDENT SQUARE
DESIGN CONCEPT
A design philosophy is implemented whereby the primary space is one for socialization and communal interaction. The design concept is originally inspired by the thick bushes of trees around the site. Thus, “tree” is being applied as a design metaphor to initiate the following stages of design. It is similar to how a tall tree supports a miniature ecosystem below its large canopy.
We shall find the livelihood of animal populations such as squirrels, birds, bess or worms under one big community. In the other words, this building will act as a “living room” for the students where they can seek for relaxation and knowledge. It is a place of innovation, creativity, experience and engagement of ideas. A place where they can learn new skills, seek for new things out or simply sit back and relax. The design will prioritise the mingling of community, as a way to promote communal interaction and reduce student stress.

DESIGN IDEA
Form making idea is refered to the primary parts of the tree which consists of canopy, trunk and roots. They are transformed indirectly into building roof, building core and building massing respectively. Wheareas for the space organization, the idea is to mimic the tree water transportation system.
As it can be seen from the illustrated diagram above, the water is absorbed from every direction and stored at the central storage of the tree below its trunk. Then, it will be transported vertically up through the xylem vessels and spread out to every single leaves on the tree. It is similar in such a way for the building space organization. The spaces branch out like the roots of the tree, surrounding a central core space. And this central core space will act as the minggling spot of the community.

Main road is not used to create an access lane to the site to avoid traffic jam. The access lane is connected from a secondary road which is next to the site.
Service bay is planned to be located at the border of the site which is far from the main road. It allows the trees to filter the view from there.
Basement parking is proposed to avoid negative view of the natural topography of the site.
The building is segregated into smaller blocks to promote cross natural ventilation.
Fragmentation of the building into smaller blocks also creates more pocket spaces for more trees to grow.
Footbridge is proposed to invite the pedestrian from the opposite of the lake.
Outdoor public gathering space is proposed to attract people to the site in order to promote an active user spot.
Maximising the roof canopy to reduce the heat radiation.

Site Area : 1 acre (4046.86 sqm) Location : Bamboo Village, Sahom Valley Agro & Eco Resort, Kampar, Perak, Malaysia.
This project explores on useroriented design. Although the common perception nowadays is that all design should cater for the disabled as a specialneeds group, it often creates unnecessary segregation and separation to them. Earlier on it wasn’t much of an issue, but gradually the society is more sensitive towards this segregation that eventually warrants a new way to look at designing for the disabled. Universal Design involves designing products and spaces so that they can be used by the widest range of people possible (universaldesign.com). It is a process that addresses the needs of people with disabilities, while at the same time recognize that the need to design a solution that caters for the widest range of human abilities and disabilities. It introduces design that is ergonomically universal that people of all ages, disabilities and/or illness could use without having to create one specifically for their need. This proposed site is located at Sahom Valley in Malaysia which is a resort situated near Gua Tempurong, Gopeng, Perak. It adopts the concept of agricultural and ecological-oriented tourism, offering a wide variety of experiences. And besides, this public building is proposed as a bamboo learning center that serves as a multi-functional public building based on the needs on the site. This building is aimed to be the focus point for the tourism attraction of Bamboo Village in Sahom Valley.

SITE ISSUES A local tourism spot should have “must see” or “must do” attractions. It is to create a lively atmosphere around the area and leave a footprint in people’s mind. However, only accommodation is provided in the Bamboo Village for the time being. Besides, neither day nor night activities are prepared for the tourists to spend their time in this village. Thus, the atmosphere is very dull and people gets boring when they stay for days in this village.

Whenever there are activities happening in a place, people will be attracted. And whenever people are carrying out activities, their pulses are beating and movements are created. An axis is set to be the initiator of a movement when people travel from one place to other. In between the fragments of planes within a motion and the rate of beating pulse, rhythm lies there. Hence, these interpretations are set to be the kernel idea of building form, spaces and façade design.
• RHYTHMIC PATTERN Creating a hierarchy directional axis towards the neighbourhood spaces (including future developement) to highlight the inter-relationship which existed in between • VISTAS An imaginary line whereby the forces resonate and throb through the design. Defined by two specific terminal points such as neighbourhood spaces and future planning which generates a very specific movement. Movement through space becomes linear; time becomes solely chronological. • MOVEMENT Architectural elements that is designed in a way that they reappear in a consecutive manner along a sequence of different spaces which suggests a kind of architectural motion.

BA MB O O V I L L A G E M A STE R PL AN During our visit to Sahom Valley, Ar.Shariff, the owner of the land said that there will be extra 20 bamboo chalets coming to this Bamboo Village soon. Thus, this has been taken into account during the design process. The new bamboo chalets are aligned in a curvilinear manner which connects the pedestrian path to the building. It forms a smooth directional flow which could lead the visitors towards the focus point of the village. An obeservation deck is projected outwards from the center of the building to the river. It allows the visitors to have a different experience on appreciating the panoramic view of the natural surrounding while standing above the crystal-like water.

Bamboo plantation is included in the planning as well. It is planned to be situated at the opposite side of the building. A footbridge is designed to connect the path from the building itself to the other side, forming a continuous linkage of the circulation flow. This plantation is aimed to produce the supply of bamboos for the construction material of this building and for the future purposes. Besides, it creates a platform for the visitors to get in touch with different types of bamboo, providing the knowledge of bamboo to the public. There will be several bamboo pavilions surrounding the core of the bamboo plantation. They will act as part of the landscape design, contributing to the scenic view of green space.

The brief calls for the design of Green Design Practice (Architect’s & Partners) office in Johor Bahru city centre. An architect & partners office with green architecture/ design approach. Green architecture is define as philosophy of architecture that advocates sustainable energy sources, the conservation of energy, the reuse and safety of building materials, and the siting of a building with consideration of its impact on the environment/ The architect & partners office will become a show case building or a ‘living building’ to response to green building design in the tropical region. As such it offers a wide range of services which includes green architectural design, interior design, urban design, model making and environmental engineering (Green Building Ratings & Certification, Building Energy Analysis & Simulation, Carbon Footprint Analysis and Environmental & Sustainability Trainings among others). In order to promote a better working efficiency in a crowded city center, this building emphasizes on providing clean fresh air to the work spaces. Besides, this building also acts as a “sponge”. It absorbs the polluted air and provide a better air quality to the public. It will be the first green lung of the Johor Bahru city center in the future.

MAKING THE BUILDING SKIN AS THE LIVING SYSTEM
The building skin features louvers with vegetation. Recycled plastic planter box is implemented in the design to increase environmental awareness and to act as supporting sun shading devices at the same time. This green louvers surround the entire building creating a GREEN ENVELOPE which makes the building literally BREATHES. Alowing the building to generate fresh oxygen within the building spaces itself and emit GREEN ENERGY to the public. It will act as the urban’s oxygen generator which could produce limitless oxygen naturally.

Space Constantly encompasses our being. Through the volume of space, we move, see forms, hear sounds, feel breeze, smell the fragrances of a flower garden in bloom. It is a material substance like wood or stone. Yet it is a inherently formless vapor. Its visual form, its dimensions and scale, the quality of its height - all of these qualities depends on our perception of the spatial boundaries defined by elements of form. As space begins to be captured, endosed, molded, and organized by elements of mass, architecture comes into being. This 1st year, 1st semester, 1st project is about a form of an abstract design. First, we were given drawing of acting human figures ( musicians, dances, martial, etc.) Then, we were needed to visualize and interpret the spaces between the character/ acting human figures and translate them into an abstract design element. The final design should be seen as a composition of planes comprising of design parts rather than as a sculpture or singular form. Hence, my subject for this project is “Tarian Zapin”, one of the traditional Malay dances in Malaysia.

The Living Rhythms
Like project 1, this project is also about a three dimensional abstract space design. Students in each workbase were given a painting that has been divided into 6 smaller segments. Then’ they are required to form a small group of six and select any segments of the painting to further for the next stage of design. By seeing the segmented painting as a 2-D contextual space, students will be given the opportunity to unfold it into a 3-D space. How well they perceive the spaces within the painting and unfold it will depend much on their creative imagination. By using plane elements, the 3-D space design must be expressively displayed with appropriate consideration of connection, boundaries and flow of movement to nearby space (segments belong to his /her friends). In other words, the design must show the spatial continuity as well as the contextual design value. For my workbase, we were given a “bas relief” painting to interpret our very own design.

Parallel Divergence
This project is another form of an abstract spatial design. The design must be functional with structural consideration. It has no specific site - this freestanding design is assumed to be assembled at anywhere on flat ground. We are required to design A Folly either to be seen or to be experienced – interpreted from an identified 2D sketch plan given by workbase master. The interpretation are based on drawing reading text - point as column, line as wall, dotted line as roof above and opening convention as door or window. The design, form massing and composition must appropriate to the sketch plan. More important, the Folly must have structural sense and logic even though not 100% work. Thus, basic understanding of structure, material, construction and services such as drainage must be considered in the design. A finalize design idea needs to be visualized using conceptual model as well as drawings. “Deconstructivism” was set as the primary theme for my workbase. The illustration below is the clue given by my workbase master as a guide to begin our design.

COMMUNITY IDEAS COMPETITION Artificial Reef For Mersing Fishing Village

This artificial reef design is generated from our precedence study, Reef Ball. According to the study on ‘A New Technology for Artificial Reef Construction in Coastal Ecosystems’ by Cynthia Warzecha, the dome shape of Reef Balls is the key to their stability. They are designed so that more than 50% of the weight is in the bottom near the ocean floor. The top of the dome is opened to reduce the lifting effects of wave action and turbulence during stormy weather. In addition, it can be casted up to double the standard weight to accommodate high energy zones.

Community Ideas Competition Artificial Reef For Mersing Fishing Village
Our design includes sustainable materials, versatile construction methods and durable anchoring. This design is focused on creating a community of artificial reef applying tongue-and-groove idea to attach each unit of artificial reel to one another.Concerning the affordability of the fishermen in Mersing, modifications and enhancement in terms of materials and function are proposed in our design.

For ‘normal’ bottom (rebar could be driven to two feet by a sledge hammer with normal effort and there was a healthy biological sea grass root system for resistance to settlement), anchoring cones were used.
In areas where the bottom was ‘hard packed’ (so hard that it was difficult for rebar had to be driven in by a sledge hammer), pre-cast spikes with #5 fiberglass reenforcement were cast into the Reef Ball bottoms.

Locating the Reef Ball in areas where the sand was ‘soft’ (so soft that rebar could be put to a two foot depth using hand pressure only) battered pilings were used. The Terengganu government has an ambitious intention to turn PMINT Square into a vibrant business hub and a one-stop centre for various governmental services, commercial opportunities as well as promoting tourism and a place to celebrate unity in diversity. Therefore, our main design intention emphasizes on revitalizing Terengganu’s traditional elements around PMINT Square by proposing rich local activities around it. We targetted 5 potential spots around the heart of the PMINT Square, transforming them to be Terengganu traditional food court, Terengganu traditional herbs garden, PMINT gallery plaza, street art filled with Terengganu arts + elements, and PMINT bazaar. Our main idea implements 5 human senses (hearing, sight, smell, touch and taste) into these 5 spots based on the compatibility of the area respectively. Each spot focuses on the respective human senses design, projecting out the strong element of its very own features to the public.

ISSUE Destroyed disaster land undergoes rebuild in a rapid speed,however, Excessive waste letftover from construction site, causing unefficient usage of building materials.Build process speed is not compatible with the increasing no. of victims of disaster, Victims had been forced to live in uncomfortable and livable temporary shelter space with not enough freedom on personal space usage. Shortage of food supply when no. of victims is larger than provided shelter, with no usable green land.
SOLUTION Reuse of leftover construction material to design functionable element attached to the building。 Owner of houses are given freedom to build its connection to the neighbour, renovate their own house based on self basic desire, as well as renovate the roof top into a plantable area to generate foods. Guildline shall be provided to instruct the owner of the construction method. When everyone started to work together to build the house, neighbourhood relationships will be improved and the process of renovating will be as well fasten. Rooftop planting and green wall method aids victims to regenerate own food. They can as well decide which portion of their house to be renovate or extend or connect to the neighbour.

Every nation needs its very uniquely own icon, for example KLCC has been standing for Malaysia for nearly 2 decades. People all around the world recognize Malaysia through this masterpiece of architecture with acknowledgement of the nation’s both economy and political stability. However, time had passed and a new icon which signify Malaysia is ready for 21st Century had yet to be born. Thus, this is a great time to design and build such icon to showcase to the local and the world that Malaysia is ready for the era of digital technology. The most valuable question for this proposal will be – How is 21st Century of Malaysia going to be like? Fun and Sustainable are the both key elements that will drive the people towards advancement and prosperity. Therefore, both elements will be the anchor of the design and planning in hope to bring fun and sustainable living quality to the urbanites living in Kuala Lumpur, the heart of Malaysia. 66

WORKING EXPERIENCE Shoplots Design Proposal In Johor Bahru

This is an early stage of shoplots design by CNC Architect in Johor Bahru. The shoplots design hasn’t finalized yet and still under development progress. It is an honour for me to have collaboration of design with Architect Chong. Fruitful experiences had been gained through this freelance work. My primary task is to have design criticism with Architect Chong. We shared opinions and thoughts on how to deal with client’s demands during the design stage. Thus, 3 different options of design were roughly sketched out in elevation form using Autocad. Based on those elevations, I expanded the idea through Revit modelling. As it was just an early stage of design, I’ve been told just to create raw rendering of perspectives and elevations for the presentation. It turned out to be quite well as expected.
