MAQUETTES IN BRONZE

2024

We are delighted to present a new collection of captivating bronze sculptures by Mark Coreth.

Since his successful exhibition here at the gallery last year, Mark has revisited some of the working models and maquettes used in the preparation of that exhibition to create a collection of sculptures on a more intimate scale. They capture his immediate representation of the animal and are infused with Mark’s energy and enduring enthusiasm for his subjects. All of Coreth’s bronzes, whether a small-scale study, a life-size or monumental piece, speak of the artist’s profound understanding of the animal’s character and movement.

Mark has also been busy since his last exhibition completing a masterful life-size bronze of Grady – an iconic sculpture for Guide Dogs. We are thrilled to show the first in the edition at the Sladmore before it goes to its permanent home at York Racecourse. The project is described further, later on in this catalogue.

GUIDE DOG, GRADY

Mark Coreth has had the privilege over the past 12 months of working with Jeremy Cassel and his beloved Guide Dog, Grady. The project was born when Jeremy one day came up with the idea of having a dedicated drinking bowl set up for the guide dogs of people attending York Racecourse, where Jeremy is an enthusiastic patron. The prospect of having a life-size model of his dog incorporated into this wonderful scheme became a reality upon Mark’s joining in with this masterful collaboration. The result is an exceptional bronze sculpture of Grady, capturing the grace and personality of Jeremy’s guide dog which will be unveiled at York Racecourse this May. The life-size sculpture is an edition of 9 casts. The sale of each one will help to raise money for Guide Dogs. We are delighted that Mark has also made an edition of the smaller study of Grady which will be shown alongside the life-size sculpture in this exhibition.

Mark Coreth, on working with Jeremy and Grady:

There are times when one knows something is right. On meeting Jeremy and his dog Grady, discussing his dreams and aspirations for creating a portrait of Grady was one of those moments; I was IN from the start. Grady was reaching the end of his days and indeed is now sitting on his cloud, but master and dog did visit the foundry at the start of the project. Grady sat on various occasions to be sculpted, including the final sitting. Jeremy visited the foundry again at the end of the project, this time to be reunited with his beloved dog, but now in bronze. The work will be placed at York to fulfil that aspect of Jeremys dream. The project will go on, hopefully in numerous public spaces throughout the country raising funds for the work of Guide Dogs.
